Phantasm's False Fireball
(Illusion/Phantasm; Divination)
Level 7 Wizard Spell
Range: Touch Components: V, S, M
Duration: 1 Day/level Casting Time: 10 turns
Area of Effect: 1 item Saving Throw: Special
With this spell, a small item, no more than 1 pound in weight, becomes the
focus of a delayed fireball. If not dispelled and at a time determined by the
caster, the item will explode causing 1d6 damage for each level of the caster up
to a total of 12d6. The strong evocation aura is 100% detectable by anyone
casting a Detect Magic spell.
The true spell is not activated until a Dispel Magic spell is cast upon the
object. When Dispel Magic is cast, the spell's true purpose is unveiled and the
object functions as a scrying tool. Any sounds within 20' of the object can be
heard by the caster for up to 24 hours after activation. The secondary spell
has a 15% chance of being detected plus or minus 3% the level difference of the
opposing casters (i.e., a 20th level wizard would have a 15% chance of detect
the secondary spell if the caster was also 20th level. He would only have a 12%
chance if the caster was 21st level).
The components for this spell are the item to be imbued, powdered pyrite,
and a small ceramic cone for listening once the scrying spell is activated. The
pyrite is sprinkled upon the object as the spell is cast.
JGW eyed the necromancer as he left the guild house. He only shook his
head at the audacity the half demon had shown barging unannounced into his
office. Darque had not stopped there, he even made demands of Wretch, JGW's
alliance mate and partner for the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse. Whatever his
purposes, JGW knew the necromancer could not be trusted. He picked up the gold
coin Darque had tossed to him. It was a common gold coin from Shadowspire, but
the little demon was known for trickery. He tossed it to Wretch.
Wretch caught the coin and inspected it himself. He did not see anything
physically altered about the coin, but Darque was a wizard, he knew to look
deeper. The detection spell took only a thought to activate and the brightness
of the aura on the coin was blinding. Darque was a powerful spellcaster, but
this trick was juvenile. Wretch, disappointed the half-demon would try
something so obvious, dispelled the evocation he sensed on the coin. He
inspected in one last time before tossing it back to JGW. He nodded to the
Delarquan to let him know that whatever enchantments had been upon the coin were
now gone.
JGW was about to put the coin into his pocket when a steady knock was heard
at his door. He looked to Wretch and shrugged his shoulders. The lich returned
to the shadows of the room. "Enter," he said as he wondered about the identity
of his new visitor and why so many people were interested in visiting this day.
He tossed the coin to his desk as Nomad entered the room.
"Greetings," the ranger said as he entered the office. He did not waste
any time with further pleasantries, but pulled a rolled papyrus from his belt.
He handed it to JGW, "I was curious if you and your associate may have
information about the pictured item?" Nomad scanned the room for any other
presence. He did not see anyone, but he could feel they were not alone.
JGW unrolled the papyrus to see a charcoal rubbing of a wedge. He did
recognize the wedge, a topic of interest for many over the past few months. He
had no personal interest in it, but he had heard of it from his partner Wretch.
"Personally, no, but he may be able to help you." JGW rolled the parchment and
returned it to Nomad. As he spoke, Wretch emerged from the shadows.
"What interest does one such as yourself have in such an item?" Wretch
asked. His voice was like dust. His dark and twisted frame almost hovered
above the floor.
Nomad hated being in the presence of the undead; however, he also knew that
if he wanted any information he would have to deal with the abomination before
him. "Call it a scholarly interest," the ranger replied. Wretch cackled and
shivers ran down Nomad's spine. The ranger was not aware that liches possessed
a sense of humor or even the ability to laugh.
"Another seeks this item. You would do well to protect it. Though I sense
you will do just that. Perhaps the task is too much for you?" Wretch
questioned, more to himself than to the others in the room with him.
"Perhaps or perhaps not," was Nomad's reply. "Are you willing to share any
information you may have about the item or should I seek it elsewhere?" Nomad
was not normally so direct, but the quicker he could leave the guild house the
better.
Wretch cackled again this time at the ranger's impatience. The lich could
sense Nomad's discomfort in speaking to him. The ranger valued nature, and the
lich was such an unnatural thing. He would share the story of the wedge with
Nomad, if for nothing more than to revel in the ranger's anguish at tolerating
his undeath.
"Older than the Graywand, and some say more powerful. Even more powerful
than the Chaos Gates themselves. This is the Portal of Ghosts. It is a door
way to the other reaches. The very embodiment of death. And it, like myself, a
very unnatural thing," the lich stressed his final thought. "One who holds the
portal holds the means to death, not only in this realm, but all realms. He
will be master of all things death, including the gods themselves."
