From the Broken Bone tavern came more than just that. The music of a lute and the voice of it's owner struggling to be heard over the din of mugs and plates, raucous laughter and shouting, and the occasional ring of steel all drifted out to the man known to most only as Nomad as he approached the establishment. Just before reaching the scarred double doors, he deftly stepped out of the way as they suddenly burst open from within and a body hurtled out to crash into the street. A muscled, brutish man appeared, tossed a dagger after him, and yelled "I told you before, Yarl, no knife fightin' on Tuesdays, now take your drunk ass home!" He scowled after the man as the drunkard picked himself up and weaved down the street, cursing, then seemed to notice the shadowed, hooded figure standing quietly to the side. "Ah, Nomad, good to see you! Come on in, the Old Man's been waitin' for you!" "My thanks, Vulge," replied the manager coolly. "I didn't know you had bouncer duties on Tuesday night." The other snorted and laughed, "Neither did I!" The gladiator led the way in and through the crowded, noisy main room of the tavern and up several steps to a sort of side balcony overlooking the entire place where there were only a few tables. Right now, only one of them was occupied. A rather gritty looking older gentleman sat eating a plate of steaming food, a large mug of ale keeping him company as his pale blue eyes constantly swept the room with a shrewd, calculating stare. He was dressed in battered robes that might once have been white, and a gnarled, nasty looking walking staff was propped against the wall just behind him. Grease from the capon he was consuming ran into his scruffy grey beard as he gestured with it for Nomad to take a seat. "Good to see you again, my friend!" said the old man in a gruff but not unfriendly voice, then motioned for a serving girl to come over. "And you as well, Stik," replied Nomad as he sat, pulled back his hood and murmured "the usual, please, Lucinda" to the buxom waitress before she grinned and sauntered off. The fire light reflected off Nomad's brown hair and beard, giving it a reddish tinge. Most would be hard put to guess his age, for he appeared neither young nor very old, and his green eyes gave away little as he arranged his battered traveling clothes to get comfortable. Like Stik, he appeared unarmed, but many in Sunset, Bonsur, and Shadowspire where he kept guildhouses knew that to be a painful assumption to make. "I trust matters have been fine here in my absence?" "Yes, yes," Stik gestured somewhat irritably with his mug before taking a long draught. "Bloody boring, actually, half the guildhouses in town have gone silent. Many of the veteran managers' attentions are elsewhere at the moment, it seems..." Nomad shrugged and a small smile crept onto his face. "You could join me in Shadowspire, you know. Plenty of action, I keep telling you." "So you do!" blustered Stik, looking mildly irritated. "Problem is, I haven't got time nor gold to spare anymore to go traipsing all over Alastari the way you like to! And I like my islands, be it here or Greywand's!" Nomad's grin widened a bit as Lucinda set down a mug of what appeared to be hot mulled wine in front of him. "Well then, I've got just the proposition for you. Ever hear of another island? One named Stormcrowe? It's a slow arena, Karnhorn. Contest called the Slaughterhouse starting up there soon...good prizes, good competition..." Stik paused in mid bite, then mulled it over a bit moodily while Nomad sipped his drink and looked around the tavern to see if any his gladiators were here tonight. "Slow arena, eh? Free Blades area? Last contest I was in was a slow arena, too, also had something to do with 'Slaughter,' matter of fact. Great fun, it was..." Nomad said nothing, the small smile still playing at the corners of his mouth. He was content to let his friend and ally digest his meal and the information. Finally Stik pushed his empty plate away, looked around and picked up his ancient looking staff. "Well," he said with a bit of a grin, "we'd better get going if we're going to find you some recruits. I've got a team of my own in mind that needs some action!" Nomad nodded and smiled as they made their way out of the Broken Bone and into the chill island night. From the frozen windswept north (Dakota!) come Nomad and Stik, with teams Phantom Regiment and Old Man River, ready to cross blades with all in the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse! The solitude of peace was a welcome respite from the pressures and demands of the day, nourishment to the body and the quenching of the