Aruak City:

Kennelworth said that everyone going into the arena was watched these days,
counted, identified, and he thought checked magically. Anyone who practiced magic
was identified as such and barred from entry. Or most anyone; he figured the ones
that were allowed in had come to some kind of understanding with Khaldren. Maybe not
allies, but sworn not enemies, at least.
But there was more than one entrance to the arena, even more than one obscure
entrance. Adie knew that, and she was still surprised at the one Kennelworth found
for them. The innkeeper had connections in unexpected places. They were in a wine
merchant's cellar, their presence apparently known only to the mountainous Shew who
moved barrels around.
He moved one now, lifting it off a stand and rolling it to one side. There was
nothing behind it but the wall of the cellar, made of old bricks. Beams framed
panels of bricks and supported the ceiling. The Shew stood next to one of the posts,
face to the wall, and did something that nobody could quite see. One section of
bricks pivoted on its center and opened a narrow passage on either side. "You go in
on this side," he said, pointing to the one on the right where they would be walking
beside the outer face of the bricks. "If you were coming back this way, you'd go on
the other. But you aren't. I daren't leave it open that long, and I've got other
stuff to do, so when you're through, I'm going to close it and put the barrel back.
You have to find your own way out."
"Getting out should be easier," Fandil said. "People leaving the arena aren't
watched as closely as those coming in, after all, they've already paid, so who
cares?"
Adie nodded. Getting out was not a problem for present worry. With a little
luck, there would be nobody watching by the time they were ready to leave. "Where
does this take us?" she asked, gesturing at the doorway.
"Dark Arena level, behind the armory."
"Okay. We're going in now. Close it behind us. And thanks."
The Shew looked down at her. "Something's bad wrong," he said. "Fix it."
                         *** ***** *** ***** ***
Although the Aruak City arena didn't have the financial problems of some, which
forced them to rent out space to all manner of productions when the gladiators
weren't dueling, it was generally quiet between fight days. But not this quiet. It
was like a tomb, and this was the night before the fights. There should be people at
work, checking weapons, training, preparing the Infirmary for a new influx of
patients. Even in this far corner of the structure, it should have been possible to
hear something. Silence.
     Dead silence.
Adie looked at Fandil, uneasy for reasons she could name and for others she
couldn't. The old mage looked back at her, barely visible in the glow-worm light of
the safety strips along the walls. He shrugged and gestured that they should go
forward down this corridor. She took a deep breath and nodded. That's what they
were here for, after all.
The first step was hard, it was as though she was pushing against some soft
resistance. She thought it might be her own reluctance, and the uncertainty born of
the darkness and the silence. But it didn't get easier. The slight sound of her
footsteps was swallowed without an echo. The resistance remained; it felt like they
were pushing into hostile territory. She wished for more light, but they hadn't
brought lanterns, hadn't expected to need them. And she did not want to make a
magical light down here. As well blow trumpets and announce their presence. But she
wished there was some sign of others down here.
Fandil touched her arm and pointed at one of the doors along the corridor. It
looked no different than the others to her, and she had no sense of something special
behind it. But Fandil looked like a dog on point, a cat who's discovered a mousehole
with a mouse in it.
Adie stepped closer, almost on tiptoe, and ran her hands through the air an inch
from the door's surface. Nothing. She glanced a question at her companion.
He stepped up next to her. Immediately his hair stood on end, and even his
beard bristled, as though from the effects of static electricity. He moved his hand
toward the door's handle, and sparks flew between his fingers and the metal.
Adie shook her head. She still felt, sensed, nothing at all, on a mundane or a
magical level. But this door, whatever was behind it, had to be important. She made
a shooing motion to get Fandil back from it. Since it was reacting to him, better
that she should be the one to open it.
He stepped to the side along the narrow corridor, and Adie put her hand on the
cool metal of the latch.

                                      SPY REPORT

Well, what are you looking at, ARDIVENT? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. If this keeps up, BLUVALLEY WARRIORS,
you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 4 in the rankings? RIVER
WARDENS turned their 2-0-0 turn into a 4th place rank in the listings this turn. Any
better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Of course, we're all terribly
impressed to see UP FROM THE SEA win a fight and gain 15 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk,
MIKE MILLER beat ANDERSON and ANDERSON lost 12 points. You're breakin' my heart.
And it's out with the old, in with the new, as JUANITA takes the Title and last
week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks
and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward.
INFERNAL LORDS, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided
team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who led the way in this mass
act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was FANDILS. Ha ha ha ha!
LIBERTINE was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM
insulted or feared? Heh, heh. I guess I can give a little credit to BORN OF THE
DARK of WOE TO WHITECHAPEL for challenging up by 25 to SMASH HIT. BORN OF THE DARK
lost to get 5 points of recognition.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for ARDIVENT's
morgue. More variety. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is
developing these kinds of weapons?
There's got to be a better place in ARDIVENT to get a drink than The Victory
Tavern! Any suggestions? Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city
of ARDIVENT. I feel much better now. Paste this one in your scrapbooks, you'll need
the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens

Gerald Bostock -- Well met.... Apologies for not responding sooner. Real life has
got me down. -- Reaper/Woe To Whitechapel
P.S. That would be the manager type not warrior type.... <grin>

Jacinthe -- Grinding on.... The boss is pleased.... -- Bone Mill
P.S. Thanks for the skills....

