On the south coast of the Ardivent Peninsula:

     "It's a golem."
The two standbys jumped at the sound of the woman's voice, but Eclipse just
cocked his head in an unspoken question.
She gestured toward the doorway with her golden shield. "The Black Tower. It's
a golem, a magical construct. Not a live thing itself."
"But not an inert piece of architecture, either," Eclipse said.
"No, not inert." Lady Protector Stepharoo moved to stand shoulder to shoulder
with the recently graduated Eclipse. The two of them stared down the length of the
hall to the open door, and the looming darkness beyond.
     "Dangerous but not malicious."
"The people who made it are malicious, though." She shivered, the light from
her shield flickering. "I could hear them, in the amber. It was like a lens,
focusing their...personas, thoughts, intentions. They're all about darkness without
a dawn."
"That isn't possible," Ternas d'Aleen snapped, ignoring the Ambitious Guard's
hushing motions. "Dawn is REQUIRED. It's part of the whole concept of night!"
Stepharoo turned her lambent amber gaze on the Assassin. "I said 'darkness',
not 'night', there is a difference!"
"Death without end," Eclipse murmured. "Quite theological, in a nasty way."
"Or being buried alive," Stepharoo agreed. She glanced at the shards of her
amber shroud and shuddered. "NOT a fun thing, I can tell you."
"We knew the Black Tower represented the Bad Guys," d'Aleen said. "There's no
need to go poetical or metaphorical over that."
"There might be," Eclipse said. He tilted his head thoughtfully. "Some
theological stuff can only be expressed that way. But if I understand you, what
you're saying is that the Black Tower, and the people who made it, are so Bad that
the ordinary Bad Guys are just naughty by comparison?"
She nodded, her expression relieved. "Yes, exactly! I knew you'd understand.
And we have to stop them."
"Easier said than done," he answered. "How do we set about it? And no, I do
NOT want to spend weeks 'gathering information' on the Black Tower." He glared at
the two standbys. "We need to act quickly."
"Right. I have a plan," Stepharoo said.

                                      SPY REPORT

Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport.
I doubt ARDIVENT will ever be the same. And let's see, VECORDIUS fought HERMY COLLIN
and gained 19 points and contributed to CYNICAL DELUSIONS' 2-1-1. DEBRA CONKLIN has
lost to FRIENDLY CONSTABLE, falling 12 points, while helping make BLUVALLEY WARRIORS
a 2-3-0 turn. And all eyes were on SOLARIS this turn as he ascended to the throne of
Duelmaster. ARDIVENT has a new victor! Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard
from unimpeachable sources that The Seaside Manor uses trolls in their stew. Talk
about gristle!
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true.
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. Banners at half mast, warriors, BLUVALLEY WARRIORS has lost HERMY COLLIN,
and you might say all of ARDIVENT has felt the loss, except maybe CYNICAL DELUSIONS.
Seriously now, is it really honorable for VECORDIUS from CYNICAL DELUSIONS to kill
HERMY COLLIN and give BLUVALLEY WARRIORS the chance to bloodfeud? Mmmm, could be.
Is it really true that ARDIVENT has more dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just
thought I'd ask...
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords
sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in ARDIVENT again, farewell--
Alarond the Scribe

All (the three of you left) -- This is the Phantom, checking in after a long time
missing. At least Ardivent is still alive and the old gal looks just as I remember
her. I am thinking of returning to my home in Ardivent but its a long journey. Do
you miss my music, I wonder.... -- Phantom

Solaris -- Well, now you're trying to match yourself against another striker. Look
where this has gotten you. A bashing with the stick is not good for the career.
Well, I look forward to our final match; may the best man win. -- Golden Fury

Take that, Chardinee; thought I would give you a taste of waste. -- Break Point

Bluevalley -- Ummm, what's with the Aimed Blow styles? Break Point is getting
nervous. He's looking at retiring soon, so stay away, or someone's going to getting
a whooping. -- Eclipse

Lori -- Thank you for having the nerve to fight such a well respected warrior as
myself. Your youthful character, and your shiny little weapon, brings joy to this
arena. Let's dance again. -- Vecordius

Vecordius -- Gosh, you really ARE cynical! I never imagined anyone could be like
THAT. -- Lori Collin
P.S. But...is it a delusion, or is it real?

"The Honest Merchant." Now THERE is a cynical delusion for you! What a joke. --
Becker Collin, not laughing

I do like fighting the Ambitious Guard, dear Harbad Kore. It isn't because he
teaches all that well, he doesn't, but he is so superbly tall, dark, and handsome,
with just a few small scars to add an edge. I like that in a man. -- Hermy Collin
P.S. Of course, there could never be something between us, because he's an ELF, but
still, a woman can dream, can't she?

Well, they SAY that he's a Trustworthy Scribe, but I don't know, he just seems
totally shifty-eyed to me. I bet he embezzles and nobody's, like, caught him at it
yet. -- Debra Conklin

Well, darn. I almost had that Shiftyeyed Volunteer, and it would have been for the
good of Ardivent if I HAD killed him. After all, he doesn't have any teammates who
would have bloodfeuded. -- Jacinthe

Ed. -- Somebody who is trying to use it to resole their shoes? -- Hermy Collin

Anyone who's trying to resole their shoes with chicken deserves everything that
happens to their feet. -- Ed.

Becker Collin -- You are a disappointment to us all. You should send yourself to the
Dark Arena and put yourself out of our misery. -- Kalbin Silverhand, as honest a
merchant as ever came out of Khalhums

Vecordius -- You got exactly what you deserved, you stuck-up delusion! -- M.
Kingfisher Chardinee

Becker Collin -- Ah, graduate, why don't you? Then you can adventure and I can find
myself too busy to rescue your sorry ass. -- Harbad Kore, Ambitious Guard

Hermy Collin -- Oatmeal? What is this stuff? Where is the ketchup? -- Tamos Krik,
Visiting Orc

Lord Protector Solaris -- It says here that you're an orc. We have a firm rule
against subsidizing orcs. Go pester the Greywand, she actually likes your kind. --
