While working feverishly on getting the Turn 3 Slaughterhouse Report ready to send in, the mail arrived with Stormcrowe Turn 210--indicating that I had somehow lost a week in my reckoning. Sorry. First time I've missed a Stormcrowe deadline in years--and I don't intend to let it happen again. Anyway, Mikes Morgue not only retakes the lead, but appears to be running away with things. Can he succeed or will rigor mortis set in? A lot of teams are still in the hunt and I look forward to a lot of excitement in the weeks to come--even if my own team needs a Hubbell Telescope to catch sight of the leaders. Good luck all! It wasn't something he'd expected, which made it even better. Cadal explained to the people-- several times--that the hunter had not been destroyed, only driven off, and that the road was still dangerous after dark, but the Korgans didn't seem to care. They fussed over Fist, cheered when he assured them that Aghtamar, herself a Korgan, had been invaluable in the effort, and generally made a party out of the whole situation. Later that evening, when all the gladiators were so full of food they could barely move (or didn't want to, at least), Fist drew Cadal aside. "These people act like all their troubles are over!" he worried. "The hunter will still be out there, maybe not right away, but he'll be back." "I know that," Cadal said, "and you know that, and more of the Korgans realize it than you might think. But there isn't anything else we can do about it without help." He smiled faintly. "Even the kind of help you had is not exactly what we need here. It was enough for that night, but it was...." He frowned, groping for the right words, then shrugged. "There was power enough, you understand, and the will to help, but it wasn't really the best tool for the job." "What is the best tool, then? If there is one at all." "I think there is a tool," Cadal said, "and I think the man who knows about it is Lord Malcorn. So in the morning we head for Malcorn, and we ask." Zukal: Ghenis watched the ship _Relentless_ ease out into the channel and brushed his hands together. It was bound for Niatoli to further certain interests of the dark cult. On it was Veleks, and Cousin Og, who would look after the small thief...one way or another. Which freed him to attend to other matters. First of those other matters was a meeting with Pelishtekan, the Ferencian who was currently the 'chief priest' of the cult. Ghenis scowled to hide his grimace of disgust. He didn't like the Ferencian. In fact, he loathed the man. But it wasn't necessary to like him, not really. As long as Pelishtekan did his job, nothing else counted. And right now, the man's job was to explain what manner of creature, monster, or whatever was hunting over the lands just north of Zukal. And how the damned thing could be fought and destroyed. It was in the way of certain plans that he had made for the benefit of the dark cult...and of himself, of course. The dark power did not expect his minions to work for nothing but the joy of it. Ghenis left the waterfront behind and wove his way through the twisted and noisome alleys of one of Zukal's poorest districts. The cult always had its centers among the homes of the poor. They were the ones who had something to gain from it, and nothing to lose, from shaking up the old order, after all. Ghenis smiled just a little. He liked shaking things up. The cult was headquartered in a tall narrow building squeezed between other tall narrow buildings. The cellar, which was dark and always damp and divided into tiny rooms no more than six feet square, was used for...storage. More or less. The ground floor, reached by going down half a dozen steps from street level, was the shrine itself. The level above that was where the main work of the cult was done, the plotting and planning, the gathering of information, the good stuff. Above that, two floors of small rooms where members of the cult lived if they couldn't do better for themselves. And on the top floor, the pigeons that carried messages from points as distant as Zuwayza and Murska in the north, Rocanis, Xochithlan, and even Tricorus in the south. Most people had no idea how far the cult reached. Which was another source of amusement to Ghenis. The authorities here in Zukal, the very heart of the cult, had no idea that it was anything more than a handful of dissatisfied commoners meeting to worship some petty godling. Ha! If Bey Sekahos knew how near he stood to the rim of disaster, how fast he was sliding down the slope into hell--! Even the Bandit Princes, who had a clearer understanding of their city, didn't know that the cult was gaining power daily and would soon be ready to make its move. IF the monster north of the city could be dealt with. Ghenis pushed open the door of the old house and stepped toward Pelishtekan's office, batting away the coil of incense that came up from the shrine below. The incense wasn't necessary, just window-dressing added to the cult worship by Pelishtekan. Ghenis didn't care for it. Damned frills! But it did seem to please the lesser members, and of course it added to their "harmless crackpot" image. The Ferencian was waiting