                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Many years ago, while watching through the Alastarian magic ball, the good
witches and warlocks observed another far away land. They saw some silly things, and
often used their looking glass ball in the evenings to laugh at the goings on in this
land. What they saw....
After World War II and through the mid 70's, there existed in very Southern
Indiana some very small schools who participated in high school eight-man football.
The conference, titled the Pocket Athletic Conference, or PAC, was known for some
exciting times.
Eight-man football was played on a 40 by 80 yard field with first downs earned
after 15 yards. It was a wide open game with scoring the same as eleven man
football. It was not uncommon to see 40-50 point games per team, and in one
undefeated year, The Cannelton Bulldogs won 81-0 and 91-8.
The offense was 5 lineman and 3 in the backfield, and most players went both
ways. Coach, a manager in Stormcrowe, was Captain of one team playing center on
offense, and center-linebacker on defense. Few are the known football leagues that
employed a "pulling center", but such did The Bulldogs.
So influential was the league on Coach, that he learned his love of competition
in the PAC. More importantly he crowned his one and only homecoming queen and scored
his very first "french kiss" doing so.
Small school were not so uncommon then, as Cannelton was a town of 1800 with 42
graduates in Coach's senior class. (No wonder they had to play both ways.)
So please join Coach in the days of yesteryear as he brings you the warriors of
the Pocket Athletic Conference--a mediocre assembly. May they do well in Stormcrowe,
and not bring too many laughs to the Alastarian witches and warlocks.

Riztab:

"There was something out there," Tillouisa whispered, squinting into the moonlit
distance. "I SAW it moving across the water."
"Somebody night-fishing in a rowboat," Song of Summer said in a normal voice.
"Everything isn't monsters, Til."
"Ha! That just shows how much YOU know." Tillouisa abandoned her whisper and
scowled at her teammate triumphantly. "I've SEEN monsters, Summer. I know what I'm
talking about. There are ALWAYS monsters around water--"
"In the Shagornan Desert, maybe, but--"
"Everywhere! Water's tricky, Summer. You can't TRUST it," the Rirorni woman
stated positively.
Before Song of Summer could reply to that, a cry floated to them from the dark
lake. Not a human cry, nor the call of any nightbird that either woman had heard
before. There was a little of the wolf howling in it, but what wolf would be in the
middle of miles of water? And even the howl of a wolf did not chill the blood quite
so effectively.
After a moment, Song of Summer swallowed twice and said, "It might not be a
monster even so." She didn't sound like she believed that. "It might be...just some
strange creature out there."
There was another cry from the lake, this time all too human, shrill with terror
and despair. Splashes accompanied it.
"I guess there was a night-fisherman out there, after all," Tillouisa noted.
"You don't have to sound so cheerful about it! That poor man probably died
horribly."
"He would've heard the rumors of monsters same as we did," Tillouisa said,
shrugging. "If he chose to risk the lake anyway, well, what did he expect?" She
turned away from the waterfront.
"I don't suppose there's anything we could do to help him?"
"I don't suppose so. He's probably dead by now. Come on." Tillouisa grabbed
her teammate's arm and started towing her back up the sloping street.
     "Where are we going?"
"Around this block of buildings. They're all collapsed, and we couldn't get
through them. I want to check out the old records building now while the monster's
out on the lake."
"Til! You're INSANE! We don't know there's only ONE monster."
     "We can find out, then."

Malcorn:

