Such as, will the footsteps guide us the whole way? And if not, what happens when they stop? He was a little uneasy even thinking those questions, lest the Mythicum or whatever it was should read his mind and bring them about; for sure he wasn't going to say anything like that. Such as, is the whole quest going to take place in this unpopulated limbo with neither day nor night? Stepharoo stopped. Eclipse stopped. The footprints they were following split in front of them and went in two directions. The two gladiators looked at each other in confusion, then at the ground again. There was no doubt about it, from directly in front of them, one line of footprints became two which diverged quickly. Eclipse knelt to study the prints, glad he had taken the time to do so when they began this walk. If one set was not quite the same as the other-- But they were identical in all features he could see, size, shape, depth, even length of stride between one step and the next. So much for thinking ahead. "No difference," he said. "Do we flip a coin?" "It seems so UNFAIR that we should have to choose without any hint at all!" Eclipse opened his mouth to point out that life was unfair, then hesitated. Was unfairness mythic? He didn't think so. "This is a test, too," he said after a moment. He reached across and took both her hands in his. "I think this is a serious test: whether we stay together or split up." "The Magician said we should stay together." "But he was half light, half dark. Do we trust him, or ourselves?" Stepharoo was silent for several minutes. Finally she said, in a quiet voice, "I don't want to go off by myself." "I'm not thrilled about it either," Eclipse admitted. "But I think this is what we have to do. Separate, meet a test on our own, and then come together again up ahead." She sighed. "Yeah, I think you're right, but I still don't like it." "I suppose if it was fun, it wouldn't be a test." "It could be," Stepharoo argued. "I don't see why not!" "It isn't traditional. If this is mythic, we can't defy tradition." "I don't see why not! New is good sometimes." "New myths?" Eclipse said cynically. "Don't delude yourself! We have to do this by the book. You take the high road and I'll take the low--" He slapped his hand over his mouth, but it was too late. The ground in front of them didn't change, it simply was different, as though the two lines of footprints had always gone one up and one down a slope. He shrugged. "Nothing for it, I guess." "I guess not." Stepharoo looked at the path on the left, which angled upward, and sighed. "At least it isn't very steep. See you soon!" She set her foot on the rising ground, shifted her shield, which was blazing like a sun, to the fore, and set out. Eclipse looked at his own path, which plunged downward to the right. "It isn't as steep as it looks, I bet." The angle adjusted a little, though not as much as he'd hoped for. Stepharoo followed her set of footprints around a shoulder of rock--she seemed to be in the mountains now, without warning or preliminary foothills--and came to a stop. She could actually see the person in front of her now, the one making the footprints. It was a tarot Fool, dressed in red and blue motley. Vividly she remembered a tarot card she'd seen once, in which the Fool was about to step off a cliff. No way! There were other renderings, she had heard that, and she wished now that she knew more about them. But they showed...she was sure they showed the silly Fool walking along a road. No cliffs. Walking off a cliff wasn't mythic, it was just stupid. She started walking again, placing each foot with care on the narrow path, shining the light of her shield ahead to make sure there was a path present when her foot came down. Eclipse still had the leafy staff he'd used crossing the chasm, and he put it to use here aid his footing on what was not much of a path. It was a lot steeper than was really safe, if not QUITE vertical, it jinked back and forth along the face of a cliff, and it was graveled with little round pebbles that kept rolling under his feet. Someone WANTED him to fall here. But he was not going to do it. He reached a bend where the path switched back the other way, turned to follow it, and paused. There were no footprints on this length of the path. He looked back. No footprints behind him, either. It hadn't occurred to either of them to check behind them when they were walking along the plain, so he didn't know if this was a point of sinister significance, or if the footprints went away after they'd been passed. There was a fading footprint on the bend of the path, though. He stepped back to it and looked around. "A guide should be a little more obvious," he growled. The footprint slid forward, over the edge of the path, and drifted down, fading as it went. But he could see that there was another one on the angle of the path where it ran below and further down. At least, it was something oblong and glowing, the distance was too great to make out the details. But if that was the only clue he had.... He jumped. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Lucky me. Lucky me! I may graduate yet before someone kills me. And with my abilities, I'm in a hurry! Tournament? We sent one. And old Davy did not glow in his 1-3. I may as well have gone myself. I hear it is Baltimore in July. I sure hope I am immortal by that time. I want outta here. Too much stress. I've taken a shine ("glow"--get it?) to this Duelmaster thing. I sure do hope you all will keep giving it to me. Wish me well. Your Duelmaster Glow-Room SPY REPORT Much has changed in ARDIVENT since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. What's with EUROQ? It actually beat BLUVALLEY WARRIORS' COOLIN SCOT, and walked away with 15 more points from the fight. Major screwup at RUBY DRAGONS. SMILING MOUNTAIN lost 1 points to DAVY PRIVETTE. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe SMILING MOUNTAIN will provide more easy wins... KUNG-FU MASTER was reminded on the sands why GLOW-ROOM is Duelmaster. I suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough! No matter the time or place, men will always duel. ARDIVENT thinks INFERNAL LORDS and their 169-140-10 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up... The bums at FANDILS couldn't face the challenges from INFERNAL LORDS! No excuse for that! Warriors of ARDIVENT unite. You have only your games to lose! Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take note! Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. ARDIVENT is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. I don't want to overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME GLOW-ROOM 3404 14 8 0 100 FANDILS (75) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -BREAK POINT 2741 22 13 0 89 CYNICAL DELUSIONS (218) DR STEINBURGER 3442 14 2 0 81 FANDILS (75) -TEMPTATION 3314 8 5 0 75 INFERNAL LORDS (8) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LORI COLLIN 3888 9 7 0 66 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BECKER COLLIN 3850 14 19 1 62 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -AZGUD 3253 9 13 0 54 INFERNAL LORDS (8) -MARY CATHERINE 3459 7 2 2 52 FANDILS (75) -IRONWOLF 274 5 1 0 42 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) DAVY PRIVETTE 3447 8 1 0 39 FANDILS (75) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME RYTHYM WIZARD 3357 5 1 0 33 INFERNAL LORDS (8) SMILING MOUNTAIN 3896 4 3 0 30 RUBY DRAGONS (336) -SPARROW-BLASTER 3900 2 0 0 28 CYNICAL DELUSIONS (218) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME FIIZ 3332 3 5 0 22 INFERNAL LORDS (8) -UG 271 4 2 1 19 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) -KROKUS 272 4 2 0 19 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) EARL & SISSY 3478 2 1 1 19 FANDILS (75) -TARAMON 270 3 3 0 18 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) DEBRA CONKLIN 3890 3 8 0 17 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) EUROQ 3901 1 1 0 16 INFERNAL LORDS (8) -WEASEL 273 4 2 0 15 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) JACINTHE 3892 2 7 0 13 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) -THORN 3904 1 1 0 12 DEATH (349) COOLIN SCOT 3897 2 5 0 11 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) -GALOOT 3907 1 0 0 7 CYNICAL DELUSIONS (218) -DREAD 3902 1 1 1 5 DEATH (349) -QUAR-RAL 3898 1 0 0 3 CYNICAL DELUSIONS (218) -HELLSPAWN 3903 0 2 0 2 DEATH (349) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn. It's a bit expensive to have all the dents and holes fixed every two weeks. Eclipse is definitely keeping an eye on the repair budget. I'm trying to learn how to attack more and defend less, I've always been a slow learner. -- Break Point Fandil the Wise -- Ok, I suggest you start aiming for the legs and not my warriors' heads and hearts. This is so costly, and it's turning into a blood match every week. Well, prepare for the Blood Feud, it won't be break point though. I'm wondering if holding the title was a jinx, I would check your weapons for poison tips, and I will be checking my warriors' food for suspicious spices. -- Eclipse Degotti -- Well, it seems that I do have a team that will definitely "haunt" you. Literally. I might make up a team of dead warriors, and have them hang out around your stable. -- Eclipse Earl and Sissy -- Where's the Sissy, did Earl come to fight this time, is that why I had to die. -- QUARANTEEN P.S. I was the experiment on the team. Coolin Scot -- Haven't we met already? -- Sparrow EUROQ -- Actually it looks like I ROQ. -- Quar-ral Polite Begger -- You didn't have to be that polite. Man up, and swing that sword a bit. -- Galoot Eclipse -- Glad to see you well after the murderous outlaw attack. Health. Humility. Honor. -- Fandil The Wise DeGotti -- Your call, of course, about Temptation, but I find it hard to comprehend that she is "worse" than the Glowing Duelmaster. -- WOF Fiiz -- I am not! I'm not mean. I'm just dangerous. Live a little on the wild side. -- Mary Catherine Snotman = Wild Cards. Yes. -- Fandil The Wise Becker Collins -- You can do with that hip what the boss did with his. Mea maxima culpa. -- Earl & Sissy Debra -- You sure are a pretty little thing. (wink) -- Davy Privette Break Point -- You are way too good for me. -- Mary Catherine Lori Collin -- Daggone, that was my lucky day. -- Glow-Room Eclipse -- Looks like your team of my nightmares is getting dismantled by Fandil's crew of butchers. -- DeGotti Leeta -- Yeah you are correct it is Snotman who runs Wild Cards. I don't know what I was thinking. -- DeGotti Fandil -- This group of guys is rather horrible. I have one warrior here who has only learned skills in 2 of the 6 possible areas and only 1 of them is really relevant. -- DeGotti Glow-Room -- An, a title shot! Not that I have any great desire to shoot a title. -- Lori Collin P.S. For a neuter golem, you're rather...forward, aren't you? Dr Steinburger -- A stein and a burger? Sounds good to me. -- Becker Collin Rhythm Wizard -- That's peculiar, the way you just, I can't describe it. But your rhythm was wicked! -- Jacinthe Davy Privette -- That's like a private corvette, right? Totally cool! -- Debra Conklin Sparrow-Blaster -- Does it work? I've got some sparrows you could try it on. -- Coolin Scot Eclipse -- Ah...the dog ate your strategy sheets? (sympathetic nod) Dogs are like that. -- Leeta Fandil -- Fair compensation for being preserved in amber for years? -- the Scribe DeGotti -- You're welcome. I'm just about ready to have my guys face off against each other to get some new action. Guess I'd better join a tournament or something...hmmmm, there's a thought. 3 May 2006 All -- I've seen what's on the forum. So I'm prey, am I, Max. You and all your devious buddies will become my prey, even those I thought okay. I don't have to explain anything I do, much like yourselves so bring it on. Feel free to come over to 31 for a thrashing. Oh, by the way, I am also in a new alliance. They tend to share my sentiments about the VC. If they follow me or not, we will see; I'm not at liberty to talk for them. The VC may be on their last stand!!!! -- Blackstorm 6 May 2006 The 2006 Mordanti Alliance Olympics are off to a grand start! With seventeen teams declared, running under eight different flags (not to mention six additional non- Olympic teams present), it is looking to be as tough as any previous Olympiad, if not more! Olympians petitioned the Commission to make an allowance for late entries, and the Commission agreed, and will allow new entrants to partake, as long as they are active by Round 3 (T546, due May 29th). So if you wish to enter, please email your intentions to amicitia@gwi.net with team name, manager name, and affiliation (alliance name or independent), or show up in Mordant (DM-1) on, or before, May 29th and place your declarations in the newsletter!