for him in the cult's office, simmering with indignation. As soon as the door was shut, he demanded, "What do you think you're doing?" Ghenis raised an eyebrow and smiled faintly, clearing off the other chair and sitting down. "Doing? The cult's work, of course. What did you think I was doing, Pelish?" "In sending Og and Veleks to Niatoli without consulting me, you were--" "--Doing as we agreed was necessary. Niatoli can't be left out of our plans, and we HAD agreed that we should send someone to lay the ground there." "But--" "And it was necessary to get Veleks out of the city before his fear broke the nerve of other people. Cousin Og will keep an eye on him." "If the thief's nerve is broken--" "He'll be fine on Niatoli. The thing he fears doesn't seem to cross water readily." Ghenis leaned forward. "Put aside your annoyance and listen to me, Pelish. The thing Veleks fears--let me tell you about it." He launched into a description of what he had seen north of Zukal, and of what Veleks had been able to tell him. When Ghenis was through, the other man sat in silence for a long moment. Then he shook his head, seeming almost dazed. "I had believed Alastari free of such beings, unaccountable as that freedom had appeared. I supposed it was the Grey Witch's doing, that she had bound them long ago to keep them from interfering in her plans. Why would she loose them now?" "Who knows what the Witch would do? But you do know what this monster--these monsters--are?" "More or less," the Ferencian said, shrugging. "They're remnants of the races that inhabited Ghea before...whatever, the Old Gods or who knows what, started meddling. The ancient scrolls which I have seen in Ferencia speak of them as being the rulers of the world when humans were still little more than beasts living in caves and there were no elves or dwarves here at all." He shrugged again. "Unsupported myth, of course, but it does suggest that they are a very old race. Frankly, if I'd thought of them at all, I would have supposed them destroyed here in Alastari." "Destroyed in Alastari," Ghenis repeated. "That implies that in other places-- such as Ferencia--they are not destroyed, and perhaps not even bound?" "They're BOUND, of course!" Pelishtekan snapped, scandalized. "Er...more or less. Differently in different places, of course. But we couldn't leave them LOOSE." "I can see that," the gladiator agreed. "So, we have these things loose here, but they CAN be bound. Okay, fine. How do we do it?" The Ferencian blanched. "WE don't do it, that is work for great wizards, high priests, men of power--" "And no one in the cult has that amount of power?" Scowling, Ghenis came to his feet and leaned closer to the Ferencian, his hands braced on the desk between them. He gathered up a fist-full of Pelishtekan's tunic. "Are you telling me that the cult doesn't have that kind of power? That it's just a piddling little two-bit cult?" Pelishtekan paled further. "No! No, the cult has that power, but nobody HERE can wield it! And with the Arcanum so weak--" "The state of the Arcanum doesn't seem to be affecting the monsters," Ghenis interrupted in a hard voice. "Any dark god worth his worship should be able to take care of a few monsters, Ferencian. If I find that this is just a small time operation for a small time demon after all, there will be HELL to pay, man, and I will PERSONALLY see that you pay the first installment." >)]H[(< + -----:----- + >)] The Free Cities #74 [(< + -----:----- + >)]H[(< Malcorn: The Prince of Malcorn listened carefully as Fist of Kjarran and his companions described the monster on the road to Murska, what it had done up till now and how they had dealt with it. When Fist repeated Cadal's statement that the matter was not settled and could not be settled in simple combat, the prince sighed and nodded. "That's true," he admitted. "The dregur can be driven off with steel, but they can't be finally settled that way. It takes magic to bind and unbind them, because an essential part of their nature is magical." Stiffly, Aghtamar said, "We heard that it was you who set them loose originally--" "For what I considered good and sufficient reason, yes, I did," Malcorn agreed. "How many invaders did you encounter on the road here from Korga?" "Invaders?" The Korgan woman shook her head, puzzled. "None. I hear they're pulling out all along the coast, going back to their homelands, I suppose, and about time!" "About time," Malcorn agreed. "It was the dregur who finally convinced them of that. Not all dregur are criminals like the one you fought, probably no more than might be found in a similar group of humans. I made an agreement, which the responsible leaders of the dregur entered into fully and fairly. They will help us deal with the few among them who are criminal." "They'll...help?" Zilla asked faintly. "Wonderful. Just wonderful." "They said they'd clean up their own snakes." The gladiators turned to peer into the dark corner. The man sitting there, who had been so silent he hadn't been noticed, was plainly a Karnhorn. A Karnhorn of a familiar type--by his clothing, which was fashionable but not highly so, and very plainly made, a man of the