Something magical, probably. He put down his beer, took the glass out of Dandy's hand--he didn't want to know what weird concoction was in it--and stood. "We have to get back to the Flower Shoppe," he said. "Fandil may need me." ***** *** ***** *** ***** Fandil was okay. That was a relief, but not entirely unexpected. His brother was tough, and experienced; he would know how to defend himself. Against...whatever that had been. He raised an eyebrow inquiringly. "I don't know either," Fandil said. "Some kind of magical barrier, yes. But whether it's intended to seal up the magical activity of Fratsfa, or block magical communication with somewhere else--Andor, for instance, or what exactly was intended...?" He shrugged. "I don't know who, I don't know why. But I think we need to go to Andor physically and soon." "I thought you were concerned about the safety of Emperor Alonj," Lady Fern said. "We are," Lenpro answered quickly. "But I would think we could leave that in your capable hands, sister." Fern frowned but nodded. "I'll take care of it." Amen-Tei: Senator Sedalia looked at his hands and sighed. The oars had rubbed them into blisters, despite the gloves he'd worn. His back ached. And he loathed the clothing that went with his costume. Would anyone here in Amen-Tei seriously believe that he was an itinerant peddler? At least the gods favored him in one thing, and Senator Dole was no longer resident in this town. He couldn't have fooled Dole for a minute; one senator always knew another. Sedalia had argued with the demon on the Black Ship, Tashkemk, that this masquerade was unnecessary and would be unconvincing, but arguing with demons turned out to be monumentally unproductive. In a human, the senator would have suspected a simple enthusiasm for the theatrical, but did that apply to demons? But the worst was that Tashkemk had insisted that the senator's companion, Gissanniah, remain on the Black Ship as a hostage for his, Sedalia's, performance. Dammit, he had given the demon his WORD. If they couldn't trust him, why employ him on this fool's errand? And when he'd asked what guarantee HE had of the young woman's safety, the demon had just LAUGHED. All of which put the senator in a really bad mood, so that when a dockhand slouched up and sneered at the wretched little boat, skiff, whatever was the proper term, why, he let fly with some harsh language that would have blistered the hide on a rhinoceros. Which, Sedalia pointed out in a calmer afterthought, the dockhand rather resembled--big, ugly, stupid, with a misshapen nose, and a singularly unlovely attitude. It turned out that this was precisely the way one should approach sneering dockhands, and the fellow tethered the vessel to the dock in some appropriate manner--Sedalia didn't want to know the details--and helped unload the cargo. The senator didn't care about most of the cargo. Yes, it was valuable, but it was just stuff, and a man who couldn't pour out wealth to achieve a goal had no business in politics. Still, it wouldn't do to let the dockhand think he had secret agendas, so he asked questions about rental space and then watched closely while the cargo was loaded on a cart, hauled to a sturdy warehouse, and stored in a sealed room. One leather case with a shoulder strap and brass fastenings he kept with him. Cargo dealt with, Sedalia's next goal was a dockside tavern called the Pig's Eye. He had no great hopes of it but found the place cleaner than he'd expected, busy but not raucous. Of course, he had no inherent objection to "raucous," political conventions were always like that. But which of these rather ordinary looking people was his contact? What would a demon's contact look like, anyway? It couldn't be another demon, surely, not here in the open. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 304): GOLDENEYE of BONDAGE (Spawn, mgr.) Once again a Taskmaster sits on the throne. And once again it is because of a random match-up! Are we too spineless to challenge the Duelmaster these days? Or was Shelly such a killer that her mere name was enough to cause hardened gladiators to turn aside? Either way, I am pretty sure that I'll be challenged, and that is how it should be. The throne is not for those unable to take it, or to hold it. But most of all it is not for those who are not willing to bleed for it. And looking down at the Challenger Champions I see a sea of offensives. And that's the way I like it. Any old warrior can dish it out. But it takes a true champion to be able to take some punishment, and persevere to win in the end. Hail Ardivent! Hail the Arena of the Red Sands! SPY REPORT Hail and well met warriors of ARDIVENT! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how this week DEATHTONGUE went 3-2-0 to move up 3 in the rankings. In one of the week's more notable duels, M. CHARDINEE put down BERNICE, causing her to lose 19 points of recognition in the process. The city has turned out in honor of BIG DOPE, for with his arena victory he may now lay claim to the highest position in the city! Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7! Many and various are the arts of battle. In ARDIVENT "art" is a word that has long since passed from the language! My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in ARDIVENT these days is INFERNAL LORDS. