Stepharoo set her foot on the rocks in perfect unison with Eclipse. "We knock,"
she said. She sounded firm, but Eclipse thought he detected uncertainty under her
words.
After all, knock on what? There was no door that he could see, in fact, no
details at all. Just a seamless wall of darkness going up forever. He reminded
himself that in a mythic situation, belief was important. "Where there's a wall," he
said firmly, "there must be a door. That is the inescapable nature of things."
The darkness immediately in front of them began to ripple and crawl as it sought
an appropriate door-shape.
Quietly, for Stepharoo's ear only, Eclipse asked, "Why can't we just imagine the
Tower is defeated? Not here anymore, gone forever--"
"Mythic doesn't work that way," she said. "We can shape the details, but the
underlying pattern has its own existence, and we have to conform to that. Work
through it." She was silent for a few moments, then went on, "If it was a quest, for
instance, we could...well, we could imagine a market so clean there were no flies, or
someone coming along to sell us horses when we needed them, that kind of thing. But
we couldn't change the quest itself, the goal and the obstacles and stuff. We
couldn't just PRETEND we'd done the quest, we'd still have to DO it." Out of the
corner of his eye, Eclipse could see her biting her lip. "And I think this IS a
quest, you know. We're questing for..." she groped for words, "for the key that will
unlock the keystone and let the tower fall down."
"Ah. Okay. I guess I see what you're saying. Mind you, I don't LIKE it, but
if that's what we have to deal with, we'll deal with it. A key, huh?"
"That's just a figure of speech--"
"Good enough to go with, and it always helps to know what we're looking for. A
Key." He put as much belief into that word as he could, visualizing a key like the
one to the manor house behind them, as big as his hand, heavy, made of black iron and
having complicated wards. He could SEE that Key; he could feel it taking reality
from his belief. He nodded sharply and returned his full attention to the door that
had taken shape in the tower's black wall.
There had been no changes in the last minute or two, so he guessed that it was
complete. Ten feet high, three feet wide. They wouldn't be able to go through it
side by side. Black wood bound with black iron, set into a pointed arch of black
stones. The keystone here was carved into a monster's head, fanged mouth gaping,
eyes bright with flame, as it leaned out above the doorstep. There appeared to be
neither lock, knocker, nor handle. He started to shift his grip on the "shield of
shadows" and saw that it had become a warhammer. Okay. All the better to knock
with. He raised the hammer and thumped the door twice, firmly but not violently.
Save the violence for later, if it was needed.
     A long pause, everything waiting.
The door swung inward with a horrible shrieking of unoiled hinges.
"You'd think even a Bad Guy could spare a little time and effort for basic
maintenace," Eclipse muttered.
"Maybe they're just too cheap to put in a doorbell." Stepharoo gave his hand a
quick squeeze, centered her golden-shining shield in front of the door, and stepped
forward.
     Eclipse was right beside her.
"We can't go through side by side," she said. "We stay in contact, though.
I'll lead the way."
     "No. I should lead--"
"There's no light inside," Stepharoo said. "How will you be able to see if
someone--" She closed her mouth suddenly, biting off any further words.
Biting off, he guessed, the possibility of an attack. This mythic stuff could
trap them if they weren't careful. Maybe one would happen, but she wasn't going to
imagine it into existence, for which he was grateful. "There will be a light when I
step in," he said, putting as much belief in that statement as he could.
"Of course." Her voice came out almost as a whisper. She swallowed and licked
her lips, took a deep breath, and nodded. "Magical towers are always lighted when
you step inside. I knew that."
They rotated slightly so that Eclipse was in the lead. He raised his foot.
Paused, glanced down at the doorsill. After a moment's thought, he stepped carefully
over it and into the Tower.
The floor was firm and smooth. Tile, he decided. Sourceless light bloomed and
brightened. He glanced down. Tile, sure enough. Stepharoo crowded in behind him.
He looked around, the warhammer held at the ready. He hadn't thought about
furnishings, and there were none. No windows, and, as he turned, he saw that the
door was closed and not visible from this side. They could probably imagine it back
when they needed it. At least, he hoped so. There were no other doors visible. A
spiral stair, a lacy concoction of black iron and gilding, rose through a hole in the
center of the floor and vanished into a hole in the center of the ceiling.
"Well," he said, "so far so good. Now do we go up, or down?"

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Greetings warriors of Ardivent,

Here I sit on the throne once again. I figure if I hold it for one more turn, I
will be off to the Isle.
Vecordius, a change of weapon and most likely strat for you but still the same
result. Obviously I am the superior warrior. You will just have to wait your turn
to get the DM back.
I don't have much time this week so I have to keep my ramblings to a minimum.
Until next time....