Nomad tried to conceal his shock, but he could not. JGW even raised an
eyebrow at Wretch's description. Both knew the Portal of Ghosts was a powerful
artifact, but to control even the gods themselves. The idea was alarming.
"Four fragments he has," Wretch continued. "It benefits all if he does not
gain the final piece."
**********
Kat and Tripwire exited the warehouse. Kat was unsure of where they were
headed, but he would follow. There was too much at stake for him not to follow
the psionicist. It may be a trap, but it was chance the Aruaki felt was
necessary at this point.
Tripwire could sense the Aruaki was uncomfortable with him. Good he
thought to himself. The more on edge the better positioning he could take when
it came to negotiating a price for the wedge. The psionicist headed from the
docks towards the arena in Stormcrowe. His agents would be there. Never to
leave anything to chance, Tripwire reached out with his mind to his agents at
the arena.
"Status report," he said mentally.
"Sir, we have a problem. The courier was ambushed en route," his agent
responded.
"By who," Tripwire said out loud. Kat only eyed him suspiciously. "What
did he say? He is dead when I get to the arena!"
"Sorry sir, we don't know anything, and the courier is already dead. There
were signs of a fight. We also found a dead rogue nearby. From what I can
assess, there were three others. Two fled to the country side and one headed
towards Stormcrowe. If I had to make a guess, I would say the package has made
its way into the city, but with whom I cannot say."
Tripwire stopped walking. He was now visibly irate and turned to Kat, "We
have a problem. My courier was ambushed and killed. The wedge is missing."
The Aruaki shook his head in disbelief, "Who?" he finally asked.
"We don't know yet, but the wedge is in Stormcrowe." Tripwire paused for a
moment. He scanned the thousands of minds that were in the city of Stormcrowe.
It was a monumental task and he finally stopped. The echoes of so many minds
was too much and the sound was deafening. He would have to scan each mind
individually to gain any useful information, but such a task would take him
weeks, possibly months.
"We have to move fast. If the little demon gets his hands on stone, life
as we know it is over."
**********
"Awaken my servant. I have a task for you," the voice was booming. Liam's
eyes opened from his slumber. No one would dare awaken the Black Abbott of
Morya, but his visitor this day was not just anyone. Few could say they were
visited by a god.
"Yes, my lord," was Liam's response.
Ahringol, god of the dead, stood before the unholy warrior. The god of
death was a tall, dark man, if you would refer to a god in such terms. Wild
black hair danced on his head that only offset his pale skin. His neck,
eternally broken, rested on his right shoulder. His cold, dead eyes fixed upon
Liam. "In Stormcrowe, there is a powerful artifact that must be destroyed. It
is broken into five pieces. You do not have to destroy all of them, one will
suffice. Many seek it, but none may possess all of the pieces."
Liam bowed, "As you command my lord. Where in Stormcrowe shall I begin my
search?" he asked.
"One already possesses four and a fifth is near. You know the one of whom
I speak. You may even call him friend, but his demonic nature will be your
undoing if you do not this task," Ahringol's voiced trailed away as he
disappeared from sight.
The black guard knew immediately of whom his lord spoke. Darque was indeed
a friend; however, not even friendship could sever his commitment to his god.
Liam would not fail Ahringol.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Well I guess seeing as how I am DM for a second turn I should write something. Don't
really have much to say but I am proud to be DM in the middle of this contest. My
team isn't doing so well and my manager is a bit down but me getting the throne has
made up for a bit of his disappointment. Can't wait for my next fight to see if I
can hold the throne and get my invite. Remember death stalks this place and blood
shall be spilled to take my place.

