"There was something out there," Tillouisa whispered, squinting into the moonlit
distance. "I SAW it moving across the water."
"Somebody night-fishing in a rowboat," Song of Summer said in a normal voice.
"Everything isn't monsters, Til."
"Ha! That just shows how much YOU know." Tillouisa abandoned her whisper and
scowled at her teammate triumphantly. "I've SEEN monsters, Summer. I know what I'm
talking about. There are ALWAYS monsters around water--"
"In the Shagornan Desert, maybe, but--"
"Everywhere! Water's tricky, Summer. You can't TRUST it," the Rirorni woman
stated positively.
Before Song of Summer could reply to that, a cry floated to them from the dark
lake. Not a human cry, nor the call of any nightbird that either woman had heard
before. There was a little of the wolf howling in it, but what wolf would be in the
middle of miles of water? And even the howl of a wolf did not chill the blood quite
so effectively.
After a moment, Song of Summer swallowed twice and said, "It might not be a
monster even so." She didn't sound like she believed that. "It might be...just some
strange creature out there."
There was another cry from the lake, this time all too human, shrill with terror
and despair. Splashes accompanied it.
"I guess there was a night-fisherman out there, after all," Tillouisa noted.
"You don't have to sound so cheerful about it! That poor man probably died
"He would've heard the rumors of monsters same as we did," Tillouisa said,
shrugging. "If he chose to risk the lake anyway, well, what did he expect?" She
turned away from the waterfront.
"I don't suppose there's anything we could do to help him?"
"I don't suppose so. He's probably dead by now. Come on." Tillouisa grabbed
her teammate's arm and started towing her back up the sloping street.
     "Where are we going?"
"Around this block of buildings. They're all collapsed, and we couldn't get
through them. I want to check out the old records building now while the monster's
out on the lake."
"Til! You're INSANE! We don't know there's only ONE monster."
     "We can find out, then."

"It looks like somebody laid a plate, or a shield, or, I dunno, a cartwheel or
something on the field," Blacklock said doubtfully.
"If plates, shields, or cartwheels came twenty feet across, yes, it surely
does," Birdsong agreed.
Blacklock moved to study the circle of flattened grain--which was to have been
cut today--from another angle. Not that there was anything different to see.
Perfectly circular, perfectly flat. "It'd be hard to cut grain that's been trampled
down like that, wouldn't it?"
"Yeah, really hard--like impossible, and that's a lot of grain. It isn't like
we've got so much to spare, you know." Birdsong knelt and touched the smashed
stalks, drawing her hand back quickly. "They're frozen!"
"A twenty-foot cartwheel of ice?" Blacklock speculated doubtfully. "Well,
anyway, it's too bad, but it happened. What caused it, and what do we do about it?"
"I don't know to both, but I think..." Birdsong stood and frowned at the ruined
grain. "I think we tell Lord Malcorn."
"Oh, SH-- uh, shoot! You think he's been dabbling in magic and did this?"
"Of course not! Lord Malcorn isn't careless or destructive," Birdsong stated
positively. "But he'll know what to do."
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
Lord Malcorn, Blackie in more informal situations, was staring at another circle
of smashed crops. Hay, this time, and a couple of rabbits who had been so unlucky as
to be inside the circle when disaster fell. He knew, in a general sense, what had
caused it--when he had loosed the Dregur from the Silent Place, other things had
escaped also. From the Silent Place, and from other restraints elsewhere. He didn't
know exactly which "other things" had caused this, but he was sure that the ultimate
blame attached to him. That was the trouble with taking drastic measures to counter
drastic problems. You never knew what secondary effects might occur. Or what kind
of measures would be required to deal with the secondary problems, and what tertiary
problems might arise from THAT. He could spend the rest of his life cleaning up
after the results of releasing the Dregur.... But then, he could have spent the rest
of his life cleaning up after the invaders, too.
He sighed and turned to the farmer. "Keep your livestock and your workers out
of the fields," he directed. "There may be more of these, and it will require a
complicated bit of work to put a stop to it."

