Rodeki:

"Princess? I didn't know she was a princess," Tolugat muttered. "Princess
Tirisha? This changes everything!"
"Yeah." Adabemis & Balmador nodded with satisfaction. "This gives us, you
know, whatchit. Not just a back-street cult. We've got a princess."
"She'll be picky," the priest objected. "She'll want velvet cushions to kneel
on. Good wine. All that fancy stuff we can't afford--"
"Hey, it makes a good show!" the gladiator protested. "People like a good show.
Velvet cushions, okay, maybe not, but we have to have good wine. And blood
sacrifices. Lots of them." His eyes glittered. "Lots of blood...."
Tolugat began to look uneasy. "That could attract unfavorable attention.
Rulers don't like that, they shut down cults that do a lot of sacrificing, they--"
"But Princess Tirisha's going to be the ruler," the gladiator pointed out.
"She's one of us. She's on OUR side. She LIKES a good bloody cult, I can tell." He
grinned, the glitter in his eye becoming more pronounced.
"Oh. Oh, of course," the priest said faintly. "Why didn't I think of that...."
"And we'll have lots of gladiators," Adabemis & Balmador went on. "Gladiators
like blood, too. Gladiators are INTO dark cults, after all. It'll be great!"
"Right... great. Of course," Tolugat muttered. "Lots of...," he swallowed
hard, "lots of blood."

Mordant, the royal palace:

Talissen, Queen of Mordant, threw down the spy's report and glared across the
breakfast table at her husband, King Samir of Trocar. "You see! I told you that if
we didn't deal with Sibikhas and Rodeki, there would be trouble."
Samir shrugged and cut himself another slice of ham. "If it gets out of hand,
you can crack down on things, but I like the idea of letting the contenders for
Overlord of Sibikhas fight it out among themselves. Fewer discontented challengers
left around to make trouble later."
"And I told you I thought it was a bad idea, on several counts," she snapped
back. "That kind of chaos is not good for the nation, in the first place. Second,
the winner could end up being TOO strong, and everyone knowing it. Third, it ignores
the legal solution, that Morra of Jhans, as Gryzash's wife, should be regent until
his son is old enough to take the rule--"
"She's got experience at being a regent," Samir remarked, frowning thoughtfully.
"Rather convenient, isn't it, that just when her job ends in Jhans, here comes
another one in Sibikhas...."
"Coincidences DO happen sometimes. That's why we have a name for them," the
Queen replied. "And the fourth reason is that if there is to be some new rulers
among my vassals, *I* should be the one to choose them."
"That's the best reason," Samir agreed. He shrugged again. "So choose one.
But if it isn't someone with the strength to defend the position, you'll have to
commit YOUR army to supporting him. And if your army's not at home, then you could
be vulnerable."
After a moment's thoughtful silence, Talissen said, "I need more information.
And I need some warriors to be bodyguards for whoever I do choose. Gladiators, I
think. Very useful people, gladiators."

This is a call for volunteers. A personal, or an email to Livia@reality.com will do
it.

                                      SPY REPORT

Well, what are you looking at, RODEKI? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Of course, we're all terribly impressed
to see GATE WITCH win a fight and gain 14 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, M. CHARDINEE
beat GUNSLINGER and GUNSLINGER lost 13 points. You're breakin' my heart. STERLING
challenged RODEKI's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And if variety is the spice
of life, RODEKI may be getting bland, as SNAPPY GEORGE stays top dog in the city.
The Swinging Aardvark, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they
get this stuff? From RODEKI's trash dumps?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
RODEKI, I am losing what little hope I had in you. KING'S KREW the most avoided
team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And who led the way in this mass act
of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was CLOWNING AROUND. Ha ha ha ha!
RUBBER BUMPER was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the
DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. And we have YANKEE DAN in a challenge, going down
14 points for the fight. Guess what? I thought YANKEE DAN showed great skill and
promise when he overcame JOHN ROSE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for RODEKI's
morgue. More variety. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use.
Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one.
What does the RODEKI arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Phlllt! Just had to do that
before I leave the fine city of RODEKI. I feel much better now. I see the crowds
are getting restless, I must leave now-- Snide Clemens

Flagg -- You think a Golem could stop me from talking? That's a laugh. Well, maybe
a girl golem--uh--don't tell that to the wife! Nah, just busy with my real life job.
But three months of busy time a year isn't something I'm going to complain about! --
Assur

John Rose -- I'm not sure you should lose sleep at all! If Assur didn't make me beat
you every single turn, your record might actually be decent. But he thinks you'll
keep on teaching me and making me good. I am getting better, but not ready for the
big time yet. -- Yankee Dan

Suave -- Well, that last turn certainly sucked for me...but was amazingly good for
you. Hmmmph, hopefully this turn we'll see things return back to the way they're
supposed to be around here. -- Flagg
P.S. Now if I can get any of my "bonused" warriors to live around here....

