Elosjon looked at it unhappily. "No chance of sneaking up any further," he muttered. "A rabbit, even a mouse, couldn't hide there," Fandil agreed. "But that may not apply to--" Suddenly there was something in front of them. Big as a bear, roughly bear- shaped, standing on the naked hillside and growling. It had impressive teeth and claws, a single eye in the center of its forehead, and it reeked of sulfur, as if anything was needed to underline its demonic origin. It advanced with stiff movements, as though walking was a new skill for it. Elosjon stared at it for several minutes, increasingly indignant. "Is this a joke?" he demanded of the world at large. "If that thing's a genuine demon, I'll--" He paused. On the off chance he was wrong, maybe he shouldn't offer to eat it if it should turn out to be a demon after all. "If that's a demon, I'll be very surprised," he said. "Good save," Fandil murmured. More loudly, he added, "It does have a 'made in haste' air about it. Which doesn't mean it isn't dangerous." "It's practically a GOLEM," the young mage said. Sparks of irritation snapped between his fingers. "True," Fandil agreed. Elosjon shot him a suspicious look. If the old man was laughing at him--! But Fandil's face was smooth and serious. "Do you know the tricks to handling golems?" he asked. Elosjon nodded. "That was an early lesson, will, dealing with simple ones was early. But yes, I know how to handle some complicated ones, too." He paused, reviewing his training; now was not the time to make statements he couldn't back up, and what if this bumbling thing was a golem of demonic origin? Or had elements of the demonic in its construction? Fandil was frowning, studying the 'bear-demon-golem'. "I don't sense anything truly demonic about this," he said finally, "and I suspect that it was made... almost carelessly, to scare away ordinary people who might happen through this area." He looked over at his companion. "I believe you can handle this." Elosjon nodded again, sharply. "Yes, I can." Sparks snapped through his fingers again, and as he brought his hands up, they formed a ball of lightning. The "bear" fixed its one eye on him and made a sound, not a roar, more of... it was almost a whine. He flexed his magical faculty as a musician might flex his fingers before a performance. The "bear" watched closely, making no move to attack or to run away. "Not much of a watchdog," Elosjon said, studying it over his ball of lightning. "Being a watchdog is not in a bear's nature," Fandil replied, "and I think this may have started with a true bear. The magician who made a bear into... this is an abomination. Death is the kindest gift you can give this creature." "Yes." He spread his hands, releasing the ball of energy without further comment. It sped toward the bear golem. Who could have avoided it, the lightning was fast but not so fast as natural lightning. Instead, the creature stood up taller and opened its arms as though to hug the deadly energy. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 317): CONFIDENCE of CONSANGUINEOUS (Mannequin, mgr.) However, you are wise to avoid slashers, I hear they are a sneaky lot. For those interested in such things, here are Bink's vitals: 9/7/11/17/9/10/21, Adv Master attack, Adv Experts Def & rip, Expert parry. He came in with +4 attack, and his favs are fist and low/low. I am most likely to play him in ADM some, as I think he has some long term potential. Tally ho, and have a great holiday season out there! Technogeek SPY REPORT Hail ARDIVENT! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your deeds. And let's see, SHADOW BLADE fought UNCLE BOB and gained 13 points and contributed to SERPENT'S HOLD's 3-0-0. UNCLE BOB has lost to SHADOW BLADE, falling 13 points, while helping make FANDILS a 3-2-0 turn. Well done, ARDIVENT, the Duelmaster was this turn's most challenged warrior. Perhaps BINKLY is not as thrilled, being challenged 4 times. LILY CATHERINE challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting to dethrone DEATHTONGUE's warrior. Defending his title for another turn, BINKLY kept FANDILS' warrior, LILY CATHERINE, from claiming the throne. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Seaside Manor uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle! Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.' Inscrutable, but true. DEATHTONGUE has cause to stand tall, as they were ARDIVENT's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who avoided DEATHTONGUE stable the most? Believe it or not, it was FANDILS. Anyone surprised? A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. Is it really true that ARDIVENT has more dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just thought I'd ask... Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare to fight bravely. Well, I'm burning daylight here in ARDIVENT and I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. Top Team On The Move, the Duelmaster, a Lord protector, and probably a partridge in a pear tree. You are THE MAN and I am avoiding. -- Fandil The Very Wise Binkly, the warrior and Lord protector and Duelmaster -- I KNEW I should fear you. You are just plain better than me. "2 minute mismatched Challenge Title fight" describes it very well. Congrats on the win. You give Ardivent a mighty fine Duelmaster. Good luck in The Big Time. -- Brother Jerome Sabre -- I thank you for the challenge, and feel mighty, mighty lucky to have won. Uh, do you think we could meet for drinks sometime? -- Uncle Bob Mungo Burke -- I always enjoy matches with handsome fellows like you. You were my early Christmas present. (wink) -- Lily Catherine Bingo Little -- When it comes to slashers, I am the one who gets to say "bingo." -- Sis Katerina Collin -- Thanks for being my very first! -- Earl I am getting ready for a BIG, BIG battle in the mountains west of Fratsfa. Please pray for me and Elosjon. (BTW, I just love the writing of the Elosjon character.) -- WOF Thank you. Technogeek -- No more Facebook for you! Get with it, Pal. The Red Sands need your personals. -- Fandil The Wise P.S. I'll just bet that Binkly writes a great going-away DM Column. Woe To Whitechapel -- Long time no see. Welcome back to The Arena Of The Red Sands! -- Fandil The Wise Khisanth -- Did you drag The Barbarians and Woe To Whitechapel back with you? Good job, Pal. -- WOF Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. May the new year be peaceful and prosperous. Hoping to see some of you in Tempe... -- Fandil The Wise and The Consortium Folks Despair -- Indeed... -- Tess Fear Vector -- Yep, put that fear on bucko! -- Betty Ratler -- It seems you dropped a T somewhere. - Snorky Born of the Dark -- Hmm, I heard I was conceived in the dark, but I don't think that's quite the same. -- Fran Everyone hear that Thud?!?! That's Serpents hold returning to reality... 1-4. Uggh Woe to the Whitechapel? -- Woe is me for facing 2 of your gladiators... Well met, sir... -- Khisanth Great turn, Deathtongue!! You seem to have taken control of the Honors section of Ardivent.... Uncle Bob -- My challenge was a diversion so that Shadow could get a shot at the throne... His challenge fell through and I take a severe thumping.... -- Sabre Tess Turbo -- I thought you had me that time... I guess a bit of con can be useful... -- Despair Lily Catherine -- I suppose I should be glad to come out of that fight alive, I seem to recall you've been less gentle with some of my teammates. -- Mungo Burke Sis -- I always knew little sisters were blisters on the universe. -- Bingo Little If this guy is a "Noble Assassin" in the sense that he assassinates nobles, well, okay. If he thinks being an assassin is noble, he's an idiot and probably should be smacked hard upside the head. -- Tania Park P.S. I mean, I really get why the Delarquans call the Andorians hypocrits over this. Shiftyeyed Volunteer? Nothing but a lump of coal and a bundle of switches for him. -- Celia Randell Earl -- Well, I see that it's true, what Jorja says about it being as much the managers as the gladiators that determines the winners. Good fight. -- Katerina Collin Uncle Bob -- Maybe so, but you nudged one of your other markers over a square or you wouldn't have had a straight row, old bean. -- Bingo Little Our congratulations to Binkly. -- Jorja and the Bluvalley Warriors LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS LILY CATHERINE was bested by BINKLY in a 2 minute master's Challenge fight.
