"Still nothing," the Aruaki whispered into a small silver mirror the size of his
palm. Instead of his reflection, Kat saw the child-like face of Master Darque. The
little half-demon looked worried, which was a rarely an emotion the wizard exhibited.
Actually, Kat never remembered seeing the wizard worried, only a steady dose of
egotistical contentment and uncontrollable rage tempered with the smell of sulfur.
"Nothing on my end either. He is not one to leave a trail when he does not want
to be found. However, Maximillian is not one to leave without a farewell. I fear
something has happened to him."
Kat considered Darque's words, "You are correct. I will put a few of my agents
onto the trail. Perhaps we are merely looking in the wrong places."
"I will do the same," Darque said as his image faded from the mirror.
Kat placed the magical mirror back into his tunic pocket and exited the
alleyway. He joined the crowd of people moving to the east portion of the city where
many of the gladiatorial training grounds and guild houses. As he walked farther
from the arena, the crowd began to thin as he strolled into the business district.
While the visiting fans and vendors would crowd the arena area, the local business
district was strategically located between the arena and guild houses.
Kat stopped at a fruit vendor, a kind woman by the name of Georgina. Grey
streaks ran delicately through her coal colored hair, yet her skin still retained its
youthful luster. Kat always enjoyed speaking with Georgina when he passed through
the area. She was a wealth of information, and Kat always conjured the image of a
clever fox when he spoke to her.
"Hello my darling!" Georgina exclaimed when she saw the lithe Aruaki. Her dark
skin glistened in the early morning sunlight. Kat believed her to be of Delarquan
decent, but she had never spoken of her heritage. "You have the look of worry about
you. What is the matter?"
"Just the everyday trials of management Georgina," he responded.
"Still no word from your friend? Do not worry darling, he will return, but only
when he is ready to found," Georgina winked at him and placed a ripe apple in his
hand.
"I'm sure you are correct as always," Kat returned the wink. As he spoke, the
hair on his neck began to rise with an anticipation of something unknown. Was he
being watched? He did not look around or show any sign of discomfort, but he knew
something was afoot.
Georgina reached to hug the Aruaki, which was not out of place for the elderly
woman. "You have an admirer, a secret one from the looks of it," she whispered to
him in their quick embrace.
A very clever fox, Kat thought to himself. He nodded to her and thanked her for
the apple as he turned to leave. "I will see you tomorrow."
He returned to the main thoroughfare of the city heading to gladiator district.
As he walked, he unbuttoned the top button of his tunic. It was a casual move that
none would suspect, but it spoke untold volumes to Kat's agents. The Aruaki had many
enemies and some had fat purses and long reaching hands. As such, Kat took his
personal safety very seriously. The unbuttoned collar told his agents he was being
followed. Two undone buttons would issue a kill order, but Kat first wanted to know
why he was being followed.
The Aruaki arrived at his destination. The Mutant Hammerz guild house was easy
to spot as any other Hammer affiliated guild house. Bright colors and a well-
maintained frontage garden were always indicators, as well as motivational signs
posted in the yard and on the door.
Meeting with Hammer served two purposes this early morning. Did Hammer have any
more information to share about the disappearance of Maximillian? And, what did he
know about the Blasphemous Portal of Ghosts, which was Darque's new mad quest.

