Phantasm had just dismissed Ookazi to the guild house and now his next agent had
arrived to give his report. Phantasm remained seated at the wooden table and did not
turn to greet Umi as he entered the tavern door. Normally he would not let his
agents, or anyone for that matter, approach his back, but the Spymaster always made
it a point to have his back to Umi whenever the opportunity arose.
Three years earlier, Phantasm was following a mark in the city of Bonsur. Umi
had come upon him in a darkened alley and attempted to mug Phantasm. Umi's limp was
a stark reminder of that mistake. The once agile young man did not move through the
darkness and alleyways as he once did. Luckily, Phantasm recognized Umi's quick wit
and domineering spirit. The Spymaster recruited the young man on the spot. "If you
make it to the Isle, the Witch can fix your limp," is the promise Phantasm always
gave to Umi. The thought of Sheila Greywand granting him immortality and mending his
broken hip functioned as a strong motivator for the young agent.
"The night is passing quickly," Phantasm waited as Umi seated himself, "give
your report so we both may take our rest for the night."
"As you wish," Umi nodded. "The northerners are a very secretive group. They
do not take too kindly to strangers either," Umi began. "The tribes that inhabit the
Badlands are the worst, but I knew all the vital information I needed would be
provided by them."
"Skip the introduction," Phantasm warned. "I know all about the Badlanders.
There is only one Badlander I sent you to investigate. Tell me everything you
uncovered concerning Maximillian."
"As you wish," was once again the reply. "All the information I could gather
began...

"For crimes against the tribe, Maximillian, we of the Tribal Council find you
guilty. You are hereby stripped of privilege and citizenship offered to every member
of this tribe. You are hereby stripped of your rank among our people. Maximillian,
son of Morgul, you are exiled from our lands to the lands of the Southerners. Should
you ever choose to return, you will be executed," the voice broke through the wintry
chill of the night. The speaker, Jord Ironbull of the Tribal Council, rolled the
animal skin with the Council's judgment upon it and placed it in Maximillian's hand.
Jord Ironbull was the elder member of the Council and Maximillian could see in
the old man's eyes that he did not take pleasure in his pronouncement. Jord was as
old as the northern mountains, an elder among the people. He would no doubt still be
the Badlander's chief if age had not taken its toll upon his body. It was now Jord's
wisdom he offered to the Badlands tribe and not strength of arms. That privilege
belonged to Ymir Bloodgrin.
If Jord Ironbull was as old as the mountains, Ymir Bloodgrin was as tall and
strong as those same mountains. His massive frame dwarfed even the largest warrior
of the Badlands tribe. His arms and chest looked to be chiseled from stone and his
muscular frame was detailed under the heavy animal skins he wore. He wielded a large
greatsword, fashioned in the ways of the Badland's tribe, but it bore a striking
resemblance to the southern Mordant greatsword. The greatsword, or Polar-biter as it
was referred to among the Badlanders, was a few inches short of six feet with a keen
double edge. A sturdy cross-tee hilt was adorned with rubies and emeralds. Ymir
wielded the greatsword often with one hand and effectively. His strength and skill
with the sword made him the Badland's chief and head of the Tribal Council.
Maximillian was shocked at the verdict. He knew his own failure and the crime
that had now cast him from his homeland forever. He expected a death sentence. "I
deserve a death sentence," he thought. He then remembered the events that brought
him to the fate now before him.
A force from southern city, Kurukar had sent a troop into the Badland
territories. The group was nothing more than a band of mercenaries hired by a
wealthy merchant to seek out spoils in the tribal lands of the Badlanders.
Maximillian, War-Master of the Badlands tribe, led his men to face the intruders, but
in the midst of the skirmish with the mercenaries, a second group, hired by the same
merchant from Snowbound came upon them. Maximillian's forces were decimated on the
snowy hills of the Badlands. He and his men were left for dead, yet when the scene
was discovered three days later, Maximillian, and only Maximillian, was still alive.
He was carried back to the Badlander's camp and nursed back to health for one
purpose; he was to stand trial for his failure as War-Master.
Ymir Bloodgrin stood as Jord Ironbull returned to his seat. "You look shocked
at the mercy this council has bestowed upon you nephew." Ymir circled Maximillian as
he spoke, "Know this, your punishment is exile instead of death for one reason--I
willed it to be so! You are the son of my sister, and I do not wish for the grief of
your failure to be a burden to her. Depart from us! Never return!" Ymir turned
Maximillian to the tent entrance and pushed him through the opening.
Maximillian picked himself up from the snowy ground. The tribe had gathered
outside of the Tribal Council's tent. No one would look at Maximillian. As the
former War-Master made his trek to exit the camp, the Badlanders would turn their
backs to him. Someone, his mother perhaps, had gathered his belongings and placed
them at the exit of the camp. His winter furs and weapons were bundled together. A
later discovery of dried meat, cheese, and water would confirm Maximillian's
suspicion that his own mother had prepared the travel pack of his possessions for
him.
Maximillian traveled south, first to the land of Kurukar. A wealthy merchant
was found dead some weeks after his arrival, but Maximillian was gone before he could
be questioned by the city's authorities. He traveled further south through the
swamps of North Fork eventually moving southwest to Fratsfa. From there he went to
the city of Arkers. The snowcapped mountains reminded Maximillian of the northern
lands he once called home. Here he would begin his new life among the Southerners he
so despised. Here in Arkers, Maximillian would build his legacy.

