Point:

Lord Jerrofil, whose manor was near Point, supplied the horses and--he insisted
on it--an armed escort. "The roads aren't safe," he said. "There's been a lot of
banditry, random violence," he sighed, "and beggars everywhere. I can't remember a
time like this, not here. Down south, during and right after the Rirorni War, but
not here."
"We aren't helpless," Adie told him sharply.
"I'm sure you're not," Jerrofil agreed, "but unless you want to exhaust
yourselves by fighting hourly, you will accept the escort, my lady. Then you might
not have to fight at all; few of the bandits are so desperate--yet--that they will
attack a party of armed men. Also, well, you might need a guide. The earth tremors
have disrupted the roads, and some areas are impassable now."
Fandil raised an eyebrow. "I hadn't realized the tremors were so severe, away
from Krael. The ones three days ago--"
"Were not the only ones, or the worst ones," Jerrofil said. "Things have been
especially bad around Seam, but according to the latest news from travelers, anywhere
within sixty miles of Point and Krael has been hit to some degree. Some buildings
have fallen or are no longer stable, trees have come down here and there, at least
one stream has changed course, but the worst are the bridges. Most of them are
fallen or unsafe."
Adie frowned, one hand going automatically to twist a lock of hair. It was
perhaps forty miles from Point to Aruak City, a day's ride if they met no problems...
though it was well into the morning, and she had hoped for an early start. But it
was beginning to sound like "forty miles over good roads" was too optimistic. Her
mouth set in a stubborn line. If anyone...such as Khaldren, thought such obstacles
would turn her aside, that person was in error. But maybe it would be better if old
Fandil didn't have to undertake what sounded like a wearing journey, and besides,
someone should keep an eye on Cho. She turned to Fandil.
"Don't even think it," the Ardiventi mage said. "I'm coming with you."
Adie looked at him for a minute, then shook her head. Not in denial, but she
knew an immovable object when she saw one. Fandil was coming. So be it.
"And best if we get moving quickly," the old man went on. "We've got a window
here where we can leave unobserved, we should take it."
     "How--?" Jerrofil began.
"Cho is creating a distraction. We don't figure it will hold the Kraelians's
attention for more than an hour, though, so...."
"Yes, of course. I commend you to my Captain of Horse, Tollisker," Lord
Jerrofil said, "and he to you. May you guard each other for safe journeying."
The captain, a young man who looked Convincian rather than Aruaki, nodded
soberly and signaled to his men, Five horsemen led the way out of Point, two fanned
out to the right and two to the left, and another five brought up the rear, Tollisker
riding with the two mages in the middle of the mounted group. "Have you a preferred
route, my lady and lord?"
"Whatever will get us there most quickly," Adie said.
Tollisker looked to the side, though she didn't think he was studying the
overgrown field. After a moment, he looked back and said, "We will begin by trying
the straight road, then, and diverge only when we must."
Cho had only promised Fandil an hour to get clear in, and he was glad of that.
The illusion he had created to distract the Kraelian mages was fighting his control
like a live thing, and he feared it might become one if he fed any more power into
it. That was the trouble with doing any kind of magic in an area where the lines
power and reality were so tangled together: you could never be sure what would
happen.
He forced his unreal leviathan back from the seawall that protected lower Krael
from the lake. Cursed his tendency to build in too much detail; it made the illusion
more convincing, but also gave it more reality from within, and this...thing he had
made was absorbing the chaotic energies around the drowned city and becoming more...
solid. But he was no apprentice to lose his grip on a spell, and he pinned it with
his will and began to dismantle the web of forces that sustained it.
They rode for an hour without problems, though less rapidly than Adie wished.
Tollisker held them to a steady pace, walk and trot and walk again. He said that they
could not count on finding remounts short of Aruak City, therefore they weren't going
to ride these horses into the ground, that the time gained at a gallop would be lost
when they were afoot. Adie acknowledged the sense of that, but she chaffed at the
delay.
Along the Point peninsula, through land which, Tollisker said, was all under the
wardenship of Lord Jerrofil. If so, it spoke well of Jerrofil's stewardship. There
were fields that had been abandoned, one saw them everywhere in recent years, but
fewer than she'd expected. Farmsteads and hamlets occupied and in good condition,
people who paused in their work to watch the troop pass and raised a hand in greeting
and salute to Jerrofil's banner.
"Things are better here than I expected," Fandil said quietly.
Tollisker shrugged. "Most of the people here are Convincian, not Aruaki. And
Point arena is closed. So we haven't been hit as hard as the Clanholds. It's bad
enough, though. You'll see, soon."
"See what?" Adie glanced around, looking for the unexpected or the out-of-
place. But it was much the same as they'd seen all the way from Point, fields and
patches of woods, a farmstead tucked under a hill. Watchers on the hilltops. More
hilltops than farther west, the land rose into a chain of rugged hills at the end of
peninsula, then would fall away into the river valley where Aruak City was located.
"Around the next hill," Tollisker said. He was tense, Adie saw, like a man who
is not only ready for trouble but actually expects it at any moment.
It made her tense, too, and she began gathering sunlight against...whatever need
might arise.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

