Korranjal was reluctant to go out to face the storm and the monsters again, but
not so reluctant that he stayed behind. At least he had armor on, and some training.
Many of the dock workers that were rushing out had neither. He had lost track of
Shagrath in the upheaval of the crowd, but knew the assassin would be out there, too.
The dwarf was no coward.
Green lightning burst against a shield of black force in the harbor as the
creature summoned by the Great Temple struck at the Black Ship again.
It was a shriek of fury coming from someone behind him. Korranjal stepped to
the side in case the infuriated shrieker charged forward with blind rage and a sword.
Then he looked back, though there was little chance of seeing much in this rainy
night. Glowing red eyes. Korranjal flinched. That meant either a manager or a
cultist, and he didn't know which would be worse.
"Cursed fools that don't see beyond their blind obeisance to Kjarran," the voice
The Guard recognized it now, it was Mejandr, a cultist who sometimes fought as a
standby in the arena. "Kjarran is the greatest god, the most powerful--"
"And you're a fool, too, if you believe that!" The cultist gestured with a
blade that glowed red along its cutting edge. "Kjarran is one god among many who are
his equals, and some who surpass his power by many degrees." He was trotting forward
toward the monsters as he spoke. "Yes, yes, I know this is not authorized belief!
Spare me your childish fears! The priests know the truth."
"If that is truth," Korranjal said, keeping pace with the cultist, "then why
don't they say so? You don't expect me to believe the priests would LIE, do you?"
"They would lie in a heartbeat," Mejandr said, hacking at some unidentified
obstacle in the darkness, "if that lie would increase their own power and authority!"
"And they'll kill you for saying so," another voice snarled. It was Terregolis,
the Dangerous Criminal from the arena. The Commission called him a dwarf, because he
had a beard, but Korranjal suspected him of being Shewish. Who ever heard of a dwarf
over six feet tall?
"Only if they can catch me," Mejandr said. He sounded breathless--he'd been
hacking steadily for the last minute or two--but smug. "We of the Nameless Cult make
no extravagant claims for our god, but He protects us just the same."
Korranjal expected Terregolis to make some sarcastic remark to that, it was
known that nothing was sacred to the Dangerous Criminal (that's what made him so
dangerous), but he got his own comment in first. "Why do you call them fools, here
and now, Mejandr?"
The crimson-edged sword gestured widely, then hacked into another monster. "If
the priests had let well enough alone, we would have lost the ship in the harbor and
no more. But the summoning of the Temple provided the precedent and opened the door
to the summoning of monsters from the Black Ship. As they should have known!"
Korranjal faltered in his progress as he grappled with that concept. "Are you
saying...the Black Ship couldn't have brought or released its own monsters, if the
Temple hadn't brought in a monster first?"
"Yep." They had reached the water's edge by now, and the cobbles were slippery
with blood and ichor from the battle that was still taking place. The cultist paused
to brace himself against a bollard. "The first monster's always the hardest, but it
opens the road for others, even others from different, ah, planes or monstrous
realms." The glowing red eyes turned toward him. "This is basic stuff, Lej. Anyone
who gets past his novitiate in the Temple should know it."
Another, more violent explosion illuminated the night. Korranjal looked around,
appalled. The waterfront was piled with bodies and pieces of bodies, human and
monster, dead and not quite dead, like ghastly storm wrack. There were more monsters
in the water, bobbing around uncertainly. And the Black Ship, locked against the
dying courier vessel, with arcane fire playing around both of them. And beyond them
the magic had ripped the clouds aside, displaying a sky full of stars, and two moons.

Dothalne the Beggar frowned up at the Guard. "Do demons have livers? That
seems so...ordinary. Livers. And what kind of steel? One hears things on the
streets, too, and people usually say COLD steel. What if it's a hot day? And what
Morgron thumped the beggar's head again. "You want to take down a demon," he
said severely, "you got to have FAITH. In your tools and your targets and yourself.
No what-ifs."
"But I just want the facts!"
"What good will that do? People tell you stuff they say is a fact, and what
they mean is, THEY think it's PROBABLY true." The guardsman shook his head. "Forget
what 'they say', Doth. Go with what YOU say. What you know or what you guess. Like
the old saying: 'Your guess is as good as mine'. Well, it IS, you know!"
After a moment, the beggar said, "I think that's heresy. Or maybe lese majesty.
Something like that, anyway. Where would we all be if people went around saying they
were just as good as anybody else?"
"We'd be in a good place," Morgron said firmly.
"I don't know, there are aspects to this you're missing. For instance, if you
and I are as good as anyone else on this island, why, there's no reason but cowardice
or treason for us not to do what we can to stop the Black Ship. Go to Vithicar and
dig them out, or fight demons right here on the bay, or whatever it takes. That's
the whole IDEA behind having, well, nobles and stuff. So THEY can do the dangerous
It was the Ambitious Guard's turn to be silent for a long moment. Finally he
said, "I think you've got something wrong in there, Doth, but I can't put my finger
on it right now."

