TEAM SPOTLIGHT
A true-life story from The Internationals
....................................................
Senior Antics
It was the spring of 1963, and graduation was approaching for The 42 Seniors of
the Cannelton High Bulldogs. The weather was appealing to young lads, as it often was
in the Southern Indiana backwoods. As always, the game of choice was "How can we best
those dirty-rotten rascals from the nearby (4 miles away) hated town of Tell City."
Cannelton, named from the special cannel coal (bituminous) mined there, had settled
first many years before. Although small, (1800 fine folks) it was the County Seat and
the fount of all good. Tell City, a Swiss settlement, (Who else would name a city
after William Tell?) somewhat newer, and now larger (8000 despicable, arrogant,
pompous beings) was the economic and industrial center of Perry County. The two High
Schools, although only four miles apart did not at all consider themselves allies.
This fine spring day, maybe four weeks prior to graduation, several of the
Bulldog Seniors were making a trip along The Ohio River from Cannelton to Tell City.
After all, Tell City's wealth made it the place to go to Drag Main, stop at The
Frostop or Dog N Suds, or to check out the foxes. (There were more females in Tell
City, and some of them were quite nice.)
Between Tell City and Cannelton (Actually much closer to Cannelton) was a large
lake, which was part of the Unincorporated-between-Tell-City-and-Cannelton-area,
called Fennhaven. For many years, the old, dilapidated sign at the lake read
"Fennhaven Lake". The Seniors--Bill LeMaire (Frenchie), Tom Taylor (Tom), Wayne Smith
(Smitty), and Paul Minto (Minto)--noticed that a new sign had finally replaced the old
one. As they drove by, they read the sign on both sides. Exiting Cannelton, it read,
Tell City Fennhaven Lake. The opposite side read, Tell City Fennhaven Lake.
As one, they immediately all thought, "We're damn well going to have to do
something about this invasion!"
They talked it up around school the next day, and after accepting volunteers, an
action plan was established. The added participants, a few days later on Thursday
night, were Seniors Keane Heck (Keano) and Paul Hay (Hay), plus a Sophomore Harry Joe
Steinsberger (Steinberg). These Seniors were smart. It was always good to have a
Sophomore along in case things went bad, so blame could be appropriately placed.
The plan was simple. Bring any destruction tool you could find. Hay would pick
up everybody in his old innocuous Chevy. Smitty would be the last pick up, because in
his Dad's workshop were many tools and some paint for any participants without
weapons. Crammed into the Chevy, the seven (Who had heard of seat belts then?) joshing
and joking headed out of town towards Fennhaven Lake. Making sure no other cars were
around, Hay slowed to a stop, and the six scooted off to the side, over the hill, out
of sight with their implements of destruction. As they waited for total darkness, and
no cars in sight from either direction, they jumped into action. A few holes jammed
with screwdrivers, some bent edges with hammers and a wrench, and sloshes of different
colored paint on both sides, and the deed was done.
Moments later, they saw car lights coming and they heard the shave-anda-haircut
horn honk from Hay indicating "all clear" and they threw the paint cans into the woods
and hustled into the escape car. It was a loud and boisterous journey home.
Yes, indeed.
Of course, none knew what might come from such antics. One cannot expect a few
bold teenaged guys not to boast of the feat. And it was not as though other Cannelton
Bulldogs had not been alerted to the deed, as they had been given a chance to
volunteer for action. Some of The Seven were concerned as to the ramifications. Most
ignored the possibilities with teenaged-male-braggadocio.
After a week...nothing happened. The ugly sign was there for all to see.
Two weeks...nothing.
Three weeks, the sign came down.
Two days before graduation ceremonies, two things happened. The first happening
was: The Perry County News (Tuesday edition) was published, and the front page
headlines were: VANDALISM STRIKES IN PERRY COUNTY! Featured on the front page were
two photos. (black and white) One was of the damaged Tell City Fennhaven Lake sign.
The other was of a rural mailbox which was crushed, apparently having been hit with
something like a baseball bat. The article extorted these actions and offered $100
REWARD FOR KNOWLEDGE OF THIS VANDALISM. Oh, boy! The Seven were now concerned,
especially since none knew anything about the rural mailbox crushing scandal. The
second happening was: As they drove, returning to Cannelton from Tell City, reading
the Perry County News aloud in the car, they approached Fennhaven Lake. A very nice
brand new sign had been erected. As before, the Tell City side read "Tell City
Fennhaven Lake". Immediately their anger rose! As they passed the sign to read it
from the Cannelton side, lo and behold, the sign read "Cannelton Fennhaven Lake".
