Fratsfa:

Fandil stared out over Fratsfa from his high window, then shook his head and
turned away to finish stowing a few necessary items into a carpet bag. And told
himself, again, that Lenpro could take care of himself and was probably following up
some hot tip. That he was not, in fact, his brother's keeper, and Lenpro wouldn't
thank him for this dither and fuss. And that he himself had a hot tip to
investigate.
He pulled the carpet bag shut and buckled the strap. All this dithering was
silly, pointless, insulting to his brother, and most of all, not like himself. He
shook it off. It was just a mood, and he didn't need it. He picked up his bag and
glanced out the window one last time. Odd how noisy a city could be--
By all the gods, that wasn't just city noise, it was a mob! Men with clubs were
standing in front of the Flower Shoppe, shaking their fists and shouting! He
couldn't make out the words up here under the roof, so turned and plunged down the
stairs to find out what was going on.
Lady Fern met him at the bottom of the stairs. "Relax, Fandil," she said before
he could speak. "This is just a rented mob, and I've dealt with them before. You
have important work to do, so go and do it."
     "But--"
"I can handle this." She raised an eyebrow. "Do you doubt me?"
The young Fratsfan mage, Elosjon, came from the front room, face white and eyes
staring. "They're calling for 'Fandil the Traitor' to be released to them!" he said.
The look he turned on the older mage was worried.
Fandil cursed mentally but allowed no sign of his annoyance to show in face or
voice. "That is just what people would call me who want to stop me. It is only
words, Elosjon, not truth."
"Did you hear any details?" Fern asked. "Who hired the mob, for instance?"
"Hired...?" The young man blinked and looked over his shoulder. "They were
hired? But why?"
"To make trouble, to stop me finding the magician behind the current
disruptions," Fandil said. "It isn't an unusual move for a politician, you know."
Could this young man be so naive? Hmm, if he'd been head down over the spell-books
since he was old enough to understand them, yes, he probably could be. Was. "We'd
better get going."
"It's Lord Orboj," Elosjon said. "He's the richest man in Fratsfa. Nobody
crosses him--if he names me a traitor, too, I'm through here!"
"Well, if the city and your colleagues are so fickle and easily swayed, you
might do better elsewhere anyway," Fern said. She snorted. "Orboj--he doesn't come
here. I don't cater to his tastes and never will."
Fandil opened his eyes wide. Fern catered to many tastes, if Orboj wanted
something different, he must be strange indeed, and notably perverse.
There had been a lot of coming and going of the Flower Girls while they talked,
but Fandil only noticed it now because one stopped. A redhead of statuesque
proportions and discretely indiscrete garb. She leaned close to Elosjon, linking an
arm through his. "You won't mind going out with ME, in fact, I know you'll like it,"
she half-whispered. "And no one will notice if old Fandil trails along behind us."
She kissed his ear. "I can hardly wait."
Lady Fern laughed. "Be good, Ravishing Redbud! This--"
"I am ALWAYS good," Redbud answered.
Fern laughed again, and Elosjon had turned as red as the woman's hair and seemed
incapable of speech or even thought; he allowed her to pull him out the back door and
didn't notice Fandil following.
"Take care," Fern said as Fandil passed her. "And don't worry about me here, or
about Lenpro either. Ours is a family that copes, you know that." She pushed him
out and shut the door behind him.

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly KATI-TEI games. Did only my eyes note the 4-1-0
record which WANDERERS managed to post this round? I don't doubt that such a record
will draw challengers! CHARLES DEGLOPPER caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as he skillfully bested BREAK STUFF and was awarded 17 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, CHARLES DEGLOPPER put down
BREAK STUFF, causing him to lose 13 points of recognition in the process. The city
has turned out in honor of TERRINDAR, for with his arena victory he may now lay claim
to the highest position in the city! Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6
die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. KATI-TEI, city of gladiators!
Mighty among the names of thy guilds is WANDERERS, a guild shunned and avoided by
many in the weekly duels. Apparently the stalwarts of THE PLAGUE are catching the
bulk of jests down at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids.
Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. VALARELLE take
warning! You have more than a few enemies in KATI-TEI. A match that raised a few
eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that THE WAIT posted a challenge against
the more highly recognized SERGEANT 1. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand
THE WAIT was defeated by SERGEANT 1. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of
steel.
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears
arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in KATI-TEI. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must I
keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari
await me! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a
maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes
