Eclipse glanced at her but didn't ask the questions that rose in his mind. It was hard not being able to say things out loud lest the saying make them real. Keeping that kind of guard on his tongue was hard. "Up it is," he said. He just hoped she had knowledge or a firm image of what they would find up those stairs. And that it was a good thing they'd find. Such as the Key. His mental image of the Key reappeared, and he spent a few seconds--which is longer than it sounds like, as any gladiator being battered around the arena knows--concentrating on the picture. But finding the Key in the first place they looked would probably be too easy. The gladiator tripped and almost fell, returned his attention to the here-and- now, and saw that he was at the foot of the spiral staircase. Stepharoo was already on the second step and had a foot set on the third, and she was tugging him upward behind her. "Pay attention," she hissed. "We have to stay together!" "Together. Right. I knew that." He started up the steps himself. "Any idea what's up at the top?" "Someone who will help us." Eclipse raised an eyebrow but nodded. A good choice. They climbed steps. And more steps. And more. How many, how far? It was impossible to count them. More than enough, Eclipse decided. "We should be at the top any minute," he said. "Yes," Stepharoo agreed. She was panting a little. "We should be at the top NOW." The vague light around them flowed and changed, becoming a ceiling over their heads with an opening through which the stair went up. Eclipse found it a relief to see something besides a haze of light and an endless stairway. His legs felt leaden. The warhammer...no, it was a sword now. Okay, the sword he was carrying drawn and at the ready seemed as heavy as a maul. Too many stairs. His mind felt leaden, too. The room at the top of the stairs was...not like any other room of his experience. Figured. It was probably "mythic." Large, round, high-ceilinged, rimmed with tall arched windows. Half of it was filled with a golden haze of light: the half in front of Stepharoo. The other half, behind him, was all in velvet darkness. A man stood exactly where light and dark divided; only the half of him that was on the side of light could be seen. He wore a white robe that fell to the floor, a green cord wrapped twice around his waist, and over all he had a cloak of the darkest shade of red. "Light and Darkness," he said. "Perfect Balance. This is as it should be. I am the Magician, and it is my role to maintain the Balance of Powers." "This tower does not belong in our world," Eclipse answered. "It should NOT be there." "It disturbs our balance," Stepharoo added. The Magician nodded. "This is a problem with Darkness. It always strives for all, where Light is content with half. Thus Darkness wins for a time, until Light moves to redress the Balance." "I'm sure that's all really mythic," Eclipse said, and if a little sarcasm crept in, he didn't really care, "but it doesn't HELP us much." "I am helping you more than you realize, for I am holding my counterpart, the Dark Magician, in balance, so that he cannot strike against you." "But what are we supposed to DO?" Stepharoo demanded. "We don't know about these things!" The Magician frowned. "You were not trained in the Paths of Myth? How can this be? I see in you the perfect embodiments of Lamps and Shadows. This is not chance." "It may not be chance," Eclipse said, "but it's sure a mystery!" The green cord around the Magician's waist twisted, becoming obviously a serpent with its own tail in its mouth. It released the tail and raised a flat, triangular head. "That iss ridiculouss! You musst know. You sshould have been trained from infanssy." "Well, we weren't." The Magician frowned. "Then I suppose we must find you a Guide. That could be difficult until we know what kind of Journey you must make." "It's a Quest," Stepharoo said helpfully. The Magician brushed that aside with a gesture. "All Journeys are Quests. But not all are alike. And it is of crucial importance to begin correctly." "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step," Eclipse commented, that old proverb having just popped into his head. "There's a single step!" Stepharoo pointed toward one of the tall windows. Beyond it was a twilit plain with a sandy path across it, and one footprint on the path. "Then that is the way you must begin your Journey," the Magician said. "Fare you well on that path, and be sure that we will help as we can." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 268): INOCHI of YAKUZA (Sensei Jan, mgr.) Greetings once again, warriors of Ardivent. As I predicted, 8-Ball got his invite after holding the throne for three turns. It just so happened that I hit his favorite OE/AL on his return to combat. I must thank Vecordius for allowing him to go desperate in our first fight in order for me to find it. 8-Ball is my second PL to graduate but he was designed sooo long ago. I must admit he is rather burnt. At one point in a tourney he hit three consecutive wit trains with a 15 will--astounding. For all those that are interested, his favs are: MOD/VH, LS, Learns Rip. I hope that whoever gets the throne next will continue writing a column, even if it is just a few words. Until I reclaim the top honor of this fine city, good day to all. DeGotti SPY REPORT Well, what are you looking at, ARDIVENT? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see SPARROW-BLASTER win a fight and gain 13 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, LORI COLLIN beat AZGUD and AZGUD lost 2 points. You're breakin' my heart. Looks like ARDIVENT has some guts at least, 8-BALL the Duelmaster was this turn's most-challenged warrior. GLOW-ROOM challenged ARDIVENT's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And if variety is the spice of life, ARDIVENT may be getting bland, as 8-BALL stays top dog in the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha! He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's the big D? CYNICAL DELUSIONS was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like FANDILS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's see if anyone's dead or dying. And now a passing thought on a warrior dying young (MINACIOUS of CYNICAL DELUSIONS): You had your chance and now you're dead. Oh well... Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons? What does the ARDIVENT arena have in common with the inns? It's just as comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Well, I've had enough of this drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. I see the crowds are getting restless, I must leave now-- Snide Clemens DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME GLOW-ROOM 3404 12 7 0 93 FANDILS (75) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BREAK POINT 2741 21 13 0 86 CYNICAL DELUSIONS (218) -TEMPTATION 3314 8 5 0 75 INFERNAL LORDS (8) DR STEINBURGER 3442 11 2 0 68 FANDILS (75) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LORI COLLIN 3888 8 5 0 66 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) BECKER COLLIN 3850 14 16 1 61 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME AZGUD 3253 8 12 0 52 INFERNAL LORDS (8) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -IRONWOLF 274 5 1 0 42 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MARY CATHERINE 3459 6 1 2 33 FANDILS (75) -DAVY PRIVETTE 3447 6 1 0 32 FANDILS (75) SMILING MOUNTAIN 3896 3 1 0 29 RUBY DRAGONS (336) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -RYTHYM WIZARD 3357 2 1 0 21 INFERNAL LORDS (8) -UG 271 4 2 1 19 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) -KROKUS 272 4 2 0 19 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) FIIZ 3332 2 4 0 19 INFERNAL LORDS (8) -TARAMON 270 3 3 0 18 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) -WEASEL 273 4 2 0 15 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) DEBRA CONKLIN 3890 3 5 0 14 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) SPARROW-BLASTER 3900 1 0 0 13 CYNICAL DELUSIONS (218) JACINTHE 3892 2 4 0 10 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) COOLIN SCOT 3897 1 3 0 6 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) -EARL & SISSY 3478 0 1 0 1 FANDILS (75) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn. Well, you thunder- clapped my butt, must be the fact that my straps were loose and my skill with the broadsword needs improvement. -- Break Point Infernal Lords -- Well, you displaced me from top team finally. Good luck to 8-Ball and the rest of your team. You will find that Ardivent is an arena of tact, and that you will be challenged far more then avoided. -- Eclipse Bluevalley -- I thought we were going to keep this arena nice and quiet, you know, more of a practice arena. Now it's full of testy young alpha males fighting for supremacy. The odd female warrior as well. Now let's put that practice to good use and hopefully teach a few lessons. Fandils, and Infernal Lords -- It's actually great to see more teams here; this was my first arena as well. -- Eclipse Vecordius -- Good-bye, he couldn't learn squat, leaving Ardivent with and Ex Initiative, and Ad Ex in Dec. Wow, those skills couldn't get you a job at the Jumping Rabbit Pub down the street. -- Eclipse Jacinthe -- Great fight, hope I learned something, not too excited about moving into the mess of veterans with a 3-0 record and one useless skill. Better do some pushups or something and prepare to do a lot of running. -- Minacious Degotti -- You are simply too good to overtake quickly. 7-0-0! Well done, you scoundrel! -- Fandil The Wise Shucks, Becker, you were there and I wanted more. Second visits are always good for my business. -- Dr Steinburger Break Point -- Just the guy I was looking for. Apparently my challenges are useless, but the MUGS must love me! -- Glow-Room (really, truly glowing) Debra Conklin -- Girls just wanna have fun--and I did! -- Mary Catherine 8-Ball -- We salute you and your DM Title (again) and on your call to The Isle. Well deserved, Champ! -- All Us Fandils Fandil -- A salute to you also. Thanks for the congrats of 8-Ball. -- DeGotti Lori Collin -- Um yeah, it must have been the shoes. -- DeGotti Smiling Mountain -- Tough luck kid. I am having some great wins against your manager. -- DeGotti Eclipse -- My winning streak vs. you is allowing me to chip away at your lead in the career top honor spot which, as previously stated, I am coming for. -- DeGotti Dr Steinburger -- I wish you wouldn't step out onto the sands with that truly maniacal gleam in your eye and tell me I need my head amputated! You're not getting any better at this. -- Lori Collin Mary Catherine -- Gosh! I am, like, totally amazed! A skill! Gazebo! -- Debra Conklin P.S. But only one, darn it. Minacious -- Couldn't you just SAY something about it? A threat, maybe, a little menacing posture and so on. I would have SURRENDERED. Honest. -- Jacinthe Dr Steinberger -- I noticed that. -- Becker Collin DeGotti -- I think, though I could be wrong, that if there is no active unchartered team, the Commission Golems pick one at random from the arena's history to fill the slot. -- Leeta, Bluvalley Warriors Lord Protector 8-Ball -- Enjoy your trip to the Isle. Think of it as...ah, I really don't know what would be a good comparison. Think of it as taking a trip to a crowded but cosmopolitan place, eh? -- Arvendon, Baron to the Secretary of Ardivent 24 March 2006 A few notes about e-mailed personals: You may submit personal ads, columns, spotlights, etc. electronically, either via e- mail to ads at reality dot com (which doesn't need any more spam, thank you) or on the web at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules.php?name=Ads. When you submit something, you should get back a receipt from HAL at RSI. If you do NOT get a receipt, your ads may have gone astray (not all e-mail makes it to its destination any more than all snail mail does). If you DO get a receipt, it should, in the body of the message, tell you what arena your stuff was filed in. Check your receipt to make sure your submission made it to the intended destination. Also check to see that everything you sent made it to the same place. Sometimes HAL, who is rather simple-minded in some ways, will send half your stuff to another arena if the name or number of that arena shows up at the beginning of a line. So if the word Ti appears at the beginning of a line halfway through your ads, all the ads after that may end up in Ti, which is closed and doesn't need ads. As a side note, sometimes things move slowly, so don't wait until the last minute to send your ads and all. If they get held up along the way, they may not show up until next turn. Happy writing! -- Ed. LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS GLOW-ROOM slimly lost to 8-BALL in a crowd pleasing 1 minute Challenge Title fight. MINACIOUS was slaughtered by MARY CATHERINE in a 1 minute brutal mismatched fight. JACINTHE was devastated by SMILING MOUNTAIN in a 1 minute one-sided competition.
