                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Players old and new!

Some of you may know that at one point last year, RSI tried to pull together an
arena in which role-playing in the personals and in spotlights would be a significant
(and rewarded) feature. Though it didn't work out, the idea remains an appealing
one. I would like to propose that we, the players, sponsor such an effort. No
rules, no prizes, just players getting into the spirit of role-play.
I suggest Telorinthe, arena 83, as a place to try this. Telorinthe is the slow
no-tourney arena, and it seems like a good place for this experiment. There is no
large body of entrenched players with other interests. Although some background work
has been done, there is no great, creaking, edifice of old spotlights to deal with.
Very little in the way of vested interests. Perhaps if all goes well, the idea might
catch on in other arenas.
In keeping with the "no rules" idea, I won't say, "Begins on turn ###!" Just
show up when you feel like it and jump in. We'll keep a seat ready for you.

Jorja and the Middle Way

P.S. And I'll try to have at least a short piece each time. No major adventures,
just "the adventure of living." Bring your friends!

A DUELMASTER COLUMN FROM THE DAYS OF YESTERYEAR

Charles Starrett (March 28, 1903 - March 22, 1986) was an American actor best
known for his starring role in the DURANGO KID Columbia Pictures western series. He
was born in Athol, Massachusetts.
A graduate of Worcester Academy in 1922, Starrett went on to study at Dartmouth
College. While on the Dartmouth football team, he was hired to play a football extra
in the 1926 film The Quarterback. In 1930 he played the romantic lead in Fast and
Loose, which also featured Miriam Hopkins, Carole Lombard and Frank Morgan. After
that, he was very active for the next two years but his roles were unremarkable. In
1933 he was featured in Our Betters and helped organize the Screen Actors Guild, and
in 1936 signed with Columbia Pictures and become one of the top ten western stars,
starring in 115 movies the following 16 years.
After playing assorted sheriff and rangers roles, Starrett gained fame for his
role as THE DURANGO KID. The first film in which he played his famous alter-ego
character was known as The Durango Kid, which was released in 1940, but for some
reason, Columbia did not see fit to continue with the series at that time. The
character was revived in 1944 and lasted through 1952. Dub Taylor, as "Cannonball",
worked with Starrett until 1946. At that time, Smiley Burnette, who had been a very
popular sidekick to Gene Autry, was brought in to replace Taylor. Burnette,
appropriately enough, played a character called Smiley Burnette. The Durango Kid
films combined vigorous action sequences--often with speeded up camera work and
spectacular stunts performed by Jock Mahoney--and western music. Each film featured
a singing group, and many gave free rein to Burnette's singing and playing.
In Durango Kid movies, the main character was usually called "Steve" something,
but he could change outfits and horses to become the hero behind the black mask. His
horses were named "Bullet" (Steve) and "Raider" (Durango).

Starrett, who was independently wealthy, ended his acting career at age 48 when
the Durango Kid series ceased production. He once told the Dartmouth alumni magazine
that most of his California neighbors thought he was a retired banker.
Starrett died of cancer in Borrego Springs, California in 1986, six days short
of his 83rd birthday.
Diehard film and video collectors still relish the Durango Kid films, but many
are still locked away in Columbia studio vaults these many years later, with only a
few recently being aired on The Movie Channel (TMC).

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail SNOWBOUND! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for
your deeds. And let's see, LADIRO MAELS fought RED ALERT and gained 21 points and
contributed to MIDDLE WAY 6's 3-2-0. THRESHPACK has lost to PURPLE ACE, falling 11
points, while helping make PUBLIC ENEMY a 0-4-0 turn. This turn DURANGO KID
challenged GOBERT HINNY in what was SNOWBOUND's Title bout. Defending his title for
another turn, DURANGO KID kept MIDDLE WAY 6's warrior, GOBERT HINNY, from claiming
the throne. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources
that The Victory Tavern uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one. I also notice that the PUBLIC ENEMY
stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on SNOWBOUND, what are you afraid
of? And avoiding PUBLIC ENEMY more than any other team we find LIFE IMPACTS.
SNOWBOUND, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports fans,
take notice that GOBERT HINNY from MIDDLE WAY 6 was SNOWBOUND's most challenged
warrior this turn.
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. A brave warrior does not carry a
red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well.
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Always good to rest in SNOWBOUND, but never good to wear out my
welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to
paper-- Alarond the Scribe
