Fratsfa:

It was one of the worst parts of the city. Calling it a slum would be an insult
to honest slums elsewhere. Lenpro's first instinct was to hustle the Flower Girl out
of there. How did she even come to know such an area? He glanced sideways at
Sizzling Sunflower. It might be better to ask how she could help finding it.
Sunflower was leaning close to a man, talking earnestly. Persuasively, because
his firm gestures of refusal were becoming uncertain. Very persuasively, because she
finally took him by the arm and brought him over to Lenpro. As he watched them
approach, the manager was impressed with how carefully the stranger did not attempt
to take any liberties with the Flower Girl.
"This is Two-finger Tom," Sunflower said. "He saw what happened, and he'll tell
you what he saw."
"Yeah, well." The man squinted at him, looked around carefully, leaned closer.
His breath was bad. "I seen some of those cat men grab a couple of decent girls.
Dragged 'em off, they did. I reckon that has something bad in mind."
Lenpro resisted the urge to step away from this case of walking halitosis. "We
can't go by what you 'reckon'," he said. "What do you know for sure?"
"That a coupla those Aruaki--" Two-finger Tom spat, narrowly missing Lenpro's
boot, "they grabbed a coupla human girls and dragged them off. Down that way," he
added, jerking his head toward the river. "No telling what they might do to the
girls. Cats. You can't trust 'em."
"Then we'd best go look for the girls." Lenpro glanced around at the crowd that
had gathered. "A group of us are going to look for the girls who were taken," he
said. "A disciplined group, not a mob."
Someone in the back of the crowd laughed. "Sounds to me like a mob--a LYNCH
mob--is what's needed here."
"Yeah, we can start by killing all those beast-men! More beast than man, THEY
are!" someone else yelled. Also someone in the back that Lenpro couldn't see. The
crowd stirred and muttered, some in agreement and some not, but the agreement seemed
to have the upper edge.
"No killing out of hand!" Lenpro shouted back. "That isn't the Andorian Way--"
The first man took up the argument again, his voice dripping contempt. "The
'Andorian Way' is just a pretty toy the elves and beast-lovers came up with to hobble
us honest humans! That 'Andorian Way' isn't worth spit!"
The crowd stirred and muttered. A lot of the mutters seemed to be in agreement
with the hecklers.
"Show yourself!" Lenpro demanded. "If you have courage in your convictions,
step forward and show your face."
The crowd stirred and a man came forward. Was thrust forward, perhaps against
his will, by the people around and behind him. He looked defiant, truculent.
He looked Karnhorn. Lenpro knew that racial stereotyping was often unfair, but
he needed to discredit this man before the crowd became a mob. "Is this the Karnhorn
party line you've been handing out?" he asked, keeping his voice calm, idly curious.
"It sounds like it, and you look like it."
More stirring in the crowd, mutters, a wave of suspicion. If there was a
lynching, this man might be first, and he could see it. "I'm no Kjarran-lover," he
growled. "Don't go putting words in my mouth!"
"Somebody's been putting them there," Lenpro said. "Somebody with his
headquarters in Zuwayza, I'd guess." He held up a hand and stopped the surge of the
crowd--for now, at least. "You didn't want us to wait for facts before lynching
Aruaki, why should we wait for facts before lynching you?"
     "I'm not--!"
Someone threw a stone, Lenpro couldn't see who. It arched up over the heads of
the crowd and struck the possible Karnhorn on the side of the head so that he
staggered and fell, blood running down the side of his face.
The crowd roared and became a mob, maddened and excited by the blood, by having
a target for hostility that had been festering. Lenpro cursed and pushed Sunflower
back. He wanted the heckler for questioning, but he wasn't going to get the man.
The mob would see to that--and maybe that mob had been triggered by his accomplice
who didn't want questions asked. He wanted to go in search of the missing girls, but
he suspected that wasn't going to happen right away, either. The witness, informant,
that Sizzling Sunflower had found was in the thick of the mob.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Well, it seems I remain for another turn. If I can manage one more win, I suppose I
will be moving out of this place. The Fandils have some fine challengers, and Izzco
is always a thorn in the side.

We shall see, I suppose.

