The lintel glowed dull red above them, and the ground trembled. "Feels like an earthquake," Eclipse muttered. "That may just be a cynical delusion," he added. "It could be a major attack beginning--" "Doesn't matter." Stepharoo sounded confident. "It can't touch us as long as we're together." Eclipse didn't respond to that, but he wished her certainty came from some other source than what "They" had told her. Still, he'd heard that the safest place to be during an earthquake was in a doorway. It was a hundred yards, more or less, from the doorsill to the edge of the water, and the Black Tower was farther out than the edge of the water by maybe another hundred yards, but it seemed to loom over them, infinitely tall, without visible details, a well of darkness into which light and sound fell and vanished. Eclipse suppressed a sigh. Mythic, beyond a doubt. And mythic always meant trouble. His grip tightened a little where he was holding Stepharoo's hand. She squeezed back. He could do worse for a partner. He took another step forward, matching her stride for stride. The darkness around the Tower had weight, density, so that it was like moving against the pressure of a flowing river. There were voices in it, whispered suggestion that he couldn't quite make out--and didn't want to. Whatever it meant mythically, in ordinary terms the Black Tower was evil, and any suggestion it could make would be an evil one. Would the evil it bred extend beyond the range of its shadow? One foot in front of the other, steadily moving forward. Moving closer to the Tower. He thought of all the things he would rather be doing with this afternoon, then pushed the thoughts away. This was no time for anything that might look like a doubt. Certainty, that's what he needed, and steady forward movement. The Peninsula here had a narrow beach of coarse sand and small pebbles, and they were crunching under his feet. So quickly! The water between shore and Tower was black, and as flat as a mirror, but dull and unreflective. At least a hundred yards to the base of the Tower, maybe a little farther. Did they wade? Could they, in their current mythic roles, walk on the water? He couldn't turn his head, didn't dare take his eyes off the Tower, but he tried to look at Stepharoo out of the corner of one eye. Here in the heart of the Tower's shadow, her golden light was tarnished and weakened. She still glowed, but the glow lit nothing around her. The Lady Protector didn't seem worried, though, so he shouldn't be either. Except that it would be easier to be unworried if he knew what happened next. Stepharoo swung her shield around to face the Black Tower directly and raised it to shoulder height. She seemed to be striking a pose, and he thought of the Noble Assassin calling her the Ace of Lamps. It was that kind of pose, he almost saw a formal border around her. But she didn't let go of his hand, and her grip tightened. She wanted him to do something. What? Ah, he needed a pose, too. This whole thing was full of tarot conventions. She was the Ace of Lamps, he was the Ace of Shadows. What kind of pose was appropriate for the Ace of Shadows? Without conscious thought, his feet moved to a firm stance, and he raised his own shield to mirror her gesture. Shield? Where had that come from? But it was a shield of shadows, and maybe even the shadow of a shield, not black but deeply blue-violet, translucent, and here in the black umbra of the Tower, faintly luminous. The two shields came together, edges touching with a click. Light poured from them, making a path of reflection across the water. The gladiators moved forward together, stepping onto the path of light. It was springy underfoot, tricky to negotiate. Eclipse thought of it as being like walking on a hammock, or close-woven net. The water was not as smooth as it had looked from the shore, rippling and shifting under his feet. The light-path was just wide enough for the two of them, and he had to give half his attention to staying on it. But the other half he kept on the water around them. If he had been in charge of the Tower, he'd have monsters in the water around it. Like...that one. A black shape in the black water, half-guessed at, but he knew it was there. Damn. He had Stepharoo's right hand in his left, and the shield, held in contact with hers, in his right, which left no hands free to draw a weapon if it came to a fight. Because he had a strong notion that letting go of Stepharoo, or breaking contact with her shield, would be a Bad Idea. "There's a monster in the water," he said. "Why?" She didn't look away from the shining path across the waves--and there were waves now, growing steadily bigger. "Did you expect one?" "Well...yeah." "Try expecting it to go away without doing anything to us," she said. "Why? Why can't you--?" "I'm trying to expect the waves to go away." Her grip on his hand tightened as the path slipped down the side of a wave and her feet slid on it. "I worried about the waves, and now I have to un-worry them. YOU have to un-worry the monster." "It's there because I was looking for it? That's a heck of a way to run a--" "It's the mythic thing." She paused and then said firmly, "There's no wind." The waves flattened a little. "Right, not a breath of wind. And no monster could possibly reach us as long as we stay on the path. Which we aren't going to step off of because we're not idiots." The black-on-black shape turned away from them and then submerged. Good! This mythic stuff was trickier than he'd thought. Now if only-- He clamped a firm lid on his imagination. No good thinking about things that could go wrong, if thinking would make it so. How much farther to the Tower? He risked a glance ahead. Yikes! They were nearly to it. He could just make out a bit of rocky ground around the base of it, and no door. Well, they could stand on the rocks, and the door just didn't show because...it was closed. "How do we get them to open the door?" he asked. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 266): TOM SAWYER of SMITHSONIAN (The Curator, mgr.) DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Greetings Ardivent, What an honor to come back to this fine city and gain the throne right off the bat. As I returned to Ardivent after finishing fourth in the battle royal in Talcama, I was disheartened by the state of the city's guild halls. Dark were the familiar houses of Deathtongue, Deadly Shadows, The Cestus Group, Tuft Tuggers, Men at Work, Airborne Attack and even the Fandils. Although this is not my first arena, I do consider it my home since it was the first arena I got 100+ wins in and where my first graduate came from so it does hold a special place in my life. I would love to return this city to a decent size. I can't recall it ever being huge but I know it held twenty plus teams for a good amount of time. I would love for it to hold ten teams participating on a regular basis. I think it can happen and I think that the Wise Old Fandil will be lighting the oil in the lamps of his guild hall soon with a possibility of the fine lady Adie running a Tuft Tugger or two when she has the ability. I look forward to crossing swords with you all on a regular basis. DeGotti SPY REPORT Hail and well met warriors of ARDIVENT! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. TEMPTATION caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested LORI COLLIN and was awarded 14 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, TEMPTATION put down LORI COLLIN, causing her to lose 12 points of recognition in the process. As is fitting, the most sought after warrior on the challenge boards this week was none other than Duelmaster 8-BALL himself. Who here was not present for the title fight this week as VECORDIUS boldly challenged 8-BALL in order to strive for the Duelmasters honors? Although VECORDIUS made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of victorious 8-BALL. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps? But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades that is city ARDIVENT. What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his foe's mortality? Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this! A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME 8-BALL 996 16 18 0 117 INFERNAL LORDS (8) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME VECORDIUS 3870 14 6 1 90 CYNICAL DELUSIONS (218) BREAK POINT 2741 20 12 0 89 CYNICAL DELUSIONS (218) -GLOW-ROOM 3404 11 6 0 78 FANDILS (75) TEMPTATION 3314 8 5 0 75 INFERNAL LORDS (8) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BECKER COLLIN 3850 14 14 1 57 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME DR STEINBURGER 3442 9 2 0 55 FANDILS (75) LORI COLLIN 3888 6 5 0 54 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) -AZGUD 3253 7 11 0 48 INFERNAL LORDS (8) -IRONWOLF 274 5 1 0 42 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -DAVY PRIVETTE 3447 6 1 0 32 FANDILS (75) SMILING MOUNTAIN 3896 2 0 0 27 RUBY DRAGONS (336) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MARY CATHERINE 3459 4 1 1 19 FANDILS (75) -UG 271 4 2 1 19 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) -KROKUS 272 4 2 0 19 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) -TARAMON 270 3 3 0 18 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) MINACIOUS 3891 2 0 0 17 CYNICAL DELUSIONS (218) -WEASEL 273 4 2 0 15 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) FIIZ 3332 1 4 0 13 INFERNAL LORDS (8) COOLIN SCOT 3897 1 1 0 13 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) DEBRA CONKLIN 3890 3 3 0 12 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) JACINTHE 3892 2 2 0 8 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) -RYTHYM WIZARD 3357 1 1 0 8 INFERNAL LORDS (8) EARL & SISSY 3478 0 1 0 1 FANDILS (75) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn. We really, really enjoy the Amber adventure that Stepharoo, a Fandil Lord Protector, has gotten herself into. We want to be here to celebrate (hopefully) the outcome. -- All Us Fandils Of Old Ok, who sent the assassin? I'm telling Golden to take it easy; this will be an easy match possibly. Do what's normal, duck, parry, strike and so on. I move to my seat and get ready to watch the battle. Uhmmm, who the heck is Kung Fu Master? I'm checking the roster for all the teams, no Kung Fu, now I'm starting to wonder, did they send this guy from Advanced or Primus to teach me a lesson. I will get to the bottom of this. How do you bloodfeud a ghost? -- Eclipse, quite bothered and irritated 8-Ball -- Glad you could drop by and take my seat. Didn't appreciate that too much, but that's the way it goes; hope you stick around for some of the fun. Lately warriors here have been dropping like flies. Leeta loses two my boss loses one, to some freak of nature that I will track down and destroy one day. Besides all that it's good to see a new face. It's a shallow arena right now but looks promising. -- Vecordius Lori -- You know this is going to look a bit like Deja View me from lying down at my feet syndrome. You're going to have to work on that cardio. I'm working on just about everything, at this point. Breaking the wind, or Break point. Coolin Scot -- Clever name; can't wait to see your style. Hope you're not another aimed blow style. Eclipse taught me the fine art of slasher, so I'm going to go with that for the awhile and see how that goes. Lori is top dog right now but I'm hoping with some training and luck that I will end up top dog soon. Right now I'm just going to focus on slash and run. Kung Fu Master -- Who the heck are you? The Mordanti Olympics, having been gone for six years, have returned to the Mordanti Alliance, sponsored by Amicitia Primoris. Teams have competed against each other for recognition and notoriety four times in the past. It is far past time for the fifth Mordanti Olympics to be held. The Mordanti Olympics shall be held in the Mordant arena (DM-1) from May 1st (T544) through Oct 30 (T557). There will be a 'registration period' lasting until T543, where teams will be allowed to register by activating in Mordant and declaring their participation in the personals. Rules will be posted in the Mordant arena (DM-1) newsletter no later than T543, but shall be available online before then. An announcement will be made as to where they will be posted. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.
