Fratsfa, more or less:

"We have to get out of here now," Lenpro said, urging Sizzling Sunflower toward
the gate of this arena. "Even if we can't find the portal to take us back to the
true Fratsfa--"
"Will they let us go?" the Lady Protector asked. She glanced to the side and
saw that Lenpro had his own sword out. Oddly, she'd never thought of him as being a
warrior--he was so old! But he managed gladiators, trained them, and he'd lived a
long time in a world where violence was not uncommon.
"Can they stop us, except by magic?" the manager asked. "And I have a feeling
their half-demon mage will be busy trying to keep control of things now that you've
beaten his--I think the vampire was his enforcer."
"I don't know for certain that the vampire's dead," Sunflower warned. "They're
tricky to kill."
"Doesn't matter," the manager said, steering her to her right. They hurried
down another street, not running, because if you ran, there was always something or
someone who would automatically give chase. "Even if it isn't dead, or what passes
for dead among vampires, it was hurt and won't be up to giving us trouble before we
can get out of here." He swerved to the left into an alley, and she followed.
"Do you know where we're going?" Sunflower asked. "Not that I care much at the
moment, as long as it's 'away'."
"I've got a good idea which way the Portal lies," Lenpro said. "Fandil is the
magician in the family, but there are other kinds of skills."
"If you can find and open the Portal back to Fratsfa--"
"I can find it," Lenpro said. "I'm nearly certain I can find it. But opening
it might present problems. Unless there's someone on hand who can be coerced. I do
coercion from time to time."
     "Good. So do I."
They turned another corner, and Lenpro pointed ahead. An archway of mismatched
stones straddled the way ahead of them, framing grayness. "There's our portal," he
said.

Andor:

Outcast Orchid stared back toward the avenue and the slaughter of the "king" by
out-of-work gladiators. "I don't believe it! Those gladiators were waiting to kill
the king--the golem they thought was the king. How could they do such a thing?"
"You saw how," the man beside her said.
     "Yes, but--"
"Gladiators come all kinds, just like ordinary people," he went on. "Some good,
some bad, and a lot of them on the fence. And this hasn't been a good town for a
gladiator since the arena closed. They were probably so glad to have a job that they
didn't look into it closely."
"You're saying someone paid them to--?"
"Of course." He steered her into an alley just before a troop of mounted guards
rushed past. "Very few people, gladiators or not, are genuine anarchists to kill
what they believe is the king just for... kicks." He paused at the other end of the
alley, looked both ways, and hurried her across another street into an overgrown
park.
"But they must have expected the guards, why didn't they have an escape route
ready?"
"They were most likely told the guards wouldn't be a problem. Don't you see?"
He stopped and turned to face her. "They were set up to kill and to die." He shook
her a little. "Believe it, lady! Lord Korneth doesn't care whose death he ordered,
and you will be a target if anyone noticed and recognized you. Even if no one saw
you at the parade--any gladiator found in Andor today will be marked for death. You
have to get out of the city!"
"And so do you," she answered. "You helped me get away, and someone will have
noticed--someone always notices."
"My life is already forfeit. Gods forgive me, I've been a part of this. But
they will not find my death easily achieved, and that may buy you extra time to
escape--"
"If you want to make amends for whatever it is you've done, better to help FIX
things than just throw your life away," Orchid argued. She glanced around, orienting
herself. "Fratsfa's THAT way." She set out, keeping a firm grip on her companion's
arm. "Come ON."
     "Lady--"
"Don't waste time and breath arguing," she said. "Just come ON. When we get
out of the city, THEN we can argue."

West of Fratsfa:

Elosjon glanced over his shoulder as they left the deserted buildings of
Mountain Home behind them. He had been thrilled when a well-known, deeply respected
magician like Fandil of Ardivent had invited him to help, but the idea of facing a
demonic 'watchdog' chilled him to the bone. He was not skilled enough to deal with
demons, and he knew it. He just didn't want to have to admit it to a master of his
profession. He took a deep breath, coughed at the bite of sulfur in the air, and
squared his shoulders. He would do his best. Surely an experienced magician like
Fandil would understand that his best was all he could do.
But he hoped they wouldn't meet that demonic watchdog.
His mind was so fixed on what he hoped that he didn't notice where he was going
and ran full into Fandil. The old magician was standing in the middle of the
overgrown road, immobile as a tree, staring up the mountain. Elosjon followed the
direction of his gaze.
Fandil was looking at the castle on the ridge above what had been the town.
Studying it. Okay. Elosjon studied it, too. He had only seen it once before, a
long time ago, when he was a kid--well, that might not seem long to someone like
Fandil, but it was a long time ago to him. He didn't remember it clearly. At least,
he didn't remember it looking quite like this. He frowned, trying to figure out what
was different... or wrong. It was a fairly standard Medieval Frafrejan castle.
Central keep, enclosing wall with a lot of pointy little towers along it.... Wasn't
that wall leaning outward a little too much? It looked like a stone wave about to
break over their heads. In fact, for a structure that was at least half a mile away
horizontally, maybe a little farther vertically, it seemed to be looming very much
over their heads. Enough that it would be no surprise if it blocked out the sun.
That had to be a magical effect, didn't it? Even though he'd never heard of one like
that.
"Our enemy is powerful, and heedless of normal safety," Fandil said. His voice
was quiet. "That heedlessness makes him doubly dangerous. And it is crucial that he
be destroyed, or he will destroy not only us, not only the Andorian League, but a
goodly portion of this whole area." The old mage's voice hardened. "He is dabbling
on the edges of Chaos magic."
Elosjon paled. He had traveled some in Alastari as part of his education in
magic, had seen the Smoking Plain near Delarq Tor that was all that remained of a
fertile and populous countryside that had been hit with a blast of Chaos magic five
hundred years ago during the last Chaos War. And he had heard of the Twisted Lands
farther south, where the Chaos War of three and a half millennia ago had centered.
And now someone would do it here? "No! We can't allow that--anything we can do, I
would give my life if that would stop him--" He started up the road to the castle.
Fandil caught his arm. "You may end up doing that, and I may also, but we will
not succeed by rushing straight ahead. This calls for planning and finesse."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Can I possibly do it again? Can I stay alive? Is Lord Protectorship in my near
future? Will the luck of the gods stay in my court? Will The Red Sands remain dry?
These are all things I ponder daily. And to think I was once just a plain
maiden who was interested in fun, fun, fun. Is this fun? It seems more and more
like a chore.
I am honored to win the Title once more. I will do my best to retain it. But
it is getting to be a burden I did not sign up for in my early life. Fandil The Wise
warned me, but ....