Between Ibizond and Korga:

The hound that Fist of Kjarran had crippled was dragging itself down the road
toward its approaching master, whining pitifully. If it had been a proper dog, the
gladiator might have regretted the injury. As it was...serve the damned beast right.
As the hound had appeared to grow when it charged him, so did the hunter. What
might have been a big horse--if it was a horse at all--became huge, and its rider
dominated the sky. He...it seemed to wear a crown of cold lights, or maybe there
were northern lights in the sky behind its head. No, that wasn't north, that was
southeast. Fist shook his own head to clear out the fantasies. As the rider passed
the crippled hound, he cried out in a terrible voice, a word Fist didn't know and
didn't want to know. An evil word, he was sure. Maybe a spell, or a vow of
vengeance. Not that it mattered! He had the protection of Kjarran and Jayde. He
raised his sword against the moon-colored blade that was swinging down out of the
stars above him.
"Kjarran and Jayde guide my hand!" Fist shouted, and then the blow fell against
his blade with enough force that it drove him to his knees. The hunter's blade was
white as bone, his own turned red as life's blood, and warmth came into his hands
from his two-handed grip on it, and down his arms, to counter the icy air that
cloaked his opponent. He was a little surprised to find himself still alive after
such a blow, more surprised still to find his blade unbroken. Nothing but the direct
intervention of his god Kjarran and the god's Daughter Jayde could have preserved his
life, he was sure. And the only proper way to show appreciation of that aid was to
get up and fight. Which he would do.
As the hunter's blade was withdrawn and raised for another blow, Fist lurched to
his feet. The hunter was thundering more of his evil-sounding words, they seemed to
streak toward him like arrows, like an icy hail or the bitterest wind of winter, and
it was hard to stand against them, the coldness and the hate and the fury.
Impossible to stand against another powerful sword-stroke delivered in their wake.
Fist did the only thing he could think of and threw himself forward under the falling
blade, slashing at the horse's forelegs where it reared high, then at its belly as he
rolled under it and out into the road.
The horse screamed as cold-gleaming coils emerged from its belly and came down
on all four feet, stumbled when one of its front legs wouldn't hold, and fell. The
hunter leaped free, but the fallen horse was now between him and his prey. Cold
light, colder than moonlight and without that clean purity, shivered around him.
The intestines that had spilled from the horse writhed like snakes, or like an
animated snare, coils twisting toward Fist. If they caught him, the gladiator
believed they would be like a snare and would hold him for the vengeance of the
hunter. He edged backward, not taking his eyes off the hunter but wondering uneasily
what had become of the hounds. The idea of one or two of those hell-hounds coming up
behind was enough to shake the steadiest nerves.
As though in answer to his worry, one of the hounds howled pain behind him.
"We've got your back," Cadal said. At that moment, the barbarian's voice was
the sweetest sound Fist could imagine.
"Serimna shield us all with her mercy!" Zilla added.
There were several butchery whacks interspersed with screams, and Aghtamar
growled, "What does it take to kill the damned thing?"
The knowledge that his friends were at his back, ready to stand and fight beside
him, was more warming than sunlight.
"The hounds won't close with us on their own," Cadal reported from close behind
him. "If we can take out the hunter, we may be home clear on this."
"That won't be easy," Fist of Kjarran observed. "These things can be hurt, but
damned if I know what will kill them." He staggered as one foot was dragged out from
under him. Someone caught his arm and kept him from falling while he looked down.
And swore. A loop of the horse's intestines had wrapped itself around his ankle. He
slashed downward to free his foot, then threw himself to the side just as the hunter
struck. Blades rang together as one of his comrades parried the blow. The hunter
spoke more of his unknown words that might be spells or cursing. Or really cursing,
if it came to that, really laying a curse.
Fist pushed himself to his feet again and faced his opponent grimly. "Kjarran
and Jayde, this has got to STOP." He raised his sword, noting that the blade had
gone red again, and advanced on the dark shape of the hunter. The blade burned as
hot as the hunter was cold and made a sound like a deep-voiced bell very far away.
Fist felt a presence, a force, move through his body, and without willing it he
lunged forward, driving the bright-burning blade toward the hunter. There was a
roaring around him, and he felt as though he'd been caught in a twist of wind, or an
earthquake, something natural and violent and beyond his control. It was a relief to

                                      SPY REPORT

Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! The boys at MIDDLE WAY 6 left the arena
dejected, after being kicked out of the top spot by TEAM VIRTUE. Good show!
Practice pays for BLAZE, who pummelled CAPT. FRIENDLY, to pocket 16 points. Win
some, lose some. Speaking of which, CONVICTED ASSASSIN was winsome, after beating
VANWAFEA and seeing her lose 11 points. What can be a greater victory? IRIADOR has
taken hers place as the top, as SNOWBOUND's new Duelmaster. So who's the team that's
been walking into taverns last week and ordering milk? Sounds like a PR stunt to me.
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! To quell some nasty rumors, the guys
in DARK SIDHE are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need to avoid 'em. As a
woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of TEAM VIRTUE, so did that sorry team
shy from DARK SIDHE Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and MISS FAITH is it
right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't TEAM VIRTUE proud!
Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors.
Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen
into an unconscious stupor.
Leave me now, you base fools! My fingers tire and I fear my incessant prattling
may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable character. Like a mixed metaphor, and
an overtaxed simile, I now bid SNOWBOUND farewell-- Novgorodny Vir

