True, there wasn't much to see here. It seemed a limbo-ish type of place. A room, minimally indicated by gray walls, floor, ceiling. No windows. No obvious lighting. Something that might, if you were feeling generous, be called a table and a couple of very basic chairs. Limbo was not unexpected, but he had never imagined it to be furnished. He touched one of the chairs curiously. It didn't feel like any particular type of material, wood or metal or whatever, but it felt solid. Real. Ready to support him. And he definitely wanted to sit down and do some thinking. With a shrug, he sat in the chair, let his hands rest on the table. Okay. He was sitting, and his old bones were glad of that. Now to think. First, was he alive, dead, or something in between? Hmm. Of itself, that probably didn't matter. It was what he could DO that mattered. He had something that certainly seemed to be his familiar body, and until proven otherwise, he would assume that it would function more or less as it always had. He wiggled the fingers of one hand in demonstration of that. He wasn't about to fire off a spell without knowing where he was and what might be affected; that would be irresponsible. But he could sense an Arcanum. Not powerful, but it seemed steady. He sifted through the commoner spells, just looking at the patterns in his mind and not attempting to energize any of them. He could probably cast a spell here. Better not to do so until he had some prupose beyond just "seeing if he could do it." So he was probably as functional as he could expect to be, and maybe more. Fine. Where was he, and could he go somewhere else? "Fancy meeting you here!" Fandil jumped and looked around quickly. Cho was walking toward the table. Questions crowded his thoughts. He picked one. "Where are we?" Cho shrugged and settled into the other chair with a sigh. "Nowhere particular," he said. "Think of it as... time out. And how did you get here?" "That was going to be next question," the Ardiventi mage said, "closely followed by 'how do we leave?' I don't know how I got here." He paused and frowned, searching his memory. "The golem at the arena did something. I think this was meant to be an alternative to dying by implosion. As such, I like it. And you?" "I'm just passing through on my way to somewhere else. This is, um, a short cut." Fandil laughed. He hadn't thought he could laugh right now, but Cho said the damnedest things with a straight face and such a reasonable tone! When he could stop, he asked, "How do I get back to Alastari from here?" "That's, well, Alastari is a strange place to get to because it's so tangled up in multiversal quantum strings, but it shouldn't actually be hard." Cho paused, frowning at nothing. "Are you familiar with the Nexian Gate?" "Certainly. That's a basic transfer point for--" "Good. Fix your mind on the Nexia, close your eyes, and start walking?" "That's all?" "Yes." Cho gestured around at the grayness. "This isn't exactly a 'place', you see. It's more like a state of mind, and a lot harder to reach than Nexia. A lot easier to leave than to arrive here, too." "Good. Somehow I didn't expect it to be simple. Ah... what about you?" "Business Elsewhere," Cho said. "Rather messy. You're well out of it." Zorpunt: Adie put all her will into the spear of flame. It was by the will that it was thrown, not the hand. Whatever wickedness Khaldren intended here, he would not survive to encompass it. A distant part of her mind kept telling her to get her anger under control, but she had held in her long and fully justified anger at what he was doing for too long. Restraint merely let him do more. And she was tired of being restrained. She poured out her wrath without hesitation. Khaldren had gathered the fuel for this fire, let him roast in it. All his stronghold was on fire now, roaring up into the night sky. Everything flammable burned, stones cracked and fell. Bursts of strongly colored flame showed where some spellbook or magical device was consumed. Good! Let them all burn. Let there be nothing left for any other foolish and ambitious mage to find and use. She became aware of someone calling her name and pulled her attention away from the fire. Reluctantly, because it was HER fire, and it was doing HER work of destruction here. She saw Fandil standing well back from the flames and waving to get her attention. She went toward him, then frowned as he backed farther away. "Put out your fires, Adie!" She looked around, then realized he meant the fires with which she was cloaked. She quenched them. Slowly, not because it was difficult but because she... didn't want to? She would not let Khaldren infect her that way! "What happened in Aruak City?" "It's a long story, but the device has been destroyed there," Fandil said. "How about helping the fire-fighters before all Zorpunt burns down?" Iaye: Senator Sedalia dropped his carpetbag on the floor just inside the doorway to the Lenpros guildhouse. To him the muted thump sounded weary. And the gods knew he was weary enough himself, and Old Doc Circ and Gissanniah as well. His manager, who had been sitting in front of the fire with a brandy snifter cradled in his hand, looked up. "How did it go?" Sedalia shook his head. "It didn't go at all," he said. "For two days all we got was a run-around, and flunkies telling us that 'the king is too busy to see you'." He lowered himself into the other chair, glad of the warmth of the fire. It had been foul weather for traveling, rain or snow the whole time. "Finally they told us the king had gone to the Isle 'to observe the tourney' and would not be returning 'for some time'. Pfaugh! What kind of king runs off to the Isle when his people are suffering?" Lenpro raised an eyebrow, firelight reflecting in his eyes. "A king who is courting a popular rebellion," he said. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 293): LORD BYRON of SMITHSONIAN (Curator, mgr.) This is weird. I didn't expect it, somehow. Good try, Borqus. Caddo Scot SPY REPORT Good day, in ARDIVENT a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor. So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. And let's see, SHELLEY fought JACINTHE and gained 15 points and contributed to FANDILS' 2-0-0. DECEPTIVE DELILA has lost to BANNIR PARK, falling 5 points, while helping make THE ZEN ZONE a 3-2-1 turn. NIVIX challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting to dethrone BLUVALLEY WARRIORS' warrior. And not without some honor, NIVIX now claims the title and throne of Duelmaster of ARDIVENT. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Victory Tavern uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle! The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. I also notice that the INFERNAL LORDS stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on ARDIVENT, what are you afraid of? And guess who avoided INFERNAL LORDS stable the most? Believe it or not, it was FANDILS. Anyone surprised? The most challenged warrior this turn was BLUVALLEY WARRIORS' warrior JACINTHE. More fighters challenged her than challenged the Duelmaster! In a brave attempt, GODZILLA from THE BEARS II challenged up 21 points to fight MIKE MILLER from the FANDILS stable. GODZILLA perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was defeated by MIKE MILLER and ended up with 62 recognition points. A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. Congratulations go out to INFERNAL LORDS, with NIVIX revenging a bloodfeud against CADDO SCOT of BLUVALLEY WARRIORS. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude. I like this place, ARDIVENT, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls. Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy.
