                               Profile of a Revenant

It is well known in the Delarquan Federation that the warrior caste, above all
others, is to be respected and feared. Children grow up in Martial Arts schools,
paid for with the blood and sweat of their parents, to pass their combat test and
become one of the elite. But such is not the fate of every adolescent. Some are too
poor. Others born of a slave caste.
I was of the latter. I was known in those days as Talos. We didn't have last
names as it would make no matter, as they never even learn our first. My life began
in the Northern reaches of the Federation in a city called Mordant, though if there
was an actual city I had never seen it. Work kept me in the swamps gathering
dangerous, vibrantly painted plants for gods knew what ends.
I guess my story really begins the night I awoke to the smell of a campfire and
someone forging steel. Inside our quarters it was dark but the early morning ochre
and crimson sun shined brightly through the openings between misfit planks that made
up the door, causing shadows to dance and flit about the walls. But... why were
there shadows dancing? I opened the door and was awestruck by the sight of my
master's home engulfed in an inferno. The sound of metal upon metal was not that of
the forge, but the clarion call of battle being pitched. I turned and ran back into
our sleeping quarters. "Fire! Everyone up and out! We need to go now!" I screamed.
Behind me I could hear my master shouting orders to his armsmen to hold the ranch,
promising death and worse to all who would flee. Everyone was awake and running away
from our home, toward the marsh, when a man upon a horse cut them off. In the
pandemonium of battle and conflagration they were herded like sheep back toward the
house only to huddle in a group just six meters from our shack while battle raged on
around us. Men screamed as horses fell upon them then were quickly silenced by the
pikes of my master's armsmen. The battle had begun to swing in our favor and the men
I could not identify initiated a withdrawal back to whatever godsforsaken land they
came from.
I remember now the look in my uncle's eyes, though at the time, I was too
overwhelmed by smoke and the sight of so much blood. He had raised me in our ranch
since I was a boy and my father died from a beast attack in the marsh lands. It was
a look that screamed defiance and begged for someone to challenge it. "Now's our
chance!" he bellowed. "Freedom!"
With that he plucked a longsword from the hand of a fallen invader and charged
the mounted horseman. With deadly speed he zipped toward the horseman, dodging a
lethal jab of his pike. Leaping into the air he was upon his enemy, placing the
entire weight of his body behind the blow. The horseman was slain almost instantly
as he was cleaved from shoulder to groin by the strike. Landing softly upon the dew
ridden grass he sprang forward in a desperate attempt at escape. He looked back at
us and howled something, but I cannot remember it now. What I remember is the ragged
gasp that left him as a spear impaled him from behind. I know I screamed something
as I watched him sink onto the ground, the life leaving his eyes, but I know not what
it was. "Kill the boy too." my master said, his tome even. As the men advanced on
me I had a flash of insight.
"I invoke the right of Blood Clemency!" I said defiantly.
The men back up and split toward one end. My master stood, shortspear in hand,
"Then Clemency you shall have." He sneered as he ripped the longsword from my
uncle's hand and tossed it casually at my feet.
I picked up the weapon and he was upon me, like a ravenous wight. I had not the
strength to use the weapon in a slashing motion, so blocking was out of the question,
I used my smaller stature and superior speed to dodge around his attacks. Like
vipers they were, coming from all directions seemingly at once. The tip of the spear
bit into my left shoulder causing my whole arm to numb except for the warm, slow wet
feeling spreading down my chest. I fell back out of his reach only to find myself
braced against a rain barrel that had fallen.
When you're about to die, everything seems to slow to a crawl and you're senses
are awakened. I tasted soot in my mouth from the cataclysm burning behind me, the
grip of the longsword biting into my palms. Blood and death hung heavy upon the air,
covered by the smell of burning timber. I still heard screaming, but I knew not from
where. But what I saw... my master's face turned into a visage of hate, his eyes
bulging in their sockets and that deadly spear aimed at my throat. My body reacted
without me. Dodging in a low roll to the right, I cam e at him. My assault was
unmatched as I used the point of the longsword to pierce his throat from one side to
the other. Blood spraying over me as I rose and looked back toward my family. I
know who was screaming now. My fellow slaves had been slaughtered for attempting to
escape under cover of the melee.
I could tell you what happened next, but I think you already know. Everyone who
I ever knew and loved died that day. Everyone who know my name that was twelve years
ago. I am twenty-four now. I am Revenant.

