West of Fratsfa:
Elosjon heaved a sigh of relief when his feet touched firm ground again, and he
didn't care if Fandil heard him or not. He had been afraid--no, he was afraid now.
In the tree, he had been terrified. Of falling. Of failing.
The old mage gripped his arm, held one hand to his mouth briefly to signal
silence, and then pulled him away from the ravine, deeper into the forest. Higher up
the mountain.
After several minutes of silent walking, or at least walking without speech,
Elosjon figured he could risk speech. "What about Redbud?" he whispered.
"We keep going," Fandil said. "She may, probably will, be fine. And she's
doing a necessary job so that we can go forward and do a different and even more
necessary job. Let us not waste her efforts."
"Right, right. The magician at Mountain Home." He hesitated. "I could be
wrong about Mountain Home. I only have the word of Herlas of Zensu and he's, well,
his reputation isn't exactly--"
"I feel sure that you ARE correct," Fandil said. "All my instincts tell me so.
We will find an answer up there on the mountain. If we get there soon enough."
Elosjon was silent for several minutes, trying to work that out. Finally he
said, "Soon enough?"
"Eh?" Fandil brought his thoughts back from a great distance. "Oh, certainly.
That magician has a plan in progress. Now, plans are like snow on a mountain: They
build up and build up, and suddenly they reach the point where they become an
avalanche. Building pressure can be dealt with, but once you have an avalanche, all
you can do is try to survive until it's over. If we can reach our opponent before
his plan becomes an avalanche, we can--probably--stop him. After... we can only hope
to pick up the pieces."
"Oh." Elosjon stared into the darkness, not total darkness because some moon-
and starlight filtered through the trees, and thought about that as he walked. This
old man, who had been a magician for longer than he, Elosjon, had been alive was
messing up all his preconceived notions of what it actually meant to be a magician.
There seemed to be a lot more luck, and a lot more responsibility, involved than he
had expected. He wasn't sure he could handle it. That thought made him pause. Was
he going to give up, then? No! He would do his best, the very best that was in him
and maybe just a little more, and either he would survive the effort or he wouldn't.
But no quitting. It was almost a relief to make up his mind like that.
The path they were following came out of the trees into an open area. A ghost
town, abandoned buildings, overgrown yards, a rutted street. Elosjon stopped. "This
used to be the village of Mountain Home," he said.
Fandil stopped beside him and looked around. "Odd," he muttered, sniffing the
air. "There's something here, or has been recently."
"What? And how can you tell?" The younger mage sniffed too. It smelled like
an animal's den, a little. Maybe fading. And something else. Sulfur? Recognition
came with a cold chill down his spine. "A demon?"
"In general terms, yes. I think so. Something from that neighborhood, anyway."
Fandil was silent for a moment, his head cocked as though to listen.
Elosjon listened, too, but the only sounds he heard were made by the wind
rustling the brush and tapping on the roofs. Unless there was something he was
missing? He listened harder, so hard that his ears rang with the silence. If there
was a real sound, he wasn't hearing it.
"Not here now," Fandil said.
"If there was something, what would we hear?"
"Depends on WHAT there was, but... scratching. Clicking. Maybe grumbles.
Which way is the castle from here? We should go on before the 'watchdog' returns."

SPY REPORT
Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out KATI-TEI to see
what's new. Too bad, MEDAL OF HONOR H3, but THE PLAGUE was just too good to be
stopped. Talk about yer big time losers! HELL HOUND got smashed by HARBINGER OF
WOE, and lost 10 points! Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think
SERGEANT2 should let BREAK STUFF be Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about
it. I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want
photogenic fighters for PR photos.
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. The warriors
of WANDERERS must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys
know something that I don't? Is there some deep dark secret why THE PLAGUE's been
avoiding WANDERERS so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Like, is COUNTRY
RHODES popular, or what? She was challenged the most in all of KATI-TEI! She's got
a 7-6-0, is that good? For sure, I was holding my breath when I found out FOUR PAWZ
challenged SERGEANT3. After all, haven't DA DOG POWNDAZ and MEDAL OF HONOR H3 had a
long standing duel in KATI-TEI? It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but
SERGEANT3 wants me to write about it since he defeated FOUR PAWZ. Satisfied? NATE
DOGG O.G. must not be a good enough fighter to get in fair fights. He challenged
HALZORAN. 9 is a big difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I thought NATE
DOGG O.G. showed great skill and promise when he was defeated by HALZORAN. All
right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. What if they had a fight and nobody showed
up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I gotta leave. KATI-TEI is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much!
Its been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte
