She looked around with disfavor. As far as she was concerned, Glacier View Estates had nothing at all going for it. "To look at graduating gladiator lands," Ellita Fess answered. "But none of us is a graduating gladiator," Fender Grale protested. "It'll be months before any of us even has a chance to be close to graduating." He hunched deeper into his cloak, which was lined with rabbit skins, and blew on his cold fingers. "And I gotta tell you, if *I* graduate, I'm not taking land in this icebox. I going for sun, sand, surf, the kind of stuff Debby Tonte likes." "Besides, there are probably ice trolls up here. And other icky frozen monsters, too." Gilia shivered. "Can we go back now?" "No," Ellita said firmly. "This is planning ahead, which is a good thing to do. And if there ARE ice trolls," she added, brightening suddenly, "we'll get a bounty for killing them. Then we could move out of that haunted guildhouse Jorja found us." She started forward briskly, the snow squeaking under her boots. "Let's find that real estate agent, what's-his-name." "Lars Penkatten, at your service." The voice behind them was smooth, maybe even a little oily. But after all, he was a realtor. "What fine properties here--" he gestured expansively around the valley with its terrain of rocks and snow, "can I show you to-- URK!" He flew forward, landing sprawled on his face in the snow, and didn't move. The stone which had hit his head (which head, being cushioned by a furry cap, was not seriously damaged) lay beside him. Fender Grale, who happened to be facing the glacier, gulped and said, "It's an abominable snowman!" "And it's lowering the property values!" Ellita snapped. "We have to put a stop to that!" >)]H[(< + -----:----- + >)] The Free Cities #69 [(< + -----:----- + >)]H[(< Zukal: Ghenis watched the ship _Relentless_ ease out into the channel and brushed his hands together. It was bound for Niatoli to further certain interests of the dark cult. On it was Veleks, and Cousin Og, who would look after the small thief...one way or another. Which freed him to attend to other matters. First of those other matters was a meeting with Pelishtekan, the Ferencian who was currently the 'chief priest' of the cult. Ghenis scowled to hide his grimace of disgust. He didn't like the Ferencian. In fact, he loathed the man. But it wasn't necessary to like him, not really. As long as Pelishtekan did his job, nothing else counted. And right now, the man's job was to explain what manner of creature, monster, or whatever was hunting over the lands just north of Zukal. And how the damned thing could be fought and destroyed. It was in the way of certain plans that he had made for the benefit of the dark cult...and of himself, of course. The dark power did not expect his minions to work for nothing but the joy of it. Ghenis left the waterfront behind and wove his way through the twisted and noisome alleys of one of Zukal's poorest districts. The cult always had its centers among the homes of the poor. They were the ones who had something to gain from it, and nothing to lose, from shaking up the old order, after all. Ghenis smiled just a little. He liked shaking things up. The cult was headquartered in a tall narrow building squeezed between other tall narrow buildings. The cellar, which was dark and always damp and divided into tiny rooms no more than six feet square, was used for...storage. More or less. The ground floor, reached by going down half a dozen steps from street level, was the shrine itself. The level above that was where the main work of the cult was done, the plotting and planning, the gathering of information, the good stuff. Above that, two floors of small rooms where members of the cult lived if they couldn't do better for themselves. And on the top floor, the pigeons that carried messages from points as distant as Zuwayza and Murska in the north, Rocanis, Xochithlan, and even Tricorus in the south. Most people had no idea how far the cult reached. Which was another source of amusement to Ghenis. The authorities here in Zukal, the very heart of the cult, had no idea that it was anything more than a handful of dissatisfied commoners meeting to worship some petty godling. Ha! If Bey Sekahos knew how near he stood to the rim of disaster, how fast he was sliding down the slope into hell--! Even the Bandit Princes, who had a clearer understanding of their city, didn't know that the cult was gaining power daily and would soon be ready to make its move. IF the monster north of the city could be dealt with. Ghenis pushed open the door and stepped toward Pelishtekan's office. Near Malcorn: The finger of light slid across the surface of the tall stone and touched the worn carvings, which leaped into sudden clarity. The little clearing, which had been empty except for Lord Malcorn and Tiljanz al Burgos, the young Karnhorn diplomat, was suddenly full of shadows. Or something. Tiljanz could feel the weight of a dozen minds thinking about him--calculating minds, hostile minds, hungry ones. He held himself still and quiet with difficulty. This was Lord Malcorn's meeting; he himself was just present as a witness. Words came out of the darkness, hollow as caves, clear as trumpets. "Why are you here, Malcorn?" "To demand that you enforce your side of the agreement we made, Dregur," the lord of Malcorn replied. If a great tree had spoken, its voice might have sounded like that. "Our side? What have we, the true and original lords of all the land between the lakes, to 'enforce' at the command of an ephemeral like you?" "Do not play games with me. A deal was made and sworn under just such a moon, that the dregur would attack only those who entered this land at the command of the Easterner Inzolas. In return for this, you were released from the Silent Place." "And if we choose now to disregard that 'deal' you speak of?" Idle inquiry. "The Silent Place is still there." "You think you could return us to that captivity?" Scorn and amusement. "You?" "If you do not keep your side of the agreement," now Malcorn's voice was like iron, cold black iron, "I will return you to that captivity. Me." At that moment, Tiljanz did not doubt that Blackie would do just that, whatever the cost to himself. "We did make an oath." The voice was the same, but different. A different dregur