SPY REPORT
Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in STORMCROWE this turn, and let's
start with a look at some of the teams. It seems the training can make the
difference, as DARQUE FORCES is pushed out of top team by OF WOLF & MAN 4, who came
from 13th with a 5-0-0 this turn. I understand that The Shadow's Fountain is buying
the drinks for OF WOLF & MAN 4 tonight, to honor their rise to 1st after this turns
5-0-0. Hmmm. The PHANTOM REGIMENT guild has had a 4-1-0 turn and deserves to be
watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's
see, PT CRUISER fought BEAST HAMMER and gained 20 points and contributed to ERRATA's
3-2-1. RHODE HOUSE has lost to DICE, falling 13 points, while helping make DARKSTORM
a 2-3-0 turn. MERCED challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting to
dethrone ARCTIC WASTES' warrior. Defending his title for another turn, TUNDRA kept
OLD MAN RIVER's warrior, MERCED, from claiming the throne. Tell me, is nothing
sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Shadow's Fountain uses
trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one. SUDDEN FURY has cause to stand tall, as
they were STORMCROWE's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to
beat. And guess who avoided SUDDEN FURY stable the most? Believe it or not, it was
ERRATA. Anyone surprised? The most challenged warrior this turn was DARQUE FORCES'
warrior PAYNE. More fighters challenged her than challenged the Duelmaster! Well
now, what do you expect when someone like PROWLER from PHANTOM REGIMENT challenges
down 23 points to fight PAYNE of DARQUE FORCES? I thought challenges were for
warriors, not cowards looking for easy wins. PROWLER subdued PAYNE, is nothing
sacred? I don't know about you, but JACOB MARLEY challenging down 20 points to
ERRATA's 121, is not really worthy of PHANTOM REGIMENT. We're not surprised to hear
that JACOB MARLEY bested 121, but I bet it would be interesting to hear why PHANTOM
REGIMENT made such a challenge. In a brave attempt, HERON from RAPTOR challenged up
18 points to fight HOLY VIRGIN BLOOD from the MIRACLE WORKSHOP stable. HERON perhaps
got hers just desserts, seeing as she was beat by HOLY VIRGIN BLOOD and ended up with
3 recognition points.
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. A farewell moment, if you please, WHITE WOLF of ARCTIC WASTES has been sent
to the Dark Arena, and was carried out on his shield. BEAST HAMMER has departed
STORMCROWE, leaving MUTANT HAMMERZ without their 13-19-0 warrior. Question, just
what was his team doing at the taverns last night? Congratulations go out to
DARKSTORM, with ARROW revenging a bloodfeud against STRIKIN U of ASAIRE. We'd like
to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you
are; and it's considered rude.
I like this place, STORMCROWE, the taverns have old wine, and young serving
girls. Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet
again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in
STORMCROWE again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

Reaper -- No AD?! Nothing to say at all after breaking our Bones? Well, Ichabod at
least had something to say about it! -- The Phantoms
Optimus -- A nice challenge to bring you back to the pack. Beware of fights future.
-- Jacob Marley
Payne -- It was perhaps not the most daring challenge, but your team is looking
dangerous. I'll take that one. -- Prowler
Scum III -- Well, it the name fits.... -- Grateful Dead
Knightbreed and Raynor -- Your unexpected appearance at least gave me a win. But go
away until we are done with the contest! -- Flying Dutchman
Reaper -- Not even worth a comment? How sad for my poor broken Bones. At least
Ichabod has given us something to talk about. -- Phantom Regiment
Optimus Prime -- See, your manager has made you a target by trying to win this
contest. I needed to bring you guys back down to earth. That fight accomplished at
least one part of that goal. -- Jacob Marley
Payne -- Really, I know it was a down-challenge, but such things happen in a contest.
I enjoyed the victory. -- Prowler
Raynor -- get out of here! You are not supposed to be here! At least I got the win.
-- Flying Dutchman
Yumalesca -- You might get away with this one, as we are not worthy of successfully
feuding, but we will try anyways. Enjoy the wins and skills. -- Hesperorrisns
P.S. I must try again... I know you'll like my little behind, but I got a new little
tweak...
Lasombra -- Good try on the feud! How about a rematch? I like skills, you like
skills, but most of all, we both like wins. -- Harpy
Rockslide Hammer -- You got some tough skin! I do great damage! -- Crane
Merry -- I didn't know hobbits exist?! Or is it Ho-bits? -- Skydrake
Hey, can we get an updated manager list? -- Owlin the Wise
Sorry, away from my files today. Remind me next time time though. -- The Saint,
keeper of lists
Owlin -- Well, can't say I'm at my best, but it's almost over. Get ready for the
next contest. Have fun with the new one. -- Liam the Goth
Master Darque -- Buddy Lee and I are still waiting to hear from you. If you sent an
answer, cool, if not, we'll move ahead with our plans for Turf Wars 6. See you there
when we get there. -- Liam
Frost Bite -- Ouch! -- Angel Dust
Lynx -- Well, thank you for the bloody nose. -- Lynn Thao
Devastator -- Wow, you can fight like a wild beast on roids!! -- Jaglavox
Zedd -- Well played. -- Who Tooted??
Redline -- Not sure why, but it was a good match. Hang in there. -- Sir Marius the
Black
Wither Faith -- The only faith I have is in death, and you almost confirmed that! --
China Syndrome
Madd Dwarf -- Sorry, but you had that one coming. -- T'kala
Cheesey -- Yeah, it was, but I forgot to milk the goat so I needed a little flavor.
