DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats. The press conference will begin
shortly."
It was standing room only as Chess Master and Nimzovich walked into the tight
confines where the media met the current champion under the stands of Ardivent's
gladiatorial arena. The Commission required all Duelmasters and their managers to
make themselves available immediately after each Title duel. Normally, these get
togethers were of interest only to beat writers and overzealous fans, but the sheer
numbers of reporters as well as the long (and growing) line of business suits filing
in behind the new Duelmaster, each with a contract and pen in hand, said something
more was happening here
Hands shot up as Chess Master took off his fedora and set it on the table before
him. He pulled the pipe from his mouth, and motioned towards the local beat writer,
an unassuming fellow from the local Ardivent Free Press. "What do you call that new
move you unleashed on Deathscar to start the duel?"
Nimzovich looked up from the contract he was signing, and made eye contact with
the writer, causing him to quickly look away. Chess Master nodded to a lackey in the
corner, and a banner blazoned with "Ford Quality Wagons and Coaches" unfurled behind
them. He elbowed Nimzovich, who responded with a grimace and a weak smile, as a
photographer took several pictures and hurried away to get them to his marketing
department before the deadline.
"Leg sweep."
Nimzovich sat back, picked up his flagon of mead, and took a long drink. He set
it down, picked up his pen, and nodded towards the line of new business admirers.
The writers all feverishly wrote down the comment, leaning forward as they waited
expectantly for the rest of the explanation, which never came. More experienced
writers immediately shot their hands in the air, yelling "Chess Master! Chess
Master!" He motioned towards a young, ivy league looking fellow from Sports
Illustrated.
"Who is the most dangerous opponent you've faced?"
Nimzovich signed the contract in front of him, and shook hands with the business
rep while more cameras flashed. A marketing intern slapped a Nike "swoosh" on his
sweat stained armor, and whispered something in his ear. Nimzovich glumly took off
his Converse All Stars, which were quickly replaced with a specially designed,
overpriced, overly flashy leather shoe that Chess Master hoped would bring in the
royalties. It had springs in the heel, and velcro straps instead of shoe laces.
"Deathscar."
By now everyone in the room had figured out that Nimzovich was a man of few
words, and as quickly as they could scrabble down his one word answer, they were
elbowing each other, shouting at the top of their lungs and fighting for position to
ask the next question. Chess Master nodded towards a beautiful female, with a
stunning smile, and short skirt. This time it was Nimzovich who looked away when eye
contact was made.
"What do you say to your critics who claim you were unbelievably lucky to win,
and that this rates as one of the biggest upsets in the history of Title fights,
certainly in Ardivent and possibly in all of Alastari."
Nimzovich signed the next contract, and watched woefully as his flagon of mead
was snatched away and replaced with a bottle of Dasani Water, while another banner,
this time with "Pepsi" emblazoned on it, rolled down behind him. More cameras
flashed, more hands were shaken, and more money flowed into Chess Master's bank
account.
"Probably true."
Chess Master stood up, raised his arms, and smiled broadly at the group of
reporters and business people who crowded the room. "Just a couple more questions,
please. I don't want to wear out our new Duelmaster." He gestured to the biggest
name in the room, a reporter from a nationally syndicated show, who nodded
condescendingly toward the two at the front of the room.
"Chess Master, this question is directed at you. What exactly is your
relationship with Nimzovich, and what do you say to accusations that you are just
trying to make a quick buck off his sudden success?"
Nimzovich looked up, startled at the allegations, but a quick word from Chess
Master put him back to signing the tall stack of endorsement contracts. As Chess
Master commanded the attention of those in the room, a stack of merchandise piled up
around Nimzovich, all of it with his likeness stamped on it. The "Nimzovich Knockout
Dueling" game drew the most attention, with its brightly colored box already
displaying his new signature move on the cover.
"I discovered Nimzovich. I trained him. I developed him throughout his career.
I created the strategy for his success. I brought in mentors, coaches, even
psychologists to get him where he is now. I invested money and time in his career.
This is not me cashing in on his overnight success. This is merely a return on my
investment."
The last question startled the sponsors, who looked up with alarm and leaned
forward to hear the fateful answer.