"It looks like somebody laid a plate, or a shield, or, I dunno, a cartwheel or
something on the field," Blacklock said doubtfully.
"If plates, shields, or cartwheels came twenty feet across, yes, it surely
does," Birdsong agreed.
Blacklock moved to study the circle of flattened grain--which was to have been
cut today--from another angle. Not that there was anything different to see.
Perfectly circular, perfectly flat. "It'd be hard to cut grain that's been trampled
down like that, wouldn't it?"
"Yeah, really hard--like impossible, and that's a lot of grain. It isn't like
we've got so much to spare, you know." Birdsong knelt and touched the smashed
stalks, drawing her hand back quickly. "They're frozen!"
"A twenty-foot cartwheel of ice?" Blacklock speculated doubtfully. "Well,
anyway, it's too bad, but it happened. What caused it, and what do we do about it?"
"I don't know to both, but I think..." Birdsong stood and frowned at the ruined
grain. "I think we tell Lord Malcorn."
"Oh, SH-- uh, shoot! You think he's been dabbling in magic and did this?"
"Of course not! Lord Malcorn isn't careless or destructive," Birdsong stated
positively. "But he'll know what to do."
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
Lord Malcorn, Blackie in more informal situations, was staring at another circle
of smashed crops. Hay, this time, and a couple of rabbits who had been so unlucky as
to be inside the circle when disaster fell. He knew, in a general sense, what had
caused it--when he had loosed the Dregur from the Silent Place, other things had
escaped also. From the Silent Place, and from other restraints elsewhere. He didn't
know exactly which "other things" had caused this, but he was sure that the ultimate
blame attached to him. That was the trouble with taking drastic measures to counter
drastic problems. You never knew what secondary effects might occur. Or what kind
of measures would be required to deal with the secondary problems, and what tertiary
problems might arise from THAT. He could spend the rest of his life cleaning up
after the results of releasing the Dregur.... But then, he could have spent the rest
of his life cleaning up after the invaders, too.
He sighed and turned to the farmer. "Keep your livestock and your workers out
of the fields," he directed. "There may be more of these, and it will require a
complicated bit of work to put a stop to it."

Warriors and managers of the Free Cities, your participation in these events is
invited. An email to Livia@reality.com or a personal is all it takes. -- the Scribe

Between Ibizond and Korga:

The hound that Fist of Kjarran had crippled was dragging itself down the road
toward its approaching master, whining pitifully. If it had been a proper dog, the
gladiator might have regretted the injury. As it was...serve the damned beast right.
As the hound had appeared to grow when it charged him, so did the hunter. What
might have been a big horse--if it was a horse at all--became huge, and its rider
dominated the sky. He...it seemed to wear a crown of cold lights, or maybe there
were northern lights in the sky behind its head. No, that wasn't north, that was
southeast. Fist shook his own head to clear out the fantasies. As the rider passed
the crippled hound, he cried out in a terrible voice, a word Fist didn't know and
didn't want to know. An evil word, he was sure. Maybe a spell, or a vow of
vengeance. Not that it mattered! He had the protection of Kjarran and Jayde. He
raised his sword against the moon-colored blade that was swinging down out of the
stars above him.
"Kjarran and Jayde guide my hand!" Fist shouted, and then the blow fell against
his blade with enough force that it drove him to his knees. The hunter's blade was
white as bone, his own turned red as life's blood, and warmth came into his hands
from his two-handed grip on it, and down his arms, to counter the icy air that
cloaked his opponent. He was a little surprised to find himself still alive after
such a blow, more surprised still to find his blade unbroken. Nothing but the direct
intervention of his god Kjarran and the god's Daughter Jayde could have preserved his
life, he was sure. And the only proper way to show appreciation of that aid was to
get up and fight. Which he would do.
As the hunter's blade was withdrawn and raised for another blow, Fist lurched to
his feet. The hunter was thundering more of his evil-sounding words, they seemed to
streak toward him like arrows, like an icy hail or the bitterest wind of winter, and
it was hard to stand against them, the coldness and the hate and the fury.
Impossible to stand against another powerful sword-stroke delivered in their wake.
Fist did the only thing he could think of and threw himself forward under the falling
blade, slashing at the horse's forelegs where it reared high, then at its belly as he
rolled under it and out into the road.
The horse screamed as cold-gleaming coils emerged from its belly and came down
on all four feet, stumbled when one of its front legs wouldn't hold, and fell. The
hunter leaped free, but the fallen horse was now between him and his prey. Cold
light, colder than moonlight and without that clean purity, shivered around him.
The intestines that had spilled from the horse writhed like snakes, or like an
animated snare, coils twisting toward Fist. If they caught him, the gladiator
believed they would be like a snare and would hold him for the vengeance of the
hunter. He edged backward, not taking his eyes off the hunter but wondering uneasily
what had become of the hounds. The idea of one or two of those hell-hounds coming up
behind was enough to shake the steadiest nerves.
As though in answer to his worry, one of the hounds howled pain behind him.
"We've got your back," Cadal said. At that moment, the barbarian's voice was
the sweetest sound Fist could imagine.
"Serimna shield us all with her mercy!" Zilla added.
There were several butchery whacks interspersed with screams, and Aghtamar
growled, "What does it take to kill the damned thing?"
The knowledge that his friends were at his back, ready to stand and fight beside
him, was more warming than sunlight.
"The hounds won't close with us on their own," Cadal reported from close behind
him. "If we can take out the hunter, we may be home clear on this."
"That won't be easy," Fist of Kjarran observed. "These things can be hurt, but
damned if I know what will kill them." He staggered as one foot was dragged out from
under him. Someone caught his arm and kept him from falling while he looked down.
And swore. A loop of the horse's intestines had wrapped itself around his ankle. He
slashed downward to free his foot, then threw himself to the side just as the hunter
struck. Blades rang together as one of his comrades parried the blow. The hunter
spoke more of his unknown words that might be spells or cursing. Or really cursing,
if it came to that, really laying a curse.
Fist pushed himself to his feet again and faced his opponent grimly. "Kjarran
and Jayde, this has got to STOP." He raised his sword, noting that the blade had
gone red again, and advanced on the dark shape of the hunter. The blade burned as
hot as the hunter was cold and made a sound like a deep-voiced bell very far away.
Fist felt a presence, a force, move through his body, and without willing it he
lunged forward, driving the bright-burning blade toward the hunter. There was a
roaring around him, and he felt as though he'd been caught in a twist of wind, or an
earthquake, something natural and violent and beyond his control. It was a relief to
faint.

