                         STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE -- Turn 2

The Avid Fans forged ahead to a tenuous one-point lead over the defending
champions, Mordred's Madmen. Mutant Hammerz had a big turn with Angel Hammer looking
more like Angel of Death with a second kill. Mike's Morgue drops to fourth despite a
decent round.
Two new teams entered the fray, Mojo P@trol who was active as of Turn 206 and
Sprite's Rogues who were not. As per the new rule, all fights against Sprite's
Rogues counted as even this turn only. Thanks Garth for the information and
suggestion, but it is soooo much easier this way--and allows those who are scoring
from home to keep track (and recheck my math for that matter?). Abraxis, I still
need to know how many recognition points Baloo had before his fight with Nora Bates
on turn 207. Your team's score is not official until that information is received.
And Apple Jack or Manager, please let me know the rec points for Male Dominance going
into his fight with (the late) What's It's. Thanks for your help.

Zukal:

Ghenis watched the ship _Relentless_ ease out into the channel and brushed his
hands together. It was bound for Niatoli to further certain interests of the dark
cult. On it was Veleks, and Cousin Og, who would look after the small thief...one
way or another. Which freed him to attend to other matters.
First of those other matters was a meeting with Pelishtekan, the Ferencian who
was currently the 'chief priest' of the cult. Ghenis scowled to hide his grimace of
disgust. He didn't like the Ferencian. In fact, he loathed the man. But it wasn't
necessary to like him, not really. As long as Pelishtekan did his job, nothing else
counted.
And right now, the man's job was to explain what manner of creature, monster, or
whatever was hunting over the lands just north of Zukal. And how the damned thing
could be fought and destroyed. It was in the way of certain plans that he had made
for the benefit of the dark cult...and of himself, of course. The dark power did not
expect his minions to work for nothing but the joy of it.
Ghenis left the waterfront behind and wove his way through the twisted and
noisome alleys of one of Zukal's poorest districts. The cult always had its centers
among the homes of the poor. They were the ones who had something to gain from it,
and nothing to lose, from shaking up the old order, after all. Ghenis smiled just a
little. He liked shaking things up.
The cult was headquartered in a tall narrow building squeezed between other tall
narrow buildings. The cellar, which was dark and always damp and divided into tiny
rooms no more than six feet square, was used for...storage. More or less. The
ground floor, reached by going down half a dozen steps from street level, was the
shrine itself. The level above that was where the main work of the cult was done,
the plotting and planning, the gathering of information, the good stuff. Above that,
two floors of small rooms where members of the cult lived if they couldn't do better
for themselves. And on the top floor, the pigeons that carried messages from points
as distant as Zuwayza and Murska in the north, Rocanis, Xochithlan, and even Tricorus
in the south. Most people had no idea how far the cult reached.
Which was another source of amusement to Ghenis. The authorities here in Zukal,
the very heart of the cult, had no idea that it was anything more than a handful of
dissatisfied commoners meeting to worship some petty godling. Ha! If Bey Sekahos
knew how near he stood to the rim of disaster, how fast he was sliding down the slope
into hell--! Even the Bandit Princes, who had a clearer understanding of their city,
didn't know that the cult was gaining power daily and would soon be ready to make its
move. IF the monster north of the city could be dealt with.
Ghenis pushed open the door and stepped toward Pelishtekan's office.

Near Malcorn:

The finger of light slid across the surface of the tall stone and touched the
worn carvings, which leaped into sudden clarity. The little clearing, which had been
empty except for Lord Malcorn and Tiljanz al Burgos, the young Karnhorn diplomat, was
suddenly full of shadows. Or something. Tiljanz could feel the weight of a dozen
minds thinking about him--calculating minds, hostile minds, hungry ones. He held
himself still and quiet with difficulty. This was Lord Malcorn's meeting; he himself
was just present as a witness.
Words came out of the darkness, hollow as caves, clear as trumpets. "Why are
you here, Malcorn?"
"To demand that you enforce your side of the agreement we made, Dregur," the
lord of Malcorn replied. If a great tree had spoken, its voice might have sounded
like that.
"Our side? What have we, the true and original lords of all the land between
the lakes, to 'enforce' at the command of an ephemeral like you?"
"Do not play games with me. A deal was made and sworn under just such a moon,
that the dregur would attack only those who entered this land at the command of the
Easterner Inzolas. In return for this, you were released from the Silent Place."
"And if we choose now to disregard that 'deal' you speak of?" Idle inquiry.
"The Silent Place is still there."
"You think you could return us to that captivity?" Scorn and amusement. "You?"
"If you do not keep your side of the agreement," now Malcorn's voice was like
iron, cold black iron, "I will return you to that captivity. Me." At that moment,
Tiljanz did not doubt that Blackie would do just that, whatever the cost to himself.
"We did make an oath." The voice was the same, but different. A different
dregur speaking, Tiljanz thought. "The oath is a binding already. He could do it."
Warning, cool consideration.
"Because a few of us have chosen to Hunt freely, as we used to? Unfair! This
land was OURS. If we stretch out our hand to take it back, where is the injustice in
that?" Passion.
"The injustice is in the breaking of our oath. The land itself will reject an
oathbreaker. It has always been so." Stern command. "We must keep our part of the
bargain, or by our failure we release Lord Malcorn from his. And he could then
return us to the Silent Place, if he is willing to pay the price." A pause. "And
you can see that he is so willing."
Objection. "Those who Hunt alone will not be called back to the kennel, even by
you."
Unyielding command. "Then I myself will lead a Hunt against them."