Darque ended his conversation with Kat by throwing his magical mirror against
the stone wall of his study. Surprisingly it did not shatter into pieces, but only
thudded first against the wall and then to the floor. Leviticus could sense his mood
was foul, but he did not say a word as he picked up the mirror and returned it to its
normal resting place on a bookshelf.
"What is your wish?" the steward asked.
The wizard pondered the question for a moment and then said, "Contact Phantasm
and tell him Maximillian is now his number one priority. After you have done that,
dismiss the staff for the remainder of the day. You may also take the day off once
this is complete."
"And the gladiators?"
"Send the girls to the hot springs and then to the masseuse. They deserve a day
of rest I suppose," the half-demon answered.
Leviticus began another question but the distinct smell of sulfur in the air
assured him the best course was to follow Darque's directions and leave any concerns
he may have unspoken. He bowed to the wizard and left the study.
Darque waited for the servants and gladiators to leave his estate on the
outskirts of Stormcrowe before he retired to the underground laboratory. The
disappearance of Maximillian troubled the small sorcerer, but business must still
continue he thought. He magically sealed the entrance and descended the stone
stairs.
The underground portion of Darque's estate was constructed by magical means,
after the two story farmhouse had been remodeled at ground level. The wizard was not
keen on anyone other than himself knowing the location and lay out of his laboratory,
and authorities frowned upon killing workers after the work was complete. "Such
dreadful times we live in," he whispered to himself.
The laboratory was unimpressive in terms of furnishings. No recognizable
pattern could be seen in the wizard's activities. He was a student of all magic, and
not confined to one area of study. Darque often mused about the fragile nature of
human mind and its inability to grasp the multiple complexities of the Arcana. Human
wizards would often confine themselves to one school, yet Darque enjoyed the magical
benefits of his demonic heritage.
Conjuration came as naturally to him as breathing, as well as necromancy,
enchantment, and transmutation. He spent many of his formative early years upon
Alastari learning abjuration and invocation, the defensive and offensive areas of the
magical weave. Altercation was his next focus and the studies had been quite
beneficial teaching him how to travel great distances with but a word.
The only area of magic that eluded the half-demon was divination. Maybe the
gods in their lofty machinations decided demon-kind would be too dangerous which such
power or perhaps something more powerful than the gods--the Fates. Whatever the
reason, Darque was barred from the more powerful portions of the divination weave and
could do nothing more than sense magic, but all of his kind exercised that skill
innately.
"All problems have a solution," he mumbled. Darque could not tap the powerful
divination magic himself, but that did not stop him from utilizing someone who could.
"Oracle! Show yourself, I know you are here."
Mists began to swirl on the dusty floor, turning clockwise and rising like a
pillar to the stone ceiling. As quickly as the mist had risen, it began to condense
and take shape that of a young woman with no eyes. She had thick brown hair flowing
over her shoulders and reminded Darque of a restless ocean, ever throwing waves upon
a beach. Her light skin only accentuated her the color of her hair. Her ears were
prominent, but the wizard did not know if that were true or if he only focused upon
them because she had no eyes.
"You called?" the voice was melodic, but their was a touch of bitterness. "I
have told you that I see nothing concerning your missing friend."
"There are other matters at hand that do not involve Maximillian. Have you had
anymore visions concerning the portal?" Darque hissed.
"I have told you what I know demon. You cannot tempt the Fates, nor unlock the
secrets of the universe at only a word. I warn you to proceed with caution," her
voice was still song-like, but firm.
"You do the divining and I will do the planning witch," was Darque's only
response.
"Your companion meets with a key element in this event now as we speak. Beyond
this there is nothing." Oracle tilted her head to one side as if listening to an
unheard voice whisper a secret into her ear.
"What is it?" Darque knew there was now a new piece to the puzzle.
Oracle refocused her attention upon the half-demon. "You now have a task before
you. You are to seek a lost soul, one with whom you are familiar with in the city of
Stormcrowe. That is all I know little one." With her enigmatic message delivered,
Oracle's form became gaseous once more and she disappeared.
"A lost soul? That could be any of those gods forsaken people in Stormcrowe,"
Darque pondered the seer's words. "Lost soul. Lost soul," he repeated. His brow
furrowed in thought until one eye brow slowly raised itself signaling a revelation.
"That may be the answer," he mumbled and began climbing the stairs to exit his
laboratory.

Turn 3 was a big turn for many teams and there were some shifts in the
standings. Phat Phat and Haunt maintain their lead, but only by a small margin.
Tripwire and Kellumbo jumped high into the rankings to the number 2 position. Nomad
and Stik posted another solid turn with a 20 point gain followed by Mr. Mojo and JE
with 17. Condolences go out to Michael Eldritch and Lady Martilyo for their turn
score of 0. It is not a way to begin a contest, but do not be discouraged--some of
the best lessons are learned in failure, not success.
There have been no big controversies in this contest, and for that I am
thankful. I would like to thank each of the participants for taking part in the SS3
and for you helpfulness in the scoring and adherence to the rules. Good luck to all
in the coming turns!!!
I will give fair warning that Madame Darque and I are eagerly awaiting a new
roll up (our first) and he is due very soon. Best case scenario is that it will not
hinder my scoring of the contest or delay it, but do not fret, I have a contingency
plan in effect to insure the contest is scored properly and in a timely fashion.
Any questions or corrections can be directed to me as always and I will do my
best to investigate it and correct it if necessary. I do hope everyone is having an
enjoyable time (that is the point of this contest--well, that and a bit of chest
thumping).