-- Lorax
Sir Marius -- I miscalled that rhythm... -- Redline, the Unlucky
Brave New World -- I don't know about "brave," but it is quite brutal, y'see? -- Weak
Link
Master Darque -- Most gracious of hosts, and he who hath been graced of the infinite
infernals, I would be most honored to engage in an in-depth statistical analysis of
the Slaughterhouse's Complex (and ultimately bloody) results, to date. -- Michael
Eldritch, the flattered *wry grin*
P.S. Hope your vacation was splendid! See you at the TW!
Liam -- You should have my info now (diplo?) so please keep me posted on the TW.
Force of Will is doing fine, and I might have a ringer to replace my beloved Nyan'ti.
-- Michael
Depe Thought -- I'm class of '94-'95, so I guess I'm feeling younger than usual
tonight. *wry grin* I'm still a part-time DM/GM/storyteller (depending on the
system), but NO 4th edition for me. Pathfinder's a pretty darn cool setup, and it's
what I'm focused on now. Anyhow, great to see you back on the sands, and uh, are the
Adventurers friends of yours? -- Michael Eldritch, mgr. Shatterpoint, and Compulsive
Compiler of Matters Arcane
Darque -- Errors have been noted. *sigh* Nothing major. -- M.E.

*TURF WAR VI RULES*
Starting Nov 2008 (10 turns)
Anyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances created solely to compete in the Turf War! To participate, each alliance must:
1. Announce the alliance and the Captain of the alliance in the North Fork
(DM 47) newsletter.
2. Announcements made on the D2 Forums will not be accepted.
Captains are responsible for:
1. Verifying those who wish to participate under the banner of their
alliance;
2. Distribution of prizes should their alliance win the Turf War.
3. Submit one (1) RSI Roll-Up Certificate to participate
Participating managers who are not Captains must:
1. Submit one (1) RSI Roll-Up Certificate to participate
2. Announce their intent to compete with manager name, team name, and
alliance they will represent in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter.
Announcement made on the D2 Forums will not be accepted.
a. No scores will be tabulated until a Gift Certificate is received.
No EXCEPTIONS.
b. Before a manager can compete, he/she must declare themselves in
the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter as stated above AND be verified
by the alliance Captain they will represent.
c. Only one (1) team per player may compete. No multiple teams or
aliases will be allowed. Violations will result in immediate
disqualification from the Turf War (so be sure to take any
multiple teams OFF of Team Maintenance).
d. Scoring will NOT be retroactive for teams that do not properly
declare or fail to send a Gift Certificate by Turn 1. In other
words, if your Gift Certificate is not received until Turn 3 of
the Turf War, and you have fought on Turns 1 and 2, your scoring
will not begin until Turn 3. All conditions must be met before
scoring will begin--declaration, verification, and Gift
Certificate received.
e. No declarations or verifications will be accepted after Turn 5 of
the Turf War.
f. For purposes of scoring, the moderators will score the Turf War
and settle any and all disputes as they arise. Their decisions
will be final.
Scoring will be as follows for Fights:
Win Loss Kill Die
Challenge +2 -2 +5 -5
Match Up +1 -1 +1 -5
Bloodfeud +2 -5 +5 -10
Champion x2 x2 x2 x2
Dark Arena* +10 -5 xx xx
*After 2nd win, warrior scores no points for wins
Special Scoring Considerations for the Turf War are as follows:
Spy Report mention (team name only) +2
Style Master +2
Duelmaster +2
Champions:
1. A Champion may be declared, but one is not mandatory.
2. Only one Champion allowed per manager at any given time.
3. Champions that graduate or are killed by another warrior in the arena, but
not the Dark Arena, may be replaced.
4. Champions must be in the Adepts bracket or lower on the turn they are
declared, and may NOT have gone above Adepts level at any time; this
includes teams transferred into North Fork for the Turf War.
Bloodfeuds:
1. Bloodfeuds will score points on all four (4) turns.
2. There is no limit to which warrior may bloodfeud or how often.
Tournament Considerations:
1. Tournament participation is ALLOWED and encouraged.
2. Tournament Victors won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 25 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a
warrior(s) wins such status.
3. Tournament Champions won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 50 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a
warrior(s) win such status.
4. Points for TVs and TCs will be applied the Turn after RSI posts
tournament results in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter (i.e., if the
results post on North Fork turn 275, points will be credited on North
Fork turn 276 to the applicable teams).
Special Considerations:
1. Each alliance begins the Turf War with zero (0) points.
2. There will be NO alliance or team changes once the contest has begun. If
you begin the Turf War with Alliance A, you must end the Turf War with
Alliance A. If you begin the Turf War with Team A, you must end the Turf
War with Team A.