Cheers arose! Someone up above had gotten the message!
There was much "sign" talk a couple of days later after senior graduation
ceremonies. The Seniors involved felt vindicated, although they did wonder what would
happen if someone gave them up. ($100 was a LOT of money in 1963!) No one did.
A few years ago, at the 40-year reunion, this was a positive topic of discussion.
By now, times had changed. Cannelton had continued to wither as the town lost
population, the second smallest-high-school in Indiana graduated 27, and the County
Seat was moved (some say stolen) to Tell City. The lake sign was now back to the
original "Fennhaven Lake". Of the Seven involved, only two had remained in the Perry
County area. Such a small and unimportant thing, while theoretically and probably
morally wrong, was still, forty years later, a sense of pride for The Seniors.
Some afterthoughts to put things into perspective.... In 1963...
Vietnam troubles mount
Beatlemania begins
Zip Codes and Touch Tone Phones are invented
costs: Gas = 30 cents per gal; loaf of bread = 20 cents; movie theater = 25 cents
Smitty's favorite songs:
Hey Paula -- Paul and Paula
Blue Velvet -- Bobby Vinton
It's My Party -- Lesley Gore
Slang of the era:
"Bread" = money
"Blitzed" = drunk
"Pad" = house or home
"Fox" = an outstanding looking girl or woman
"Cool" = nice
"Scarf" = eat/gobble food very fast

**TURN 2 Scoring -- Morya Madness
+3 points to the highest-ranked warrior of each style. Highest ranked is the highest
recognition total, regardless of record. In the case of a tie in recognition
points, win/loss percentage will be the tiebreaker, followed by total kills
(warrior).
+5 Top Team on the Move descending scoring down to #5 (e.g. +5 for first, +4 for the
second, etc).
+2 Successful Bloodfeud. Bloodfeud victories for kills that did not occur during the
contest do not count to this total.
+5 Most Avoided Squad (teammates avoiding one another will not be counted)
-5 Most Avoiding Squad
+5 Most Turn's Most Popular
+5 Most Turn's Least Popular
**Turn 3 Scoring -- Slaughter Priest Memorial
No Challenges (DA fights scored regularly; avoids allowed)
+3 points for winning
+3 points for killing (giving 6 in total, 3 for the win and 3 for the kill)
+3 points for at least one of your warriors writing a personal (regardless of the
number of personals beyond the one you still only get three points). Make sure it
is written from one of your team's warriors and not simply the manager entity or
you will not get the points.
-3 points for losing
-3 points for being killed (so -6 in total: -3 for losing and -3 for being killed)
Special Note: Challenging during an SPM scoring turn will result in disqualification.

Thus, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one [especially] wicked person
who repents (changes his mind, abhorring his errors and misdeeds, and determines to
enter upon a better course of life) than over ninety-nine righteous persons who have
no need of repentance. --- Luke 15:7 Amplified Classic
Hammer had joy over one of his Warriors during the First Turn of the Wheel Of
Misfortune, so much so that he decided he may just allow this rag tag bunch to remain
in DM 45 after the conclusion of the contest in Stormcrowe Arena!
Only One Win, but Blue Dragon Blade had succeeded in Killing his opponent Shadow Orc
of Shadow Legion and that brought Great Satisfaction to the Veteran Manager, who had
been away from the Alastari Sands for far too long; plus his Abattoir 5 Blades now had
5 Points after the First Round of the Wheel of Misfortune!
Hammer was counting on his Abattoir 5 Blades to Not Squander the 5 Points by garnering
-5 Points in Round Two for being the Most Avoiding Squad ala the Morya Madness, but if
that happened, then it was on the Veteran Manager, for filling out Both Avoids for
each of his 5 Warriors!
Sticky Situation (the Original in DM 45) was bested with one swing by his Going
Berserk opponent Yak. Question is ... will he Survive the Wheel Of Misfortune?
The Fever Dreamer showed a Bit of Promise in his Sand Dance with No Washer Fluid of
Bash Bros Cars, as did A Funky Nightmare in his bout against Theon of Ice-N-Fire!
Sticky Blue Blade had Much More to Learn after his Encounter with the White House of
Yuppie Shelter, but He Might Still have a Future in Stormcrowe Arena!
