Korga and vicinity:

Aghtamar pushed back her bowl with a sigh of satisfaction. She'd probably eaten
better venison stew, but she couldn't remember when. "So tell us about the new
danger on the road here," she invited.
Cadal drained his tankard of ale and folded his arms on the table. "We don't
know what it is," he said, "but there have been more than a dozen travelers' deaths
between here and Mirkon [the next town east of Korga] that can't be accounted for by
any of the usual hazards. All but one instance were lone travelers, all were moving
after dark. A courier, a couple of traders, the rest we're not sure about. Two
female, the rest male. Karnhorns, mostly, but three Harkenes, a couple westerners,
Convincian, maybe. All armed, four mounted and the others on foot."
"A mixed lot," Fist of Kjarran said, nodding. "Nothing to link them together--"
"Except the way they died. The doctor here that examined some of the bodies
called it 'heart failure'." Cadal grimaced. "Those of us that have been patrolling
the road and found the bodies call it 'dead of fear'. The looks on their faces...."
He shook his head slightly. "Whatever they met terrified them. All but the oldest
two had run long and hard before they dropped. We figure the oldest ones simply died
on the spot where they met...whatever it was."
"Not a lot to go on, if you're thinking we can help you hunt this killer," Zilla
said critically. "I suppose there aren't any tracks?"
"Nothing we can be sure of," Cadal admitted. "My idea is to bait them--send a
likely traveler along the road after dark and follow, hoping to come on something."
"Damned big risk you're asking your decoy to take," Aghtamar pointed out.
"Yes, that's why I only want Lord Protectors on this."
"I can do this," Fist of Kjarran said briskly. "For the glory of the Empire and
in the service of Kjarran and His Daughter Jayde, I will serve as bait to lure out
this killer who preys on innocent travelers!"

Zukal and vicinity:

It was harder to get Veleks into the boat than Ghenis had expected. Dead, it
might have been awkward, but alive...the little thief turned suddenly hysterical,
shrieking and weeping, trashing wildly, and begging not to be given to "the burning
eyes and flashing teeth." Ghenis finally had to knock Veleks out so that he and
Harlund drag him into the rowboat.
"He's nuts," Harlund growled, leaning into his oars as he drove the boat back
toward the shore. "Burning eyes and flashing teeth. Sounds like some kind of kid's
nightmare. He do some kind of drugs?"
"Veleks? No. He's got a few bad habits, but not drugs. He must have seen
something real...but maybe not really what he thinks he saw."
"He couldn't've seen something like that, not on the beach he couldn't. There
aren't any monsters in the woods around here." Harlund paused and looked around
uneasily, looked down into the water, which was filling with the shadows of sunset
faster than the sky was. "Might be different if he'd been in a boat to start with,"
the beach walker muttered. "He might've seen something over the water...."
"Veleks can't swim and had no boat. He was not on the water," Ghenis said
firmly. "Besides, I found what are probably his tracks. He was on the shore road
and left it to run toward the beach, and I do mean run--flat out. Something
terrified him. Veleks is no hero, but he wouldn't run without a reason."
Harlund opened his mouth to argue further, then looked at Ghenis and shut it
again. Smart move.
"Just get us to shore, man. Then I'll pay you, and you can go home. It isn't
your problem."

Malcorn:

Blackie, Lord Malcorn of Malcorn, sat in his study and stared into the fire. He
was alone, and it was very late. A bottle of wine and a goblet sat on the table at
his elbow, but he didn't reach for them. Getting drunk might make him forget his
problems for the night, but in the morning, the problems would still be there, and
he'd have Shew-sized hangover to go with them. Better to pass on the wine.
Had he done the right thing in releasing the Dregur from the Silent Place? Yes.
Or at least, releasing them wasn't a wrong thing. Caging them because the Karnhorns
didn't know how to live with them and hadn't the power to kill them had been a wrong
thing. Blackie believed with his whole heart that death was better than a cage. And
he had known the risks he was taking--the risks he was subjecting everyone in the
area to--when he released the Dregur. Some innocent people would die of encounters
with the Dregur...as innocent people were dying every day at the hands of the
invaders.
Blackie's eyes went to the wine bottle. That was what haunted him, the innocent
people. Hell, even some of the invaders were innocent in all the ways that counted,
drafted from their Eastern homes at the command of some powerful lord and sent to
Alastari to fight and die. Telling himself that fewer innocents would die this way
was cold comfort.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Oh dear. Despite my low kill desire and non-vital aim, it appears that I have
done it again and killed another one. Sorry. If I were a better warrior, I'd no
doubt have fewer kills. At least I am Duelmaster again. It makes me feel a little
better.