Between Ibizond and Korga:

The horseman started to turn away, but two of the hounds made a determined
attack on the three gladiators as they scrambled out of their sheltering tree. Now,
the tree was a trap rather than a shelter. Cadal was first out, hammering at the
nearest hound with his heavy blade.
Aghatamar was just behind him, close enough to slash at the hound trying to take
him from the side. The horseman turned back, just as the moon shone through a gap in
the clouds overhead. Aghtamar sucked in her breath in shock. There was a face, she
repeated that to herself as a litany against the unknown. Two eyes--she shuddered
and wrenched her gaze away from them, feeling her blood turn to ice and her bones to
sand. A beak of a nose, a hunting bird's beak. Gash of a mouth, with an icy glitter
of fangs.
Behind her, Zilla muttered a prayer to Sermina and struck two-handed at the
hound, awkwardly because she didn't want to look directly at it. That hound was no
beast that ever curled up quietly before a fire or accepted a pat on the head for a
job well done. Cadal lunged at his hound and came near to spitting it on his sword,
but the uncanny creature twisted away. The horseman laughed, a sound which would
chill the strongest heart, and turned away again, riding up the road toward whatever
his, or its third hound had cornered. Fist of Kjarran, most likely, but there was no
way to help him now. They had their own problems.
The hounds had a pattern of swirling in to attack and then out before they could
be struck in return, coordinating their efforts smoothly without needing their
master's guidance. They must have done this many times before. Aghtamar thought of
the other people dead along this road and knew they must have sustained just such an
attack: the horn with its message of fear, then these uncanny beasts with their
teasing and toying, and finally the huntsman on his horse. Not a good death. If
there was such a thing as a 'good death'.
While these thoughts were flitting through her mind, she kept her sword moving
as well. The hounds seemed reluctant, maybe even totally unwilling, to close with
them, but they wouldn't leave them alone, either. "The damned things are trying to
wear us down," she muttered. And it might work. She was already breathing hard, and
she could hear Zilla panting beside her. She couldn't hear Cadal, but he was
farthest from her.
"We've got to finish these," Cadal stated. "Fist of Kjarran is going to need
our help." A shuffle and lunge, a hound yelped and dodged back. "Except they won't
stand--"
"And if we just go to Fist, turn our backs on these hounds," Zilla growled,
"likely they'll jump on us from behind."
"There must be SOME way we can kill or cripple these damned hounds!" Aghtamar
snapped. "Anything that lives can be killed. It's a natural law or something."
"We're not going to find it tonight except by chance," Cadal said. "And we have
to go help Fist. If we all move together, back to back...."
"Right! Let's move," Aghtamar agreed. "On the count of three?"
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
The hound that Fist of Kjarran had crippled was dragging itself down the road
toward its approaching master, whining pitifully. If it had been a proper dog, the
gladiator might have regretted the injury. As it was...serve the damned beast right.
As the hound had appeared to grow when it charged him, so did the hunter. What
might have been a big horse--if it was a horse at all--became huge, and its rider
dominated the sky. He...it seemed to wear a crown of cold lights, or maybe there
were northern lights in the sky behind its head. No, that wasn't north, that was
southeast. Fist shook his own head to clear out the fantasies. As the rider passed
the crippled hound, he cried out in a terrible voice, a word Fist didn't know and
didn't want to know. An evil word, he was sure. Maybe a spell, or a vow of
vengeance. Not that it mattered! He had the protection of Kjarran and Jayde. He
raised his sword against the moon-colored blade that was swinging down out of the
stars above him.

