"This is the heart of the pattern," he said. Old Doc Circ, the alchemist from Iaye, stared upward and pursed his lips in disapproval. "This is a great and deadly folly. To have created this pattern at all--and then to cap it and center it on THIS!" Senator Sedalia snorted. "Folly, I don't doubt, but why are you surprised? Surely you have heard that power corrupts? It does not apply only to politics, you know!" Circ opened his mouth to reply, but Cho cut him short. "You are both correct," he said. "This pattern of power sigils is deadly beyond most constructs, building it was folly, and the folly was quite likely brought on by the blind arrogance induced by the possession of great power." He wiped that away with a gesture. "We are not here to condemn the past but to prevent it poisoning our future." The two gladiators from Iaye glared at each other for a moment longer, then nodded. "True," Sedalia said. "Will destroying this..." he squinted up at the complex of symbols carved on the ceiling, "this installation do the job?" "Destroying this is necessary," Circ muttered, "but I would judge it to be not...sufficient, yes?" He looked now at Cho. As an alchemist, he had some knowledge that bordered on the magic of pure power, but not enough to make definitive statements. "How much more will we need to do?" "Destroying this hub is essential," Cho agreed, "and I think our earlier estimate that simply destroying three more nodes on the way out will probably be enough. But if we can get more than three secondary nodes without taking too much time, we should. The more that's destroyed, the more likely the whole system will collapse." Gissanniah, who had been silent till now, also looked up at the ceiling. "That's awfully high," she pointed out. "Higher than any of the tunnels we've come through. Ten feet, at least. How do we REACH it to set the explosives?" "We'll think of something," Sedalia said. "Perhaps we'll form a human pyramid." This suggestion was greeted with heavy silence, so he added, "Or we could put the explosive on the end of your staff, Cho, and use that to reach the ceiling. Or--" "We'll think of something," Cho said, "but it won't involve using my staff in that way." Turning to Circ, he asked, "This material, when it's been mixed together, how sensitive is it to jolts? You said it becomes unstable after ten minutes, but what about before?" "Hmm." The old alchemist scratched his ear. "You're wondering if we could throw it up, perhaps? Hmm. Yes...there'd be some risk, but not a lot." "Being down here at all is a risk," Cho said. "Tampering with this magical pattern is a risk. Do we have enough of your materials to make two batches for this hub?" "Yes." "Then let's do it. The longer we delay, the greater the chance of something else going wrong." Zorpunt: Adie raised her eyebrows. Zorpunt was said to be the heart of Khaldren's current efforts, Zorpunt and ruined Krael. But all she said was, "If this is a golden tower, I can't see it. No light here." Khaldren laughed. "Quite outspoken, are you not? Within reasonable limits, that can be pleasant in a woman. And now that we have finished with the zone of passage, why...let there be light, since you wish it." Light sprang up around her, candles in sconces on the walls leaping into flame one after another. Many candles, but the light did not improve her surroundings. She was in a stone-walled room, as expected. Bare stone walls, with no windows or doors that she could see when she turned to look around. The room was perhaps ten feet square, but much higher than ten feet, looking up, she could not see the ceiling. It was like being at the bottom of a dry well in a cellar. No glimpse of the sky, and no obvious way out. No amenities, either, beyond the candles themselves: no furniture, no water, no food. "An impressive guest room, in its way," she said, "but it does not encourage return visits." "You will never leave, so return visits do not become an issue." Adie grabbed her temper with both hands. Nothing to gain from arguing, but how she wanted to! No, better let him go on underestimating her, assuming that she was trapped and powerless. Trapped she was, for the moment, but powerless she did not believe. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 286): LIN MINMEI of YAKUZA (Sensei Jan, mgr.) Well, I did it! Duelmaster! Earl The Duelmaster. Has a ring to it! But, I will have to admit some luck to this crown. First, I drew a match with the relatively easy Noble Assassin. And Davy Privette, outgoing Duelmaster, took out Hairy Bear for me, paving the way. Indeed, I owe so much to Davy for this, that I will dedicate the column to him. Here's to you, Davy! So, what can I tell you about Davy Privette? 11(+1)-14(+1)-16-16(+1)-17(+2)-6(+1)-11(+1) Consortium Waste Good Endurance: Great Damage; +3 Attack (all on the roll) Skill Learn Rate = 1.52 (after all those bumps) Thought the SC or BS was his favorite BS 9/52/6 SC 8/30/9 QS 13/80/7 ME 2/17/0 However Faves = MS/Mod/Low (Morningstar?!) Finished with adexes in Attack, Parry, Initiative He is retiring. Good luck Davy! But on to me. What shall I do next time. Perhaps it will be a match with one of the Tuft-Tastic! Bashers--Tuvold or Lothar? If not, it looks like I will be matched with an NPC. I want the tuft. (wink) Oh, yeah. No matter what, I wish fortune, fellowship, and life to all of you gladiating in The Arena Of The Red Sands. We certainly all deserve the latter. Earl, Duelmaster SPY REPORT Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day, I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! He who laughs last didn't get the joke. Speaking of laughing at jokes, observe WOE TO WHITECHAPEL. Last week they got 1-4-0 to drop by 4! Practice pays for BROQUS, who pummelled JUANITA, to pocket 31 points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, BROQUS was winsome, after beating JUANITA and seeing her lose 24 points. Duelmaster EARL from FANDILS is going for the gold, as he challenged TUFT-TASTIC!'s LOTHAR LIGHTSWORD. Ooh, the excitement! In ARDIVENT, nothing is permanent (except Death), and we find ourselves a new Duelmaster, LOTHAR LIGHTSWORD. Word has it one team in ARDIVENT is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life! My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter. But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the mountaintops, so stand the warriors of THE BEARS II, alone and unchallenged. The warriors of THE BEARS II found their efforts at combat frustrated as TUFT-TASTIC! apparently had more important things to do than fight. If challenges were horses, LOTHAR LIGHTSWORD could open up a fast food joint! CADDO SCOT found himself challenged by a warrior 24 below: BAXTER. BAXTER of ERRATA kept his wits as he bested CADDO SCOT. Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors. Ask not for whom the sword slashes; it slashes for thee. Leave me now, you base fools! My fingers tire and I fear my incessant prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable character. Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for ARDIVENT? How could he not have fun with us in basic? Instead he worries about the whole game. Left us hanging and hoping, now nothing.