8-Ball

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly ARDIVENT games. Former top team CYNICAL DELUSIONS was
unseated this week as INFERNAL LORDS moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot
with a 3-0-0 record for the round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around
the corner! Witness how this week FANDILS went 3-0-0 to move up 3 in the rankings.
My praise to INFERNAL LORDS for their 3-0-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a
skillfully fought round deserving of notice! GLOW-ROOM caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as it skillfully bested BREAK POINT and was awarded 18 points
in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, RYTHYM WIZARD put down
COOLIN SCOT, causing him to lose 8 points of recognition in the process. Although
VECORDIUS made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of victorious
8-BALL. Would you believe that over half of the old women in ARDIVENT seem to feel
that they could fight better than you gladiators?
Many and various are the arts of battle. In ARDIVENT "art" is a word that has
long since passed from the language! I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when
this week's challenge seeking began. INFERNAL LORDS is feared. This much I can say.
If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find any of
FANDILS last week. Busy avoiding INFERNAL LORDS? Mighty fighters cannot but expect
competition from those below. BECKER COLLIN take warning! You have more than a few
enemies in ARDIVENT.
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune
but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
The girls are as pretty in ARDIVENT as ever I remembered them....and the
fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! Ahh, but I can hear the spires of
a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember - the pen is
mightier than the sword, but a maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Ahhhhhh. The names of old.... Deadly Shadows, Deathtongue (who completed his 1000th
win a short while ago in Ardivent), The Cestus Group, Infernal Lords, Men At Play....
Those were the days. DeGotti, thanks for reviving the moment. -- Fandil The Wise

Stepharoo -- You were always quite the student. You made me feel like a great
teacher and mentor. I see from your adventure that you have learned well. Good luck
to you and Eclipse. -- Fandil The Wise

Becker Collin -- Seeing the doctor is not always a good thing. -- Dr Steinburger

Minacious -- You were just too darn good for the both of us! -- Earl & Sissy

Punishment, and the Ruby Dragon Team -- I apologize to you for the death. It was not
my intention. -- Mary Catherine

Ruby Dragons -- Fandils are not killers by nature or by intent. We rue the day that
our competitors fall, never to fight again in The Arena Of The Red Sands, where it
happens far too often. Health. Humility. Honor. -- Fandil The Wise

Congratulations to 8-Ball of the Infernal Lords. A great old-timer from a great old-
time team is Duelmaster Of The Red Sands. So it should be. Salute. -- Fandil The
Wise

Fandil -- I am very glad the elders decided to gather together the fine Fandils
stable. The Consortium always add a flair to any arena they participate in. --
DeGotti

I wonder if Wild Cards in Aradi were/are still run by Technogeek? Does anyone know?
I saw they were reactivated last turn; I wonder if he will reactivate Deathtongue
here in our fine city. -- DeGotti

What kind of bug is in the system that allows the Barbarian Horde to stay listed? I
remember when they first arrived here in Ardivent. -- DeGotti

Leeta -- Thanks for the welcome back. I hope to entice more teams to return. --
DeGotti

Temptation -- Gosh, it IS. Wow! WHERE did you get those shoes? I'm just, like,
totally MAD for shoes! -- Lori Collin, deeply tempted

Fiiz -- No, sorry, but I'm too phlegmatic to fiiz. I leave that to the elves. --
Jacinthe

Dr Steinburger -- Whew, I thought I had some endurance. Guess NOT, eh? -- Becker
Collin
P.S. You could've taught me some.

Smiling Mountain -- Oh, right, just before you drop ROCKS on my head. -- Debra
Conklin

Friendly Constable -- A true friend would have taught me more than one skill. --
Coolin Scot

Break Point or whoever spoke -- Thanks, I like the name myself. It's been in my
family for a while.
Leeta says an aimed blow is unlikely on this team, unless she gets a replacement
with a 21 deftness. Something about having "already graduated an aimer from here."
(shrug) Whatever. -- Coolin Scot

Harbad Kore, Ambitious Guard -- How about getting new ambitions? Maybe you could be
the top wine-taster of Ardivent, or something. -- Becker Collin

Fandil -- Of course the outcome will be worth celebrating! However else? It just
might, um, take a little time to get there? -- the Scribe

Lord Protector Vecordius -- Surely you're cynical enough not to buy into the delusion
that the Baron will give you lands just because you're a successful gladiator? If he
got into the habit of doing that, this whole barony would belong to gladiators, and
while you're fine entertainers, as a general rule, you're not administrators,
farmers, or what have you. So, accept our good wishes and be off with you. The Isle
beckons. -- Arvendon, Secretary to the Baron of Ardivent

22 February 2006
The Olympics have arrived!

The Mordanti Olympics, having been gone for six years, have returned to the Mordanti
Alliance, sponsored by Amicitia Primoris. Teams have competed against each other for
recognition and notoriety four times in the past. It is far past time for the fifth
Mordanti Olympics to be held. The Mordanti Olympics shall be held in the Mordant
arena (DM-1) from May 1st (T544) through Oct 30 (T557). There will be a
'registration period' lasting until T543, where teams will be allowed to register by
activating in Mordant and declaring their participation in the personals. Rules will
be posted in the Mordant arena (DM-1) newsletter no later than T543, but shall be
available online before then. An announcement will be made as to where they will be
