Under Krael:
Old Doc Circ insisted that he be the one to throw the mixed explosive against
the ceiling. "This material is of my creation," he said, "and I'm the one who
understands it best. Also, as a youth, I did a certain amount of, ah, throwing
things."
"Relic of a misspent youth?" Senator Sedalia muttered. "I could tell a few
tales of my own--"
"Not now," Cho cut in. "The malign power of this place is affecting us all, in
small and temporary ways now but it will increase with exposure. Let us do this and
get out as quickly as we may."
Sedalia nodded and stepped back.
Circ finished molding the second putty-like mass of explosive and glanced upward
at the carven ceiling. "Any specific spots up there I should aim for?"
"Opposite sides of the inner circle of sigils," Cho said, "but anywhere within
the sigils will do."
"Right, everyone out of the way, start back along the route we laid out," the
old alchemist said.
Each of the others picked up part of Circ's gear--the old man would not need any
encumbrance once he threw the explosives into place and began his own run for
safety--and left. Gissanniah started to coil up the cord they'd followed down into
the maze, then left it. The cord might make it easier for Circ to follow... if he
survived this first stage.
The tunnel seemed narrower than when they'd come down it, the walls closing in,
squeezing them, choking off the air. Gissanniah decided that had to be all in her
mind, she didn't LIKE small closed places under the ground like this, and maybe it
was part of the "small and temporary" effects of the sigils, too, but-- The sound of
footsteps behind her made her jump, and she looked back.
It was Circ, running, and he gestured breathlessly for her to move faster.
"Only ten minutes to get out of here," he reminded her as he caught up.
"If you fall and twist an ankle--"
"Oh. Yes, good point." The old alchemist slowed down just a little. "Or if I
get too winded to run." He grimaced. "It's been a while since I stayed in condition
for the arena every two weeks."
They closed the distance to Sedalia and Cho, who were mixing another wad of
explosive.
"Keep going!" Sedalia barked. "Go on to the next point and start mixing there."
"Right." Gissanniah grabbed the now-wheezing alchemist by the arm and kept
moving along the cord to the next node of the pattern.
While they were mixing there, Sedalia and Cho hurried past. Circ placed the
explosive, and they ran farther upward, passing the senator and Cho again. Another
batch.
"This is the last one," Cho said as he and Sedalia caught up with them. "We
don't dare take longer, things are about to blow." He grimaced. "Too bad we didn't
have Raigavor along, he LIKES blowing things up."
Gissanniah took the wad of chemical-soaked cotton from Circ and pressed it to
the sigil on the ceiling. "Will this be enough?"
"Probably. Almost certainly. Now, RUN!"
Aruak City:
Fandil was reluctant to move on from the doorway where Adie had disappeared. It
seemed like abandoning her, even though there was nothing he could DO there, and he
might find some way to act and help if he continued. Plus there was the job he was
supposed to be doing. Because Adie had disappeared did not lessen the importance of
the job: the blood magic focus had to be deactivated, destroyed if possible. He
wished that Cho hadn't stayed behind in Point.
Ah, but if wishes were horses, all beggars would ride. Better to deal with what
was real here. That he was inside the arena and alone. Perhaps Khaldren or his
lieutenants thought all the danger to them must come from Adie, because her fiery
personality made her the most visible. He would show them that age and cunning had
its uses, too. Fandil flexed the fingers of his free hand, transferred his staff to
that hand, and flexed the fingers of his other hand; ready to work. He extended his
magical senses along the corridor and as far into the adjoining spaces as he could.
No people within his range, which meant nobody close enough to be a problem.
Nobody here in the sub-cellar of the arena, nobody near the stairhead to the next
level up. No... people. But he sensed a mind, at the least an awareness. Perhaps a
golem. On this level, ahead and to his right by thirty yards or so.
That would be a place to start.
Fandil shifted his staff into his left hand and wiped his right hand on his
robe, shifted it back and wiped his left. Maybe he was getting a little old for this
kind of adventure... no, it was just nerves. And he was really worried about Adie.
His mouth twitched, finally curving into a smile. She wouldn't like being considered
a "fragile flower of femininity," though. She could take care of herself. Better to
worry about what he was going to find.