lower ranks of the nobility, and impoverished, Aghtamar decided. Probably a minor bureaucrat. Which made his presence here, on terms of familiarity with the Prince of Malcorn, a puzzle. Not her puzzle to solve, she hoped. "I know they did, Tiljanz, and I believe they intend to do so," Malcorn replied. "But I don't see any harm in providing them with...witnesses to their fulfillment of the agreement." "To make sure they have no second thoughts?" Tiljanz asked. He sounded a little amused, but only a little. "No harm in that," he agreed. "I shall certainly go along to see that the terms of the agreement are met." "No offense intended," Fist said quickly, "but this will be a job for warriors. You don't look like--" "I am not a warrior," the young Karnhorn answered calmly. "And I take no offense at your warning, intended as it is to preserve my life. But life is not enough, there must be self-respect, as well." "Tiljanz al Burgos is as steady a man as you'll find," Malcorn cut in. "He won't run, and he won't get in your way. We'll take him with us." "With...us?" Aghtamar asked faintly. "Yes, I'm coming, too," the Prince of Malcorn answered. Fist of Kjarran had expected to leave immediately, or at least first thing the next morning. But two full days passed before Lord Malcorn and the Karnhorn bureaucrat were ready to go. Two days during which he considered going without them. But there were always several Shews, large, Lord Protector Shews, standing between him and the door when those thoughts came to him. And then when they did finally set out, Fist of Kjarran, Aghtamar, Zilla, Cadal, Malcorn, and Tiljanz al Burgos, Fist found himself wishing that some of those big, tough-looking Shews were coming, too. SPY REPORT Greetings, warriors of STORMCROWE! Once again I've been called out of retirement for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Hmmmph! I always thought MUTANT HAMMERZ was an over-rated team and they proved it with a 0-0-0! Ya gotta be quick on yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! DYNASTIC is now ranked 3rd with a 4-1-0 turn. SUPERIOR FORCES showed STORMCROWE what they were made of as they fought with a vengeance to walk off with 4-0-0. What's with 32ND PTOLEMAIC? She actually beat MOJO P@TROL's DAGORA SAVON, and walked away with 20 more points from the fight. Major screwup at MOJO P@TROL. DAGORA SAVON lost 18 points to 32ND PTOLEMAIC. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe DAGORA SAVON will provide more easy wins... MARILYN was reminded on the sands why BINGE N PURGE is Duelmaster. Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners. Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... How well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of practive, SUPERIOR FORCES! The bums at P.A.C. couldn't face the challenges from SUPERIOR FORCES! No excuse for that! How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior, DEATH FOG! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. BRITNEY S. of POP STARS knows how to pick 'em. She challenged CHUCKY MOHAWK II of MIKES MORGUE who is up by 25. Now was this a wise move? BRITNEY S. perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as she was overcame by CHUCKY MOHAWK II and ended up with 4 recognition points. I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights that ZEBRAS gets in. It fights people like POSTHUMOUS PETE, 8 points below. I thought ZEBRAS showed great skill and promise when it was subdued by POSTHUMOUS PETE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters to walk away, or not? Yeah, yeah, BENEVOLENCE killed JANE FAUST, who was "too young to die." Well, she was a fighter, and that's what you have to face. Is it my imagination, or are fighters getting younger every day? To die so young, so gloriously! Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. The end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and good luck. This means that my DM correspondence will be greatly limited and updating contests in DM 28 and DM 33 nearly non-existent for the next few months as my newsletters will be sent to Qatar and I will not be back there until February. I am living my real life dream as a Missionary/Pastor and I pray everyone in the DM world enjoys their Holidays and also have the opportunity to live their real life dreams as well. I will be deactivating my stables in DM 45 and DM 47 until further notice and just running in DM 28 and DM 33 mostly on warrior maintenance, unless I am able to get some duelsheets mailed from the Philippines. Keep the Home Fires Burning! -- Hammer Enter "Vendetta Inc" into the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse contest. -- Goat C.F.H. -- Are you here? -- Goat All -- Anyone willing to share warrior style; it is much needed. Will exchange with you. -- Goat V.C. -- How many of us are here? I brought 5 of the best with me. -- Goat All -- "Vendetta Inc" has the power of each of the following managers. "Master Darque" for leadership qualities. "C.F.H. for his communication and organizational skills. "ABRAXIS" his name says it all. "Fire Hawk" for his keen insight. "Goat" for pushing the enemy's buttons and paying for