thirst on the evening of the Holy Fast brought the welcome sense of self worth and balance from the troubles and turmoils surrounding and pervading the atmosphere of the city. Tranquility of soul and clarity of mind and purpose were achieved and maintained with delicate and precise implementation. The mood of the warrior and the whim of the peacemaker each sought the prevailing focus with each passing hour and the divisions of time within. Solitude gave way to the presence of a Winged Messenger who delivered the anonymous message that was written on a torn scrap of parchment. Hammer furrowed his brow and set his jaw with an inward snarl as he studied the contents of the anonymous message. What had been suspected was now set in motion. The veteran manager sipped his Elven Ginger Tonic before piling a few pieces of silver (that had been discarded from his more valuable bag of gold) next to his plate. Then thoughtfully fingering his selected Elven Orb of Transport as he formulated an acceptable course of action, Hammer disappeared in a brilliant kaleidoscope of colors along the corridors of the Space/Time/Dimensional Streams of Reality/Alternate Reality in quest of the one kindred soul who would likely Answer the Call to Cross Blades with a Capricious Collection of Adventurers and Glory Hunters unlike any assembled in the history of the StormCrowe Arena Sands! [TIME JUMP] Hidden away in a Revolutionary Rectory in a self imposed exile from earlier days in StormCrowe Arena, an almost forgotten (by the StormCrowe Citizenry that is) figure huddled over a table laden with charts and graphs filled with an exhaustive and seemingly limitless supply of equations for tracking and dissecting the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of arena gladiators of the past and present woven together and interspersed with the intermingling of spells and incantations to create a metamorphosis of warriors for the future! So absorbed in his work to crack the code for enhancing even the most Dark Arena accredited gladiatorial candidate on the sands was the mad genius who had spent countless hours working his mind to a frazzle and his fingers to the bone to become a legend in his own mind and one of the most formidable tacticians when he really set himself to submitting to the blood lust raging within his managerial soul [pause for a deep breath of air!] the Knight of Kinetic Knowledge aka Baphomet the Blade (and assorted other titles accumulated from across Alastari over the time worn years) barely flinched as the brilliant kaleidoscope of colors burst within his Concentration Chambers to deposit his trusted friend and ally Hammer, who matter-of - factly stepped forth unceremoniously from the channel that flowed to the veteran manager's sought after destination in the Sanctum Sanctorum far from StormCrowe Arena and the unpleasant memories wandering the corridors of megalomania mindstreams. Betrayal and Vengeance and Vindication were about to come full circle as Baphomet had already alerted his scattered array of friends and acquaintances that stables would soon be active in Arenas 45, 47, 54 and 59 [which is why Hammer needed to alert his old friend regarding the aforementioned message on the torn parchment paper!] Baphomet beckoned to Hammer to peruse his latest charts and graphs while a fresh brewed pot of Elven Tea was summarily brought forth as the two friends shared their recent experiences while examining and re-examining Baphomet's latest surmisings and charted conclusions. [TIME JUMP] "They've run Jorja out of StormCrowe!" Baphomet spat his indignation at the news Hammer bore from the procured parchment. Hammer had related how Uncle Wolf had not been treated with such contempt when the veteran manager had co-hosted Maximillian's Morya Madness for 28 cycles in Arena 28 many years ago. "That's about the size of it my friend," Hammer stated with equal disdain. "Some of the newcomers petitioned Darque to request Jorja remove her stable so their contest stables would not run the risk of fighting her warriors and thus miss out on valuable contest points because Darque decreed wins and kills against Jorja's stable ..... or any other non-contest stables for that matter ..... would not be credited towards the overall contest standings!" Baphomet stared into his brew with a sullen frown of disdain at the news. "There has even been talk of having my stable removed because I have not declared a partner for the SlaughterHouse 3 festivities! Some do not like the idea of any Hammerz mercenaries running around the arena creating havoc among the ranks of those who are shuffling their stables to