There were rocks at the foot, along the roadside, which was unusual; rocks were carried away promptly they were found to be used in buildings and field walls. And a spill of dirt from a notch in the crest, slumped against the little bluff and sprawled half across the road, which bent around the hill and out of sight. The hollow clop of their horses' hooves was muffled when they reached the little slide, but that was the only change; Tollisker did not stop the troop, or swerve them out to avoid the area. So the dirt wasn't what he was worried about, nor anything immediately at hand. She began to scan what distances she could see. The pasture sloped down from the road opposite the bluff, ending in trees, then rose again in a wooded slope. Must be a stream down there. Either the road around this bend would go along the stream, perhaps in the woods, or cross it. She had been through this area before, though not recently, and remembered stone bridges with shallow arches, streams with cattails along the bank, and sunlight dappling the waters. A stream would make a pleasant change, maybe a place to stop for a quick meal. No, not with Tollisker so tense. They must be approaching a place where trouble was common. She packed her gathered sunlight into a tighter ball, the better to use it as a weapon. A sideways glance at Fandil. He was gripping his staff with both hands, running his fingers along the carving and inlays. He was ready for trouble, too; even his beard seemed tense. Around the curve. She could see that the road crossed valley and stream, but trees near at hand hid the closer parts of it, and the bridge. Still nothing obviously wrong, except for the lack of traffic. And no livestock in these pastures, where there was grass enough even at this season. But that could be due to the general drawing in of the people from anything that simply MIGHT be dangerous. And living so close to risen Krael would be enough to make anyone nervous, she thought, especially those who had no magical ability to understand and defend against the dangers. They came past the last of the screening trees, and she could see that the bridge was out. The span she remembered was broken in the center, leaving a gap of about ten feet. Well, so they'd have to ford the stream, it wasn't likely to be deep. But Tollisker signaled his troop to a halt and waved forward a pair of men. Adie supposed they were scouts, in effect, sent to test for whatever danger was anticipated. Their approach to the bridge was slow, the way they might have approached a sleeping dragon. No, no, not a dragon! They wouldn't have approached such a beast at all; maybe a sleeping bear. They sat their horses well back from the bank and threw things into the water, then went closer and probed with their spears. There was no reaction that the people waiting on the road could see, and one of the scouts waved them forward. "Do we ford the stream?" Fandil asked. "No. Run at the bridge, one at a time, and jump the gap. Safer that way," the young captain said. "There's something in the water, but it might be lower down the stream. We can hope so." "Something," Fandil said, tasting the word. "Such as what?" Adie asked. "And where did it come from?" "Sort of fish-like," Tollisker said, "but," he coughed, embarrassed, "it's got tentacles. And that always means it's bad." "There are perfectly innocent squids and octopuses in the world," Fandil growled. "Not around here. It's a little like a giant catfish, all pale, and the demon said it lived in drowned Krael and was changed there. It came up when the city did, but had to have water, so it moved into this stream." "What demon?" Fandil and Adie asked together. "From Tobir." Tollisker glanced at them, apparently surprised by their surprise. "You know, the arenamaster there. Vashku. He's come up to see my Lord Jerrofil several times, and I hear he's been very helpful." "The arenamaster of Tobir is--?" "Not now, Fandil," Adie said. Her attention was focused on the bridge, where the first riders were forming into a line and beginning their gallop. Everyone in the troop was watching, she saw, some of them with bows drawn. As the first rider cleared the gap, Tollisker suddenly looked around at his men. "Who's watching our flanks and rear?" he demanded. There was a hasty reshuffling of attention, which seemed to satisfy him, and he turned his own gaze back to the bridge. Two more riders were across by now. "You two should go now," he said. "If the Pale Fish isn't here now, it will sense the vibration of our passing and be coming. Get across while you can do it safely." "What about you?" Adie asked. "My job is to be sure you have the best chance to reach Aruak City," the captain said. "Your job is to get there, not to fight the Pale Fish. Go!" Fandil nodded. "He's right, Adie. Let's go!" Point: Master Cho stood with the gladiators Sedalia, Circ, and Gissanniah watching the two Ardiventi gladiators depart. He was not sure if he was glad or sorry to see Stepharoo and Eclipse leave. Sorry not to have their strong arms at his back for the next task, but glad not to be worrying about their mysterious and half-controlled powers. The time to learn the use and control of such powers was, most emphatically, not while in the midst of a battle. Cho turned to Senator Sedalia, who seemed to be the spokesman for the group from Iaye. "Tell me about this map, now," he said. "We found it in the Great Archive on Iaye--the map of the surface streets and structures of Krael, at least. The other one, showing the tunnels, came into our hands mysteriously and was authenticated by the Khalhums Dwarf of Iaye. It shows the tunnels they dug for access while doing some special construction work about... what did he say, a hundred years before the city sank?" Sedalia glanced at his companions for confirmation. Gissanniah nodded. "About that, from what Kegrald Steelhand said." "He also said," Old Doc Circ cut in, "that the King of Krael who ordered the construction would not have known about the tunnels. They were by way of, ah, underground scaffolding, if you will." "Khaldren could have spotted them in a hundred years, if he's such a skilled wizard," Sedalia argued. "We can hardly