"Interesting. Interesting," Phantasm mumbled. His mind was racing trying to
find a connection between Kat and Maximillian. In truth, he finally conjectured,
there was not a concrete connection between the two. They both had similar
backgrounds, but Phantasm wondered how many other gladiatorial managers were exiled
from their homelands or were covering a shady past. Kat, an Aruaki, had fled from
his homeland under threat of death to the free city of North Fork. Maximillian, a
barbarian of the Badlands tribe from northern Alastari, had been exiled from his
tribe and relocated to Arkers.
If no personal connection could be made between the two, Phantasm would have to
explore their professional connections. Maybe then he could find the information he
was searching for and uncover why the Krypteia had approached both men. The
Spymaster dismissed Umi and stood to leave the tavern. There was more information to
gather and many more plots to set in motion before the night was over.

To all Turf War junkies, I thought when I get here it would be something to boast
about; yet I just don't have it in me to talk down to all you Billy Bad a$$e$! So to
any who care might I suggest using Delarquan strats by hitting them where it hurts;
right in the scum.

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. Take a look at OF WOLF AND MAN's act, as they have a 4-1-0 week and
gain 11 places in the team ranking. Rising in the ranks like a loaf of armored bread
(okay, I admit it's corny) is DRAKE'S COMICS, who swept up 19 places in the ranks.
Take a look at THE LAST RESORT's act, as they have a 3-2-0 week and gain 15 places in
the team ranking. Rising in the ranks like a loaf of armored bread (okay, I admit
it's corny) is I HATE THEM, who swept up 19 places in the ranks. Take a look at DARK
PINNACLE's act, as they have a 3-0-0 week and gain 19 places in the team ranking.
Rising in the ranks like a loaf of armored bread (okay, I admit it's corny) is
DESOLATE ONES, who swept up 13 places in the ranks. Take a look at RONIN's act, as
they have a 4-1-0 week and gain 23 places in the team ranking. What goes up, must
come down. Watch out DOUBLE-X! BLACK STORM may fall on you as it crushes past the
teams below it to fall on the 20th spot. Suffering under a 2-3-0 record and dropping
from 4th to 24th place were the THE OPERA. Keep trying! A seasoned team is steady
in the lists. But to ABYSMAL RITES, which fell to 27th, it's what you soak in before
going to the Dark Arena. Suffering under a 0-5-0 record and dropping from 10th to
32nd place were the TIMELY HEROES. Keep trying! What goes up, must come down.
Watch out DOUBLE-X! CHEERS may fall on you as it crushes past the teams below it to
fall on the 33rd spot. A seasoned team is steady in the lists. But to GAELIC STORM,
which fell to 35th, it's what you soak in before going to the Dark Arena. Suffering
under a 2-3-0 record and dropping from 29th to 44th place were the X-MEN II. Keep
trying! NATURAL B. KILLERS 2 is no joke as it posted a 4-0-0 week advancing from
25th place to 18th place. Hey everybody, watch out for MALICIOUS, who flew up 26
points in the rankings after mashing NIGHTCRAWLER like a melon. Keep your eye on
this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. RED DEVIL was
defeated by DON KING and drops 18 points. What does the Duelmaster and Piltdown Man
have in common? They are both the most challenged apes in human history! Heyheyhey!
CUP OF TOE got through to the Duelmaster this turn. No doubt he was more than
anxious to kick OPAI's tail out of the throne! Going for the gusto and coming up
with aught but bloody knuckles was MYSTIC ORC FEAST's CUP OF TOE, who was turned away
from the Duelmastership by OPAI. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion
a day keeps T.P.s at bay.
Here is other news that is of note. And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't
avoid OF WOLF AND MAN, please raise you hand. Wow. Does DOUBLE-X really have that
many liars? And you guys like to boo me? Well, unsling your rasberries, cause
CHEERS beats feet every time OF WOLF AND MAN smiles at them. Try farming, eh? In a
mismatch, our friend MEDEE of THE OPERA got heroic notions and challenged HUMBUG.
What did it get him? A 14-4-0 record, that's what. This week MEDEE 14-4-0 fought
HUMBUG 24-16-1 and in losing gained 4 points. I know several gladiators who could go
for a few fights like that. In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, DRAMA
QUEEN went after ORC PLAGUE, who was higher by 18 points. Well, when the dust
settled, DRAMA QUEEN overcame ORC PLAGUE. BLACKENED of OF WOLF AND MAN had better
have a good reason for challenging down 14 points in a challenge which he won. I
thought BLACKENED showed great skill and promise when he defeated MY PILLOW. All
right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! Big deal, so PSYLOCKE got mashed in the Dark Arena. With
hers face she was more at home with the trolls than with us. (Waka waka). For those
of you who missed it, Death showed up, grabbed GALIUS by the ear and took him away to
a place where he won't need a coat. The audience likes blood and there was plenty of
it covering NIGHTCRAWLER as he was driven to an early grave by MALICIOUS of the
DOOMWOLVES. Big creature! COURT JESTER kills GALIUS. Who ya gonna fight next,
COURT JESTER--Minnie Mouse? I hope KNIGHTS TEMPLAR has a good enough fighter to beat
the snot out of COURT JESTER. Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your
ally in the arena with you and see what happens.
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian,
but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. And remember, you can pick your
friends and you can pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one already!-- The

active slow arena to go and mix it up with my friends in. I originally started this
team in Aradi but once I decided that the Greek Guy(tw) and Nuln(tw) would hang out
in Challengers for a while I decided to move these guys into here to play around
with. Nuln(tw) got himself killed off in Challengers unfortunately so it was really
just the Greek Guy(tw) that pinhead Anti(tw) and the biggest (or smallest depending
on your perspective) loser of them all Soultaker(tw) left on the team. I just
recently decided to come active and low and behold I found two more of my most
dislikeable fellow managers to play around with, the Creepster(tw) Slugbait(tw).