I am so thrilled! I cannot believe I actually defended the title. Wow! I was
a little lucky to be matched to one of Jehzra's style, but, on the other hand, I
would bet her physicals are far, far better than mine. Just you all wait until I can
reveal them. Just wait.
It is good to see a new team in The Arena Of The Red Sands. I want to
personally welcome Woe To Whitechapel. Glad you are with us in Ardivent.
I want to pay some compliments to my teammates for four of five of us ascending
to stylemaster. Neat! Way to go Davy, Juanita, and Dr.S! And if our slacker, Earl,
would have fought, the likelihood is very good that The Fandils would have held 5
spots. Your bad, Earl.
Life is good. And it is also precarious, especially in Ardivent, The Arena Of
The Red Sands. I pray that I make it unscathed to graduation.
          Hugs and Kisses
          Mary Catherine

                                      SPY REPORT

Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in ARDIVENT this turn, and let's
start with a look at some of the teams. And let's see, FEAR VECTOR fought BANNIR
PARK and gained 18 points and contributed to WOE TO WHITECHAPEL's 2-3-0. EARL has
lost to JACINTHE, falling 15 points, while helping make FANDILS a 4-1-0 turn.
Defending hers title for another turn, MARY CATHERINE kept TUFT-TASTIC!'s warrior,
JHEZRA STEELBLADE, from claiming the throne. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have
heard from unimpeachable sources that The Victory Tavern uses trolls in their stew.
Talk about gristle!
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. I also notice that the CYNICAL
DELUSIONS stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on ARDIVENT, what are you
afraid of? And avoiding CYNICAL DELUSIONS more than any other team we find FANDILS.
ARDIVENT, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged
warrior this turn was FANDILS' warrior DR STEINBURGER. More fighters challenged him
than challenged the Duelmaster!
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. Is it really true that ARDIVENT has
more dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
I like this place, ARDIVENT, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? Always good to rest in ARDIVENT, but never good to wear out
my welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in ARDIVENT again,
farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

Adie -- Yes, indeed; it looks like we split a couple of tufts one turn past. But
this last turn, oh my! I do believe my Fandils are collecting tufts. -- Fandil The
Wise

Lothar -- I will just bet that you or your manager saw that challenge coming so I
feel even that much better for the win. -- Davy Privette

Jhez -- I know the newsletter said "mismatched", but I believe the editor is full of
a whole cart of manure. Salute. -- Mary Catherine

Noble Assassin -- It was a real treat for me to spend a pleasurable fourteen minutes
pulling your teeth one by one. -- Dr Steinburger

Jacinthe -- I was very, very lucky. I hope you taught me a lot. -- Juanita

DeGotti -- Two very solid warriors coming in here? How did you do that? You are not
trading on the black market are you? Our optimum seems to be mediocre-at-best, so
congrats to you. -- WOF

Eclipse -- Your guys sure do like to chugalug! (wink) -- Fandil The Wise

Health. Humility. Honor. -- Fandil The Wise

Wise ol' Fandil -- I have to admit that Spanish Flower has put some sort of spell
over me. She is back in Spain now and I am back in Ardivent. -- DeGotti

Adie -- Like I said last turn the two warriors I have coming in are both better than
Rhythm Wizard ever was. So it's not a total loss. -- DeGotti

Woe to Whitechapel -- Welcome to Ardivent. Arena of the Red Sands! -- DeGotti

Eclipse -- I think you need to discipline your warriors a little more. Two turns in
a row they have been MIA. -- DeGotti

Hairy Bear -- Ptew! That is, like, such a complete mess! Surely you can get, I
don't know, some kind of greasy kid stuff for it? -- Debra Conklin

Fear Vector -- Ouch! You shocked and terrified me there for a minute. Fortunately,
the fight lasted long enough for me to recover my equanimity and win.... -- Caddo
Scot

Juanita -- Oh, thank you! I needed a win today. I'd tell you all about it, but my
manager is cursing something called an expletive-deleted keyboard and won't allow us
to go on at much length. -- Jacinthe

Futstsy -- I'd spell your name correctly, but that key is one that won't work. It's
the pits, apparently, but not, I am glad to say, MY problem. Ha! Anyway, for
similar but not identical reasons to the ones that are keeping our personals short, I
won't be returning in my new carnation until next time. Then, LOOK OUT. -- Ghost of
Kitty Parkin

Bone Mill -- Gotta thank you for that. Seems like it was a point of honor or
something, you know? Well, if you don't know, it's okay, because I'm not real sure
about it myself. Anyway, buy you a beer? -- Bannir Park

Tuvold -- Well, that's easy to fix. Just lose a lot so you don't rise fast. -- Debra
Conklin

All -- I've been on the road for several days and now have an uncooperative keyboard
at the wrong height, so I can't promise an episode in here today. I will if I can,
but Our Ed only waits just so long. Fortunately, she's taking a nap right now, so...
we'll see. -- the Scribe

     HDFA Mission Statement
     "Show me the money!"
This is the battle cry of a newly formed collection of like-minded individuals:
The High Dolla' Free Agent$. We are not a tough guy alliance: No...we offer no
battle without reward. We search for victory and the prizes and accolades that
follow. We are motivated by winning and will freely use whatever means necessary to
obtain our currency. No stuffy rules, no mandates, no constitutions, no leaders,
only a few objectives:
     1) Win as often as possible
     2) Celebrate freely and revel in your victories; the more meaningless the
victory the more we celebrate. Highsiding and chest thumping are encouraged.
Ostentatious endzone celebrations with prop usage are encouraged, regardless of
fines, penalties, suspensions or arrest by local authorities. It is important to let
your opponent know how great you are; more importantly, you must let your own
alliance mates know how great you are.
This is a 1-up alliance, let the performance of your fellow Free Agent$ motivate
you. If a Free Agent wins a TV, win 2; if a Free agent wins a contest, win a more
prestigious one.
