Fratsfa, more or less:

"We have to get out of here now," Lenpro said, urging Sizzling Sunflower toward
the gate of this arena. "Even if we can't find the portal to take us back to the
true Fratsfa--"
"Will they let us go?" the Lady Protector asked. She glanced to the side and
saw that Lenpro had his own sword out. Oddly, she'd never thought of him as being a
warrior--he was so old! But he managed gladiators, trained them, and he'd lived a
long time in a world where violence was not uncommon.
"Can they stop us, except by magic?" the manager asked. "And I have a feeling
their half-demon mage will be busy trying to keep control of things now that you've
beaten his--I think the vampire was his enforcer."
"I don't know for certain that the vampire's dead," Sunflower warned. "They're
tricky to kill."
"Doesn't matter," the manager said, steering her to her right. They hurried
down another street, not running, because if you ran, there was always something or
someone who would automatically give chase. "Even if it isn't dead, or what passes
for dead among vampires, it was hurt and won't be up to giving us trouble before we
can get out of here." He swerved to the left into an alley, and she followed.
"Do you know where we're going?" Sunflower asked. "Not that I care much at the
moment, as long as it's 'away'."
"I've got a good idea which way the Portal lies," Lenpro said. "Fandil is the
magician in the family, but there are other kinds of skills."
"If you can find and open the Portal back to Fratsfa--"
"I can find it," Lenpro said. "I'm nearly certain I can find it. But opening
it might present problems. Unless there's someone on hand who can be coerced. I do
coercion from time to time."
     "Good. So do I."
They turned another corner, and Lenpro pointed ahead. An archway of mismatched
stones straddled the way ahead of them, framing grayness. "There's our portal," he
said.

Andor:

Outcast Orchid stared back toward the avenue and the slaughter of the "king" by
out-of-work gladiators. "I don't believe it! Those gladiators were waiting to kill
the king--the golem they thought was the king. How could they do such a thing?"
"You saw how," the man beside her said.
     "Yes, but--"
"Gladiators come all kinds, just like ordinary people," he went on. "Some good,
some bad, and a lot of them on the fence. And this hasn't been a good town for a
gladiator since the arena closed. They were probably so glad to have a job that they
didn't look into it closely."
"You're saying someone paid them to--?"
"Of course." He steered her into an alley just before a troop of mounted guards
rushed past. "Very few people, gladiators or not, are genuine anarchists to kill
what they believe is the king just for... kicks." He paused at the other end of the
alley, looked both ways, and hurried her across another street into an overgrown
park.
"But they must have expected the guards, why didn't they have an escape route
ready?"
"They were most likely told the guards wouldn't be a problem. Don't you see?"
He stopped and turned to face her. "They were set up to kill and to die." He shook
her a little. "Believe it, lady! Lord Korneth doesn't care whose death he ordered,
and you will be a target if anyone noticed and recognized you. Even if no one saw
you at the parade--any gladiator found in Andor today will be marked for death. You
have to get out of the city!"
"And so do you," she answered. "You helped me get away, and someone will have
noticed--someone always notices."
"My life is already forfeit. Gods forgive me, I've been a part of this. But
they will not find my death easily achieved, and that may buy you extra time to
escape--"
"If you want to make amends for whatever it is you've done, better to help FIX
things than just throw your life away," Orchid argued. She glanced around, orienting
herself. "Fratsfa's THAT way." She set out, keeping a firm grip on her companion's
arm. "Come ON."
     "Lady--"
"Don't waste time and breath arguing," she said. "Just come ON. When we get
out of the city, THEN we can argue."

West of Fratsfa:

Elosjon glanced over his shoulder as they left the deserted buildings of
Mountain Home behind them. He had been thrilled when a well-known, deeply respected
magician like Fandil of Ardivent had invited him to help, but the idea of facing a
demonic 'watchdog' chilled him to the bone. He was not skilled enough to deal with
demons, and he knew it. He just didn't want to have to admit it to a master of his
profession. He took a deep breath, coughed at the bite of sulfur in the air, and
squared his shoulders. He would do his best. Surely an experienced magician like
Fandil would understand that his best was all he could do.
But he hoped they wouldn't meet that demonic watchdog.
His mind was so fixed on what he hoped that he didn't notice where he was going
and ran full into Fandil. The old magician was standing in the middle of the
overgrown road, immobile as a tree, staring up the mountain. Elosjon followed the
direction of his gaze.
Fandil was looking at the castle on the ridge above what had been the town.
Studying it. Okay. Elosjon studied it, too. He had only seen it once before, a
long time ago, when he was a kid--well, that might not seem long to someone like
Fandil, but it was a long time ago to him. He didn't remember it clearly. At least,
he didn't remember it looking quite like this. He frowned, trying to figure out what
was different... or wrong. It was a fairly standard Medieval Frafrejan castle.
Central keep, enclosing wall with a lot of pointy little towers along it.... Wasn't
that wall leaning outward a little too much? It looked like a stone wave about to
break over their heads. In fact, for a structure that was at least half a mile away
horizontally, maybe a little farther vertically, it seemed to be looming very much
over their heads. Enough that it would be no surprise if it blocked out the sun.
That had to be a magical effect, didn't it? Even though he'd never heard of one like
that.
"Our enemy is powerful, and heedless of normal safety," Fandil said. His voice
was quiet. "That heedlessness makes him doubly dangerous. And it is crucial that he
be destroyed, or he will destroy not only us, not only the Andorian League, but a
goodly portion of this whole area." The old mage's voice hardened. "He is dabbling
on the edges of Chaos magic."
Elosjon paled. He had traveled some in Alastari as part of his education in
magic, had seen the Smoking Plain near Delarq Tor that was all that remained of a
fertile and populous countryside that had been hit with a blast of Chaos magic five
hundred years ago during the last Chaos War. And he had heard of the Twisted Lands
farther south, where the Chaos War of three and a half millennia ago had centered.
And now someone would do it here? "No! We can't allow that--anything we can do, I
would give my life if that would stop him--" He started up the road to the castle.
Fandil caught his arm. "You may end up doing that, and I may also, but we will
not succeed by rushing straight ahead. This calls for planning and finesse."

                                      SPY REPORT

I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. KATI-TEI needs a spyreport." Oh, well. Too bad, DA DOG
POWNDAZ, but MEDAL OF HONOR H3 was just too good to be stopped. What was the name of
that team who got 3-1-0 this turn for a total 632-670-15 you ask? (Sure) WANDERERS'
their name, and fighting's their game! MVP award for SERGEANT 6? MEDAL OF HONOR
H3's proud of him after beating OF THE ORDER and getting 21 points. Talk about yer
major upsets! OF THE ORDER's match with SERGEANT 6 cost him a loss of 13 points!
Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think SERGEANT2 should let BREAK
STUFF be Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. I hear the top team
insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for
PR photos.
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? The warriors of WANDERERS must be getting lonely.
They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't? Hhmph!
What kind of warriors are THE PLAGUE? WANDERERS, an easy team to beat if I ever saw
one, can't get them to accept an invitation! Can WANDERERS' BALIN CHANE be more
popular than me? He was challenged the most, but is that really the same? I'm not
so sure RED DAWG knew all the facts when he challenged SERGEANT3 of MEDAL OF HONOR
H3. I saw RED DAWG stumbling and dribbling at The Swinging Aardvark last week...
RED DAWG lost to SERGEANT3, but he got 4 points. SERGEANT3 won, and got 6 points. I
don't get it. HELL HOUND must not be a good enough fighter to get in fair fights.
He challenged BALIN CHANE. 12 is a big difference. (Well, that's what they tell
me.) I thought HELL HOUND showed great skill and promise when he won victory over
BALIN CHANE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you?
Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop. I had
a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

Duct Man -- I knew you looked familiar, so I actually checked in the Kati-Tei Hall of
Records! This is kind of crazy, but I actually fought against you a long time ago!
Turn 206 to be exact. I challenged you and you beat me :) The arena looked a lot
different back then. There were around 16 teams and my manager's old basher, Blyzz
Ard, was the Duelmaster! Brings back good memories. If your manager kept records of
your old fights, you should check it out! It took me 14 yrs, but I finally got my
revenge. So instead of a new rivalry, this is really an old one being revisited! --
I.C. Sleet (going down memory lane)

Sergeant 2 -- No offense, but I'm glad you're leaving. -- Four Pawz

Harbinger of Woe -- Your ambition is impressive. I'd take a look at that insurance
policy one more time. -- Red Dawg

Balin Chane -- I enjoyed our first encounter so much, I cam back for seconds! -- Hell
Hound

Assid Rane -- Shall we dance yet a third time? I'm learning well!!! -- Lucky Dawg

Of the Order -- I have a sneaking feeling we haven't seen the last of each other...
There needs to be a tie breaker! -- Nate Dogg O.G.

There has been a run lately of personals and columns turning up in the wrong
arenas. When you email in something, check and make sure you have the correct
arena number! It's easy for a finger to slip onto the wrong key. When the
receipt comes back, check again to be sure it went where you intended!