Boy Scout -- With the poor spelling you and your compatriots have adopted, shouldn't
you perhaps put on a kilt, and call thyself Boy Scot? -- Crip, short for Cripple

Gilia Harn -- You need to slow down and smell the flowers. -- Sweet Air

Stryker -- See you at recess. -- Super Grover

Ellita Fess -- Are you sure that isn't a chainsaw you are wielding? -- On My Way

Mr. Cheerful -- Scaring away Harry Monster with a smile. Not fair! -- Harry Monster

Hi, again, Ed, the sometimes-nice RSI person. I did practice my knots. Thanks for
reminding me. I was working really hard on my Dad's orchard, so I might have flunked
the knots. But I did get The Fruit and Nut Growing merit badge! I'm the only one in
my area. -- Boy Scout

Congratulations! I don't know anyone else with a Fruit and Nut Growing merit
badge. Though fruits and nuts are fairly plentiful around here.... -- Ed.

Harry Monster -- That "I" and "you" thing you wrote to Dr. Honorable was really
funny. I couldn't, however, find a "you" in Honour, but I did find an "our." Does
that make it our team? -- Boy Scout

Art Weurk? Ha ha ha. I like that name for someone who is into Modern Masters. I
think you are going to be almost as funny as Mr. Crip. -- Boy Scout, Team Virtue
P.S. I suggest sending all your abominables to Canada.

Harry Monster -- There IS a "U" in Cheerful. Have a nice day. -- Mr. Cheerful

Ciruelo Cabral -- Now that was an interesting tussle. You're a pretty big guy for
one of your type. Better luck next time. -- Dr. Honorable

Julie Bell -- I'm glad we got out of that one with both of our virtues, and
everything else, intact. Whew! -- Capt. Friendly

Mr. Weurk -- I'm very sorry you had to matchup so much with our team. You were very
unlucky. I'm sure your time is coming. -- Boy Scout

Frazetta -- I do so enjoy a stimulating and enduring duel. A salute to you! -- Lady

Sweet Air -- (sneezing) I cad helb id. I'b allergic. -- Gilia Harn
P.S. I SHOULD have a strategy change, but fat chance on getting it.

Neuma -- You hate me! But I'm only a Karnhorn by race, not by politics or religion.
-- Arlen Abeli

On My Way -- Have a pleasant trip. -- Ellita Fess

Obsidian -- (innocent look) I was just trying to use the sand to stanch the flow of
blood. -- Fender Grale

Shame on the Night -- Darn. Drat. Other curses as seem appropriate. Just doing my
bit to prevent a five-oh turn. Couldn't have that. It wouldn't be traditional. --
Hollan Innis

Ed. -- I'd guess Art Weurk goes with Modern Masters, don't you think? -- Jorja

Yes, I would, but that probably means he isn't. -- Ed., who has experience with

Beginning at the Winter Face-to-Face in Tempe (January 2004), we will implement
several changes affecting tournaments. The tournament announcement for the upcoming
FTF and future tourneys will reflect these changes.
First, we will eliminate the tourney freeze for all regular DM warrior classes.
Regular DM warriors will not be classed ahead of the tournament, but instead will
fight according to their FE on the date of the tourney. There will still be a freeze
for the ADM classes, occurring on the same timeline as before, approximately 6 weeks
before the tournament.
In addition to the above change, the warrior classes will be slightly altered.
The new tourney classes will be as follows:

DM Tourney Classes ADM Tourney Classes
              ======================              ======================
                  0 FE: Rookies Freshmen
                1-4 FE: Apprentices ADM
               5-10 FE: Initiates Eligibles
              11-20 FE: Adepts ---induction---
              21-30 FE: Champions Contenders
                31+ FE: Challengers Primus

All regular DM tourney classes will remain solely FE based. All ADM classes will
now be based on warrior characteristics (i.e., the ADM split algorithm), including the
Freshmen class.
The Gateway and Primus arenas will be merging before the FTF to form one top
arena. These warriors will be split into two tournament classes, the Contenders and
the Primus classes, again based upon their characteristics. More information on this
will be published in the newsletters for those arenas.
If you have any questions about the above changes, please contact Customer
Service. Good luck in your games.