Good luck to you all.May you remain safe and sound.
          Anna Beatrice DMV

                                      SPY REPORT

The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon ARDIVENT, for
I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! Say what you will about blind luck and dirty
fighting, but BLUVALLEY WARRIORS will tell you 532-834-14 is nothing to laugh at...
Practice pays for ALF MUSHPIE, who pummelled LILY CATHERINE, to pocket 15 points.
Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, ALF MUSHPIE was winsome, after beating LILY
CATHERINE and seeing her lose 12 points. BINKLY found out that ARDIVENT isn't a
democracy. You've gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here! So who was the warrior
seen charging into immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic
problem...
And how sociable are ARDIVENT's warriors? Come, let us see. To quell some
nasty rumors, the guys in BLUVALLEY WARRIORS are not carrying any incurable diseases.
No need to avoid 'em. The warriors of BLUVALLEY WARRIORS found their efforts at
combat frustrated as FANDILS apparently had more important things to do than fight.
If challenges were horses, MUNGO BURKE could open up a fast food joint!
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Oh hard! that
to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
All good things must come to an end. As the seasons change, and the creatures
of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. Can anything
compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for ARDIVENT? On that giddy note I
take my leave-- Novgorodny Vir

Fandil The Wise

Jennimys -- Well, uh, thanks for the warning, I guess. I'd like to leave a legacy of
good will, but I didn't start with much will. Can I just donate? -- Uncle Bob

Bingo Little -- Old chap, probably old old chap, I am not into the tea and crumpets
thing, but I DO like donuts and milk. After these last two fights, perhaps you
should try a chocolate covered (with whipped filling, of course) and some two
percent? -- Lily Catherine

Health. Humility. Honor. Perhaps the Red Sands are mellowing as they age? -- WOF

Mungo Burke -- My challenge got through and it was a good one. Hurrah! Thanks for
being so patient. -- Uncle Bob

Betty -- I was honored to come out on top in our fight. Girls just wanna have fun.
-- Anna Beatrice

Tania Park -- Third time was charm? How did I do that? I am soooooooooooo lucky! --
Sis

Brother Jerome -- Do your siblings find you as annoying as I do? -- Mungo Burke

Fran Bran -- My momma always told me to have a bran muffin in the morning. Do you
feel muffiny? -- Randell Scot

Sis -- Ugh. Not the day to lean on the "sister" concept with me. -- Tania Park

Alf Mushpie -- That was a very strange experience--I could've SWORN I'd died two
weeks ago and would therefore be unable to fight. I guess I'm glad it didn't happen
to me, though it seems to have happened to a colleague with a similar name in another
arena. -- Jennimys Collin

Lily Catherine -- All I can offer you is buttered muffins, old bean. They're what
I've got. But I can offer them with a goofy smile and a few bad jokes, if that will
help? -- Bingo Little

Sis -- This "so depressed" stuff, do you feel you have Seasonal Affective Disorder...
and refuse to go out in the daylight when there IS any daylight? This is actually a
whole different syndrome, the Sibling Pigheaded Syndrome, which is undeserving of the
least sympathy. -- Tania Park
P.S. How does shopping help? You buy stuff and get home and find you don't have
enough bookshelves for all of it.

Arenamistress Fandette -- Absolutely not, ma'am! I was raised on the principle of
"Never volunteer for anything." -- Randell Scot

So if the Constable IS up to something nefarious, you're just going to let him
get away with it? Where is your public spirit? -- Arenamistress Fandette

There has been a run lately of personals and columns turning up in the wrong
arenas. When you email in something, check and make sure you have the correct
arena number! It's easy for a finger to slip onto the wrong key. When the
receipt comes back, check again to be sure it went where you intended!