Caddo Scot -- Apparently we are joined at the hip.... Small arena syndrome.... -- Up
from the Sea

Jacinthe -- I must have been mighty, mighty lucky to have won that one. I like luck!
-- Bernice

Whew, dodged THAT bullet! Didn't have to write a DM Column! Will Libertine write
one? -- Juanita

But, Annette, I greatly enjoyed winning that one because Tufts are really, really
cool to have won this time of year. -- Juanita (walks over to WOF and says, "Yep.
Another one!")

Uh, Tuvold, was that a Tuft, too? Wow! -- Davy (thinking to himself, "Finally.
Yes!")

Doane -- Today was my day. I earned that one. -- Mike Miller

Libertine -- Now was that nice? Sheesh! -- Earl (feeling the pressure of being the
only Fandil loss this week)

Jhezra -- Nice final victory in the DA. Didn't think you could handle me, huh? --
Juanita

Jhezra -- Nice final victory in the DA. Didn't think you could handle me, huh? --
Earl

Nope, I have no idea where our personals were from last turn. I guess Hal was
hungry. (Can't trust those Golems.) -- Fandil The Wise

Baretta! Welcome back, old friend. We remember those Wardens fondly and well from
the past. Have you seen that old scoundrel, Soultaker, around of late? Now there
was a corker! -- WOF
P.S. We, too, miss Technogeek.

All -- Beware the dangers that the Red Sands bring. Hail Ardivent! Health.
Humility. Honor. -- Fandil The Wise

Debra -- Oh you smooth talker.... -- Bernice

Soultaker/Baretta -- Well I see you became more vocal but didn't fight? I take it
the transition of new Management took longer than expected? -- DeGotti

Baretta -- It is a shame that Technogeek is no longer here! He was always a worthy
adversary! -- DeGotti

All -- I will be on my European adventures after this turn so I will be not be active
for turn 505. I shall be back for turn 506. Good luck to you all! -- DeGotti

Earl -- Gotcha! -- Libertine

Juanita -- Somehow I knew it would come to this. I'm short on FE and my bag of
tricks is almost empty but, I'll give it another go. -- Libertine

Terrance Wycliffe -- That had to hurt. Ah, just curious--what kind of golem are you?
Steel? Spam? Tofu? -- Tater Tot

Caddo Scott -- Only a man who can look me in the eyes will ever know what's behind
them. Of course, he might have to kneel to do so. -- Tater Tot

Debra Conklin -- Methinks Libertine is a bad influence upon your 'mates. -- Tater Tot

Crosseyed Mary -- Keep learning like that and you'll be trouble. -- Smash Hit

Ron Burgundy -- You stomped me like a guy with experience and didn't teach me a
thing. That's... -- Messed Up

Reaper -- My second cousin, EXP 7 (round 9), sends his regards. -- Tater Tot

Caddo Scot -- Wow, were you not feeling well? That seemed far too easy a win.
Better luck next time, my friend! -- Anderson

Smash Hit -- I guess you can't let sleeping dogs lie. Anyway, you got the win and
were kind enough to teach me the riposte skill I've been waiting for. -- Crosseyed
Mary

Reaper -- Gosh, that was quick. How I learned 4 skills in such a brief fight remains
a mystery. Congratulations on the win. -- Bunker

Juanita & Libertine -- Tied for the top, how appropriate given your rivalry. Good
luck you two. -- Adie

Yes, I demolished the Bandit Prince! -- Jhezra

Debra Conklin -- I am thinking I might like that weapon! -- Lothar

Tater Tot -- What? That's it? Sure it's a bad match up, but that was ridiculous.
Was that an enchanted staff you were using? That was bologna. -- Terrence

Davy Privette -- Experience wins that one. Good show. -- Tuvold

Juanita -- I don't get it. Why is dodging so much harder than attacking? Do you
know? Adie always complains that a rating in defense is practically useless against
a similar attack rating. -- Annette

Baretta -- Batting my eyelashes? Flashing my...what? <incredulous look> I am not
such a lady. And if you are inferring that we are the only two women in town and
that those are the qualities of a "lady", then I am the only "lady" in town. -- Adie
P.S. But we definitely agree with you on Technogeek. He is missed.

Cadmus -- Well, if you really want to participate in the 'tuft' thing and actually
have some 'taken' after a gladiators fight, I am a wizard. I can grow back your
gladiators' hair, or even just enough for a tuft to take...for when we're actually
able to take some. <wink> -- Adie

Leeta -- Yes, we found exactly what you fought, the same opening line to the fight
for all my gladiators. And they matched your own. Interesting. -- Adie

Jacinthe -- You like? I spiked my hair, and since I've only lost a couple times, I
still have LOTS of TUFTS! -- Tuvold

Lothar Lightsword -- Well, THAT is name I don't want to play with, and I don't want
to play with your sword, either, Lothario. -- Debra Conklin
P.S. Or is it just a penknife? What I think is, your manager is laughing at you.

Bernice -- Guaranteed to make me fell puny as a gladiatress, but what the heck, I am.
-- Jacinthe

Nivix -- Ouch! Definitely infernal. -- Decker Cobb

Anderson -- What a pair we made. Oog. -- Caddo Scot
P.S. Tell me you have tourney fights, or I'll feel really badly about that loss.

Anchorman -- You're a sailor? Why not go sailing then. I'd rather watch you playing
with an anchor than keep running into a veritable wall of blades at your hands. --
Bannir Park

Tuvold -- You shouldn't let people order you around like that. -- Jacinthe