                                      SPY REPORT

Well, what are you looking at, RODEKI? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Now let's all watch THE SOVEREIGN's
heads swell from their 4-1-1 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk, big
deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see HESHON SOMNI win a fight and
gain 15 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, BEER beat ROLAYT MIT and ROLAYT MIT lost 11
points. You're breakin' my heart. 21 challenged RODEKI's Duelmaster for a shot at
the throne. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as 21 takes the Title and
last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. I'm not in a very good mood
today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you,
RODEKI?
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. THE
SOVEREIGN, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team.
Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And it looks like STORMBLADES avoided
them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. JADE
was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or
feared? Heh, heh.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Whoa! I'll even buy STUD a drink tonight! Anyone
who can come back from the Dark Arena, I want to be on his good side! Honor is like
a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use. Certain nameless cowards will
doubtless rebuke me on this one.
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Just wait 'till next time I show up
here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah! I see the crowds are getting restless, I must
leave now-- Snide Clemens

Rocksnail -- Well done. May you hold the title long. I'm off to the big blue
retirement folder. -- Stud

Save your challenges my friends I'm leaving 42 for awhile, good luck and hopefully
I'll see you all in Tempe. -- Coach

Harby -- Very well, since you want to carry on with this petty attitude... whenever
you're ready. *spits on ground* -- Scorpio

Anvengen Kale -- *smiles widely* Don't be a stranger. -- Scorpio

All -- Not a lot of talkers here in Rodeki... That's okay. I guess I could talk to
Scorpio. He really seems to enjoy it. -- Anvengen Kale

Delvers -- Hello to all of you from the North! I enjoy watching you all battle on
the sands. Never a dull moment. -- Anvengen

Persistant Beggar -- You know what's crazy? I was just about to buy you a sandwich &
a beer but you just had to comment on my mother's birth. Sometimes, a closed mouth
DOES get fed. -- Rolayt Mit

52 Pickup -- Ouch. Good Fight! Though, I know not why I extend niceties knowing you
shall not respond in kind. -- Nissa Breeze

All -- By the way, I kinda enjoy telling stories as you can see from last turn. I'll
stop if you don't like them though. Doesn't seem to be much RP here n-all... --
Anvengen Kale

Our congratulations to Stud. I notice an odd pattern in your team: hold the title
for several turns, lose it once, and graduate. I wonder if it will affect Rocksnail?

SLAUGHTER CHALLENGE 2

Several years ago I ran a contest known as the "Slaughter Challenge" which was the
idea of a member of my alliance at the time. We unfortunately lost him during a
robbery attempt at the store he worked at. This November will mark the 10th
anniversary of his passing so I have decided to run the Slaughter Challenge again in
remembrance of him.

Rich Hammes was a member of my alliance, the Vendetta Cartel, and had sponsored me
into the alliance. Rich was a common poster to both the Yahoo Duelmasters group as
well as the Duel2 boards and our Alliance's Yahoo group. He went by the handle
GameOgre on the Duel2 boards and was known by the name Abarsis, the Slaughter Priest.
He was a very kind and thoughtful man who always had time to talk with not only his
alliance-mates but anyone else who wanted to discuss Duelmasters. He also had time
to talk with anyone about personal life issues if he felt he could help. He was a
daily, and prolific, poster to these sites and seemed to enjoy the interaction with
others regarding this game that he loved so much.