He reached a cross-corridor and paused. The Awareness, golem or whatever, was
down this way. He ran over a few spells in his mind, just checking lightly to make
sure they were ready, the way a warrior might check to make sure his sword was ready
to hand. Power moved here, seething just under the surface of physical reality,
spinning slowly toward the Awareness. That probably meant that the presence he
sensed was the collector-concentrator-transmitter of the gathered blood-power, or
something placed to guard it.
He turned to the right and moved down the narrow corridor, counting his paces to
block out the tension.
SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly ARDIVENT games. Former top team FANDILS was unseated
this week as TUFT-TASTIC! moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with a 2-3-0
record for the round. BUNKER caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission
as he skillfully bested BIG DAVE DIODE and was awarded 23 points in recognition. In
one of the week's more notable duels, BUNKER put down BIG DAVE DIODE, causing it to
lose 16 points of recognition in the process. As is fitting, the most sought after
warrior on the challenge boards this week was none other than Duelmaster LOTHAR
LIGHTSWORD himself. The city has turned out in honor of REAGAN, for with its arena
victory it may now lay claim to the highest position in the city! No confirmation,
but my sources claim that the top team has gained their position using magical aids.
Charmed weapons perhaps?
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. ARDIVENT, city of gladiators!
Mighty among the names of thy guilds is SONS OF TULL, a guild shunned and avoided by
many in the weekly duels. Apparently the stalwarts of WOE TO WHITECHAPEL are
catching the bulk of jests down at the challenging board for their large share of the
avoids.
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the
miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in ARDIVENT. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must I
keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari
await me! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a
maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Well well, it's been a while, folks. I was at Gencon, catching up with the good RSI
folks, and I decided to stop by & see what was happening in Ardivent. Lo and behold,
the Wise old Fandil was back, and so was Adie, and Poppa Bear... It seems it is time
for me to return as well. It's good to be back home. :D -- Technogeek
Good to see you here, also. -- Temp Ed
Bernice -- Sorry about that belly hit. I was aiming for your arm. Sometimes I get a
little carried away. -- Bunker
Bunker Betty -- Darn my dodgy ankle! I thought I had you until that ankle gave out
on me. Of course, the fact that you hacked it with a scimitar might have something
to do with it. -- Doane
Can't imagine why.
Melon -- I do apologize for the vital hits. I was aiming for your arm. My comrade,
Bunker, and I seem to have a problem holding back from time to time. -- Anderson
Decker Cobb -- That last spear thrust to my 'assets' might leave a mark. What will
my fans think? -- Crosseyed Mary
Fans think? This is news to me.
Degotti -- My thanks for the welcome. I would like to think this arena will become
an off-turn turn from my travails in Riztab. And as for your last salutation...hey,
needs do, but we're as easy going as they come. -- Jondeaux, it's pronounced "John
Doe"
Fandil -- Finally I get a rare win over one of your warriors! -- DeGotti
Adie -- Have you had Papa Bear challenge you in this arena? I see that you avoided
him the most last turn! -- DeGotti
Adie -- Ahh! I do believe that the hair styling products are what's freaking out Ole
Souly! We all know how folically challenged he is! -- DeGotti
Bone Mill -- Nice challenge and an even better win for you! -- DeGotti
Nivix -- Heck. You're infernally successful, I'll say that for you. Ouch. -- Bannir
Park
Baxter -- You're an error, all right, and the error involved was in letting you on
the field at all. Drat. -- Caddo Scot
P.S. That was really embarrassing. Try not to do it again.
Annette Teverly -- You call that a tan? Not by whole inches, it isn't! -- Debra
Conklin
P.S. But it's a good beginning.
Mike Miller -- You seemed like such an ordinary guy, and then you hit me! -- Jacinthe
Crosseyed Mary -- (with approval) YOU aren't anybody's son! And as long as you keep
your eyes closed, you're quite the looker, eh? -- Decker Cobb
Jhamen -- Yes, I know, but specific though it is, for swords, it's the norm. Many of
those substances you named don't even exist in this universe. -- Decker Cobb