StormCrowe! They like the idea of beating and slaying my StormCrowe gladiators, but they are complaining about not receiving any contest points for their accomplishments!" Baphomet shook his head and scribbled some notes on a nearby notepad to infuse new ideas and inspiration into his manifold manuscripts to cross reference with the revelations of his countless menagerie of rosters serving as active and inactive examples of his graphs and charts. "StormCrowe won't be the same without Jorja!" spat Baphomet as he jotted another thought to examine and track with his StormCrowe stable. "Yeah!" agreed Hammer as he sipped his Elven Tea. "Jorja is like family and she always made sure each of her warriors addressed their previous cycle's opponents in the personal ads! Such disrespect for someone who kept the spirit of StormCrowe Arena alive with her wit and wisdom is intolerable!" Baphomet set his writing instrument aside and looked Hammer intently in the eyes as an unspoken question formed within him. "So they evicted Jorja's stable to prevent the SS3 contestants from wasting fights against a stable that was excluded from the point scoring format," fumed the mathematical wizard, "and you say there are rumblings about evicting your Mutant Hammerz stable if you refuse to declare for the contest [thoughtful pause] even though your stable is one of the few that has kept StormCrowe from becoming a complete gladiator ghost town? Then where in the schemes and dreams of those contest managers does that leave my stable that is currently en route to StormCrowe Arena even as we speak of such absurdities? A grim smile curled the corners of Hammer's mouth as Baphomet ranted and raved at the very thought of his early trials and tribulations in StormCrowe Arena in days gone by when certain managers had blamed him for their dark conspiracies and manipulative misfortunes; thoughts and remembrances that the news Hammer brought regarding the SS3 contest newcomers were stirring up from within the deep recesses of Baphomet's repressed memories! "Where Do You Think That Leaves Your Stable?" was Hammer's subtle reply. "May Your Blades Be Sharp and Your Wits Sharper!" Well, here we go... THE LION'S DEN like really fought hard to move up to 4th from 7th. Way to go! MVP award for JAGERMEISTER? SUDDEN FURY's proud of him after beating YUMALESCA and getting 16 points. Talk about yer big time losers! VORTEX got smashed by PANTHER, and lost 10 points! Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think RAGGEDY ANN should let BEAST HAMMER be Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos. I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just wing this stuff. The warriors of DARQUE FORCES must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't? Hhmph! What kind of warriors are MUTANT HAMMERZ? DARQUE FORCES, an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't get them to accept an invitation! Can SUDDEN FURY's VORTEX be more popular than me? She was challenged the most, but is that really the same? Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All STORMCROWE ever talks about is fighting! Me, I'm more laid back. Like, who is this guy??? WHITE WOLF gets sent to the Dark Arena, battles SHEWISH GIANT, and returns to tell of it!!! I bet ARCTIC WASTES manager is surprised! Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys can do? I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be a famous Spyreporter? I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop. Jorja Faithfully Wrote Five Personal Ads per Cycle and the Absence of Her Wit and Wisdom is a Tragedy! -- Hammer/Minister of War/Abattoir Scarlet Knight/StormCrowe SwashBuckler 20 September 2007 Ok, ok, you can stop not-talking about TOGS VI already, it is coming, slowly but surely, like a giant, over-fed, greased slug sliding down a gravely driveway. We're looking for new-comers, old-timers, in-betweeners, fence-sitters and Delarquans to come on out and participate. Just think, you could be the next Pinky & the Brain pairing (a la Creepster & Manager), or maybe you'll be the team that crushes all in its path on the way TO UTTER AND COMPLETE TOGS DOMINATION!!!!!! [note: insert sinister cackle if it helps you complete the picture] There will be a few minor changes, so let's recap the rules from top to bottom: 1. Each TOGS team consists of two managers. After the contest starts, there will be no switching partners whatsoever, so choose your teammate wisely. TOGS VI will last for 13 turns, so pick a partner you can stand for 6 months or so. 2. The TOGS entry fee is 2 team setups per manager. This means 4 setups per TOGS team. This entry fee is required before the start of the tourney with no exceptions being made. This is to ensure that nobody gets screwed if a team or manager decides to back out early. To pay the entry fee either: a) send $10 cash/check/money order/ or whatever to me personally at: Paul Jokelson 115 Moss Ave. #201 Oakland, CA 94611 b) get RSI to send me 2 team setup gift certificates. Sorry, no credit cards and no old teams you have lying around will be accepted. 