Zorpunt (probably):

Adie schooled herself to patience, not a natural reaction for her to this kind
of trap. She had known when she stepped through the doorway back in Aruak City that
there was a trap involved, and that it was aimed at her. But sometimes--this was one
of the times--it was necessary to accept the danger in order to close with the enemy.
To that point, her plan had worked. Sort of. She was here, wherever "here" was.
Probably Zorpunt. Probably near Khaldren, her enemy. She couldn't SEE him yet, but
she could hear him. Bastard! Did he expect her to tremble with fear and, she
fumbled for an image, flushing as much with anger as embarrassment, was she supposed
to throw herself upon his non-existent mercy, become his concubine or whatever, in
order to save her life?
She grabbed her temper again before it got away.
Khaldren was doing something, she could feel magic moving nearby. What was he--
? Damn. A shield closed around her, binding her ability to cast spells. It was
always a mistake to let temper cloud her reactions, she KNEW that. But sometimes she
just couldn't help it.
Did he think she would be helpless without magic? Was HE helpless without
magic? She herself... she was no gladiator, but she had been around them for a long
time, she trained them-- Okay, only the basics were "hands-on" for her, but she was
NOT a helpless potential victim. True, a woman was generally not as strong as a man,
but there were exceptions. Okay, she wasn't one of the exceptions. But it wasn't
entirely a question of brute strength, skill also made a difference, and she had
hopes that Khaldren, a man who had depended on magic for centuries, would be lacking
in that skill.
She made a complete turn to examine the walls of her prison again. Again, there
was nothing to see that she could use. So far. Maybe the flame of the candles, she
had an affinity for fire, after all. But she was careful not to look at them, lest
Khaldren be alerted. It was all she could do not to tap her foot impatiently.
Seduction, rape, whatever it was he planned, why didn't he get ON with it? She
needed to foil it and be done. She had things to do!

Aruak City:

Fandil faced the door and took a deep breath. He had faced many perils in a
long and active life, and this was probably not the worst, but it was the one he
faced now. Who would have thought he'd encounter a dangerous golem underneath Aruak
City's arena. Yes, okay, he had expected to find it here, or he wouldn't have come.
Sometimes he found himself so annoying with that little voice that came along and
corrected extravagant statements, even when they were made in the privacy of his own
mind. If that was a sign of age, he could do without it just fine, and thank you
very much!
He shook his head and reached forward, running his hand through the air an inch
short of the closed door. A definite tingle of magic, and with those uncanny lights
behind it, shining through around the edges, what else could he expect. He was
dawdling. Hesitating. Hovering here with an indecisiveness unlike his normal self.
Ah. A spell of avoidance, something of that kind. He snorted. They only worked if
you didn't realize they were present.
He screwed his determination up to the point of action and opened the door.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Wow, my first Duelmaster! I first played this game back in the late 80's for a few
turns until the allowance was spent and finally came back this spring. The timing of
this accolade is impeccable as I attended a Tull concert this month! That, together
with my dumb luck, has brought me to this landmark accomplishment in the game. I
hope this isn't my last hurrah and that Bunker continues to hold or vie for the title
over the coming weeks. I had a few goals coming into this game and the only one that
remains is to graduate a warrior. By my reckoning Bunker has at least seven more
turns before he will be eligible, so as long as he can survive the next several
months, I think all my goals will be met.

Let me tell you the tales of your life
of your love and the cut of the knife.
The tireless oppression, the wisdom instilled
the desire to kill or be killed.

Gerald Bostock (Manager, Sons of Tull)

Thank you, Ardivent, for granting me this high honor. Thank you for the blood
spilled on the sands, for drinks in the Tavern and the camaraderie that is forged
when steel meets steel.

Bunker

                                      SPY REPORT

It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty,
and despair! The boys at FANDILS left the arena dejected, after being kicked out of
the top spot by DEATHTONGUE. Good show! WOE TO WHITECHAPEL after a sorry 0-0-0
might want to consider abandoning the sands and taking up singing the 'Can't fight no
more' blues! Nothing works for a team like victory (How's that for a perceptive
observation?) as THE ZEN ZONE can attest... Practice pays for DECEPTIVE DELILA, who
pummelled BOOBY, to pocket 23 points. BOOBY certainly had a baffled expression on
his face, after losing to DECEPTIVE DELILA and losing 11 points in the process! The
arena was more crowded than usual this time, as MICK JAGGER faced ARDIVENT's
Duelmaster. In ARDIVENT, nothing is permanent (except Death), and we find ourselves
a new Duelmaster, MICK JAGGER. So who's the team that's been walking into taverns
last week and ordering milk? Sounds like a PR stunt to me.
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Like the noble eagle soaring amongst
the mountaintops, so stand the warriors of INFERNAL LORDS, alone and unchallenged.
The warriors of INFERNAL LORDS found their efforts at combat frustrated as FANDILS
apparently had more important things to do than fight. Everyone is famous for
fifteen minutes, and JUANITA is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't
FANDILS proud!
Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors.
Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen
into an unconscious stupor.
Leave me now, you base fools! Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards fat! Do
not despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir

Congratulations to Sons Of Tull's BUNKER, the new Arena Of The Red Sands Duelmaster.
Kudos! -- Fandil The Wise

Surprisingly, the Earl (9-4-10-15-9-16-21 ST) faves were BA/mod/mod. -- WOF

Cutter -- Did you have to make it sooooooo convincing? Cut that out! -- Mike Miller

Memnock -- I fought my best in that last fight. Still, I thought you would have
turned it on me. The gods were with me. -- Earl

Kung-Fu Master -- That was really no contest. It was your day to fight Ding-Do, I
guess. -- Juanita

Bannir Park -- It took more than I had. Salute. -- Bernice

Booby -- Was that any way to treat a woman? And such a disgusting name like that!?
Well, I never.... -- Shelley

Jondeaux -- I had little to do with the choice of a Morningstar as the fave for Davy
Privette. Were I to have had ANY influence, the selection would assuredly not have
been the MS. Only the whiffle (WF) is worse in my books. -- WOF

Sorry about no ads last turn, I had a cold, and the meds were making me loopy. --
Technogeek

Anchorman -- Someone should tie an anchor around your neck, you speed freak. -- Dave

Mr. Miller -- An exciting fight, for me. :D -- Cutter

Delila -- It was a pleasure to dance with you, my dear. -- Opurt

Jacinthe -- Woooo, ain't no moss on this stone, baby! -- Mick

Shelly -- That was interesting. -- Booby

WoF -- I enjoyed the team history. I found it very interesting how you came up with
the team name! -- DeGotti

Bunker -- Congrats on the throne! Even if you had to beat one of my guys to claim
it! -- DeGotti

Ouch, 0-3 last turn looks like those three have extra practice time to put in! --
DeGotti

Bunker -- You see that marquee? Folks gonna think I'm your assistant in some kind of
magic act or something. Even the boss says it's a funny coincidence, Ha! the
similarity between our names. I wonder. He's not a bad sort. Has his noble, good
side...which he mostly keeps under control. -- Bunker Betty

Sarliamne -- So much for the big time, name in lights, all that. A 4 con just
doesn't cut it in this arena. -- Wanda

Decker Cobb -- Up we go. Love to win but I've seen beneficial loses that didn't hurt
nearly so bad the time the next cycle rolled around. -- Betty

Opurt -- There's names and then there's names...and then there's Opurt. (that's a
name?) You're an original, Opurt. Good job of putting it to me, and keeping me from
putting it to you. Gonna be pulling for you, Opurt...show me your mettle. ...well,
I mean, show someone else your mettle, and I'll watch. -- Deceptive Delila

Damn! What IS it with the Commission? I was perfectly happy as a Ratani two weeks
ago, and now they say I'm an elf? They are insane if they think I'm going to change
my species just to keep their records tidy! -- Jacinthe, elf through and through

Mick Jagger -- So, did YOU suffer a race change, too? -- Jacinthe
P.S. You need liposuction. Your lips are too big.

Nivix -- If I have to become a neuter golem to avoid the "musical races" ratrace, I
think I'll pass. At least no one is hitting us (yet) with a GENDER change. -- Caddo
Scot
P.S. Although if we contracted a sudden case of STYLE change, THAT might be very
interesting indeed!
P.P.S. Not that it's likely to happen. Just pipedreaming here.
P.P.P.S. But in case you wondered, I am NOT a half-elf. Gods, the very idea!

Bernice -- And, just to confuse the issues, we retain our races of last month. What
have we been doing right? Maybe we can bottle it and sell it. -- Bannir Park
P.S. Good try on that match.

Bunker Betty -- (wincing) Nasty little thing, aren't you? -- Decker Cobb

Wanda -- Let me guess: the Evil Inputter was sick, and some idiot stepped in to
attempt (failing abysmally) to fill her shoes. How can anyone read "train SK" for
"train WT"? It's enough to make me gnash my teeth, except that my dentist says it
isn't GOOD for my teeth, so I won't. -- Sarliamne
P.S. But having once been registered as a kyan elf, I'm going to KEEP that, you
hear?

Horrors! We forgot to express our congratulations for Earl! It must have been the
distress of Debra's cataclysmic event. -- Jorja and the Bluvalley Warriors
