It has been several cycles since we've been able to give this line of events the
attention it requires. When last seen, Fandil was about to blow himself up in order
to destroy the which allowed the mage Khaldren to drain the Aruaki of their power.
Adie was apparently in captivity to the same power-hungry mage and seeking a way out.
Cho and the gladiators from Iaye have just blown Krael, which served to focus the
power of the Arcanum to Khaldren's use, back into the waters of the Trier and the
past from which Khaldren had drawn it.

Probably Zorpunt:

Adie set the focused point of her powers against the keystone. A sudden thrust,
or steady pressure? She started to weigh factors and options, then shrugged that off
impatiently. She was a fire mage, and all her instincts were to strike quickly and
hard. Instincts, and inclination as well. All her anger and outrage at what
Khaldren had done to the Aruaki rose up in a burning fountain and struck the
keystone. Something responded with a groan, then a roar of counter-pressure.
Adie was blind to everything but the contest of forces within the Arcanum, blind
to the leap of fire from the candles in her prison chamber, flames that soared up
tall as trees to meet the distant roof and set fire to the rafters. She didn't hear
the driving rain with which Khaldren fought back, or the battering waves from the
Trier that hammered the stones of the tower.
But she heard Khaldren's voice, shrieking fury and fear. "What are you DOING?
Don't--you can't--" The voice rose to a scream, joining the scream of the struggling
elements. She had the impression that he wasn't protesting her actions, now. That
someone else had seized his attention by... doing something drastic. Good! A
magician who undertook more projects than he could manage at one time deserved
whatever happened to him. Especially, Khaldren deserved it. Between one breath and
the next, which was all the time she could give to extranious matters, Adie
remembered that Cho and his crew had planned to blow up or otherwise destroy the
ability of ancient Krael to focus power for Khaldren, and that Fandil was searching
for the focusing device said to be hidden under the Aruak City arena so that he could
destroy it. One or the other t\of them must have succeeded. Good! Very good.
The keystone that held together the spell sealing this tower was crumbling under
the pressure of her will. She pushed harder. She could feel the spell cracking.
Feel Khaldren himself cracking as he tried to fight three enemies at once. Her lips
drew back in a predator's grin.

Fandil watched the forces coming together. They seemed to be moving very
slowly. That was illusion, he knew. But it gave him time, too much and too little.
Some people said that older magicians were at an advantage in a suicidal situation,
that having lived longer, they were more willing to go. Not true. Having lived
longer, he knew what he was giving up. Only the knowledge that he was achieving
something for the people here that was of critical importance, and that could not be
accomplished by any less drastic means, made it possible to go on with this. Only
the golem had it easy here, because it truly was a Thing, knowing neither fear nor
loss--
"Not so," the golem said in his mind. "We are together in this place of power,
and what you feel is felt by... myself. I do not understand... self. I do not
understand 'I', only that there is regret that understanding will have no time to
develop. Is this what it is to live?"
     "Yes."
"How do living people endure the knowledge of death and yet continue to live?"
Fandil suppressed an impulse to hysterical laughter. "One day at a time," he
said.
"This 'day'," the golem said. "There is not a time of that length before the
end."
     "True."
"This is unacceptable. There must be time enough to know life."
Fandil had a sense of powers shifting into new courses. "The device you contain
must be destroyed," he said sharply. "Otherwise there are many--thousands of Aruaki-
-who will not have another day of life."
"Understood. The first mission is to end the device. This shall be done. It
is in process. But the self will be preserved. My self. Your self. It can be
done. It is a matter of dimensions."
     "What--"
The forces converged and thought ended in a blossom of power.

A wind rushed into the tower where the stonework had collapsed. Wet, cold,
fresh. Adie took a deep, grateful breath, then glanced over her shoulder as she
became aware of heat behind her. The tower was on fire. Stone doesn't burn, not
easily, at least, but wooden rafters had collapsed into the shaft of the tower and
were burning. And there must have been other flammables, even though she hadn't
noticed them, because the whole whole space was a column of flame. It was, she
realized, HER fire, a spear in her hand and a shield on her arm.
None the less, it would be a good plan to get out of the tower before it
collapsed. Those stone walls weren't hers, after all. She began to clamber over the
tumbled blocks in front of her.

Khaldren stood in the circle which he had made to be the center of his strength,
the focus of all his various sources of power. The focus, now, of chaos and attack.
His network was coming undone around him, and the power he had gathered so carefully
was rushing away in many directions. He was sure he could counter any one of those
attacks, was he not the Great Khaldren? But not all at the same time. These
wretched short-lived people were ganging up on him! It was unfair. They didn't
realize that he could have, would have made their wretched little Alastari into the
core of a glorious kingdom of power!
His resolve hardened. If he could not build his kingdom here, then nobody
would. He had known ingratitude before, and he was prepared to deal with it. The
structures which had gathered power for him were shattered, but he still had a
reserve of stored power. Enough to bring down their petty states around their ears.
He reached for the triggers, then froze as a woman clothed in flame came toward
him through the fire-shot night.