Big Dope

                                      SPY REPORT

I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. ARDIVENT needs a spyreport." Oh, well. MVP award for BUM?
DEATHTONGUE's proud of him after beating BLUE KNIGHT and getting 18 points. Talk
about yer big time losers! BLUE KNIGHT got smashed by BUM, and lost 16 points! Oh,
wow, like the Duelmaster must be the most popular guy in all ARDIVENT. He got the
most challenges. (But what about proposals?) Like, BERNICE must be pretty gutsy!
She challenged the Duelmaster from DEATHTONGUE. Does this gal have a death wish or
what! This Duelmaster is like something else! BIG DOPE stopped BERNICE dead in hers
tracks! Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? DEATHTONGUE was ARDIVENT's most
avoided team. Is there some award for that? Is there some deep dark secret why
FANDILS' been avoiding DEATHTONGUE so much? Or is it just that they're too scared?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All ARDIVENT ever talks about is fighting!
Me, I'm more laid back. JENNIMYS COLLIN really fought hard against SNORKY. That'll
teach DEATHTONGUE not to go and kill any of BLUVALLEY WARRIORS' guys again, huh! Hey
you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or
have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. Remember you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out! Later, Debby Tonte

Big Dope -- Nice challenge, Duelmaster. Congratulations. -- Fandil The Wise

Yeah, Big Dope, easy challenge, eh? Why don't you challenge ME? A real warrior. --
Tank

Tank -- That is not The Fandils way! Lighten up. Technogeek might do just that and
you would have another loss. -- WOF

Technogeek -- I am expecting to say "hi" to you in Tempe. I hope we were successful
and had fun. -- Fandil The Wise

Abbol -- I guess I was no match for you. It is a known fact that warriors with
shorter names go longer. I think I will change to Shan. -- Shanamanda

If you can prove this, write an article and start a new Duel 2 myth.

Bum -- I enjoyed that very much. (wink) -- Tank

Blue Knight -- Some of our Fandil Lord Protectors told me they remembered you as a
fine warrior. It was a pleasure to meet you, and on such a lucky day for me.
Welcome home. -- Bernice

Steve -- Oh, no! On my first fight. I didn't mean it, I swear! -- Uncle Bob

     They all say that.

Technogeek and all Deathtongue -- We apologize for the death of your newest, Steve.
Mea Culpa. The Red Sands strike again! May he fight well in that great arena in the
sky. -- Fandil The Wise

DeGotti -- What was a nice guy like you doing visiting the 9th Circle of Hell for
recruits? -- WOF

Mongo Burke -- You are just a sexist creep, you know? -- Shanamanda

Our Fandil The Wise surely has himself into a dangerous quest. (As usual.) But we
are a veteran team, and we can often manage ourselves for a short while in his
absence. -- Bernice (the eldest, and hence, captain)

To all Ardiventians and managers attending The Face -- Good luck. Bring honor and
glory to The Arena of The Red Sands. -- Fandil The Wise

Jachinthe -- The battle gods favored me this day. Perhaps another time. -- Big Dope

Humakt -- Ow ow ow ow.... -- Binkly

Mandiv Lorn -- Um, sorry about that. Perhaps it's for the best though. -- Snorky

They say that a lot, too.

Tank -- I thought tanks were armored.... -- Bum

Uncle Bob -- Rajafraja. My new burner waste gone already ; ;. 8/12/11/16/16/5/16

Fandil -- Glad to see I can amuse you! I don't participate in Tourneys much these
days so I doubt you will see me or any of my guys running about! -- DeGotti

Humkat -- The only thing I minded was the loss! -- Abbol

Funny thing here! I have run maybe 5 PS and even fewer PR in my career and I thought
it would have been much easier to run the PS but alas, the PR is much better and more
fun to run! -- DeGotti

I sure hope Jondeaux finds his way back to the sands of Ardivent soon!

Big Dope -- As if. It's more what you make me feel like than what you are. There
are days when I have a serious struggle persuading myself to get out of bed. --
Jacinthe

     Don't we all.

Snorky -- Just what I did not need to start the week. And from a golem, at that. --
Ghost of Mandin Lorv

The Honest Merchant -- They all SAY that. -- Mungo Burke

Nove -- Your victory, as usual, displays an infernal quality. Or was achieved with
infernal ease, or maybe both. -- Jennimys Collin

Darn. The Ambitious Guard didn't even have the courtesy to LOSE. -- Tania Park

Fandil -- Although Ed.'s comment of last turn could be taken very oddly. -- Jacinthe

Abbol -- Pretty sure, but who can remember that far back? -- Mungo Burke

Izzco -- Much more impressive than the first round! Would you believe that I was
running at 8,7,and 6 OE muring minutes 2 on? Maybe next time I will show you the
good stuff. :-) -- Issaries

Bernice -- ONE hit? Arrrggghh. Must be the experience? Or more likely I was still
sore form all of Big Dope's bombs. Still, good fight. -- Blue Knight

Binkly -- Thanks for the learns! :-) -- Humakt

Abbol -- I am ready when you are, it's not like we won't match up again sooner or
later anyway! -- Humakt

Alas for poor Ms. Cue. 13 wit, 6 will, 21 deftness does not a Piker make. --
Blueface

Bernice the embarrassed -- That is no way to speak to a respectable gentleman like
myself! -- M. Kingfisher Chardinee
