Marlin Reeve studied his arena newsletter. "Why does Jorja say it's 'good' to
have this Flagg guy show up? Did you think it was good, Grimm?" Getting no
immediate answer, he prepared to raise his voice over the steady low roar of the
wind, but it wasn't necessary.
The Grimm Lurcher finally shrugged, not looking up from the leather he was
oiling. "It was a fight. I lost. So what? Not the first time, and it won't be the
last." After a moment, he added, "It makes a change. Most of the gladiators here,
we see them every day. Practice in the same dojos, eat in the same cafes, drink in
the same bars... a new face is good."
The wind-roar was suddenly pierced by a shriek. Without thought, every person
in the guildhouse was standing, gripping a weapon. Grimm blew down the lamp chimney
to put it out. They waited in the darkness for a repeat of the scream, or some other
sound that was out of place on this windy night.
Five minutes passed slowly and uneventfully. They began to relax.
"Maybe it was just... a weird bit of wind sound," Marlin Reeve suggested. He
didn't sound convinced, but he did sound hopeful. "Maybe the Storm Front's taken on
a screaming wind? Or one of the Birds, or...."
"Maybe the Red Tentacle has trapped some poor wretch in an alley," Samara
whispered. "Better him than us!"
"Sam! That's a rotten thing to say." Grimm lit the lamp again so that he could
glare at her.
She blinked back. "Why? We're all thinking it, why is it worse to say it out
loud?"
Marlin smiled without humor. "Hypocrisy makes society possible," he said.

You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to KATI-TEI once again! What's with THE HAND OF DOG? He actually
beat WANDERERS' SAMARA, and walked away with 22 more points from the fight. Laughs
were big at BIRDS while they watched DODO clobber OLD YELLER. He lost 14 points and
got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. What a role model for KATI-TEI's
young 'uns! NYPD becomes Duelmaster, but don't bother to fight no more! I can
barely restrain my enthusiam for WANDERERS' outstanding member, Duelmaster MARLIN
REEVE. I suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow
fighters? Tough!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. How
well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of
practive, THE PLAGUE! Management must be dealin', as the boys at DA DOG POWNDAZ
ain't reelin'! THE PLAGUE's mad! What do people see in GRIMM LURCHER? His 20-18-0?
WANDERERS ain't talkin', but he's got 84 points.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. How long have I been here? I got people to see,
places to go...
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here?
KATI-TEI is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places.
