These things always started on such nights. Arenamaster Jailon stood on the guard-walk of the tower and stared out at the waters of the Trier. The beam of the Harbor Light behind him, even concentrated by its great reflector, didn't reach far, but the lightning that walked across the lake provided all the illumination he needed. "Tell me what I'm seeing," he said. He knew what he was seeing, but he wanted to hear the young Thane's opinion. Tolimanj grimaced. "According to the magicians I've asked, we're seeing 'spirits of the vasty deep'. In simpler terms, monsters. The consensus is that they're being conjured, or freed, or attracted, or in SOME way instigated by the Black Kaliv of Kurukar. This, I don't know--they don't come with 'Summoned in Kurukar' labels. But I do know that they're destroying our shipping, and we depend on that shipping for a lot of our income." "Kati-Tei's shipping?" "No, all the ports along the coast are suffering, some of them more than we are. Amen-Tei is in serious difficulties. Krill's port is shut down completely. Fishing boats aren't going out from the smaller towns and villages. Rumor has it that Veastian is suffering, too, and the Free Ports up that way." Jailon, a decent man but a Fratsfan from his toenails to his blond mane, curled a lip. "We are not responsible for the well-being of a Karnhorn port. Let the monsters devastate them. See if I care!" Tolimanj glanced aside. After a moment, he said, "Monsters seldom acknowledge borders, and Alastari is too small to ignore what goes on among our neighbors." Jailon snorted but bowed his head in acknowledgement. "Point taken. But why have you brought me here? I am no sailor to deal with 'monsters of the vasty deep'." "In the past, it has been the custom to recruit gladiators--" "Have you counted the gladiators in our arena lately?" "Yes. There are, of course, Lord Protectors on the Isle, but few seem to LEAVE the Isle anymore, even to deal with monsters in their former homes." The young Thane's face tightened, so that he looked older than his twenty-five years. "My father argued against admitting the gladiatorial system to Convincia--it was the final reason why the old Thane had him killed. All the public-spirited and athletic young adults rushed to the arena to offer themselves for Greywand's defensive army, and they either died or were processed to the Isle. Those who remain...are old, or disinclined to serve the greater good." He gestured dismissal. "No, I am not going to seek gladiators to fight these monsters. Though if some offer, they will be accepted." He turned to face Jailon squarely. "I want the Standbys and Dark Arena warriors to turn out in the defense of Kati-Tei." Amen-Tei: "We are prepared," Dame Mingia said, "to make...handsome concessions to any Standby or Dark Arena warrior who will volunteer for this mission--" "What, free burial in the lake?" Maurice Karn, the Ambitious Guard asked. Krego Dehann, the Veteran Mercenary, waved him to silence. "I can see why you want us," he said. "We're here all the time, not dashing off to tournaments or what have you. But we're not sailors. We're not magicians--well, most of us aren't." He squinted at the hooded Cult Member, who remained silent. "What are we supposed to DO?" The assistant to the High Thane raised an eyebrow. "Why, nothing but what you do so well: fight. Two or three of you will be posted on ships leaving our harbor-- as many ships as we can cover in that fashion. And when the monsters attack, you will fight them, and lead the crews and passengers of the vessels in fighting." SPY REPORT It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last week's fights. Hey everybody, watch out for THURNOCK, who flew up 12 points in the rankings after mashing STILJANZ like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. TIRANIAN was overcame by DART and drops 7 points. Going for the gusto and coming up with aught but bloody knuckles was VEASTIAN's CONVICTED ASSASSIN, who was turned away from the Duelmastership by CUTTER. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps T.P.s at bay. Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the VEASTIAN arena. Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the most interesting, though! GLADIUS says to his dog--'Who should I fight this week?'. Dog says 'BANDIT PRINCE'. So the guy dies. Moral? Put lying dogs to sleep. Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle. Well, there's the manager of the VEASTIAN giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that 'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some tracks. Its been real, and its been fun, but it hasn't been real fun...-- The Unknown Spymaster DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME DART 3865 14 23 1 79 WOLF RIDERS (391) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -HANDOW 3960 10 4 0 78 BADLANDS (227) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -SHADOW TOMB 4071 7 6 0 61 BADLANDS (227) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TIRANIAN 4391 11 10 0 50 THE FAMILY (116) TIRRAJ 4429 6 1 0 47 THE FAMILY (116) GRINIAN 4407 9 6 0 42 THE FAMILY (116) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME THURNOCK 3433 5 1 0 33 RAIDERS OF GOR (341) STILJANZ 4409 8 6 0 30 THE FAMILY (116) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SULLIUS MAXIMUS 3434 4 2 0 17 RAIDERS OF GOR (341) -TREESTUMP 4357 2 5 0 16 WOLF RIDERS (391) ONE-EYE 4447 1 0 0 11 WOLF RIDERS (391) -TORE 3948 1 3 0 10 BADLANDS (227) GHAN-BURI-GHAN 4436 1 1 0 8 INTO THE WILD (445) ARN 3430 0 2 0 2 RAIDERS OF GOR (341) KONJOR 4448 0 1 0 1 THE FAMILY (116) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