"What happens to the endorsement money if Nimzovich loses next week, and falls
back into faceless anonymity?"
Nimzovich stood up, gathered everything in his arms, and kicked the table over,
scattering the reporters in the front row.
"No Refunds."
SPY REPORT
Welcome ARDIVENT. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights
have I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... Woof! WRATHMEN were a
bunch of dogs after WE GOT GAME got through with 'em! 1st ain't so sweet as 2nd!
Hmmmph! I always thought FANDILS was an over-rated team and they proved it with a
0-3-0! What's with WINEHOUSE? She actually beat BLUVALLEY WARRIORS' ROCKSOCK JONES,
and walked away with 15 more points from the fight. Major screwup at THE 27 CLUB.
PIGPEN lost 12 points to LORENS KLU. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe PIGPEN
will provide more easy wins... I can barely restrain my enthusiam for BLACK
COLOSSUS' outstanding member, Duelmaster DEATHSCAR. I suppose you want to hear some
rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports.
ARDIVENT thinks WRATHMEN and their 26-4-4 is too much! If at first you don't
succeed, give up... Management must be dealin', as the boys at FANDILS ain't
reelin'! WRATHMEN's mad!
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? Here's some advice: study your opponent, master many skills,
fight dirty.
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. All work
and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. I don't want to overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen

Congrats to Duelmaster Nimzovich. -- Fandil The Wise
Brooke and Lorens -- I apologize for Earl. He has always been a little, as you say,
perverse. -- WOF
Tynarae -- What you did to me was perverse! I am going to complain to The
Commission, Dearie. -- Earl
Lorens Klu -- I salute on your skill and the victory, you witch! -- Mildred Leons
Now, now Mildred.... -- Fandil The Wise
Pigpen -- Whew! You were more messed up than I was messed up, so I fought better
than you fought, and I won and you lost. Whew! -- Jerome
Winehouse -- It was simply my day. -- Uncle Leroy
Maybe so, but a dry white wine would have been better.
I'm dreaming of a White Christmas--for Tempe. -- An Anonymous Fandil
Perish the thought!
Health. Humility. Honor.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
See you in Tempe in January. -- Fandil The Wise
Mmmmbuhhh -- Uh, yeah. You're right. That is hard to say. -- Capablanca
Deathscar -- What? You never saw a leg sweep before? It's my new secret weapon. --
Nimzovich, the NEW People's Champion
Inquisitor -- I have a question for YOU: How in the world did you learn more than I
did? -- Ruy Lopez
Freaky Tah -- Great! Now I have to figure out how who to bloodfeud with. JUST what
I needed! Since you like Down Challenges so much, I was thinking of a Champion+.
But, even for me, that's bit much. Ruy Lopez, it is!
RIP Polgara 11(+1)-17(+1)-12-17-9-3-17 PR. Running her with a 4 KD in APA/F, I
really thought she was unkillable. Looks like I was wrong. Again.
Four dead! Not catastrophic, but ominous. Who will cut the firewood if they're all
dying in the Dark Arena?
Earl -- How sweet of you to say so! -- Brooke Jones
Polgar -- No problem, we aim to serve. -- Brooke Jones
P.S. Oh, darn. You weren't supposed to carry ON that way. Dying is not a good
career move.
It looks like a two-three last time. Not what we'd hoped for--a five-oh was our
dream--but it beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. -- Brooke Jones
Mildred Leona -- You're a fine figure of a woman, for those who like the elfin-slim
look. I enjoyed your company. -- Lorens Klu
Mattheas -- I could have gone all day without that loss and been perfectly happy. --
Brooke Jones
Feheadrae -- On careful consideration, I've decided you must be some kind of fern. I
have nothing against ferns, some of my best friends are ferns, but I regard them with
a tad of suspicion. How many might be secret chaos ferns, after all? -- Rocksock
Jones
Headsman -- Ah, you thought to overawe me with your height? I was ready for that
move. -- Hereford Jones
Solaarrin -- Is it the doubled letters that is the secret of your success? I've got
the double ell, but maybe I should add something, maybe... Billy Jooe?