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly STORMCROWE games. There were bitter words at A DEAL'S
DEAL's guildhouse after a 0-5-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into 19th.
Dark Arena anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner!
Witness how this week DARQUE FORCES went 3-2-0 to move up 7 in the rankings.
Traditionally the first week is hardest. This week was no exception for POP STARS
who suffered at 0-5-0. Seek council and take courage! SHARLA MANSON caught the eye
of many in the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested MARILYN and was
awarded 20 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, HOT LIPS
put down STORM SERPENT, causing him to lose 16 points of recognition in the process.
Not for nothing has BINGE N PURGE in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne,
and this week she's proven hers combat skill yet again. Informants "close" to the
city champion have told me that he never fights without pantyhose on beneath his
armor. Watch out!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. My inside sources tell me that the
team to beat in STORMCROWE these days is DYNASTIC. At least, most blades in town are
looking to avoid them. Apparently the stalwarts of MORDRED'S MADMEN are catching the
bulk of jests down at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids.
Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. MYTH OLOGY take
warning! You have more than a few enemies in STORMCROWE. I cannot but express pride
for the fearlessness of BEDWYR who cast caution to the winds and challenged THE BEER
VENDOR, a fighter 28 points higher. The PENDRAGON CYCLE stable will be up late
tonight, for indeed it was BEDWYR who claimed victory in the contest, ascending 24 in
recognition!
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers
the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off
city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier
than the sword, but a maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Hey all, my name is Coach, and I am bringing members of The Old Pocket Athletic
Conference into Stormcrowe. Be kind and gentle as you should not expect too much
from members of an old eight-man football conference. Yes, the P.A.C. brings back
lots of old memories that I hope to relive in Alastari. -- Coach

Jack Wolfspider -- I am unable to provide you with Baloo's recognition points at this
time. Being incarcerated, I am able to store very little. I only have fights one
turn back. I have written customer service for a duplicate. -- Abraxis
P.S. I do not downchallenge!

Allow me to present to you The Pocket Athletic Conference (P.A.C.)...Fort Branch
"Twigs", Dale "Golden Aces", Rockport "Zebras", North Posey "Vikings", and Oakland
City "Acorns". My true team, The Cannelton "Bulldogs" will remain in my hip pocket.
-- Coach

Congratulations to Bing N Purge, The Stormcrowe Duelmaster. We didn't even know what
that was in my day. -- Coach

Avid Fans -- We didn't have a Beer Vendor, a Color Commentator, or a talent scout,
but we did have a Janitor. -- Coach

We hope you all did well in The Mailer. -- P.A.C.