speaking, Tiljanz thought. "The oath is a binding already. He could do it." Warning, cool consideration. "Because a few of us have chosen to Hunt freely, as we used to? Unfair! This land was OURS. If we stretch out our hand to take it back, where is the injustice in that?" Passion. "The injustice is in the breaking of our oath. The land itself will reject an oathbreaker. It has always been so." Stern command. "We must keep our part of the bargain, or by our failure we release Lord Malcorn from his. And he could then return us to the Silent Place, if he is willing to pay the price." A pause. "And you can see that he is so willing." Objection. "Those who Hunt alone will not be called back to the kennel, even by you." Unyielding command. "Then I myself will lead a Hunt against them." >)]H[(< + -----:----- + >)] The Free Cities #70 [(< + -----:----- + >)]H[(< Between Ibizond and Korga: The horseman started to turn away, but two of the hounds made a determined attack on the three gladiators as they scrambled out of their sheltering tree. Now, the tree was a trap rather than a shelter. Cadal was first out, hammering at the nearest hound with his heavy blade. Aghatamar was just behind him, close enough to slash at the hound trying to take him from the side. The horseman turned back, just as the moon shone through a gap in the clouds overhead. Aghtamar sucked in her breath in shock. There was a face, she repeated that to herself as a litany against the unknown. Two eyes--she shuddered and wrenched her gaze away from them, feeling her blood turn to ice and her bones to sand. A beak of a nose, a hunting bird's beak. Gash of a mouth, with an icy glitter of fangs. Behind her, Zilla muttered a prayer to Sermina and struck two-handed at the hound, awkwardly because she didn't want to look directly at it. That hound was no beast that ever curled up quietly before a fire or accepted a pat on the head for a job well done. Cadal lunged at his hound and came near to spitting it on his sword, but the uncanny creature twisted away. The horseman laughed, a sound which would chill the strongest heart, and turned away again, riding up the road toward whatever his, or its third hound had cornered. Fist of Kjarran, most likely, but there was no way to help him now. They had their own problems. The hounds had a pattern of swirling in to attack and then out before they could be struck in return, coordinating their efforts smoothly without needing their master's guidance. They must have done this many times before. Aghtamar thought of the other people dead along this road and knew they must have sustained just such an attack: the horn with its message of fear, then these uncanny beasts with their teasing and toying, and finally the huntsman on his horse. Not a good death. If there was such a thing as a 'good death'. While these thoughts were flitting through her mind, she kept her sword moving as well. The hounds seemed reluctant, maybe even totally unwilling, to close with them, but they wouldn't leave them alone, either. "The damned things are trying to wear us down," she muttered. And it might work. She was already breathing hard, and she could hear Zilla panting beside her. She couldn't hear Cadal, but he was farthest from her. "We've got to finish these," Cadal stated. "Fist of Kjarran is going to need our help." A shuffle and lunge, a hound yelped and dodged back. "Except they won't stand--" "And if we just go to Fist, turn our backs on these hounds," Zilla growled, "likely they'll jump on us from behind." "There must be SOME way we can kill or cripple these damned hounds!" Aghtamar snapped. "Anything that lives can be killed. It's a natural law or something." "We're not going to find it tonight except by chance," Cadal said. "And we have to go help Fist. If we all move together, back to back...." "Right! Let's move," Aghtamar agreed. "On the count of three?" *** ***** *** ***** *** The hound that Fist of Kjarran had crippled was dragging itself down the road toward its approaching master, whining pitifully. If it had been a proper dog, the gladiator might have regretted the injury. As it was...serve the damned beast right. As the hound had appeared to grow when it charged him, so did the hunter. What might have been a big horse--if it was a horse at all--became huge, and its rider dominated the sky. He...it seemed to wear a crown of cold lights, or maybe there were northern lights in the sky behind its head. No, that wasn't north, that was southeast. Fist shook his own head to clear out the fantasies. As the rider passed the crippled hound, he cried out in a terrible voice, a word Fist didn't know and didn't want to know. An evil word, he was sure. Maybe a spell, or a vow of vengeance. Not that it mattered! He had the protection of Kjarran and Jayde. He raised his sword against the moon-colored blade that was swinging down out of the stars above him. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. And so ends a long long of appearances as #1 in the ratings by a syndicated television program. The network is revamping our style, and should be back in full force after a few tweaks. For those who care about my particulars, I am a 13(1)-11(1)-8-16(1)-18(1)-15-7 Slasher, with Advanced Experts in Decise and Init, and an expert in Attack. Mode in init, +2 in decise, and a whopping -4 in attack means that this turns fight in the Dark Arena will end up being my last. 41 learned skills, along with a Hatchet as a favourite weapon (with a HI/LO rhythm, with the slash tactic, and a tendency to learn decise skills) are the end of the road in this neighborhood. Now we get to look forward to life under the Dark Sidhe. Mr. Hooper Open Sesame 3 Time DM of Snowbound SPY REPORT Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me! So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these really neat Spyreports can it? DARK SIDHE was SNOWBOUND's most avoided team. Is there some award for that? Hhmph! What kind of warriors are TEAM VIRTUE? DARK SIDHE, an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't get them to accept an invitation! Can DRUID'S GROVE's IRIADOR be more popular than me? She was challenged the most, but is that really the same? What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone gets killed. Not after four more fights.