assume he doesn't know about them!" "I am a skilled wizard," Cho said crisply, "and I cannot detect the tunnels, even knowing they are there. I think it unlikely that Khaldren has discovered them." "If you can't detect them, maybe that means they're all filled in," Sedalia said. "Not necessarily." Everyone turned in surprise to Gissanniah, who seldom spoke unless addressed first. She blushed. "I know a little about dwarves. They have their own arts, and they could have made sure the tunnels would not be found by, well, people they considered unauthorized." "Wouldn't the King of Krael and his chief magician have been authorized?" Circ asked. She shrugged. "What I've been told," she said, "is that dwarves will take just about any commission if it looks interesting, but if they, well, don't quite approve... they do things their own way. Sort of booby-trap it, or something. I don't KNOW this, but I've been told. I think we should risk it, if the tunnels will help us fight Khaldren and Krael." "Which it will do," Circ said. "That map clearly shows that parts of the city have been laid out as an enormous focusing lens for power. And that the secret tunnels will allow us to reach some of the key points and destroy them, thus preventing the lens from working as Khaldren apparently intends." Cho nodded. "I agree. But we will proceed carefully, taking no unnecessary risks, causing no unnecessary destruction. I would prefer to survive our efforts here." "Good point," Sedalia agreed. "Steelhand said the best way to get in was through the Ogre's Tomb--" He turned toward the steep, stone-crowned hill. "And there is our first risk," Cho finished. "I have heard of this Ogre's Tomb, and that the tunnels under it go to many places we might not wish to reach... or be reached from. We will not rush blindly into them." DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Wow! I am so thrilled! I am! My third Duelmaster title! I am so proud, and, I guess I have been very, very lucky. Finally, Fandil The Wise says it is okay to tell y'all about me. He says that I am quite a diamond in the rough, because no one would have thought that a gal like me (I think he means stats and skills and stuff) could have done so well. What have I accomplished? Well, a 16-5-3 record is pretty doggone good, don't you think? And, despite the fact that we Fandils do not like to kill, I have 3 big kills to my credit. (I must be a brute?) I am awfully proud to have claimed 3 Duelmaster crowns--especially in an arena with the likes of stiff competition like Adie and DeGotti and the like. So let me tell you all about me so you can see where all the "greatness" comes from: I have never fought in a tournament. I am mode on skills I am mode everywhere else (good damage, normal endurance) I am a 13-10-13-15-10-16-7 basher I am smart for my wit learning just over 2 skills per fight. I have only adexes in Attack and decise, and an expert init. I was lucky to use my favorite weapon for every fight of my career. But, I only did 22-117-5 with it! (crits/swings/extra value hits) My faves are WH/high/very low, and I learn defensive Well, I did learn 8 defensives making my total to be eight! So why the great record for such a mediocre-at-best design? And where did those three kills (TP, SL, PL) come from? I just do not know. WOF calls it "knack." So there you have it. All about me. Retirement is just in front of me. I think I am going to enjoy it. Good luck to all. Health. Humility. Honor. Mary Catherine, a proud Fandil SPY REPORT Welcome ARDIVENT. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights have I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... Hmmmph! I always thought TUFT-TASTIC! was an over-rated team and they proved it with a 0-0-0! Ya gotta be quick on yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! INFERNAL LORDS is now ranked 4th with a 2-1-0 turn. What's with DEAD DUCK? He actually beat INFERNAL LORDS' MEMNOCK, and walked away with 20 more points from the fight. Major screwup at INFERNAL LORDS. MEMNOCK lost 14 points to DEAD DUCK. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe MEMNOCK will provide more easy wins... I can barely restrain my enthusiam for WILD OATS' outstanding member, Duelmaster BOB THE KNOB. Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting! No matter the time or place, men will always duel. How well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of practive, INFERNAL LORDS! Management must be dealin', as the boys at FANDILS ain't reelin'! INFERNAL LORDS' mad! What do people see in JACINTHE? Hers 5-26-0? BLUVALLEY WARRIORS ain't talkin', but she's got 44 points. There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters to walk away, or not? Some people are wondering why THE BEARS II sent FUZZY (2-0-1) to the Dark Arena. Just be glad you're not on their team. Here's some advice: study your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty. Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. The end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. It is revealing and SURPRISING. -- Fandil The Wise Ardivent -- Sorry about the inconvenience, but it looks like we're going to have to miss this turn (or more). I do really have to shake my head at the commission and my gladiators. They keep giving my team the worst random match-ups, or my warriors keep underperforming severely to their potential. (ie. Lothar) But we'll be back. -- Adie Fandil -- Yes yes, tufts, I know. We have been unfortunate to get poor matches with your DM three times in a row, and Lothar is WAY underperforming. And you know it. Count'em while you got'em. -- Adie DeGotti -- So when are we going to see a full team run from your stable? Not that I've been running all mine recently, but I must say you run more scantily than I. -- Adie P.S. Okay, get your mind out of the gutter after my last sentence. I can't believe I said that. Is that like a sitting duck? -- Caddo Scot Fandil -- Better watch out, there was a giant in the Isles who collected beards, and look what happened to HIM. -- Master Cho Juanita -- Well, *I* didn't teach you about chili-lipstick! -- Jacinthe Mary Catherine -- Our congratulations. -- Bluvalley Warriors P.S.