the magic to acquire a little of darkness from each of the above. -- Vendetta Inc Coach -- Welcome to Stormcrowe, but a couple observations. First, it sounds like 8 man football still required protective equipment to protect what sounds like rather delicate players. I would suggest for true grit, you recruit a few rugby players. Second, we take great pride in this being a family arena, and many of the locals like to bring the kids out to enjoy the games. Facts such as paragraph four of your spotlight which states most players go both ways should be kept to the privacy of your locker room, out of range of the eyes and ears of the tabloid media. Thanks for listening to the concerns of the true fans of this game. -- Crip, mngr. of Avid Fans. Myth Ology -- The odds were in my favour. -- The Statistician Contest People -- I had 34 recognition at the start of this contest. -- Storm Serpent Simbul -- You beat me up and beat me up and smash my shell and don't teach me a single skill? You are a cold, cold woman. -- Acorns, P.A.C. Posthumous Pete -- I thought for a moment there that it was going to be a posthumous golden ace! You tackle hard! But luck carried the day for me. -- Golden Aces, P.A.C. It has been a long, long time since something like a goat got the best of me, but, Vendetta Inc, your billy goat butted me all over the football field and sacked me for a loss. Salute! -- Zebras, P.A.C. A great, great clash, Master Darque. I am not sure how. I pulled that one out as your offense was superb. -- Vikings, P.A.C. Lance B. -- That was my blitz! But if you sing "Tammy" or "Leader of the Pack" or "Soldier Boy" for me, I'll take it all back. -- Twigs, P.A.C. Well, shucks, I guess a 3-2 start for The P.A.C. ain't too bad. Not an undefeated season, but in this tough league, it may keep me my job for a while. -- Coach, P.A.C. Goat, et al -- What is the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse contest? -- Coach, P.A.C. Abraxis -- Pray tell, what Earthen state are you located in? -- Dagan LifeGiver All -- What is the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse contest? -- Dagan LifeGiver All -- I would like to introduce the POP STARS. We got off to a bad start (0-5-0), but that was only because I sent three warriors to the Dark Arena. Their replacements are better, although maybe only slightly. Be fair to us, as I am a newer manager still learning the ropes. And advice would be appreciated. -- Dagan LifeGiver Twigs -- My, you're a crafty fighter! Fair warning, I am going to have a friend introduce themself to you soon! -- Lance B. Bugbear -- YOU BIG BRUTE!! I want to try that again with you, and I bet this time, I do much better! -- Britney S. Uther -- Ah, you feel overshadowed by your son, perhaps, and it has weakened you? This must stop. Stand for yourself, let your son live his life but not yours. -- Snowfall, apprentice psychologist P.S. And besides, I have an edge at this season, you know. Dagora Savon -- What a beauty you are! Cruel, too, of course, but that's okay. Beauty is often cruel. -- Shard Binge N Purge -- Disgusting. -- Sunflash Usurious -- The interest on those two measly little skills is outrageous, you do realize that? -- Frostbite Abraxis -- If you try to carve my teeth, I'm going to cry. -- Walrus Abraxis -- I appreciate the efforts you're going to to get the results. It's only a couple of points either way, but a couple of points can make all the difference-- thanks! -- Jack Wolfspider To All -- I want to introduce you to our newest addition to the MOJO P@TROL Family, KOTHAS JAPFIN. He will be the fool Xavier, hopefully Kothas will be more exciting. That is all. -- Voo Doo Convulsive Hurl -- I hope I didn't make you hurt too much with the shock of being beat by a 5'2" girl. -- Zindella P.S. Do you need a napkin? Shard -- I guess the lights went out of you for this fight. At least you didn't give up. -- Dagora Hit & Myth -- U lucky Swamp Dweller, the arenamaster stop the fight. -- Tearsa Chucky Mohawk II -- Yeow mon, that was a long and grueling battle. My friend, you are a good fighter. Would love try another dance; I might win. -- Nor'Elv To All -- Look who is here, the one, the only KOTHAS JAPFIN. What you haven't heard of me, well you will. Oh yeah you will. -- Kothas 13 November 2003 Let it be known far and wide, that the Warrior TUM 18-7380, the Champions Runner-Up for the recent Tournament, is managed by none other than Shocking Toad. I named this fabulous warrior after my friend and mentor, TUM, a.k.a. Don! Sorry TUM didn't get me my first TC; however, a runner-up with all those sandbaggers is pretty impressive, if I do say so myself. -- Shocking Toad, The Manager 13 November 2003 All -- This is to announce that I am no longer a member of the Vendetta Cartel Alliance. I have enjoyed my time there, and I've made some great friends. Their company will be missed, but they will endure. I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid- February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36 LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS BEDWYR was devastated by SNOWFALL in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge Title fight.
