Marci Foote looked from Arvendon, Secretary to the Baron of Ardivent and thus
responsible for distributing "lands" to graduating gladiators, to the property in
front of her, and then back at him. "A 'haunted hat shop'? That isn't... what I
expected."
"Then you haven't thought it through, young lady," Arvendon said sharply. "If
the Baron gave away substantial properties to every gladiator who graduated from
Ardivent's arena, all the property within the boundaries of the Barony would be in
the hands of gladiators by now. And this is unacceptable for several reasons.
First, most of the land belongs to the citizens of the Barony, and not to Baron
himself--"
     "Then why did he OFFER--"
"The Baron did NOT make that offer. The Grey Lady on the Isle made it, and SHE
has no lands here. Secondly, most gladiators don't really want lands, they just like
the IDEA of lands. They leave and seldom--most of them never--return. Indeed, the
Baron has had to declare a law that land which lies abandoned for more than three
years can be reclaimed by the Barony for other disposition--"
"I was coming to that," Marci said. "I seem to remember hearing that one of my
own teammates several years ago was granted this 'hatshop' place."
"That is quite possible." The old man looked at the building and grimaced. In
truth, it looked bad. Long vacant, windows opaque with dust, paint peeling, shingles
missing off the roof.... "As I said, many gladiators go off to the Isle or elsewhere
and never return. This property has stood empty for years, many years. I would be
glad if you cared to take it over as your 'graduation lands' and put it back into
use. As it stands, the place generates no tax revenues--"
"Ah. Taxes. Of course." Marci looked at the building, squinting at it
critically. "In its present condition, the taxes should be... low, I think?"
     "Well...."
"Or I could just refuse it and take the other offer. The fancy sword. Of
course, that generates no taxes at all, does it?"
Arvendon looked like a man who had bitten into a lemon. "Low taxes... perhaps.
First year payable in advance," he added sharply. "In case you are another who goes
away and leaves it empty. The Barony can't be run on a handful of fallen leaves."
It was Marci's turn to grimace. "A handful of fallen leaves" was a local
euphemism for "worthless promises." But she had to admit that he had a point. "I
want to see inside it before I make my decision," she said.
"Of course." Arvendon fished a large iron key out of his belt pouch and handed
it to her. "Look your fill. I'll wait here."
She looked at him sharply. Why would he not want to go in and see the condition
of the building himself? How could he set the tax rate if he didn't know what
repairs it might need?
But he returned her look blandly and indicated his clothing, a Chancery robe in
beige silk with crimson embroidered insignias. "Silk is expensive to clean. I will
wait here."
Marci would have bet... a fair amount that he had some other, more compelling
reason, but she could see she wasn't going to get it from him now. She shrugged,
stepped up to the door, and fitted the key into the lock. It turned with difficulty.
If she DID take this property, the lock would have to be oiled. Or replaced, who
knew how many people had a chance to make copies of the key, after all?
The key turned, and she could hear the tumblers inside the lock falling like a
series of dropped boulders. Haunted. Right.
She pushed open the door and entered.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

I was warned about Long Biggar, so I didn't even bother bringing him water or
giving him good service. And I was not disappointed. He was rude and the tip was
quite memorable, but not in a good way. So here I sit, Duelmistress of Ardivent,
keeping the seat warm until someone worthy takes it away from me.

-- What Water?

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of ARDIVENT! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team THE 27 CLUB was
unseated this week as BLUVALLEY WARRIORS moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top
spot with a 4-1-0 record for the round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always
around the corner! Witness how this week FANDILS went 2-1-0 to move up 4 in the
rankings. Did only my eyes note the 4-1-0 record which BLUVALLEY WARRIORS managed to
post this round? I don't doubt that such a record will draw challengers! THE COOK
MESSED UP caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully
bested MARCI FOOTE and was awarded 17 points in recognition. In one of the week's
more notable duels, JOUBERT KLEE put down KURT COBAIN, causing him to lose 3 points
of recognition in the process. This time victory fell to the grasp of the usurper.
All hail SHELLEY ANN, Duelmaster of ARDIVENT! Would you believe that over half of
the old women in ARDIVENT seem to feel that they could fight better than you
gladiators?
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city ARDIVENT. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in ARDIVENT
these days is AZURE CLOUDS. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid them.
Apparently the stalwarts of FANDILS are catching the bulk of jests down at the
challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Loose talk at the arena has
reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after
ANTI-LEAP YEAR. Watch your back!
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears
arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a
stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a
different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Ahhhhh. But What Water? takes over. You will assure your statements somehow, Assur.
Yes, indeed. Kudos. -- WOF

The Cook Messed Up -- Yes, you did. Again. There is something about that in you
that I like. -- Shelley Ann

Corbin Ross -- It was my day to shine, and I did. Big time. -- Clara Rose

Joubert Klee -- Can't you just feed me, or scratch my ears, or.... You don't have to
beat me, you know? That's cruelty to animals. Cute little animals. -- Irvin
(Swirvin all over the place after Joubert's beating.)

And, Arlene, thank you. That can of tuna fish helped me feel a little better, but I
need to get back my true Swirv. -- Swirvin Irvin

Health. Humility. Honor. The Red Sands await. -- Fandil The Wise

So scared of Fandil and his crew that it looks like I'll miss 2 turns in a row.
Naughty slugbait will fix that problem soon.

Clara Rose -- That was SERIOUSLY unkind of you. -- Corbin Ross

What Water? -- Damn, I was hoping you'd know. I don't have a clue. -- Long Biggar

What the heck? Somebody sent an ASSASSIN after me? Does this mean there is an
important or valuable secret in the Haunted Hatshop? -- Marci Foote

Irvin -- Dman, I was just trying to give you a bath! Not even soap, just cool water.
You should be GLAD about that, in this heat! -- Joubert Klee the badly scratched

Jim -- Tough luck for you, I guess, but *I* didn't mind. And you survived, so it
wasn't TOO tough. -- Arlene Ross
