Stormcrowe arena was bustling with activity. Workers had been busy about the
arena hours before dawn preparing the arena for the coming Slaughterhouse
competition. It was not the first Slaughterhouse, but it had been many years since
prior event. With permission from the Arenamaster, Master Darque had spared no
expense with money from his own coffers to have the arena renovated and decorated for
the event.
The work was extensive, and Master Darque had employed many to see the arena was
fit for a competition such as the Slaughterhouse. Laborers were hanging multi-
colored banners and streamers from the entrance rafters and along the arena walls.
Sweepers went through the fan seating followed closely by workers with mops.
Carpenters removed rotted wood in sections of the arena that were in desperate need
of repair and replaced it with expensive milled lumber the southlands. Teamsters
lead their oxen into the arena toting large wagons of white sand, imported from an
unknown land. It was a busy day in Stormcrowe.
Outside the arena was no less hectic as vendors were setting up their booths to
peddle their wares to fight fans. Entertainers shouted and promoted their shows to
the press of fans that had surrounded the arena. Excitement and anticipation was
high among the people of Stormcrowe as they awaited the opening ceremony. The arena
had been closed to the public after the final fight of the last cycle and their
desire was running high for their games.
Two hulking figures pressed through the throng of the crowd and made their way
to the Stormcrowe arena. The fans and vendors were so caught up in the excitement of
the day's activities they paid no mind to the two men. Both were renowned
gladiatorial managers, but they got little more than hurried bumps and grunts from
those they met in the streets. They slipped into the arena through the servants'
entrance and quickly made their way to the managers' boxes on the upper level of the
arena.
They found the object of their search in the hallway of the arena's upper level.
Master Darque was consulting with Stormcrowe's arena steward and checking on the
continuing work. He noted the two visitors and nodded them toward the door of his
private box. He followed them into the room.
The viewing box was humble for one of Darque's wealth. Cedar chairs and tables
were scattered throughout the box and one chair, higher than the others to compensate
for Darque's small stature, was in the center of the box. The necromancer placed
privacy wards over his viewing boxes, making them safe places to meet and speak
discreetly. It was a frequent gathering place for all three across the land of
Alastari and its various arenas.
"This place is a madhouse," Maximillian said as the door closed behind Darque.
"It is much better today than yesterday," the half-demon commented. "But all is
on schedule and the opening fights for the Slaughterhouse will begin as scheduled."
"So why the contest?" Kat was never one for formality or delay. The Aruaki knew
the necromancer' s activities were never what they appeared to be on the surface.
His suspicions only grew as he and Maximillian traveled from North Fork and discussed
the upcoming Slaughterhouse.
Darque did not feign any surprise at the question; he was expecting it, just not
so soon and so bluntly. "It serves a dual purpose. Stormcrowe has long been a
center of my operations in Alastari to me and its success can only mean a more
productive tenure here for us."
"True, true. But we all know that is cover story for this event. You said it
served a dual purpose. We don't care what you tell the public, but it is very
important for you to tell us your schemes," Max interjected. Both he and Kat knew
the half-demon well and had stood with him through many trials, still Max knew Darque
could not be trusted. The barbarian also knew that even as Darque revealed his plans
to them it would be tangled web of truth, or rather truth from the half-demon's
distorted perspective.
"I'm searching for something or rather someone who has something that belongs to
me. Have either of you ever heard of the Portal of Ghosts?"
Kat and Max looked to one another and then to Darque. Of course both knew about
the Portal of Ghosts, or the Blasphemous Portal of Ghosts as it was known throughout
scholarly circles. Next to the Chaos Gates of Alastari, the Portal was one of the
most dangerous products of the High Magic Age. Legends, some say myths, state the
Portal of Ghosts was a link between this world and the realm of Ahringol and anyone
with access to the doorway could pass between life and death as easily as they strode
through a common door.
"You must be joking," Kat finally said. Max was still staring in disbelief at
the necromancer. "I know you have this fascination with the dead and all, but this
is simply too much. You've got to get out into the world a bit more. All those
musty tomes and withered pages have affected your brain."
Max finally shook off the surprise, "Kat is right little one. You are looking
to meddle with things you are incapable of controlling. It is one thing to anger the
Greywand as you do, but now you seek to disturb Ahringol. This will not end well."
"Ahringol, bah!" Darque waved off his comrades concerns. "You two have allowed
your minds to be shaped by myths and silly wives' tales. Call it a scholarly
interest in the portal if it will help you sleep better at night."
"So, you think someone is going to come to the Slaughterhouse with the portal?"
Kat was a bit confused at Darque's great scheme.
Darque reached into the fold of robes and produced a black leather bag. The bag
was covered in magical wards and symbols. Kat could only imagine what would happen
to some fool trying to open the bag without Darque's consent. He pulled four stone
wedges from the bag and placed them on a table beside his viewing chair. The stone
pieces were much larger than Kat assumed the bag could hold, but he should have
guessed the bag was magical. The wedges fit together snugly and almost formed a
complete circle, missing only a fifth wedge.
The stonework was immaculate with an intricate, though foreign patterns, forming
six circular borders around its edges with each circle growing smaller as it neared
the center of the stone. A master craftsman had surely fashioned the incomplete
circle Kat thought. He then noticed a few of the symbols, one an icon of Ahringol,
another from a primitive Aruaki deity of death, but the others were unfamiliar. An
incomplete skull sat in the middle of the circles, its right eye socket absent
because of the missing wedge.
"The portal is not geographical like the Chaos Gates," Darque explained. "You
merely need the key to open it. As you can see, I am near my goal."
"So how does this contest help you?" Max asked.
"I do not know. I proceed at the instruction of the Oracle," both managers knew
it pained the necromancer to admit his ignorance in the matter.
"Great!" Kat threw his arms up in disgust. "The last time you listened to the
Oracle we had to save your scrawny hide from the maw of a dragon in a gods-only-know
where dimension."
Darque's eyes flared with indignation at the statement and the smell of sulfur
was heavy in the room, a sign the half-demon was irate. He did not like being
reminded of his failures, most especially those that put him at the mercy of others
as the incident with the astral dragon, Murkbrood the Hidden. "You were paid well
enough for your services and if I recall we all reaped from the benefits of that
expedition. She may be dangerous, but she is never wrong!"
"All right, all right! You two settle down," Maximillian often had to serve as
mediator between the two managers and today would be no different. After a few
moments both calmed and the smell of sulfur was only faint. "How will you know who
or what you are looking for little one?" he finally asked.
Darque looked out over the arena, "I do not know. However, these things have a
way of revealing themselves on their own. We shall wait and see what the
Slaughterhouse uncovers for us."