Fourth Round SS3 Scribblings

Hammer paced the floor as the eerie moonlight filtered its way into the room
where the veteran manager was wrestling with some managerial decisions in the light
of the secret reports that had come to his attention.
Lady Martily had been subjected to an ironically amusing introduction to the way
things can be on the arena sands in StormCrowe Arena and especially when the forces
of competition are at their keenest during a StormCrowe SlaughterHouse!
If she thought the SS3 was a brutal experience then imagine how things would be
in the near future in the All Bashers Arena!
The Gladiatorial Commission still had not announced the location of this unique
arena, but word had spread rapidly that certain magistrates were already receiving
the paperwork to register their new stables in the All Bashers Arena!
Perhaps the drifting reverie towards the new arena was fueled by the absence of
an SS3 partner, but Hammer was quite content to continue financing his pathetic band
of misfits in an effort to get them graduated from StormCrowe Arena!
Something akin to the challenge of Salmon journeying up stream to reproduce
themselves in spite of the dangers of raccoons, bears and fishermen!
At least Darque's heavyweights had received their invitation to the Isle and
would no longer impede the progress of any Mutant Hammerz seeking to graduate!
But now there were other pressing matters to attend to!
Hammer continued pacing the floor as he formulated a plan of action to deal with
the circumstances and a suitable resolution to these matters!

Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport.
I doubt STORMCROWE will ever be the same. It seems the training can make the
difference, as OF WOLF & MAN 4 is pushed out of top team by OLD MAN RIVER, who came
from 4th with a 4-1-1 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there
are sorrows to drown for MISFIT TOYS K, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 6 into
22nd. RAPTOR stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-0 into a 8 space move up the
rankings. This brings them up to 11th place. Good work, guys! The DARQUE FORCES
guild has had a 5-0-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know
where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, YUFFIE fought SHADOWCAT HAMMER and
gained 17 points and contributed to DARQUE FORCES' 5-0-0. SHADOWCAT HAMMER has lost
to YUFFIE, falling 14 points, while helping make MUTANT HAMMERZ a 0-5-0 turn.
Defending hers title for another turn, RAGGEDY ANN kept STORMCROWE's warrior, VETERAN
MERCENARY, from claiming the throne. By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw
last night, cramped under the table at The Shadow's Fountain?
I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher
friend of mine assures me this is true. SUDDEN FURY has cause to stand tall, as they
were STORMCROWE's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat.
And avoiding SUDDEN FURY more than any other team we find PACIS EX NEX. STORMCROWE,
are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged warrior
this turn was THE DAMNED II's warrior SIR MARIUS. More fighters challenged him than
challenged the Duelmaster! I don't know about you, but THE BRIDE challenging down 64
points to MUTANT HAMMERZ's ANGEL HAMMER, is not really worthy of DARQUE FORCES.
We're not surprised to hear that THE BRIDE overcame ANGEL HAMMER, but I bet it would
be interesting to hear why DARQUE FORCES made such a challenge. REALITY from
SRETSAMLEUD II took a risk this turn by bravely challenging up 26 points in a
challenge against BEAST HAMMER. And crowds were on their feet when REALITY claimed a
victory from BEAST HAMMER, and now has 94 points for his efforts. Well now, what do
you expect when someone like PUMA from THE LION'S DEN challenges down 17 points to
fight SMACKY of SUDDEN FURY? Well, surprise, surprise, PUMA lost to SMACKY, and by
the way, PUMA now has a recognition score of 36.
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? THE LION'S DEN made what looks to be a tough decision this turn, as
they sent PANTHER, with a record of 4-7-1, to PANTHER death. Farewell, his. The
manager of KELLUMBO'S KIDS will not be pleased to learn that NAUGHTIA, a 2-0-0
fighter, has been killed at the hands of DDR SUPERNOVA's XEPHER. Congratulations go
out to THE LION'S DEN, with CHEETAH revenging a bloodfeud against SEBASTIAN HAMMER of
MUTANT HAMMERZ. The Shadow's Fountain declares a free round for PROWLER and all of
PHANTOM REGIMENT, for having revenged ERRATA's 121 for killing one of their comrades.
Kudos go out to REDLINE this turn, for revenging SHATTERPOINT's bloodfeud against
SRETSAMLEUD II's warrior SPY. Well done. A brave warrior does not carry a red
shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well.