Snappy George -- Fine challenge, but of course I got ripped. I'm sure there's
something that Flagg forgot to tell me before fighting you. I'm content to let you
have the throne for awhile, but I think Sterling has other ideas. -- Draxus Bremoore

Snappy George -- Here I come! Eat longsword! -- Sterling
P.S. Hopefully, the challenge went through and I won, otherwise I'll have to print
some silly retraction next turn. I don't like to retract things, unless it's my
longsword, which I would invariably dive forward with again. -- Sterling, again.

Rubber Bumper -- I'll deal with you when I become the Duelmaster, if I don't ship the
turn I get it, that is. Scum. -- Sterling, uh...again.

Ann Artichoke -- Guess, I have to let a plant have her day every once in awhile.
After all I am a witch and we do love nature, we witches. But just one day, that's
all, no more. -- Gate Witch

Veteran Mercenary -- Things are starting to look up now that I am able to beat you!
Wow, to think I used to be soooo afraid of the GC sending out a veteran, now look at
me: Super -- Problematic, the Veteran Non-mercenary

Harby -- How's the volunteering coming? -- Flagg

Assurbunnythumperlampmakerdoritoeatingburpenheimer -- Ok, check this out.... Start
running 5 guys here and we'll give you bragging rights for a turn, maybe two, but
definitely not three or more. Well, just as long as Suave and Harby don't mind
giving up the bragging rights, but for you I think they would. Maybe just for a turn
or two though and you would have to give them directly back to one of us, preferably
me. -- Flagg

Editor -- Nein! Nyet! Non! Parlez vous francais? Je parle une petit. Je m'apelle
Monsieur Scott Noel, et tu? -- Flagg, who really doesn't know French very well.

Moi? Je m'apelle "Redactrice", bien sur. -- Ed. whose French is slightly more
     awful than her Spanish

All -- Hi, I'm Flagg's newest warrior. Vile Vixen. Hairlip Bombshell, I understand
that you have the blood of my predecessor on your hands. Good thing we will be
facing each other for a long time to come. I'm sure that I'll be able to exact a
proper form of revenge, not that pathetic bloodfeud that Problematic goes through the
motions with. Until then.... -- Vile Vixen

All -- Ok, I dropped the Vendetta Cartel...and started up a new alliance along with
some others. Now I belong to Chaos Inc. Be afraid, be very afraid! C'mon! Can't
you at least quake a little bit? -- Flagg

Yankee Dan -- (crossly) Damned clown. -- John Rose

Sterling -- Looks like you bounced off that one. -- Harby

Gate Witch -- A gate is no match for an artichoke. But then, who would expect it?
It's apples and oranges, but more so. -- Ann Artichoke

Stupid mercenary! -- El Ripoff

Fuzzy Buzzcut -- You come near me with that razor and you're fajitas, man! -- Sushee
Su

Flagg -- Good work! Keep those spots and personals coming. -- Harby

Draxus Braemore -- "Huffing and puffing"? Maybe you need to do wind sprints. --
Harby

8 December 2003
Greetings! I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk
St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the
ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid-
February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will
be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance
with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most
kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will
probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The
contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest
alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36

TOURNEY FREEZE CHANGE -- ADVANCE NOTICE

Beginning at the Winter Face-to-Face in Tempe (January 2004), we will implement
several changes affecting tournaments. The tournament announcement for the upcoming
FTF and future tourneys will reflect these changes.
First, we will eliminate the tourney freeze for all regular DM warrior classes.
Regular DM warriors will not be classed ahead of the tournament, but instead will
fight according to their FE on the date of the tourney. There will still be a freeze
for the ADM classes, occurring on the same timeline as before, approximately 6 weeks
before the tournament.
In addition to the above change, the warrior classes will be slightly altered.
The new tourney classes will be as follows:

DM Tourney Classes ADM Tourney Classes
              ======================              ======================
                  0 FE: Rookies Freshmen
                1-4 FE: Apprentices ADM
               5-10 FE: Initiates Eligibles
              11-20 FE: Adepts ---induction---
              21-30 FE: Champions Contenders
                31+ FE: Challengers Primus

All regular DM tourney classes will remain solely FE based. All ADM classes will
now be based on warrior characteristics (i.e., the ADM split algorithm), including the
Freshmen class.
The Gateway and Primus arenas will be merging before the FTF to form one top
arena. These warriors will be split into two tournament classes, the Contenders and
the Primus classes, again based upon their characteristics. More information on this
will be published in the newsletters for those arenas.
If you have any questions about the above changes, please contact Customer
Service. Good luck in your games.