Time Would Surely Tell in a Matter of Weeks!
[Time Jump]
Hammer almost nonchalantly reviewed the stack of info regarding his abandoned Stables
that the Gladiatorial Commission had been able to supply him from their cobweb
infested archives.
The mind of the Veteran Manager continuously wandered back to the Hey Day of Morya
Arena & the Morya Madness Contest that Hammer had Hosted in bygone days.
Round Two of the Wheel Of Misfortune had stirred some long forgotten memories deep
within the soul of the Veteran Manager. Memories & Nostalgia that Hammer could No
Longer Ignore as he tried to concentrate upon the info set before him!
[TIME JUMP]
A small crowd was gathered around the back tables of one of the more obscure taverns
frequented by gladiators, managers and fans of the Stormcrowe Arena, where one of the
Veteran Managers was holding court, sharing with those who would listen what had
happened in a Certain Arena in Alastari in days-gone-by.
He had just gotten back from North Fork Arena where his Aberrant 5 Blades had gone an
unsparkling 2-3 [the 2 Wins vs Convicted Thief & Street Legal ... but a Win is a Win
when a Veteran Manager returns to his old haunts!]
Two of his Losing Warriors had gained some much-needed Skills in their losses, but the
Third Loser Paid the Ultimate Price of Death Upon the North Fork Sands!
Hammer was encouraged by the potential entertainment value of the Replacement Warrior,
so much so that the Veteran Manager had decided to keep his Aberrant 5 Blades running
in DM 47 & possibly remain for a Rumored Contest Next Year!
So here was the Veteran Manager reminiscing about the contests that he had hosted in
DM 33 & Especially in DM 28 b& the 28 Rounds of Morya Madness that the Chaos Activity
of the Wheel Of Misfortune had somehow unleashed upon Stormcrowe Arena for Round Two
of the Current WOM Contest in DM 45 b& with some 'Fractured Categories' from the Morya
Madness that Hammer had Hosted in Years Gone By!
In the Original Morya Madness, the Prize Categories such as Highest-Ranked Warrior,
was for those Warriors ranked after 28 Rounds of Battle!
These particular rankings were by Each of the Ten Styles & Each Warrior was Required
to Declare Their Particular Style in the P-Ads on the Turn that They Entered the
Arena!
There was also the First Initiate Duel Master aka the First Warrior from Among the
Initiates Rankings that Battled Against All Odds to Seize the Morya DM Throne!
The Chaos that Darque had unleashed in DM 45 had the point scoring in Round Two of the
Wheel Of Misfortune b& that the Morya Madness had Awards for After 28 Rounds!
But Said Chaos was Beginning to Affect the Veteran Manager & Stirring Remembrances
that Desired to Be Re-Lived & Experienced Again!
Hammer was not the best of managers, but he was not the worst either. He did not have
much of a stomach for sending his pathetic warriors to the Dark Arena as he enjoyed
the challenge of trying to graduate every warrior, no matter how inept on the sands of
battle. But times had changed in Alastari since the Veteran Manager had been away &
there was a stirring in the deepest recesses of his heart & mind that perhaps it was
time to make either drastic changes or subtle adjustments!
However, what had not changed during his absence was the fact that Hammer still
enjoyed hosting Contests!
What the Veteran Manager enjoyed most about hosting a contest was watching some of the
Best Managers from across Alastari gather together and compete against one another.
Each trying to out-do the Other!
Hammer especially enjoyed reading the Team Spots & Personal Ads that were stirred by
the competitive fires of his hosted contests!
The more he thought about it b& the more a 'Historic Hammer Hurrah' appealed to him!
[TIME JUMP]
Hammer sat at the table in an obscure corner of the Inn, mulling over a variety of
options that had slowly surfaced to his conscious mind, since being drawn back to
Stormcrowe Arena to participate in the Wheel Of Misfortune contest hosted by Master
Darque. Chaos was permeating the very atmosphere surrounding the Veteran Manager!
It was the eve of the Second Round featuring some of the Morya Madness scoring
categories that Hammer had hosted those oh-so-many long years ago.
Now, something had sparked within him, causing a yearning fire to take hold of his
thoughts & cause a burning desire to slowly come to fruition.
Perhaps the Veteran Manager had yet one more 'Historic Hurrah' deep within to spur him
to host yet another contest for old timebs sake?