I would also like everyone to know that he spent several years in the US Navy serving
on a Nuclear attack Submarine in protection of our nation. He was well loved, and
well known, by the community in which he lived even spending time at a local Ice
Cream Shop around closing time to assure that the lady who owned the store was safe
as she was often alone when she closed her shop. He was a well known and much loved
member of his local community. His death was grieved by his local San Diego
community where they held a candle-light vigil for him and many expressed their
disbelief that he was gone. These are just a scant few examples of what a kind and
caring man he was and why not only our gaming community lost a great deal on that
fateful day, but also shows why there was tremendous sadness among the community in
which he lived.

It is near to 10 years since his passing and there are many times I wonder, "What
would Rich think about this...." I miss my friend dearly to this day and I hope you
will come join us in this contest idea which he himself came up with. He thought we
should all learn to appreciate what Jorja does to keep our smaller arenas alive and
populated!

The contest will be held in Morya, arena 28, beginning on the turn that is due on
November 6th, 2014 (turn 378 I believe). Tourney participation is not allowed during
the contest but the contest will start after the fall Mailer so you can get your
warriors a few fight experience should you choose to. The timing of the contest was
done to allow entry into the fall mailer.

The rules are fairly simple and inspired to let us all feel what it is like to run
warriors like Jorja does. Her teams across Alastari may sometimes be taken for
granted so this contest will allow us to appreciate her teams a little better as they
populate the arenas we fight in.

The Rules--

There are no challenges, avoids, bloodfeuds, or tourneys allowed and only one single
use of the Dark Arena is allowed after the contest begins. Win or lose the Dark
Arena is allowed but once, so if you want your warrior dead be sure and throw the
fight!

The contest will last for 12 turns. May I point out that if you use your Dark Arena
fight you will get either 2 points, for winning, or -2, for losing, and ALL fights
count in the scoring. It matters not if you fight a non-contest warrior or a stand-
in; they still count as much as fighting a contest warrior. This will be a test of
basic strategy with a touch of luck added in as well.

If anyone should break the no tourney rule they will lose 5 points for each warrior
entered and those warriors, and any subsequent warriors who replace them in death,
cannot score points! The one exception are the dead tourneys. Should you wish you
may enter your warriors in dead tourneys, since they are not a member of your team,
or even the living, at the time. The warrior may even return to the contest if a
natural opening can be found for it, or you choose to use your Dark Arena fight to
make that opening (if you still have that option left). Break the no DA, challenge,
or avoid rules and you will be DQed as soon as the transgression is discovered. To
keep the contest playing field as level as possible, we will have no messing with
these rules. Of course you may DA the one time, just as a clarification, but the
second time gets you DQed. This also counts if it is found you bring a second team
in for the purpose of making challenges; you will be DQed.

Scoring is as follows:

1 point for winning
1 point for killing (giving 2 in total, 1 for the win and 1 for the kill)
1 point for at least one of your warriors writing a personal (regardless of number of
personals beyond one you still only get one point). Make sure it is written from
one of your team's warriors and not simply the manager entity or you will not get
  the point.
-1 point for losing
-1 point for being killed (giving -2 in total, -1 for losing and -1 for being killed)
-5 points and the loss of that warrior's slot for scoring the remainder of the
contest for entering a warrior into a REGULAR tourney (again DEAD tourney is open)

The Prizes:
1st place -- +1 bonus to one warrior on the team, 1 resurrection potion, and 1
  favorite knowledge
2nd place -- +1 bonus for one warrior, 1 favorites knowledge
3rd place -- +1 bonus for one warrior

Iron Manager Award -- Run 54 of the possible 60 fights and get a +1 bonus potion

The bonus potions and favorites knowledge must be used on warriors with 5 FE or more
and MUST be used within 2 turns of the end of the contest. The resurrection potion
must be used within 6 months of the end of the contest but may be used on any warrior
regardless of FE. ALL prizes must be used on the contest team, they are NOT
transferable to another team!