"No!" Adie put all her will to command into that word as she saw Khaldren reach
out to touch a sigil mounted on a stone monolith. The sigil itself was not familiar,
some kind of trigger, she thought, but whatever the mage intended to do with it must
be something she should and would oppose. Some kind of revenge destruction, he would
be the type for that.
She saw him hesitate and turn toward her, eyes wide, saw wrench free and turn
again to his instrument of revenge.
But she was not the type to let him do it. She raised her right hand,
unsurprised by the spear of flame she held, and flung it at him.

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail ARDIVENT! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your
deeds. It seems the training can make the difference, as BLUVALLEY WARRIORS is
pushed out of top team by FANDILS, who came from 2nd with a 3-1-1 this turn. On
their very first turn, TECHNO 8 had a 5-0-1, and with this kind of luck or skill,
should do well. Welcome to ARDIVENT. And let's see, CADDO SCOT fought BROQUS and
gained 23 points and contributed to BLUVALLEY WARRIORS' 1-4-1. SANDERSCOT has lost
to TWINK, falling 13 points, while helping make BLUVALLEY WARRIORS a 1-4-1 turn. Due
to his absence and inability to defend the throne, TUVOLD has lost the title of
Duelmaster. We should ask CADDO SCOT about the thrill of victory, and what being the
new Duelmaster does for a warrior, he's now the one to ask. By the way, was that our
Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at The Seaside Manor?
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. THE ZEN ZONE has cause to stand
tall, as they were ARDIVENT's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a
team to beat. And guess who avoided THE ZEN ZONE stable the most? Believe it or
not, it was FANDILS. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that JACINTHE
from BLUVALLEY WARRIORS was ARDIVENT's most challenged warrior this turn.
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. THE BEARS II made what looks to be a tough decision this turn, as they sent
HAIRY BEAR, with a record of 9-5-0, to HAIRY BEAR death. Farewell, his. This is not
good to see. Why pray tell has HAIRY BEAR been sent to the Dark Arena by THE BEARS
II? And why with a 9-5-0 record?? I guess it was coming sooner or later, INFERNAL
LORDS has lost BROQUS, and ARDIVENT is bound to miss it. For a little while, at
least. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies.
You know who you are; and it's considered rude.
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. Well, I'm burning daylight here in ARDIVENT and I've a long road ahead of
me. Happy Trails. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to paper-- Alarond the
Scribe

3WT-3WL -- Sorry to see you go. The arena needs more like you. -- Fandil The Wise

Betty -- Well, am I a keeper, too? -- Bernice

Sanderscott -- Well, that gave me something positive to cheer about. Thanks! -- Tank

Maggy -- This day was mine. I'll just bet yours is next. Girls just wanna have fun!
-- Sadie

Caddo -- I keep trying. I keep realizing how dumb I am! -- Mike Miller

Hey, Decker; when a gal's ready, SHE'S READY! -- Bernice

Jondeaux -- May I ask whom it was? (The WH wielding TP winner.) It may have been
one of our Consortium allies elsewhere. -- Fandil The wise

Health. Humility. Honor. Life is precious in The Arena Of The Red Sands. -- WOF

All -- Sorry about no PA's last couple turns I have been a bit busy in real life! --
DeGotti

Adie -- Welcome back! And taking the throne is a nice way to mark your return! --
DeGotti

Jacinthe -- Fluttering your pointed ears will get you everywhere with Broqus! --
DeGotti

Gein -- I will gladly take some credit for you winning that TC! Since I'm sure it
was all the skills you learned from my guy that put you over the top! -- DeGotti

Annette Teverly -- I zigged when I should have zagged, but did very respectably in
the limbo/karaoke-yodeling contest later on so the day wasn't a total loss. That was
some goooood yodeling, and limbo keeps me limber. -- Deceptive Delila

Bernice -- The old revolving door gets it's pound o' flesh. -- Betty

Opuurrr....t -- *sigh*...trip 17...<smile>...knew there was something special about
you. They do do resurrection contests, you know...I'll be older. -- D. Delila

Mike Miller -- A hint from an experienced gladiator: a beer before the fight, even a
(shudder) lite beer, is not a good plan. You need all your wits about you. -- Caddo
Scot
P.S. So make it, "Health, humility, honor, and no beer before the fight."