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid them. Apparently the stalwarts of FANDILS are catching the bulk of jests down at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after JACINTHE. Watch your back! A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that TANK posted a challenge against the more highly recognized JACINTHE. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand TANK won victory over JACINTHE. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel. I can not but mention with disdain the name of HUMAKT who this week posted a challenge to a warrior a full 12 points below in the rankings. I thought HUMAKT showed great skill and promise when he overcame ABBOL. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his foe's mortality? Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always! If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times already in ARDIVENT. Nice atmosphere you have here! Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BIG DOPE 4074 12 7 0 118 DEATHTONGUE (89) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -ISSARIES 1199 16 9 0 105 THE TASKMASTERS (70) JACINTHE 3892 13 65 0 104 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) TANK 4054 12 5 1 103 FANDILS (75) BLUE KNIGHT 1197 15 11 0 95 THE TASKMASTERS (70) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME IZZCO 4087 15 3 0 88 INFERNAL LORDS (8) BERNICE 3996 20 16 0 85 FANDILS (75) -EUROQ 3901 10 10 2 72 INFERNAL LORDS (8) BUM 4094 8 7 0 70 DEATHTONGUE (89) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -TEMPTATION 3314 10 10 1 65 INFERNAL LORDS (8) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME HUMAKT 1436 5 5 0 55 THE TASKMASTERS (70) SHANAMANDA 4123 6 2 0 53 FANDILS (75) -BOVETTE 4095 8 6 0 49 ODDS BODKINS (362) -IRONWOLF 274 5 1 0 42 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) ABBOL 4080 10 11 0 41 INFERNAL LORDS (8) -HOBNAIL 4118 6 3 0 36 ODDS BODKINS (362) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MUNGO BURKE 4097 7 9 0 34 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BINKLY 4115 7 5 0 33 DEATHTONGUE (89) -ANNA BEATRICE 4124 2 1 0 33 FANDILS (75) NOVE 4139 3 0 0 31 INFERNAL LORDS (8) TANIA PARK 4117 8 4 0 29 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) JENNIMYS COLLIN 4114 6 7 0 25 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MANDIN LORV 4091 2 15 0 21 BLUVALLEY WARRIORS (74) -UG 271 4 2 1 19 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) -KROKUS 272 4 2 0 19 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) -TARAMON 270 3 3 0 18 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) SNORKY 4134 3 2 0 16 DEATHTONGUE (89) -WEASEL 273 4 2 0 15 BARBARIAN HORDE (47) -BOBBIN 4141 1 0 0 12 ODDS BODKINS (362) -SLICK CECILIA 4131 3 2 0 11 ODDS BODKINS (362) MS. Of course, it's the pits to be a mime--I took the first round of training, once--when someone whacks you a mean one and you can't scream or cuss. A mime's life is not easy. -- Jennimys Collin Abbol -- I did NOT try to bury you in the sand. Anyone who was paying attention could realize that. The sand is mostly frozen, and I was just kicking a little loose to improve the footing for the next match. It was a selfless act, really. -- Mungo Burke P.S. But IF you had fallen down, I might've buried you in the sand, I don't say I wouldn't've. You just never know. The Polite Beggar earns no pennies. Not that a penny is much use these days, but still, if you have ENOUGH of them, you can at least buy someone's passing thought. Not this guy, though. -- Mandin Lorv I think "Trustworthy Scribe" is probably a contradiction in terms. I wouldn't trust a one of them to come in out of the rain. -- Tania Park Shelley -- It was a kind thought, but as Jorja says, "Kind thoughts plant no potatoes." Myself I'd rather let the farmers plant the potatoes, and who cares about their thoughts, but that's what she says. Or sometimes that "Kind thoughts butter no parsnips." That one's worse. Have you ever EATEN buttered parsnips? Bleh. -- Jacinthe Hmmm...I'm rather fond of roasted parsnips, but I don't think I've ever buttered 'em. -- Ed. Tank -- I believe the correct comment in this circumstance is "Good fight." I didn't find it so, but this is apparently "sportsmanship." That's managers for you, to THEM it's a sport. To us, it's our lives. Oh, well. -- M. Kingfisher Chardinee Madnin Lorv -- There was no need to kick me after I was down. -- Limpy Clean, Polite Beggar Tania Park -- For a modest fee, I could give you private lessons to improve your performance, stop the announcer from calling you an "amateur." Because, of course, *I* was the master in that match, but being generous, I allowed you to win. It seems to matter so much to you people. -- Findiellisthin, Licensed Financial Scribe Shelly -- Congrats on your ascension, but that was so not the dignified exit that you probably expected. At least you helped me finalize my opening strategy. -- Blue Knight Shanamanda -- You are worse than the Dark Arena, I think I will try there for more wins! -- OW! Izzco -- Heh, pick on the offensives, there are only three of us defensive types anywhere near the top. -- Issaries With three straight wins, and good learns, Humakt is rapidly going from team zero to team hero. -- Blueface DeGotti -- Yep, going to try to get rid of OW! for a third time, they say it's the charm. -- Blueface LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS OW! was butchered by WURM KIN in a crowd pleasing 4 minute gruesome Dark Arena fight.