Vendetta Inc is here for the benefit of the Cartel. Know this, we are training under
the Goat's banner. Who has come back to the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse to make a
stand for the Delarquan way of life, without further ado, Master Darque (leader),
C.F.H. (Cpt), Firehawk (Warrior), Abraxis (warrior), Goat (warrior). As you read the
names of this stable begin to count your losses, and remember how you lost to these
managers in the past. -- Vendetta Inc.

Place Vendetta Inc. in the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse contest. -- Goat

VC -- Finally. -- Goat

Jack Wolfspider -- Der are some ugly, ugly, ugly, ugly folks waltzin in fer da killer
parade. An we'z makin em some room as quick as we kin. Onlys thing troublin me...
whats am I gonna do wif em after tha contest? Civilized company dey ain't. --
Applejack

All -- Posthumous Pete...he's as reasonable as most folks what comes my way.
However, dis fellers got high-jinks probs, an he plans to work out his frustrations
on his opponents head-bones. -- Applejack

Vor'eiv T. -- *sniff* You clouds the issue, sir. Like'ns not, you'll be singing
with the choir invisible before the next cycle starts. -- Concertina

Diminutive -- No one knows how mad I can get. Is aping-out possible? We'll see. --
Jill (an official member of the squirrel people)

Shard -- I can't hear you, slug-bait. Speak up now or forever hold your peace. Stop
that! Stop that! (s'not what I meant and you know it) -- Concertina

All -- I'm Atta-Here! (and you're not)

Uther -- What's the deal with the deadly attacks? I thought we were friends! --
Sunflash

Ipecac -- You make me throw up. -- Snowfall

Gargle Spew -- Remind me not to go to dinner with you! -- Shard

Tearsa -- But the next win's mine. We have a deal, don't forget! -- Walrus

Which rounds out an oh-fer turn for the Northern Lights, and why do *I* have to get
the blame just because my fight was last? The others lost, too. -- Frostbite the
ill-used

Statistician -- If that's what thrills you...but it seems an odd fancy. -- Snowfall

Tearsa -- Actually I lucked out. I was tore up--notice the inits I got from our
match? Thank you. -- Benevolence
P.S. Till next time.

Near Myth -- Couldn't find fault with what I received. Thanks. I see you're back to
your winning ways! I like the name of your team and warriors. -- Userious
P.S. Did you find your favorite?
P.P.S. Don't mythcalculate my intentions.

TOURNEY FREEZE CHANGE -- ADVANCE NOTICE

Beginning at the Winter Face-to-Face in Tempe (January 2004), we will implement
several changes affecting tournaments. The tournament announcement for the upcoming
FTF and future tourneys will reflect these changes.
First, we will eliminate the tourney freeze for all regular DM warrior classes.
Regular DM warriors will not be classed ahead of the tournament, but instead will
fight according to their FE on the date of the tourney. There will still be a freeze
for the ADM classes, occurring on the same timeline as before, approximately 6 weeks
before the tournament.
In addition to the above change, the warrior classes will be slightly altered.
The new tourney classes will be as follows:

DM Tourney Classes ADM Tourney Classes
              ======================              ======================
                  0 FE: Rookies Freshmen
                1-4 FE: Apprentices ADM
               5-10 FE: Initiates Eligibles
              11-20 FE: Adepts ---induction---
              21-30 FE: Champions Contenders
                31+ FE: Challengers Primus

All regular DM tourney classes will remain solely FE based. All ADM classes will
now be based on warrior characteristics (i.e., the ADM split algorithm), including the
Freshmen class.
The Gateway and Primus arenas will be merging before the FTF to form one top
arena. These warriors will be split into two tournament classes, the Contenders and
the Primus classes, again based upon their characteristics. More information on this
will be published in the newsletters for those arenas.
If you have any questions about the above changes, please contact Customer
Service. Good luck in your games.