                                      SPY REPORT

Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out STORMCROWE to
see what's new. Like, MORDRED'S MADMEN had to be so embarrassed when they got kicked
off #1 spot by MIKES MORGUE! Way to go MIKES MORGUE! I don't wanna hurt anybody's
feelings or anything, but NORTHERN LIGHTS really goofed with their 0-5-0. MYTH TAKES
like really fought hard to move up to 3rd from 12th. Way to go! Cut this out and
put it in your scrapbooks, DYNASTIC! 'Cause they got 4-1-0 and moved up to 7th! MVP
award for SANGAN? DARQUE FORCES' proud of him after beating ANGEL HAMMER and getting
16 points. Talk about yer big time losers! ANGEL HAMMER got smashed by SANGAN, and
lost 12 points! Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think IPECAC
should let SNOWFALL be Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. Is the
Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. A DEAL'S DEAL was STORMCROWE's most avoided team. Is there some
award for that? Is there some deep dark secret why MUTANT HAMMERZ's been avoiding A
DEAL'S DEAL so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Can SUPERIOR FORCES'
MALE DOMINANCE be more popular than me? He was challenged the most, but is that
really the same? People were asking me did DAGORA SAVON REALLY challenge ARROGANT
WURM? (all right, maybe they didn't, but it sounded good!) It wasn't a spectacular
fight, or anything, but ARROGANT WURM wants me to write about it since she beat
DAGORA SAVON. Satisfied?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Hey! Quit laughing! Just because
LEATHERBACK had 9-6-0 was no reason for MORDRED'S MADMEN to send him to the Dark
Arena! Stop it! I hear SUPERIOR FORCES sent MALE DOMINANCE to the Dark Arena.
What, is that like not well-lit, or what? Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys
can do?
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

Sangan -- I have great respect for you, my friend. You did not back down from the
bloodfeud challenge. I had to send someone to avenge Luthien's death, as I'm sure
you would do the same if any member of Darque Forces were killed. We all know that
anytime we step into the arena any one of us can be carted off to the morgue. Losing
a friend is never good. I hope we can be friends now that this bloodfeud is over...
that is all. -- Voodoo

Snide Clemens -- It was no insult to honor, my friend. It was a bloodfeud that is
all, nothing else. It was something one of my pupils in MOJO P@TROL had to do. We
drew straws and Dagora won. If something like that happens to one of your family
members, you would do the same I hope? Well that is all.
P.S. We at MOJO P@TROL left you a big bill at The Shadows Fountain. You did say you
were buying? Tearsa loves to get drunk.

Sangan -- I have the highest respect for you now, for accepting my challenge.
Nothing personal. We would have challenged anyone who has killed any one of MOJO
P@TROL. Next time I see you around any tavern I'll buy you a drink. You are cute.
Later. -- Dagora

Concertina -- Hey there, my lovely lady. I'm sorry that you were not able to finish
the fight. By the looks of it you were winning. Seems like you had some fans out
there in the stands. They sure didn't like me. I wonder why they don't. I'm smart,
good looking, I dress good and have a good sense of humor and a good attitude.
What's the deal, babe? I did win despite all the insults. Serves the crowd right.
Ciao, Babe. -- Vor'eiv

Benevolence -- Uh ah good fight my little boy vs. a great fighter to be able to beat
me. You are a big boy now. Next turn we meet it won't be that easy. Till next
time. -- Tearsa

The Statistician -- Wow, I'm surprised I beat you with your impressive record. Man
it was a grueling fight. I thought I lost. Man you are great at parrying. Well
thanks for the dance Babe, later. -- Zindella

A Talent Scout -- A good fighter never avoids another good fighter. We learn from
each other. My friend, next time we meet I might win. Later. -- Xavier

Slaughterhouse Soldiers -- Please forgive my lack of communication in the DM 45 P-
ads. I am preparing to go overseas for another mission trip and my online time is
limited. -- Hammer

Ming -- That's assuming you WANTED to kill a houseplant. Killing them accidentally
is easy. -- Snowfall, veteran killer of houseplants

Alice Osborne -- Good work, ma'am. -- Shard the uninspired, who does not attempt the
killing of houseplants, nor does he attempt to act as a mime and he wishes they
(mimes) would stop trying to act like gladiators or else get out on the sands and
prove their right to do so

Jane Faust -- Heck, you melted me as fast as a dragon-blast. -- Ghost of Ice
Princess, now a steam cloud

The Beer Vendor -- But what if I wanted a soft-drink instead? -- Sunflash

Cannonball Hammer -- Well, darn. Go hammer a cannonball and leave me alone! --
Walrus
P.S. Besides, I'm endangered here.

Concertina -- You look very, um, fetching in those briefs, wench. Let's see how you
look in shorts, hmm? -- Shard

An Announcement Concerning the Brotherhood of the Blade Alliance:
I have chosen to withdraw my membership from the Brotherhood of the Blade
alliance. The years I have spent in the alliance have been the best of my DM career.
I leave the alliance with many great friends and will always remain close to my
former brethren.
The Brotherhood of the Blade will not skip a beat without my membership. It
remains in very capable hands and its roster is among the strongest in the game.
With the return on some of its founding members to DM, I know the BOB will continue
to grow in strength and prestige in the years to come. -- The Sandman