                                      SPY REPORT

Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in STORMCROWE this turn, and let's
start with a look at some of the teams. AMOEBA stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-0
into a 3 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 3rd place. Good work,
guys! And let's see, FROSTFLARE fought PYROTECHNICS and gained 29 points and
contributed to NORTHERN LIGHTS' 2-3-0. PYROTECHNICS has lost to FROSTFLARE, falling
16 points, while helping make SUPERIOR FORCES a 2-1-0 turn. This turn ALICE OSBORNE
Dark Arena Challenged SPYMASTER in what was STORMCROWE's Title bout. The crowds were
amazed this turn, as SPYMASTER killed the Duelmaster, ALICE OSBORNE, leaving
MORDRED'S MADMEN in mourning. This incredible death has allowed, I might add, HOT
LIPS from DARQUE FORCES to ascend to the throne of Duelmaster, and I hear DARK ARENA
is not happy. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their
losing fighters do dishes at The Shadow's Fountain until they win. Maybe?
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. MORDRED'S MADMEN has cause to stand tall, as they were
STORMCROWE's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And
guess who avoided MORDRED'S MADMEN stable the most? Believe it or not, it was
AMOEBA. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that MOTHER from DARQUE
FORCES was STORMCROWE's most challenged warrior this turn.
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? Congratulations go out to AVID FANS, with A TALENT SCOUT revenging a
bloodfeud against MOTHER of DARQUE FORCES. We'd like to remind certain teams not to
rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude.
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. Always good to rest in STORMCROWE, but never good to wear out my welcome.
Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in STORMCROWE again, farewell--
Alarond the Scribe

The Beer Vendor -- They usually are, but things get topsy-turvy when you throw
alcohol into the mix. -- Mother

Death Fog -- I meant to comment last month, but I forgot. Anyway, I haven't been
avoiding you much. MD looked it up, he's only given us orders four times this year
and it looks like Mordred's Madmen were challenging me pretty consistently. If you
can teach me Riposte or Defense skills to meet graduation requirements, I'll gladly
fight you. -- Hot Lips

Hmmm, okra (deep fried and seasoned). -- MD

I don't know about that. Anything that has to be deep fried to be edible might
as well NOT be edible. But that's just me. -- Ed., not a fan of deep-fried

Frostbite -- A good give n' take contest. One of those "check" fights, like in I
gotta check that strat n' those weapons. -- Bertha

Walrus -- Nice mustache. -- Zoey

Icelina -- A worthy battle from two who were worthy. C'eptin the wrong party won.
But I'll take the experience. (And man can you dish it out!) -- Aunty Macassar

The Statistician -- That seems an odd avocation for an orc. Are you any good at it?
-- Shard

Francine Kruger -- You're enough to turn a guy off women. Secret hint: The rolling
eyes and foaming at the mouth don't attract guys. And the blood dripping down your
chin? Don't do it. We're not STUPID, you know. -- Frostflare

Zoey -- You sure know how to show an old man a hard time, girl. -- Walrus

Aunty Macassar -- (disdainful look) But *I* don't use greasy kid stuff, so you have
no way to get ME. -- Icelinia

A Talent Scout -- Well, yes, actually I do. How did you know? -- Icelinia

The Janitor -- (wounded look) I had to do SOMETHING. -- Walrus

Ed. -- (nodding) Okay, I grant you okra. I try not to think about it, you know, and
it slipped my mind. -- Walrus
P.S. Of course, there's rutabagas.
P.P.S. And kale. Awful stuff, kale. Too much sulfur.

If only kale weren't so darned healthy. It's got that whole dark green veggie
thing going in spades. Bleah. -- Ed.

Lady, er, Lord Protector Alice Osborne -- It says here that you ARE a male, which I
find disturbing in conjunction with your female name and mode of dress. It isn't
that I'm biased-- Well, yes, maybe it IS that I'm biased. Sue me. Which is, of
course, beside the point. It says here that the Gladiatorial Commission offers you
"lands." Fine. Let them give you lands. There is no land here on the island
belonging to the Gladiatorial Commission; even the arena is rented. Take it up with
the Grey Witch when you get to the Isle. -- Arenamaster Nhor

Lady Protector Mother -- Gladiating, and killing for that matter, hardly seems an
appropriate career for a mother. Why do you do it? Is it because of the darqueness
in your soul? Well, that is merely personal curiosity and neither here nor there.
Until you answer, and then we're somewhere, but it isn't why I'm here today. I'm
here today because it's my job to be here, of course. You didn't think I came out in
this cold rain for FUN, did you? In the immortal words of Debby Tonte, As if! No,
I'm here to tell you that there are no lands on the island of Stormcrowe which have
your name on them. Unless, of course, you want to BUY something. There are probably
people who would sell, if you offered enough. -- Arenamaster Nhor
P.S. Can you cook? You might lure some old widower into marriage and then inherit
his lands.

                             HAMMER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

Be it known from the highest mountains to the darkest alleys of Alastari that
the veteran manager known far and wide as Hammer has now officially retired from
sponsoring contests as of September 15, 2005.
What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common
DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of
selected arenas has become a far from fun experience.
In other words Hammer has had it!
The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to
effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship
interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from
his planned sponsorship of any future contests.
There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up
to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun
experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors.
Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the
Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the
time, effort and money spent over the past several years.
May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those
who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today.
Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history.

five years. Hope to see you all on the sands, and may your weapons strike true and
your shields protect you (except, of course, against MY warriors *grin*)!! -- Lord
