Part 111
Morngrym was nervous. He wasn't typically the sort given to such an emotion,
being a rather analytical tinker, and not much for baseless emotional responses.
However, the Tourney of the Dead was proving to be an exception to the rule.
Michael had decided to try and bring Nyan'ti back from the dead, and therefore
had entered her into the 'dead tourney'. Because of the upcoming Turf War and some
other matter, which Morngrym hadn't been privy to, had come up, Michael hadn't been
able to attend in person. So Morngrym had taken it upon himself to offer his help.
If Nyan'ti DID come back, she was going to need some guidance in the early hours of
her resurrection--apparently being dead played havoc with your mental state.
Fortunately, there were others here that Morngrym knew. Scarlet Rose was a
firecracker of a lass, and though she'd recently gained, and lost, the Duelmastery of
Morya, she was still her hot-headed self, and proving to be an able distraction to
Morngrym's overactive imagination. That Experientia gal was another matter entirely,
though. She was one of the 'Northwight' group. It would be bad enough if they
really WERE Northwights, since the race was notoriously high-minded, but she was
actually one of those selected from Hel's realm, and they were a chilly lot to say
the least. Still, maybe he'd be able to bring some good news. If ANY of the girls
managed to secure a win, Michael would be pleased, especially if Nyan'ti pulled off
her resurrection. The inside line was that she'd assume the Champion status for
Force of Will if she made it.
As he considered the implications of one of Michael's entries making the cut,
his mind drifted to the latest contraption Michael had asked for his help on. He was
dabbling in some really obscure stuff. The sentium thing was a long shot, but at
least there had been precedent for it. This 'Chronolyzer' thing was completely off
the charts. Time was not a very malleable element--at least not in retrospect. The
future was always flexible, but the present had a tendency of crystallizing the past.
Michael bought into the 'alternate reality' theory pretty heavily, though. He
believed that by utilizing extremely precise calculations, one should be able to look
at the hypothetical parts--the 'what ifs'--and by tapping those alternate realities
at exact points one could reveal what had taken place as a result of an alternate
action. Morngrym could make perfect sense of Magitech's highly symbolic and often
abstract formulae and schematics, but the stuff Michael was spinning off might as
well have COME from another reality. Morngrym had to build a separate device just to
allow Michael to put his schematic into a visual format--it was that convoluted.
Ironically enough, it looked to be working--at least in a controlled
environment. The upcoming Turf War would provide the necessary data to test its true
capabilities. Still, the whole principle of trying to work around a universal law
disturbed Morngrym. Whoever or whatever created the cosmos had good reasons for
those laws, and it seemed almost sacrilegious to invent a way to circumvent them.
What really concerned Morngrym, though, was Michael's true motives. Granted, such a
device would prove unbelievably useful for gladiatorial competition, but it bordered
on outright cheating, and Michael frowned on those sorts of things. So WHY was he
trying to find a way to reveal potential actions or the potential repercussions of
actions that MIGHT have happened?
Morngrym scowled. He liked a mystery, but this was way out of his league, and
it disturbed him to be working on a project whose full ramifications he couldn't
comprehend.
He was just about to grab a messenger to contact Michael about the matter, when
the announcement was made to commence the Tourney. He sighed and put his
magnification glasses on. It was time to play cheerleader. What a day.

Notes from the arena champ.
I am China Milkmaid, and I have worked my way to the top of this Swampy
nightmare place. Now get me out of here! It is a dirty, grimy, damp, musty, smelly
land. It has many people like that Managerr who stumbles around inadvertently (Or is
it purposely?) breaking or messing up things. I like clean, crisp, delicate, pretty,
and orderly things. I must get home to the place I love. As my friend Dorothy says,
"There's no place like home." Perhaps this little quip from Wicky-history will
present you with better understanding.
"There are worse things in the world than being a Scarecrow." That is the now
wise Scarecrow's conclusion after the friends travel through the land of dainty
china. The Tin Woodsman builds a ladder so they can all climb the over the wall that
protects the small country. When they reach the top of wall and peer into the land
they each say, "Oh, My!" Before them lies a land filled with living china figurines.
The figurines are beautiful and delicate but also very fragile. Once Dorothy and her
friends have climbed over the wall, they quickly learn they are not welcome in the
country. The figurines are dreadfully afraid that the strangers will break them
either accidentally or on purpose. During their brief journey through the land, they
encounter a china milkmaid and her cow....
Pray for my safe return before someone breaks or kills me. Then I would have to

SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of SCOMSS SWAMP! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team INDIFFERENCE was
unseated this week as THE OPERA moved up from 3rd ranking to take the top spot with a
5-0-0 record for the round. I have begun to suspect trickery on the part of KAOS.
How else weeks like this one's 4-0-0? How else the sudden move to 5th team? There
were bitter words at ABYSMAL RITES' guildhouse after a 0-1-0 showing this week which
dropped the stable into 14th. Dark Arena anyone? My praise to THE FALLEN for their
5-0-1 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully fought round deserving of
notice! TEN LORDS ALEAPIN caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as
it skillfully bested PUDDY and was awarded 23 points in recognition. In one of the
week's more notable duels, RERUN put down FRASIER, causing it to lose 16 points of
recognition in the process. The city has turned out in honor of MOTHER THERESA, for
with his arena victory he may now lay claim to the highest position in the city! No
confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their position using
magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps?
Many and various are the arts of battle. In SCOMSS SWAMP "art" is a word that
has long since passed from the language! My inside sources tell me that the team to
beat in SCOMSS SWAMP these days is KAOS. At least, most blades in town are looking
to avoid them. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent
the better part of last week avoiding KAOS. Indeed it was CHEERS. Loose talk at the
arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are
after MEDEE. Watch your back! For some warriors honor is not important--only empty
victory. See, gladiators, how KODIAK of THE BEAR'S PAW challenged down 16 points to
NIGHTSHADE. Few would not have guessed the outcome of the bout as NIGHTSHADE was
bested by KODIAK. Is this what passes for courage in SCOMSS SWAMP? As a gladiator
gets older, the icy grip of fear lays hold of his heart. True, MEDEE? Who could
miss your "brave" challenge of KURGER BING? The weight of the challenge fell hard
upon KURGER BING and predictably he was beat by MEDEE. This is how to arouse the
anger of an entire guild! ATTERY must really be harboring a grudge against the ALL
SWAMP HAMMERZ guild! Merciless, 26 challenged down SWAMP TURF HAMMER points this
week to duel with he. All the city knows the duel went in favor of ATTERY. I shall
not fail to spread the word in other cities of this "mighty" victory. As a gladiator
gets older, the icy grip of fear lays hold of hers heart. True, DAFNE? Who could
miss your "brave" challenge of TRENT? The weight of the challenge fell hard upon
TRENT and predictably he was overcame by DAFNE. This is how to arouse the anger of
an entire guild! A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems
that KORTALIA posted a challenge against the more highly recognized SEB WITE. The
results, you ask? Well, the firebrand KORTALIA was beat by SEB WITE. Remember
warriors, this is the discipline of steel.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. This week marked the last days of MY
HUCKLEBERRY who at 9-14-1 was dispatched to the Dark Arena by the command of AN
EPHRAIM's demanding management. SHUFFLE must hold silent, for this week he was
humbled in the arena by a successful Bloodfeud won by PENEMUE of THE FALLEN. Hail
PENEMUE for thy victory! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with
fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in SCOMSS SWAMP. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must

As the Turf War comes down to its final week shortly after The Face, I wish to
congratulate everyone on the spirit and intensity of the competition. It is a fine

1. Full manual reporting from the Face will be reported to the moderators through
Managerr, Crip, and Lee, and results will be in the 10th round scoring.
2. The 10th and final round will run Aug4ish, and from Lee's advance news to the
moderators, a "full court press" will be placed on final, official, results posting.
On-line posting at The Site will occur first, of course and probably just after the
electronic 10th round is posted on line.
3. A final official-official report will be in the early Sept newsletter. This will
list winners and "prizes."
4. By then an "official letter" will be in Lee's hands posting the approved RSI
prizes. Each winner will then contact Lee for the winnings. Feel free to e-mail or

were not here last turn. Lee was laid off from his job, so what money he does have
is for Hyborian War. As for me, I went from five days a week to four days a week,
and from eight hours a day to six hours a day, and from $0.95 an hour to $0.65 an
hour. So I can run one guy every other month, as most of my funds go to HW as well.
Lee, Malik, and I have put in for a new HW friens game if you want to get into it as