As the heavy swamp wood door closed softly behind him, Kat dusted himself off.
Darque was always getting into something that would make him shake his head, and this
was no different. Nevertheless, he was not one to let even the slightest of
opportunities pass him by, and there was plenty of coin to be made in Stormcrowe. He
called off to a distant room, "are the odds in yet?" A light rustling of feet marked
acknowledgement from his islander servant. "Y-yes, Master. I did not hear you come
in". Kat looked at the scroll the elderly man presented and examined it closely.
Eleven teams thus far. It didn't surprise the Aruaki that Darque had somehow managed
twenty others to toss trained gladiators to the slaughter. "Are you sure these odds
are correct?" the big manager inquired. "Yes, Master. That is what the odds makers
laid at noon today." was the reply. Kat was dismayed to find his Lion's Den and
Darque's Forces laid at 3/2. Not much room for margin there. He was a little less
dismayed to see that his travelling companion, Maximillian and former alliance-mate
Hammer were set at 5/1. Hammer would be managing via avian from a land far away, but
Max was here and seemingly omnipresent. There would be many victories for them. He
looked at the other odds:

Kat made several notes, pulled a small pouch from his pack and handed them to the
islander. "Get these to the Karnhorn, and keep me informed of any changes." The man
did not hold his gaze. "What is it now?" The islander pointed towards the
courtyard, "The five gladiators are here, Master. They await you in the courtyard."
As the elderly servant headed towards the door, he looked at the scroll the Aruaki
had given him. "Master, are you sure--" his words were cut off by the crushing soft-
pads and claws that pressed his neck against the wall. A long moment passed until
Kat slowly shook his head and turned to face the man.
"Yes. I am."

SPY REPORT
Much has changed in STORMCROWE since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen
adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Phhbltt! Too much
drinking and too little dodging gave JGW PERISHABLE 1 a 2-3-0! I got a good laugh
out of it! Major screwup at SRETSAMLEUD II. DICE lost 9 points to T'KALA. Some new
strategies, perhaps? Maybe DICE will provide more easy wins... MUTANT HAMMERZ's
hatred of DARQUE FORCES surfaced again as BEAST HAMMER challenged STORMCROWE's top
dog. Try as he might, BEAST HAMMER wasn't good enough at persuading RAGGEDY ANN to
step down from the Duelmaster's throne... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects
to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... The most avoided team
was DARQUE FORCES. In my day, no team with a 265-194-14 would scare me off! What's
the problem, MUTANT HAMMERZ? What do people see in GLACIER? His 8-5-1? ARCTIC
WASTES ain't talkin', but he's got 53 points. BAMBI FAWNDEER of ROAD WARRIORS knows
how to pick 'em. She challenged VORTEX of SUDDEN FURY who is up by 19. Now was this
a wise move? BAMBI FAWNDEER perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as she defeated
VORTEX and ended up with 19 recognition points. I hate going to the effort of
writing about the kind of fights that BISHOP HAMMER gets in. He fights people like
GLACIER, 10 points below. I thought BISHOP HAMMER showed great skill and promise
when he was bested by GLACIER. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? And this week the Duelmaster--whoops! MUTANT HAMMERZ has one
week left to avenge CANNONBALL HAMMER's death by excessive hits on the part of THE
BRIDE of DARQUE FORCES. How long have I been here? I got people to see, places to
go...
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
