The gladiators from the Middle Way, following Cass Dolan out to the valley north
of town where acreages were offered to graduates at bargain prices, kept silence,
each thinking their own thoughts.
After a time, the path rose and finished rounding the cliff, and they all came
out on a shelf of snow and stone at the south edge of the valley, looking down into
the valley in the light of midmorning. The sun was bright, but cold, and it
reflected blindingly off acres of snow and ice.
"Shouldn't there be houses?" Gobert Hinny asked. "I know some people have taken
lands out here and built on them, but I don't see any houses!"
"You won't see the houses," Cass answered. "The snow drifts and covers them.
Look for the smoke plumes. There," he said, pointing. "And over there."
The gladiators looked.
"I don't see many smokes," Petra said finally. "Maybe half a dozen."
Cass shrugged. "There'll be more after Thaw. But the winters here are too cold
for most people, and too dark, and the wind yells curses in the middle of the night."
"That's ridiculous!" Inglemort whacked at a pillar of snow with his spear.
"The wind doesn't have a voice, at least, not for WORDS."
"Spend a week up here in the winter and tell me that again," Cass said. "I know
what I've heard."
"I'm sure you do." Fender Grale scanned their immediate surroundings and saw
two paths, one that went down a long slope into the valley, and the other that clung
to the knife-edge of a ridge. "Which way do we go?"
Cass pointed along the ridge. "That way."
Gobert looked along the ridge and scowled. "There's nothing up there. The
houses are down the other way."
"Down there is 'visiting' and we're supposed to be hunting," Cass answered.
"Hunting is up here on the ridge." He turned away from his teammates and started
along the high, narrow trail, leaving them to follow or not at their own decision.
Each for their own reasons, all of them followed, Fender Grale bringing up the
rear.
"What are we going to hunt up here?" Ingelmort asked.
"Ice bears, if we're lucky."
"And if we are NOT lucky?" Gobert Hinney asked. A day spent tromping around in
the snow and the cold without even a hunt to show for it did not appeal. Going down
into the valley and visiting residents was sounding better.
"Utterly Abominable Snowmen and Nameless Horrors, most likely. They hunt the
ice bears, too."

Yet another turn, still no invitation. And to think we didn't even notice that Super
Grover had disappeared from the rankings. Oh well, hopefully he'll be replaced this
turn by the Trash Can.

I doubt SNOWBOUND will ever be the same. It seems the training can make the
difference, as OPEN SESAME is pushed out of top team by LIFE IMPACTS, who came from
0th with a 5-0-1 this turn. And let's see, TRASH CAN fought SANITY LOSS and gained
24 points and contributed to OPEN SESAME's 4-1-1. GOBERT HINNY has lost to FACE THE
SKY II, falling 10 points, while helping make MIDDLE WAY 6 a 1-4-0 turn. ADRIANNE
challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting to dethrone OPEN SESAME's
warrior. We should ask ADRIANNE about the thrill of victory, and what being the new
Duelmaster does for a warrior, she's now the one to ask. Tell me, is nothing sacred?
I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Victory Tavern uses trolls in their
stew. Talk about gristle!
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. DRUID'S GROVE has cause to stand
tall, as they were SNOWBOUND's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a
team to beat. And avoiding DRUID'S GROVE more than any other team we find OPEN
SESAME. SNOWBOUND, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well,
sports fans, take notice that ADRIANNE from DARQUE FORCES II was SNOWBOUND's most
challenged warrior this turn.
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. The manager of DREAMS OF KADATH
will not be pleased to learn that SANITY LOSS, a 3-1-0 fighter, has been killed at
the hands of OPEN SESAME's TRASH CAN. IRINA JASSE has departed SNOWBOUND, leaving
MIDDLE WAY 6 without their 8-9-1 warrior. Question, just what was hers team doing at
the taverns last night? Is it really true that SNOWBOUND has more dishwashers per
capita that fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
I like this place, SNOWBOUND, the taverns have old wine, and young serving