Shelley -- Ma'am, you have to know that I'll be extra careful when facing a two-kill
woman. I wouldn't be out to kill you back, mind, but I *will* be extra careful. --
Bannir Park
P.S. Which is no reason why we couldn't go to dinner later. Pizza?

Tuvold -- Should I go all fluttery at getting a title match? I think not! It's a

not-so-subtle sign from the handicapper that I'm behind on my payments. -- Jacinthe
P.S. There certainly are a lot of your style around here lately. I don't think this
is a good thing. In fact, it's probably a sign of bloody decadence.

Terrence Wycliff -- So, I guess it's true what I hear about you golems: that you
feel neither pain nor remorse. Makes for a good gladiator, I suppose, but I won't go
drinking with you, and no way would I want you to marry my sister. -- Decker Cobb

Tank -- Jorja says I should thank you for that loss, as it makes me "less of a
target." Hah. I would rather have remained undefeated. I guess you can't give me
THAT back, but remember not to defeat me if ever we meet again on the sands. --
Sanderscot

Shelley -- You and/or Fandil have to keep track of yours. I can't even keep track of
mine! -- Jorja

Fandil -- I thought so, hence my determination that I would implode the golem THIS
TIME. It should be here in this newsletter. -- the Scribe

                                 Order of Lost Souls

Where there is a beginning, there is an end. Where there is a whole, there is a
part. Where there is light, there is dark. All these are found to be true and along
with the most important, when something is lost it can always be found.
Many a person has walked this land in one form or another. Some truly believe
that here is there and there is here but who really knows? Among the peoples of this
great land many have felt lost in time and in place. Some have gone as far as to be
lost of soul....
Although most are thought to have been born into this world in a mortal way, no
one can be sure. Life is something they have in a way but a torturous joke to them
in all others. They live in a sense as they are here and now and having mind and
knowledge. They are flesh and blood of one sort of another. They cast a shadow as
all things living do. Blood courses through their veins.
These beings have become wraiths drifting here and there, knowing that they
truly belong nowhere. Searching for that one thing that they seem to be missing or
the one thing in them that puts them beyond others. These people have become masters
of many things as time seems to have no hold. For not even time can find those that
are truly lost. Many of these beings have drifted toward the gladiatorial games. In
the blood and chaos of the arenas something holds them like no other. It's the loss
of something they have never had or something they had so long ago it seems to have
never been. LIFE.
A few of the more shall we say "human" of these beings have settled into many
arenas around the land. The loss of life and the crazed emotions of the arenas
giving them glimpses of things they longed for but seemed incapable of attaining.
A number of these lost ones saw in each other something that might be able to
help the other. They spent many a day traveling to and fro, for what is time to one
who it doesn't touch. The more time they spent together the more they seemed to
change. No one noticed the change in the others but each recognized it in himself.
Years passed and the changes stopped. Each had been changed in different ways but
all felt more whole. A discussion ensued between them. They came to a realization
that in each other they had found parts of themselves that had been missing. Then
came the next thought. If they could find more of like minded lost ones they might
eventually find what they always wanted, their true selves.
The group settled down to think things through. They finally came up with an
idea they all could accept. They would form an organization that through their
arenas through out the land they would seek out other lost ones. If they were of
like mind they would be invited to join the group and seek that special something
they all desired.
This was how it began and how it still is. The Order of Lost Souls was formed
and the search began. The original members numbered six. They were Baphomet,
Blackstorm, Hammer, JGW, Reaper and Wretch. These members of the Order spread their
gladiator stables through out the realm seeking others like them. Through blood and
death they lived through others. One day hoping to live for themselves. For as they
all know what is lost must eventually be found....

CALLING ALL THUGS, BRUTES, OGRES, QUARTER HALF WITS, SHALLOW HALBERD ENTHUSIASTS AND
MAUL RATS: Since the Bashing style has often been maligned in the forums, it is time
to give the style a little tough love with the following concept: An ALL-BASHER
arena. The rules are simple--enter the arena as a rookie basher. That's it. RSI
said I need to get 20 managers on board and I'm about half way there. If you are
interested in taking part, PM me in the forums or email me: chase at accesspr.com
and put D2 in the subject header.

ATTENTION EVERYONE -- In March I am going to do manager lists for all arenas. This
is part of my ongoing and undoubtedly largely futile attempt to get my lists
organized. If you think I might not know who you are or if you think I might and
you'd rather I not share that information, let me know this month! You can e-mail
me at Sue at solberg dash mathews dot com (replacing the at, dash and dot with
appropriate characters. You can send a diplo to The Saint. You can put an ad in
the newsletter. Semaphore doesn't work so well, nor does telepathy. -- The Saint,
