There was more at stake here than his pride, after all. "If we can get to ground on the other side of this ravine and move on up the mountain without being seen, we'll do so. You follow when you can. I don't like to leave you, but...." "Finding and stopping the magician is important," she finished for him, nodding. "Good plan, but don't forget that the hunters have hounds. See you later--I promise!" Fandil saluted her silently, for the stand she was about to make, and also for her youth and innocent certainty that all would work out as she expected. He hoped she was right. One more stare into the darkening woods, an assessment of the sounds of horses and hounds moving through the brush, and then he moved carefully back to the trunk of the tree and around it. There was enough light for him to see Elosjon clinging tensely to a mostly- upright branch. The young mage was white-faced but had managed a mask of calm. "What do we do next?" he asked. "We keep moving," Fandil said, keeping his voice low. "Redbud will deal with these hunters, one way or another. Our job is to get up the mountain and locate this magician." "But--" "She is a trained and capable fighter and has, ahem, other skills that will also aid her in stopping and distracting a party of men. She has her job and we have ours, Elosjon." Fandil edged past him and farther out along the limb. Transferring to the next tree was tricky, but he managed it. He had a spell on the tip of his mind ready to serve as a safety net, but he managed without that. Moved far enough along to stand firmly on a good, thick branch, turned, and looked back. Elosjon was hesitating on the other tree, on the other side of this ravine. Might as well give him a minute or two to summon up his resolve. Fandil squinted to the right and left. A good, deep, steep-sided ravine, and neither end in sight. If it was long enough, the hunters wouldn't even consider trying to go around. Good. A true barrier to pursuit. That there might be hostile forces on this side of the ravine was a problem for later. Ah, here he came now. Mincing steps. Nervous clutchings at any other branches within reach. The boy looked a bit silly, but Fandil was not moved to laugh; he was going forward in the face of obvious fear, which was the best working definition of courage. It wasn't the looks of a thing that mattered, just the substance. Horns and hounds closer now, near the other side of the ravine. An outburst of shouting. Fandil's fingers twitched, but he was nearly certain that any serious magic used here--and it would take that to deal with the hunt magically--would be detectable up the mountain at Mountain Home. If the magician up there was watching, and he'd be a fool not to. Nothing so far had indicated that their opponent was a fool. Coming so close to bringing down the Andorian League required competence and alertness as well as malice and cunning. The loud voices reached a crescendo and stopped. To Fandil, that silence seemed more... thoughtful than ominous. He motioned to Elosjon to hurry, hoping the young mage could see him. Apparently so. Elosjon made it to the farthest tip of the first branch that would support him, or that he believed would support him, and stared across at Fandil. Down at the ravine. It was dark in here under the trees, but a sort of translucent darkness-- that was his trained magical perception, of course. Or something to do with his magical training, he'd never been sure exactly what. The ravine was very deep, and there were sharp rocks in the bottom. It would be a really bad place to fall. The nearest sturdy-looking limb of the other tree was... six feet, at least. Farther away than he was tall, anyway. He would have to step on an unreliably slim branch and then... jump. The prospect was not encouraging. At all. But he couldn't stay here. The old mage was counting on him. Besides, Fandil had done this. He must be at least, well, pretty old, and HE had done it. The young man set his teeth, wiped his hands on his robe one at a time, and reached for the next handhold. The branch quivered and flexed. He tightened his grip and kept going. Moved faster, because he didn't think he could stand it to anticipate any longer. Step, step, jump. Desperate clutch. Scrabble with his feet, drag himself forward. He didn't fall. That was a surprise; he had, he admitted now, expected to fall. But the branch he was on now was as firm as a branch could reasonably be. He pried the fingers of one hand off the twigs they were gripping and dried it on his robe. Took a new, firmer grip and did the same with the other hand. Took a deep breath. His respect for magicians like Fandil, who went adventuring despite their ages, went up a lot. This adventuring stuff wasn't as easy as it looked. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 309): CONCUSSION of CONSANGUINEOUS (Mannequin, mgr.) I can't believe you let a sorry goof like me graduate. 7(+1)/10/14/17/17/11/9 MST Decise, Experts in Attack & Init Short Spear, Mod/Low I'm off to retirement land. See you goons later. Bum SPY REPORT Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the clash and bustle of the weekly ARDIVENT games. Former top team FANDILS was unseated this week as DEATHTONGUE moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with a 3-2-0 record for the round. SNORKY caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as it skillfully bested JENNIMYS COLLIN and was awarded 16 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, SNORKY put down JENNIMYS COLLIN, causing her to lose 9 points of recognition in the process. This time victory fell to the grasp of the usurper. All hail ANNA BEATRICE, Duelmaster of ARDIVENT! Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7! I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when this week's challenge seeking began. FANDILS is feared. This much I can say. Apparently the stalwarts of DEATHTONGUE are catching the bulk of jests down at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after ALF MUSHPIE. Watch your back! Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand ready at your right hand forever! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this! A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by the same thing only once. Our congratulations to Bum. -- Jorja and the Bluvalley Warriors Lord Protector Bum -- Ah, well, I have been delving in the storerooms at the arena and even the attics at the palace, to the extent that I have come down with a raging dust allergy, and I have to tell you that there isn't a lot to offer. Every time I found something GOOD, like a magical sword, either the Arenamistress or the Baron, depending on where I found it, claimed the item for some Greater Purpose. This is amazingly discouraging. I have managed to find (and retain) a, ah, vessel, rather large for a cup although it SAYS on the side that it's a cup, "bestowed in recognition of an amazing carousal." Only gold plated, of course, not solid, but a magician I consulted says that it has some special virtue, though he isn't sure what. He thinks it may have something to do with holding one's liquor--there's a motto on the cup about "holding your liquor"--but whether it is the cup that holds it, or the person who drinks from the cup is uncertain. Still, it IS magical. -- Arvendon, Secretary to the Baron 5 May 09 The Battle Royal V is upon us! Come join one of the original contests that has had some of the games best managers involved in the past. DM 18, Talcama, some consider it to be the crown jewel of the Delarq cities is where this contest will take place. The Battle Royal is intended to be a play as you want, play what you want Delarquan style contest with very few rules. While I'd love to say, "NO AVOIDING" is the only rule (and that wouldn't be too far off), I must spell out situations that can and have occurred and require additional clarification. The advantages of this format: 1) Simple. 2) No penalty for DAs. 3) No restrictions on warriors entered into the contest (baggers, TC mods, etc all welcome) 4) No penalty for not fighting. 5) It isn't a race where 21 wit and favorite learn determine the victor. 6) Losing a warrior (or even your whole team) doesn't eliminate you from contention. 7) It is possible to overcome almost any deficit. And this has been proven, with managers making huge point swings in short periods of time! 8) It is a contest designed to show manager skill rather than warrior ability. There are a few disadvantages: 1) There is no set end. It is possible for this contest to go on indefinitely. In practice, this format has worked very nicely in the past and I expect it will continue to work well. 2) You cannot avoid (But that is part of the fun and the head to head nature of this contest requires this rule.) 3) It encourages bloodshed. 4) Baggers and experienced warriors have an advantage over new warriors. Battle Royal Rules: - Any team in Talcama is eligible to participate. There are no restrictions on warriors (baggers, TC prize modified, etc). However, any warrior that fights for your team is considered in the BR. - Teams may not avoid any other team within the contest. (Note that you may avoid teams outside the contest but you do so at your own risk.) Avoiding a team on the turn they enter the Battle Royal is not considered against the rules (since you couldn't know the team wasn't part of the BR). The suggestion is not to avoid at all. Assur (the contest moderator) gets an avoid report every turn and will catch people avoiding! - Managers may only enter a single team in the contest. - Any manager with more than one team in Talcama may not challenge any other contest warrior with their non contest team(s). The intention is that no advantage can be gained by having multiple teams in the arena. ****Failure to comply with the above rules*** 1st offense: Disqualification from the prize, but you may still participate. 2nd offense: Warning. 3rd offense: Removal from Battle Royal. - If a manager decides to switch teams, his score will start back at 0. This is to prevent a manager from sweeping the contest with several teams of sandbaggers. Can a manager use this clause to go from a negative score to zero? Yes. I realize this is sort of cheating, but I'd rather have a manager start over with a new team than drop out of the contest. Even so, they have to start at 0 and must gain 25 points. - If your warrior loses a contest fight because of an input error and this error is verified by RSI, you will have a point added to your score. The head to head records will remain the same and any points gained by another manager will remain on that manager's record. - As soon as you are announced in the newsletter, you are officially entered into the Battle Royal. Scoring begins on that turn! You are expected to follow the rules that turn and every turn following. Your team may enter any time they wish during the course of the Battle Royal. - If you are exiting the Battle Royal, you are not removed until the turn after your intention is published. You are asked to follow the rules for that turn (either through not avoiding or not running your warriors). Scoring: - Scoring begins the turn your team declares participation. - Scoring continues through the turn your team withdraws. - Score is calculated by: Wins+Kills-Lossses. - Only fights with other B.R. participannts count towards your score, but they count whether they are challenges or random match-ups. - First Manager to 25 points wins! - In event of tie, B.R. continues until one team that has reached 25 points is ahead of all other participants. Disputes: - The attempt has been made to make these rules as complete and bulletproof as possible, but Tripwire will resolve any disputes as fairly as he is capable. Prizes: For the Winner: 6 Months Free Play in Talcama for the winning team (doesn't include tourneys)! One +1 Bonus Potion (up to max for warrior, to be used on a warrior in DM 18)! One Limited Damage Bump Potion (one time use, up to max for stats, used on DM 18 warrior)! One Minor Stat Switch Prize (up to 2 points can be moved from one stat to another stat on a new rollup in DM 18, before adding 14 points. This prize can be used up to 3 months from the contest end. Both points must be used in the same place (can't take one from a speed and one from deftness and add one to wit and will)). One Favorites Knowledge Potion (to be used on a 5+ FE warrior in DM 18). Rename One Dark Arena Creature in DM 18, which will be renamed for 6 Months or until the Ladies decide to return it to the previous name. All potions renaming prizes must be used within 2 turns of the end of the contest. Endurance Award (available to all participants): One +1 Bonus Potion (up to max for warrior, to be used on a warrior in DM 18). To qualify for the Endurance Award you must participate in 90% of the total fights possible over the course of the BR. If you don't have time to make it into the BR by the first turn, there will be a two turn window before the counter will start for new teams. The fights do not have to be BR point scoring fights, just 90% of the total possible participation over the course of the contest! So, if the contest runs 26 turns, there are 130 fights possible. Your team must have 117 fights during those 26 turns to be eligible. All prizes/potions subject to RSI's interpretation of how they are used/implemented. RSI said the faves knowledge must be used on an Inits warrior or higher and set at 5FE or more. Tripwire LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS ALF MUSHPIE bested BINGO LITTLE in a 1 minute Challenge fight.