                                        Flying Marmoset

                                      SPY REPORT

Thankyouthankyou. It's great for me, The Unknown Spymaster to be back in
VEASTIAN. Hope you enjoy the show. Oh, who am I kidding? I already got paid! For
every winner there is a loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a look at JURIM'S TEAM,
who went down to 3rd from 7th. Life is tough. Coming up with a solid 5-0-0 outing,
WIDOWMAKERS has advanced 5 places in the rankings. Hey everybody, watch out for
SWORDBREAKER, who flew up 18 points in the rankings after mashing SUNGOD DESIGNED ME
like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk
out on the sands. SUNGOD DESIGNED ME was bested by SWORDBREAKER and drops 11 points.
Our battling duelmaster FLYING MARMOSET has managed to hold the title, fending off
NHAVARL's none too subtle advances. Better luck next time, THE FAMILY. 4 out of 5
gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location.
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the VEASTIAN arena.
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Well, just when you thought it
was safe to put a new warrior in the arena. No no! OFUKU, a mere boy, was slain by
NORPRAMINE this turn. Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally in
the arena with you and see what happens.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in VEASTIAN have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Well, there goes another Spy
Report. Good luck in next week's fights. Its been real, and its been fun, but it
hasn't been real fun...-- The Unknown Spymaster

Sungod Designed Me -- Ah? If you say so. Am I supposed to be impressed? Quite a
decent record you've got there, but then, this IS a small arena. What I don't
understand is how I jumped you. -- Nhavarl

Jenny the Mule -- For six skills, I don't mind the loss at all. You were very clear
in your demonstrations, thank you. -- Tiro Coco
P.S. No doubt this is Lady Egenai's influence.

Foecrusher -- Thing is, I'm not your foe, see? I'm just an ordinary Shew in the
street. -- Stiltz
P.S. You're too tall, or else you're part Shewish yourself. One or the other.

Tenzo Watanabe -- Ah, excellent! Just what I needed. -- Tronji-Zar

I have no patience with convicted thieves. If they were GOOD thieves, they wouldn't
have been caught at all, much less convicted. -- Carline

How tedious not getting to see what people REALLY said to me. -- Stiltz

Regarding last turn's personals: Who said what now? -- Jack/Reverend

Hang on, I'll run 'em again. -- Temp Ed.

All -- It has come to my attention that I ought to, from time to time, reiterate the
fact that Jack Wolfspider and Revered Boz and played by the same person -- namely me.
Sorry for any confusion that my dual personality may have caused. -- Jack/Reverend

Sungod Designed Me -- Time to show each other what we got. Good luck. -- Jenny The
Mule

Last turn's personals:

Nhavarl -- Looks like you're up and by the time you read this we will know so here is
to a good match, if my challenge goes through that is. -- Sungod Designed Me

Jenny the Mule -- Your name definitely fits you, because I have challenged you and
almost every time 'cept this last time anyways. I hope you ain't avoiding me. --
Sungod Designed Me

Flying Marmoset -- We all know how angels get their wings. So how did you lose
yours, because you obviously cannot fly. -- Young Blood

Winter Witch -- Yeah next time we fight I'll have a bucket of water with your name on
it so I can personally send your ass back to Oz where you came from. - Bishop

Jack -- I eventually plan to make a full return to Veastian. Maybe in June. As of
right now I only have the funds to run three slow teams a month and maybe an ADM
warrior. When I do start back up here I'll have to drop a couple of Teams. I'll
figure something out. As for TOGS, I'm still up for that. I'll have to get a new
team though; I sent the old one to Dragonhead! -- CFH

Flying Marmoset -- I hope this isn't a case of discrimination against those of us who
happen to have the good fortune to be Rirorni. There's been a lot of that going
around, too much of it. -- Nhavarl

Foecrusher -- Obviously, I am not your foe. In fact, if all you lesser peoples would
simply realize that we, the Favored of Kjarran, are not your enemies but rather your
guardians and teachers, all would go much more smoothly. -- Tiro Coco

Lifetaker -- Sorry, but I'm still using mine, short stuff. -- Stiltz

Tenzo Watanabe -- You know, I've never cared for warriors of your style. Nothing
personal. -- Carline

The Mordant Deserter makes a good warm-up opponent. How about if I fight the
Persistent Beggar next? -- Tronji-Zar

Reverend Boz -- Don't put me on the spot before it's time, boy. I hate being forced
to choose, and publicly, before I have to. -- Don John, fence-sitter extraordinaire
P.S. But I go way back here in Veastian, and I think that if those of us--the
Harkenes, the Shews, want to be independent and worship Serimna and Danisjo
Quickhand, we should be and do so.
P.P.S. I'd go with Kyreses, if he can get his situation back under control. He was
a man who'd listen to both sides. But I don't care for fanatics of ANY persuasion.
P.P.P.S. And I'm not sure how much authority that Karnhorn admiral has now that
Kurukar's closed the canal that connects the Trier with the Storm Sea. He can't get
reinforcements now, can he?

Youngblood -- All the years I've been in this arena I've graduated seven and had tons
of Duelmasters but never got a TV out there. You get one your first try. It's not
fair, but congratulations. -- Reverend Boz

Widowmakers -- Welcome to Veastian. -- Reverend Boz (Korgan Crusade)

30 April 2003
All -- Remember to put your arena number on your strategy sheets. Strategies turned
in without an arena number run the risk of missing the turn. -- NAIEI

10 May 2003
To All -- Fellow managers, I humbly request your help. My team (Ex Oblivione) was
started in Monuntial (DM 34) back in '92. They were active for seven months. I have
lost all early traces of them. If any of you can help with copies of relevant
newsletters or, if you fought one of my warriors, copies of the fights, I would
greatly appreciate it. I only have one of my original warriors left from the early
team now active in DM 60. You can diplo me with any info here in the wonderful city
of Aradi. Thank you in advance. -- Enigma, manager Ex Oblivione
