Point:
The tavern known as the Ogre's Tomb was an old one, located near the hill of the
same name. Except that the walls were now reinforced with sandbags, it hadn't
changed much. Senator Sedalia drained his tankard and sighed. They made a good brew
here. It was one bright light in a murky situation. He leaned back and looked at
his companions, but mostly he looked at Master Cho. "So, we've sunk Krael, probably
annoying every Historic Preservationist in the Andorian League. What do we do for an
encore?"
"As a group, I think... nothing," the old Adantri said.
Old Doc Circ bristled. "We're concerned citizens and not without skills," the
alchemist said.
Sedalia had been drawing circles on the tabletop with his mug, studying them as
though they would reveal the secrets of the universe. Now he looked up. "I think
he's right, Circ." He held up a hand to stop the automatic protest. "Cho's a
magician--"
"A wizard," Cho growled. "It isn't the same thing at all."
"A wizard, then. And we are gladiators, Lord Protectors, and have other skills.
Which would suit us, I think, for the task of calling on the king."
"Ah." Circ leaned back. "An interesting concept. I have wondered, in between
trying to pull the fangs of a rabid wizard, or magician as the case might be, and
preserve my own life, why the king has been so conspicuously absent in this affair.
Yes. That is something that we could and should do." He glanced at Gissanniah.
The young woman nodded. "Okay, I'm up for that. When do we start?"
"Plans and packing tonight," Sedalia said, "and we get on the road in the
morning."
Aruak City:
Fandil took a deep breath. The procedure outlined by the golem--the way to
destroy it and deprive Khaldren of that power and give the Aruaki a chance to recover
from whatever Khaldren had done to them--was easier than he had expected.
Complicated, a lot of steps that had to be in the right order and the right timing,
but not difficult. He could do this. He would probably die in the doing, but... he
took another deep breath. Could he live with himself if he didn't do? No, he could
not.
So. He ran through it once more with the golem, just to be sure he hadn't
missed anything, and nodded. "Let's do it," he said.
The golem flashed a sequence of lights. Fandil could feel the currents of power
shifting. Another sequence, more shifting. Complex patterns. Changes in balance
within the web of energies. He had the mental image of a sort of hole forming in the
universe. His cue. No time left for hesitation. He gathered his own energies and
sprang into the opening. Metaphorically, physically, either or both.
Arcane dimensions whirled around him. He had an impression of vast hands
shuffling a deck of cards, images of himself as a youth, an old man, as he had been
in his physical prime, as a dead man, of his parents before his conception, of other
selves, his present self being torn apart by the powers he was rousing, all cascaded
through his mind. The last image seemed the more likely to happen. Fandil suspected
that he was being offered a choice, and that it was a test of some kind. But there
was only one choice he could live with and still be himself. Health, humility,
honor--well, except for the health, which was likely to vanish as the golem imploded.
He was aware of the golem waiting without impatience or concern to be destroyed.
Speech seemed to be called for. He said, "I choose as I have chosen. Health,
humility, honor. What I can do here for the good of all, I do. Whatever the price,
I pay it."
Forces that had been orbiting this non-place like comets turned inward, diving
into the center where he held the focus. They would meet in and through him and the
golem.

Notes from the arena champ.
One more time I find myself at the pinnacle of our profession. And one more time I
had to go through Mr. Jagger. This fight was closer than I'd care to admit and I won
thanks in part to Mick's incredibly skinny legs. I mean, have to looked at your
legs, Mick? I think I nicked bone when I grazed you! Anyway, it's good to be here
and I hope to stay for a while.
Let me help you pick up your dead
as the sins of the father are fed
with the blood of the fools
and the thoughts of the wise and
from the pan under your bed.

SPY REPORT
I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. ARDIVENT needs a spyreport." Oh, well. I don't wanna hurt
anybody's feelings or anything, but THE BEARS II really goofed with their 0-0-0. MVP
award for SHELLEY? FANDILS' proud of her after beating BUNKER BETTY and getting 17
points. Talk about yer big time losers! BUNKER BETTY got smashed by SHELLEY, and
lost 15 points! And I was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!)
Oh well, welcome MICK JAGGER. Aren't DEATHTONGUE proud. (Oh, my.) I hear the top
team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters
for PR photos.
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. DEATHTONGUE
was the most avoided team. Is a 1113-792-55 record really that scary? Hhmph! What
kind of warriors are FANDILS? DEATHTONGUE, an easy team to beat if I ever saw one,
can't get them to accept an invitation! Like, is DECKER COBB popular, or what? He
was challenged the most in all of ARDIVENT! He's got a 9-12-0, is that good?
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? How cruel! DEATHTONGUE heartlessly sent his to BOOBY certain fate in
the Dark Arena. Is a 6-7-0 bad or something? Hey you guys, don't you think your
families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really
should stop. Its been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

Gein of Wake 2 -- You are a feisty fellow, are you not? Salute. -- Bernice
Zen Zone -- I am really sorry for causing the death of Inovatin Irene. I did not

Arvendon and Fandette -- I expect and want nothing from the Barony. I am retired and
want nothing ever again to do with dueling. Don't call me; I'll call you. -- Juanita
Ghost of Sarliamne -- I know; I know. I am praying for your health problems.

Good luck to all at The Face. I am personally looking forward to shaking "newcomer"-

Fandil the Wise -- Noooo foolin. Well, while I've had Wastes and Bashers and even
Stikers parry very well with the War Hammer, it was always as a primary weapon.
Admittedly in all my years I'm pretty sure I have never assigned it as an off-hand
weapon...in fact the idea is so off the charts of making sense, I'm flat-out sure I
never assigned it. You know, you might've just opened a whole new finger of fighter

Shelley -- That's a new look for you. I like it. < grin> -- Bunker Betty
Bannir Park -- Park It! -- Delila
Sanderscot -- You beat me right outten the blocks. Bad show old bean. -- Honeycomb
Nivix -- Do you know, if I had been allowed to pick my most FAVORITE fight to have
today, this would NOT have been it. Not even close. (heavy sigh) Well done. --
Jacinthe
Booby -- Silly boy. What did you expect that to accomplish, anyway? Granted, I do
appreciate the win, but all you got out of it was alive and one skill. Getting out
alive is, of course, a Good Thing. -- Decker Cobb
Cutter -- It's a cutting turn of phrase you have there, boy, but I'm no slouch that
way myself. -- Caddo Scot
Deceptive Delila -- Ah, and you WERE, quite the fair deceiver. But when you came at
me with a barber's shears, I knew I was in trouble and Took Steps. -- Bannir Park
Oh, good gods, I'm a seven-foot elf? No wonder I took up gladiating! -- Sanderscot
Honeycomb -- A sweet little thing, aren't you? -- Sanderscot
Shelley -- Ah, the heat of the moment! No telling what might happen then.
Spontaneous combustion, perhaps? -- Jorja
P.S. There are Fandils everywhere? Why didn't someone warn me about this?
Juanita -- Nah, it's a job for rednecks. You're too smooth for a Duelmistress. --
