With a faint shrug, she pressed with her thumb, heard the latch click open, and pushed. The door moved silently, easily, swinging inward on darkness. Cool, faintly ozone- scented, as though lightning had struck recently and silently. The silence was no different from that of the hallway behind her where Fandil waited, but she sensed a difference. The hall had been empty of life except for the two of them. This room was...not empty. Something waited here. Some predator. Something that thought she was easy prey. She smiled grimly and pushed the door a little farther, stepping through into the darkness. "Something" was mistaken. She would be glad of an enemy she could get her teeth into after so long fighting shadows and phantoms. Fandil watched the door open, and the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. The senses of the body reported nothing, but every magical faculty he had shrieked of danger. He reached out to catch Adie's sleeve; they should go into this room together. She slipped through his fingers, didn't hear his yelp of alarm. He tried not to think, to know, that his fingers had closed on nothing, as though he'd tried to grasp an illusion. She went into the darkness of the room as though passing through a curtain, vanishing from his sight. He stepped forward, intending to follow. And came up short against the blackness within the doorway. It felt like a wall, and like a wall, it would not let him pass. It was a trap, and with a growing certainty he knew, as he searched for some chink in the barrier, that they had been betrayed. Not Kennelworth. Never Kennelworth. The Shew in the wine merchant's cellar? It seemed unlikely, but betrayal always seemed unlikely. Figure it out later. Fandil reined in his anxiety and his rage. This room had been a trap for Adie. There would be one for him. Alertness and balanced judgment, those were his best tools to avoid...whatever came. Or to combat it. And he needed to avoid, to battle and win, if he was to help Adie. Two steps into the darkness Adie paused and swept the space with all her senses. Whatever was waiting here had not reacted. Maybe it couldn't until she got closer. No need to rush into that. She glanced over her shoulder to call Fandil in after her. And froze. The darkness behind was as seamless as what lay ahead. There was no sign of the door she'd come through. She had walked into a trap. That was not the disaster that some might think. To catch her and to hold her were two different things. Since she was already in the trap, there was no need for haste on her part, too late for that. What she needed to do was to think. One hand went automatically to her flame-colored mane and began twisting a lock of hair around a finger, untwisting, twisting again, and tugging thoughtfully. This trap had been aimed specifically at her, it had rejected Fandil. Why? Some difference in the magics they embodied and controlled? She was a mistress of fire magic and a priestess of the sun, Fandil was more of an all-around magician. Was this trap designed to turn her strength, her mastery of fire and light, into a weakness? Hmm. Dared she test it? No, not yet. But how long should, and could, she wait before doing something? Provoking something? Underground near Point: "How does this sound as a plan," Senator Sedalia said, staring up at the magical sigil carved on the ceiling. "We will penetrate to the heart of this place under Krael, marking the power nodes as we pass them. Devise the destruction to work by a remote signal after we're out again--" "GOOD idea!" "But in any case, move quickly," the senator finished. "Right." Circ removed his backpack and began to take out small bottles, half of them round, the other half cubical. He passed the round ones to Gissanniah, the square ones to Sedalia. "These potions are inert by themselves," he said. "Poured together, one bottle of each, onto a double handful of lamb's wool," which he also pulled from his pack, "they turn it into a clay-like mass that can be molded and stuck to walls or ceilings. Ten minutes after mixing, the result becomes rather drastically explosive and should be enough to muck up any magical sigils they're stuck to." Sedalia looked at one of the square bottles dubiously. "I'm not sure I like the sound of this procedure." "You'd be strange if you did," the magician Cho answered. "But it'll work, and everything else either of us can think of would take longer to set up." He unrolled the map and held it against the wall so they could all see it. "We're here." He pointed to a node at the edge of the pattern of tunnels. "This node over here is the central one. Blowing it is necessary but not sufficient to destroy Krael again. For sufficiency, for certainty, we need to take out at least three other nodes as well." He traced a route with his finger. "We'll go in this way and come back out by the same path. I know that isn't the wisest thing, but some the tunnels may be impassable. The ones we've already been through, we know will be open." Under his breath he added, "Probably they'll be open still." "We aren't going to argue," Sedalia said. "Let's do it and get out." DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Davy, Davy Privette, king of the wild frontier. Who said the red sands were so futile? Who said I couldn't make it to the top? I am here. My coonskin cap itches. I want another one. But I'll take a tuft instead. Oops! Sorry. I just did that didn't I? Maybe coonskin caps are harder? Did you see that silly Juanita last time? Thought she was duelmistress, did she? What an illusion! Well, all that is what a cocky, full-of-himself Duelmaster might say. What I really, really want to say is good luck to everyone, and whoopee! I made it! Thank the gods that luck was on my side. Health; humility; honor. Davy Privette SPY REPORT It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty, and despair! WILD OATS after a sorry 0-0-0 might want to consider abandoning the sands and taking up singing the 'Can't fight no more' blues! Nothing works for a team like victory (How's that for a perceptive observation?) as BLUVALLEY WARRIORS can attest... SONS OF TULL posted a nice gain, to come in 2nd. Everybody loves a winner... BLUVALLEY WARRIORS had cause to celebrate, after CADDO SCOT got 22 points by beating TERRENCE WYCLIFF. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, CADDO SCOT was winsome, after beating TERRENCE WYCLIFF and seeing him lose 18 points. NOBLE ASSASSIN found out that ARDIVENT isn't a democracy. You've gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here! So who was the warrior seen charging into immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic problem... A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the little birds cry out?' Any ideas? To quell some nasty rumors, the guys in BLUVALLEY WARRIORS are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need to avoid 'em. As a woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of FANDILS, so did that sorry team shy from BLUVALLEY WARRIORS If challenges were horses, MIKE MILLER could open up a fast food joint! Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors. Questions are being raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the arena. A certain tavern in ARDIVENT would I avoid! Do not think spyreporting in ARDIVENT is the highlight of my life. As the seasons change, and the creatures of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for ARDIVENT? THE DEAD W L K TEAM NAME SLAIN BY TURN Revenge? PERSONAL ADS Ron Burgundy -- Sorry about the blow to the head. I was aiming elsewhere. This crosseyed business really affects my aim! Better luck next time! -- Crosseyed Mary Anchorman -- Wow, by the way you kept going for the throat and head, I'd say you were trying to kill me! Good thing a well-placed blow to the elbow was all it took to bring you down! -- Bunker Born of the Dark -- What a fight! It was an honor to cross swords with such a worthy opponent. I feel fortunate to have claimed victory and I appreciate all the skills you taught me! -- Doane Terrence Wycliff -- We put on quite the show. You might have taught me something, though, for all the blood that was spilled! Congratulations on the hard-earned win. -- Anderson What a mess that last round was. An illusion. A change. The real fights. What we thought were a lot of tufts collected, were a lot of shaved heads. A salute to the Tuft-Tastics. -- Fandil The Wise P.S. Well, we hope this new illusion--a 5-0--holds! If not, here are some more "wrong" personals. Tuvold -- I don't cater to minors. Sorry. -- Juanita So, Annette, how was the new strategy that Adie gave you? Feel free to keep challenging. I love what you do to me. -- Earl (wink) Jhezra -- Braggarts? Us? Are you sure? Jealousy befits you. -- Earl and Juanita Smash Hit -- Why, thanks; I needed a challenge like that. -- Bernice DA Fodder -- Apparently you challenged the wrong person. Thanks for the win, Pal. -- Mike Miller Lothar -- I don't know how I pulled that one out; I suspect luck. I hope it keeps up. And luck to you, too. -- Davy Health. Humility. Honor. May The Red sands remain calm. -- Fandil The Wise Good luck to all at The Face. -- WOF Juanita -- You're sexy and all, but you can't steal my DM spotlight! But feel free to steal something a little closer to me like say...my heart, and I might be able to live with that. -- Tuvold Tuvold -- Since when did you become a romantic? -- Annette (his boss in her shop) Juanita -- Adie says she recognizes that, but sees it flipped. Slashing is easier to parry, harder to dodge. Lunging is easier to dodge, harder to parry. Maybe that's partly why Earl keeps making me look like a dunce. -- Annette Earl -- Have another tuft, there are plenty where that came from. -- Annette, a lady with lots of long sandy blonde hair. Fandil -- Ooo, we missed that! Five styles in the stylemaster list! Great job! -- Adie P.S. Or was that for the false newsletter and Tuvold was really the top Basher! <gasp!> Anderson -- Saw your ad last turn, and you are definitely a good warrior who kept our duel close to the end as well. Well fought! -- Terrence Cadmus -- Too bad. There are enough tufts to go around. And enough good competition to keep trade in them moving without having to snip too much. ;) -- Adie Davy Privette -- Congratulations! Duelmaster! -- Adie Davy Privette -- That was supposed to be MY victory! You will suffer for your luck. -- Lothar Messed Up -- That was messed up! Your match up that is. -- Jhamen P.S. It was a good fight though! WoF -- Unfortunately it wasn't exactly filled with equal parts of fun and romance but both were present on the trip! -- DeGotti Blue Valley Warriors -- Thanks! We did sure enjoy ourselves! -- DeGotti Wow! Strange things abound in turn 504's newsletter! -- DeGotti Bone Mill -- You're supposed to wait till I'm DONE with my bones before grinding them, dammit. -- Jacinthe Melon -- As in "melon-collie baby"? Hmm, no, probably not. -- Decker Cobb Juanita -- (crossly) That was just TOTALLY annoying. -- Debra Conklin Baxter -- Either you have hidden tourney fights, or the handicapper really has it in for you. -- Caddo Scot Fear Vector -- You were veering and vectoring all over the place, and I just couldn't keep up with you. -- Bannir Park Bearnice -- It never works, though. -- Debra Conklin Anderson -- Some days, you just can't tell. Better to sleep in. -- Caddo Scot Fear Vector -- (puzzled pause) Hickory? -- Bannir Park Lothar -- Oh. I figured it was, you know, a nickname or something. Like some people call me Deb. -- Debra Conklin P.S. And you can't make me believe you weren't thinking things. I can tell. Earl -- Did you WANT "virginal"?