Indeed, there was a satisfaction to be once again experienced in sending forth a Call
across Alastari for Managers Old & New to assemble together in an Arena to Test Their
Mettle & Enjoy the Fellowship of Both Friends & Friendly Foes: as they clashed among
themselves with words in either Spots or P-Ads b& or upon the Contest Arena Sands!
Hammer had heard the Whisper in his Dream, as to the Location Where such an Historic
Event would Help Create New Legends that would Captivate Imaginations & Enthrall the
Masses who Thrilled at the Sounds of the Crescendo of Clashing Competitive Blades &
Words Bandied About in Spots & P-Ads!
The Decision was already made in the Creative Heart & Mind of the Veteran Manager!
It was Now Time to Contact the Gladiatorial Commission of Said Arena to make his pitch
to process the necessary paperwork for the Gladiatorial Commission to grant their
Approval & Possible Prizes to Entice an Unknown Number of Managers to Gather Together
to Make History in Another Hammer Hosted Historic Contest!
Hammer was Hopeful that This Nostalgic Historic Event Would Lure a Certain 'Manager'
Out of Retirement ... to Once Again Grace the Spots & P-Ads of the Chosen Arena ...
for Such a Historic Event as This Was About To Be!
"May Your Blades Be Sharp and Your Wits Sharper!"

SPY REPORT
Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for STORMCROWE. Like, YUPPIE SHELTER had to
be so embarrassed when they got kicked off #1 spot by GOING BERSERK! Way to go GOING
BERSERK! CANDY CRUSHERS had like a really albendranius week! Those hunks got a
4-1-0 and wound up as 11th team! Wanna hear about a real loser? Listen to this--WOB
AFW got 1-4-0 and dropped 11. Didn't see much of them after the fights! Really,
just how far can one team drop in one round? DARQUE FORCES dropped 17, which I
think's more than all the other teams combined! Cut this out and put it in your
scrapbooks, ABATTOIR 5 BLADES! 'Cause they got 4-1-0 and moved up to 17th! MVP
award for SHADOW MERC? SHADOW LEGION's proud of him after beating PEZ PULVERIZER and
getting 25 points. Talk about yer big time losers! RUNNING FREE got smashed by
SHRIMP SCAMP, and lost 26 points! This Duelmaster is like something else! HUMAN
BEAN stopped PRISM GUARD dead in hers tracks! I hear the top team insists all their
warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. SHEWISH BUFFET was STORMCROWE's most avoided team. Is there some
award for that? Is there some deep dark secret why AVID FANS' been avoiding SHEWISH
BUFFET so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Like, is RIME-ANCIENT
MARINER popular, or what? It was challenged the most in all of STORMCROWE! It's got
a 22-12-0, is that good? See if I ever talk to CAR SEAT HEADREST again! KURR was so
low when It challenged it. Hhmph! CAR SEAT HEADREST beat KURR. No surprise about
that. Really I'm not surprised CAR SEAT HEADREST would do such a scummy thing,
either. Speaking of challenging 38 points above did you hear about FAMILY RECIPE of
SHEWISH BUFFET vs. CSU COLLEGE RADIO's ALPHA REV? (And how was that intro!) FAMILY
RECIPE was so studly out there in the sands! Beating ALPHA REV and getting 27
points. SHEWISH BUFFET must be proud, for sure! Some fights are really unfair. How
do you think STUNTMAN feels about being challenged by NO WASHER FLUID, 20 points
above him? I was sorry to see such an unfair "fight" in STORMCROWE. NO WASHER FLUID
got 3 points after beating STUNTMAN, 20 points below him. LEMON is being unfair.
He's challenged down 22 against MIRAGE. I don't know why they let this stuff go on.
(I'd better shut up) Is this how BASH BROS CARS advances, by having their members
(LEMON) fight people that are really below them (MIRAGE)? See if I ever talk to
CHECK ENGINE again! FAUCI was so low when He challenged he. Hhmph! I was sorry to
see such an unfair "fight" in STORMCROWE. CHECK ENGINE got 3 points after beating
FAUCI, 18 points below him. For sure, I was holding my breath when I found out ROCK
OF AGES challenged RIME-ANCIENT MARINER. After all, haven't INTERNATIONAL and MAIDEN
JAPAN had a long standing duel in STORMCROWE? It wasn't a spectacular fight, or
anything, but RIME-ANCIENT MARINER wants me to write about it since it beat ROCK OF
AGES. Satisfied?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All STORMCROWE ever talks about is fighting!
