TEAM SPOTLIGHT
"Okay, everybody, do you remember where we left off? A dark and stormy night, a
semi-deserted graveyard, you know the script. Places, places, we're ready to roll
here!"
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Where Shadows Walk ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
As tombs went, Lurline supposed it was on the small side, no bigger than a
woodshed. Very simple in design, but the back of it ran into the hill that formed
the edge of the graveyard, so it might be bigger than it looked. The door was open;
it swung outward and the hinge was toward her, so she couldn't see inside. Not wide
open, maybe two feet. And the lantern stood, a little crookedly, on the ground where
it would shine into the open door. Again, still, no visible movement. The only
thing she could hear, for the moment, was the hiss of rain hitting the hot metal cap
of the lantern.
Now what? A quick glance to either side told her that if she wanted to go
forward, it would have to be over, through, or under this brush, or else a very long
way around it. Under seemed the most possible. And the messiest.
And she still didn't know what was IN the tomb that had caused the screams. And
the lightning.
As though her thought had called it forth, lightning struck upward again. Not
from the doorway to the tomb, but from a sort of gazebo or cupola on the roof. She'd
never seen a tomb with a cupola before. Well, "seen," she could barely see it now
because of the angle. But there was SOME kind of architectural doodad up there, and
the lightning was coming from it.
A slight movement beyond the tomb, at the edge of the light, caught her eye.
Her teammate Jehu, in position. Thank the gods for reliable partners! She inched
forward far enough to signal him that she was here and ready, too. But where was
Flutterlee? Where were the gravediggers?
She swept the darkness with a searching stare, didn't want anyone sneaking up
while her attention was focused on the tomb. But there was nothing to see through
the torrential rain. Well, nothing for it now.
She stood and walked forward into the small circle of lantern light.
SPY REPORT
Hail KATI-TEI! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your
deeds. And let's see, GRUNT 2 fought VALGARD and gained 13 points and contributed to
MEDAL OF HONOR 26's 2-2-0. GRUNT 1 has lost to RAMBLING OX, falling 3 points, while
helping make MEDAL OF HONOR 26 a 2-2-0 turn. Due to hers absence and inability to
defend the throne, REIGN OF BLADES has lost the title of Duelmaster. And not without
some honor, SWAN now claims the title and throne of Duelmaster of KATI-TEI. Tell me,
is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Welcome Wench
uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. THE PLAGUE has cause to stand tall, as they were KATI-TEI's
most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who
avoided THE PLAGUE stable the most? Believe it or not, it was BIRDS. Anyone
surprised?
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. Is it really true that KATI-TEI has more dishwashers per capita that
fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Always good to rest in KATI-TEI, but never good to wear out my
welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to
paper-- Alarond the Scribe

We note that our former teammates left us out of the congratulations to Soldier 1.
Know now that we congratulate him, too. -- Ghosts of Quinore and Chericille
P.S. Just because we're dead doesn't mean we can't be polite. Look at Olaf Modeen.
The Honest Merchant. (sigh) I couldn't afford to let him get the best of me, look
at all the hassle he's put Flutterlee to, and she's GONE. But he's still demanding
payment on her grandfather's loan. Not a casual, forgiving kind of guy. -- Rambling
Ox
I like fighting the Ambitious Guard. He makes it look good, and then he loses. My
kind of opponent. I'd buy him a drink, but the Infirmarian says it would conflict
with his meds. Can't argue with a doctor! -- Forandin
Grunt 1 -- I wish you were more of a conversationalist. I feel that I should do
SOMETHING out there, and I'm clearly not FIGHTING much. -- Valgard the Depressed
Nyogtha -- Well, that was...not what I expected, but actually rather satisfying.
Maybe there really is something in this "begin as you mean to go on" business. I
mean to go on as a winner. Of course, since I'm extremely cool and attractive and
rather charismatic, that's a given, isn't it? -- Lorimina
P.S. And probably why I was noted as "This week's favorite" in the newsletter, too.
I don't see why I had to start out with this "Trustworthy Scribe" person. I bet he
isn't nearly as trustworthy as he claims. I think I should have had the Shiftyeyed
Volunteer or the Friendly Constable. But does anybody listen to me? Noooo. --
Terrille
Death's Doorman -- Well, let's just say you were living up to your name. -- Ghost of
Chericille
Reign of Blades -- Probably Dark Root. There's been a lot of that around lately. --
Ghost of Quinore
Reaper -- I don't think I've bloodfeuded more than once or twice in this century. It
just doesn't seem worth it to send a warrior up against a known killer. Besides, in
this game, death of warriors is going to happen, over and over again. One gets used
to it. -- Leeta
