BOURBON and POLITICS
A CONSORTIUM JOURNEY
With all the bourbon and political naming in the arenas of late, I thought this true
life story might be pertinent and interesting. From the life and living of... The
Consortium.
Back in 1968, my Dad, an over-the-road truck driver for Can-Tex (sewer pipe) and a
County Commissioner (Perry County, IN), asked me to take off a election day owhile in
college and come home and help out with the elections. Both Mom and Dad were working
the polls and needed me to travel out into the countryside and pick up Democratic
voters who were unable to get to the polls. (like no car, old age, poor health, well-
inebriated, etc) One must realize that Perry County was solidly Democrat, as was my
family, with Mom, VP of County Democratic Party, and Dad, Commissioner, also being
State Voting Representatives for Presidential Elections. My job was to pick up these
voters, bring them to the polls to vote; take them home and give them a half-pint
bottle of Yellowstone for their reward. I guess I picked up 20 or so voters, and then
delivered the rest of the large box of half-pints to our basement at home.
This was my first time to vote, and in the presidential election I voted straight
Democrat which included Hubert Humphrey for President (He lost to Nixon) and. Of
course, my Dad (Earl W. Smith) for County Commissioner reelection. (He won)
Between the next Presidential election, I finished my Engineering Degree;began working
as an Engineer for G.E. back in Perry County; got married; had a daughter (Jodi Ann);
obtained an M. .A.; moved to Fayetteville, N.C to work for a Black & Decker start-up;
and enlightenedly became a solid Conservative.
During the 1972 election, my wife's first to be able to vote, we cast our ballots
straight Republican. (Nixon was reelected) Several days after the election, a box was
delivered to our apartment in Fayetteville. It was addressed to six-month old Jodi,
from my Father. Inside were many Democratic items -- blow up donkeys, pins, ribbons,
etc -- from the campaign. There was also a simple hand-written letter:
*Dear Jodi, *
*I hope when you grow up, you are more intelligent than your father and your
mother.*
*Love, Grandpa*
The story does not, however, end there. Fast forward fifty years or so. My father had
passed away at 68, and my mother had just recently died at 91. My sister and I are
hosting an auction of all the items in our parents house and the large barn. (The home
and 20 acres of property had already been sold to a buyer waiting to take possession.)
As we went through the many items (some quite antique; my Mom and I in my youth had
been in every Book Club possible and owned several hundred books; Mom collected 200ish
dolls, some from many countries of my work travels) for auction, we came to the
clothes hamper just outside the upstairs bathroom, which held clean towels for
bathing. After lifting out the towels on top, we surprisingly discovered 27 half-pint
bottles of Yellowstone bourbon which must have been from the aftermath of that 1968
election. (Since alcohol could not be auctioned and neither my sister's family nor
mine drank, we donated them to the auctioneer. I wish, now, that I had been smarter
and retained them for myself. They may have a great asset for use by some of my
friends at our Face-To-Face events.)

Welcome back, Stormcrowe! The sun blazes, the crowd roars, and behind the scenes, a
gladiator signs a waiver they should have read more carefully. I am The Gamemaster,
your ever-delightful dealer of destiny, host of the thrilling, chilling, and
occasionally gut-spilling spectacle known as The Masked Mayhem!
Step right up, dear contestants and carnage connoisseurs! If you are ready for daring
upsets and questionable decisions, you have come to the right place. Our grand prize
may or may not include continued existence, so let's spin the wheel of wonder and see
who's still breathing!
Sweet Emotion claims the throne from Ontor! With a smooth and decisive dismantling,
Sweet Emotion rises to the top at 11-4-0, proving once again that nothing shouts
"victory" like overwhelming force! A sweet tune indeed, though Ontor thought is
sounded suspiciously like a funeral dirge.
The leaderboards light up with wolves and giants, everywhere! Madwand's guy may hold
the throne, but it is Tripwire's crew rising through the award ranks. Of Wolf & Giant
remains the top team with a 12-3-0 record. They also made huge strides with a 5-0
effort today, giving them 52 points of recognition. On the flipside, Philanthropists
took a tumble, dropping like a contestant who picked Door #3 and found a dragon behind
it!
Now, the category that no one wants to win, but somebody always does! Draco is the
most avoided team. Apparently, possibly breathing fire and winning lots of fights
makes people run away from you. Who knew? Tallow's Vault of Broken Hand was caught
avoiding them most. Ah yes, the classic strategem of "If we don't fight them, they
can't beat us." Bold. Questionable. Entertaining. Oola Dragon Blade was challenged
more times than a trivia champion on a losing streak. The crowd loves a target, and
Oola wore it like a glowing sign.
Flake continues their dazzling run, leaping up to defeat Beulah Balbricker despite a
massive point gap. Caramel Cudgel delivered the most permanent result of the evening,
eliminating Lusicious Malfoy in a veteran clash. Sticky, sweet, and very fatal. And in
a match that lasted long enough to sell advertising space, Rev. Bubba Flavel survived
a 20-minute grind with Key Master, which aged both contestants and the audience
visibly.
Remember, contestants, you can't lose if you don't play, but where is the fun in that?
Behind every mask is a mystery, behind every mystery is a strategy, and behind every
strategy is a very real chance of being flattened into the arena decor. Choose wisely
next turn: Glory, Infamy, or Immediate and Irreversible Consequences! I will be here,
smiling as always, ready to reveal what is behind the curtain!

Well, what are you looking at, STORMCROWE? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. If this keeps up, FAR TRAVELERS 2512,
you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 7 in the rankings?
KNIGHTS OF SORROW turned their 3-2-1 turn into a 13th place rank in the listings this
turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch
DRACO's heads swell from their 5-0-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk,
big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see CARAMEL CUDGEL win a fight
and gain 25 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, JIM ROCKFORD beat CRANDAL GEIN and CRANDAL
GEIN lost 9 points. You're breakin' my heart. And it's out with the old, in with
the new, as SWEET EMOTION takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old
Duelmaster. Heh, heh. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you
think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's
the big D? DRACO was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble...
mumble... curse... And it looks like VAULT OF BROKEN HAND avoided them the most this
turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm frightfully
impressed, OOLA DRAGON BLADE was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego
swell, sports fans. Now look at this. ALTAIS challenged down 17 against BUSHWOOD
'25's GOOD WOOD. What a weasel! And sorry to say, ALTAIS defeated GOOD WOOD,
leaving a bad feeling with the crowd. I think exploitive snob is the term I'm
looking for. I suspect either a 21 will or a 21 ego on this one, but FLAKE has
challenged up by 29 in an attempt against BEULAH BALBRICKER. And The Shadow's
Fountain has banned BEULAH BALBRICKER from service until next turn for losing to
FLAKE and giving her 22 points in the process! Ha! BANXE was challenged by one of
DRACO's warriors this turn, with RASTABAN having a lead of 19 points going into the
fight. And golly gee, RASTABAN beat BANXE. Aren't we all surprised and impressed?
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. And what a stunning loss we have here,
boys and girls, LUSCIOUS MALFOY of DARQUE FORCES has added the final loss to hers
12-9-1. Tee hee! We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate
catches up with you sooner that later?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of STORMCROWE. I feel much better now. Paste this one in your