Me, I'm more laid back. Enough already! All I've heard lately is "Will BOOK OF
THOMAS Bloodfeud CESPEDES of WOB AFW to revenge BIRDIE's death?" I mean, who cares?
What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I gotta leave. STORMCROWE is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much!
I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

RSI PANDEMIC UPDATE
We're doing okay out here in Arizona, staying mostly quiet and trying to stay healthy,
and we hope you and your families are well. Things are super weird right now.
Here's a quick update on what's coming up:
Summer 2020 Face-to-Face: In case there is any lingering doubt, the 2020 summer face-
to-face is cancelled. It just doesn't seem wise to hold it, and feedback is that most
of you would not be able to attend. Better to stay safe and stay at home, this time.
Summer 2020 Mail-In: So we'll hold a mail-in tournament this summer. It will be held
on the weekend of July 17-19, 2020. We are still finalizing the format--look for the
tournament announcement shortly after the freeze on June 6th.
Halloween 2020 Mail-In: Should be able to take place as normal. We bandied about the
idea of having a Fall FTF, but that doesn't look like a good idea.
Winter 2021 Face-to-Face: We have already secured a contract for the Winter FTF in
Tempe for our usual Martin Luther King weekend, January 15-17, 2021 and are crossing
our fingers that we will be able to hold that tournament in person, but there is still
some chance that we will need to cancel it as well. I expect we will know for certain
in November or December. Please mark it on your calendars and feel free to get hotel
reservations, but don't buy non-refundable plane tickets! (We are waiting for the
group code for reservations and will post it when we get it.)
Summer 2021 Face-to-Face: Surely we'll be able to have this one! *crossed fingers*
We're looking at the midwest cities for this one (Cincinnati or Minneapolis), so stay
tuned.

THE BLOODGAMES HAVE RETURNED!
For those of you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing
alive upon the arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even
though several warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only three will be crowned
Bloodgames Champions and be invited to the Isle of the Eye! And in this game mere
survival counts for little. A great general once said, "The object of battle is not
to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die for his." This general would have
greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames!
By popular demand, we will hold THREE Bloodgames arenas -- a regular and slow
Bloodgames by mail, and a Bloodgames which will run with the mail-in tourney!
DM 95: slow bloodgames (due every four weeks, due July 20)
DM 98: regular speed bloodgames (due every two weeks, due July 20)
DM 99: mail-in style bloodgames (processed with the tourney, due July 15)
Gameplay in the Bloodgames proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few
notable exceptions:
* STARTING A BLOODGAMES TEAM -- You don't need a special rollup to enter the
bloodgames. Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting style, each
warrior designed from scratch! (All are 84 points, 3-21, as usual.) Simply list your
ten warriors and send them to us; we will send you back overviews of your warriors so
you can submit strategies. The first turn is due mid-July and subsequent turns will
be due on Mondays.
* DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat
darker before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and
spirited. The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying
warrior. Even at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur. There are no
replacements -- once a warrior dies, that's it!
* STRATEGIES AND CHALLENGES -- New strategies may be issued for each turn for the
regular and slow bloodgames, while the mail-in bloodgames will process all ten rounds
with a single strategy. The only type of challenge available is a bloodfeud.
* MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest.
* ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill.
Errors must be reported before the next turn processes.
* NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Bloodgames
Champions may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games.
* AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. The top three living warriors with the
greatest number of kills, only one of each style, are deemed Bloodgames Champions.
Win/loss records and, if necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine
awards if there is a tie. All three Bloodgames Champions fight for free for six
months and can issue one Tournament Victor challenge each turn, allowing them to
challenge with increased priority, also for six months.
* FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up additional
teams but may fight only one team in each arena. The fee is $49 for all 10 rounds.
* AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once
the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won
their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus
will, however, be awarded to the Bloodgames Champions: Lady Sheila Greywand, of the
Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three gladiators in each Bloodgames
admission to the Advanced Duelmasters games. Any special training required to qualify
those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters combat will be conducted before transfer
into ADM. Astute managers will note that this means that three warriors that are
designed from scratch will survive the Bloodgames, win one of the top three places,
and go on to immortal glory! One of those warriors could be yours!
The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make.
When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