3. TOGS point system: Fights: 10 points for winning on your up-challenge against another TOGS warrior. 7 points for winning on your even challenge of another TOGS warrior. 7 points for winning on another TOGS warriors challenge. 7 points for winning a random match-up against another TOGS warrior. 4 points for winning on your down-challenge of another TOGS warrior. 4 points for winning a random match-up against a non-TOGS warrior. Changes this TOGS: ** 10 points for any challenge by the DM, UP OR DOWN!! ** 4 points for winning a random match-up against your TOGS partner's warrior. To state the obvious, there are 0 points if you challenge your partner. ** 4 points for winning a bloodfeud attempt against you by a non-TOGS warrior You will not get any points if you challenge or get challenged by a non-TOGS team (with the exception of the above-stated rule if you get bloodfeuded), so use your avoids wisely if you think someone is out to get you. Spots/Ads 5 points for every spotlight written by any team member. 1 per manager per turn. The minimum length of a spotlight to receive points is 1/2 column in the newsletter (that's 31 lines-each line 85 characters across) and we will be completely firm on this. In addition to the length criteria, spotlights will not be given points if they are in any way plagiarized or if they are not Duelmasters or fantasy related. We will be the sole judge of this. If you're unsure if we will judge something to be Duelmasters or fantasy related, then e-mail me before you write the spotlight and ask. We reserve the right to take points away from a spotlight after they are given if we judge at later time that the spotlight has been plagiarized. -5 points per manager per turn every time a manager does not at least write one personal ad. 4. TOGS VI will start in arena 60 shortly after the Winter Face-to-Face (turn due Feb 21, Aradi turn 436) and as mentioned before will last for 13 turns. There will be multipliers in the later rounds, which means that all points accumulated by a team on turns 10 and 11 will be multiplied by 1.5 and all points accumulated by each team on turns 12 and 13 will be multiplied by 2. 5. Soultaker and Nuln will be the sole arbiters of any dispute that may arise, with props to Sentinel for doing the score-keeping as always. Whine all you like, we will be glad to provide comfortable chairs and the cheese of your choice. And there be the rules. If you look closely, you'll notice there were a few minor changes and additions made from the TOGS V rules. They are as follows: -- The Snotman & Nuln rule: Last TOGS Snotman and Nuln randomly matched up something like 4-5 times, so we basically decided out of pity to now give a small amount of points (4 in this case) for winning a random against a teammate, so that you're not completely screwed by having 2 of your 10 warriors get 0 zero points automatically. -- Scaling Down Points for the DM: Previously a TOGS DM would get 10 points *in addition* to whatever challenge points they got. This was to keep the DM from being penalized for being at the top and give people something to fight for. However, it was a bit too much of an award and we decided to scale it back and eliminate the bonus, but give full upchallenge credit whenever the DM challenges. -- Bloodfeuds from outside TOGS teams: This incident came up last TOGS, and it was felt that if a person killed a non-TOGS warrior in a random, they shouldn't have to be potentially locked into 4 turns of getting 0 points. So we've added an additional rule which now gives 4 points if you win when bloodfeuded by a non-TOGS warrior, at least giving you some way to get points if you're locked into a non-TOGS bloodfeud instead of being basically removed from the contest for 4 turns. And lastly... -- Team Names: This was not listed in the rules, but to make things more festive, at the suggestion of Manager we have decided to have the added dimension of team names! Yes, no more boring rankings with Team 4 edging out Team 7. Just picture reading a TOGS turn report now, with something along the lines of "Team Fiery Starfish obliterated Team Superior TOGSlings," just as one example. We hope to see you all there....