3. There will be a maximum of seven (7) teams allowed per alliance for the
Turf War.
4. The Dark Arena may be used on the first turn only, of every warrior,
without penalty.
Prizes:
The Turf War is a "winner take all" contest. All prizes and 100% of the Gift
Certificates will be awarded to the Captain of the winning alliance. It is the
responsibility of the Captain to distribute Gift Certificates. Moderators will
submit a list of each manager on the winning alliance to RSI at the completion of the
contest for the non-Certificate prizes.
The following prizes have been secured from RSI:
1. Renaming of the North Fork (DM 47) arena;
2. Renaming of Dark Arena Monsters (one for each manager in the winning
alliance);
3. Known Favorites for one warrior on each team of the winning alliance
(warrior must be ranked Initiate or above, must be alive, and must have
at least one arena fight to receive this award).
4. +1 Skill bonus potion for each manager on the winning alliance. Bonus
potion must be applied to a living warrior from (DM 47)
5. +1 Skill bonus potion (one) for each manager who fights in all 10 rounds
AND 45 fights of the Turf War. Bonus potion must be applied to a living
warrior from (DM 47)
These awards will be listed by the Moderator for claiming from RSI (Lee) within 4
turns of the end of TW VI.
Moderators:
The Moderators for this event will be Oz and Master Darque. They will arbitrate all
dealings during the course of the contest. Their decisions will be final. All
questions, comments, and scoring disputes may be directed to Land of Oz or Darque
Forces via diplo in DM 47. Managers with internet access may send a private message
to [The Consortium] or [Darque] on the Duel2 Forums. Lastly, you may also email
questions, comments, and scoring disputes to rebelnerfherder at yahoo dot com.
Please note there have been rule changes from the last Turf War. Please read them
carefully!
Contest will begin in November following the Fall Mail In Tournament.

Name-Change-O-Rama
The summer tourney brought a lot of people to the Isle who didn't appear there
normally. This included Commission employees. Half a dozen arenamasters regarded
each other warily in the mirror behind the bar at the Pig in a Haystack. The Pig was
obscure and mediocre, drawing few gladiators, which is what they had all been looking
for. They saw gladiators every day. Most arenamaster were convinced that this was
some kind of punishment.
You could always pick out the arenamasters in a crowd. There were superficial
differences: One of these had clearly Adantri features, one wore an eye-patch, two
were female. But there were, in significant ways, alike. The same size, the same
hair-trigger alertness, the same deadliness.
The one-eyed man broke the ice, raising his beer mug in salute. "I'm Zrof One-
Eye from Zukal. Sugar of Arvat--" One of the women bowed slightly. "I know Sugar.
The rest of you...?"
The Adantri matched his salute. "Dernal of Dayla Kiv."
"Daiyla Kiv? Ah...."
"No, without the 'I' in it. These damned bureaucrats can't spell, and they
thought adding an unnecessary vowel was exotic." Disgust dripped from his voice.
"Tell me about it!" another man growled in agreement. "Khagal of Niatoli, and
what they do to the spelling of THAT simple word--!"
"I thought Daiyla, I mean Dayla Kiv had a different name right now,"
Arenamistress Sugar said. "The arena, at least, because of a contest?"
"Chavez Ravine." Dernal's tone was the one that substituted in polite company
for spitting on the floor.
Zrof blinked, taken aback by the bitterness. He wouldn't have minded a contest
in Zukal, and damn what they called the place. "It's only temporary, though."
"Temporary, shmiperary," another man muttered. He seemed well into his drinking,
although, like all arenamasters, he carried his liquor well. "They do it all the time
in Aradi. No reshpect. Go around changing thish, changing that. I wish I could
change shome thingsh." He signalled the bartender for a refill.
The second woman put her hand over his mug. "You've had enough, Harkon. Try the
coffee, instead."
"You should be mad, too, Ripplesh," Harkon said. "They're going to do shtuff
like that in Jahnsh, aren't they?"
Ripples Dorrigan shrugged. All the men paused, some with glasses half raised, to
watch. "It's the way things are," she said. "Not much we can do about it."
"You know," Khagal of Niatoli said, "maybe we could make a few changes. Fix the
spelling of Arena 33, for one, change a few standby titles--"
"The Commission hates changes." Dernal of Dayla Kiv topped up his glass and
drained it gloomily.
"Yes, but if we disguise it," Sugar of Arvat said, excited, "make it... maybe a
general Name-Change-O-Rama! Then we could slip OUR changes through and no one would
notice or mind."
