A suite among the servants, but that was okay, the decor was less overpowering. Berdan looked around at the nearly plain hangings that covered the walls of the central room in the suite and scowled. "I don't like this," the ex-assassin growled. "Sequestering us! This Dankilvan is up to something." Raoul shrugged, took off his hat and looked at it, then put it back again. The gesture didn't mean anything, but it gave him time to think about his answer without being rude. And he was really tempted to be rude. Berdan was repeating himself. And the gladiator was getting tired of repeating his answer. But one more time... maybe it would get through this time. "Lord Dankilvan is trying to keep Skaithvarn out of Alastarian politics. Can't blame him for that! We don't want that entanglement, either." "He's sending a Delarquan spy with us--" "A Delarquan gladiator who may or may not be a spy. So?" "She'll be a spy. Everything we do will be reported to this--" "Are you planning to do something you want to hide?" Jeri Northwind asked. Berdan jumped a little, having forgotten that she was there. "No, but--" "Then it isn't a problem. In fact," she exchanged a glance with Raoul, who nodded slightly, "in fact, it's a good thing. It means the S'varni won't have to worry about what we might be up to, because they'll know what we ARE up to." "Right, doll. And besides, better the spy we know and can see than one we don't. Surely you realize that, Berdan?" The ex-assassin sighed and shrugged. "I suppose so." *** ***** *** ***** *** Hallie O'Dene turned out to be an elf. A southern elf, a dark-skinned Shagornan elf, an elf of the kind deeply distrusted by the northern elves who figured in the ancestry of all Fratsfan nobles. Berdan refused to have anything to do with her. "And how Dankilvan, himself of the High Blood, could actually employ her, trust her--!" He stormed around their sitting room, not quite throwing things but looking as though he wanted to. Hallie O'Dene watched quietly, showing no offense, nor any other reaction except mild interest. Leaning just a little toward Jeri, she asked, "Does he have a strong heart? Because he's a prime candidate for apoplexy right now." Jeri put a hand over her mouth to hold back a snort of laughter. "I don't know him that well," she admitted, "but fortunately, we can do this without him if we have to." The Delarquan's eyebrows rose. "You think he might abandon the mission just to avoid working with me?" "He might, doll," Raoul said, coming to sit between the two of them on the room's long couch as Berdan continued to rage up and down the room, cursing Hallie, Raoul and Jeri, Peranis, Dankilvan, and other people they'd never heard of comprehensively and bitterly. "That doesn't worry me so much as that he might quit us and try to go on without us--go into competition with us over it. How much can we trust him? The man used to be a spy and an assassin, after all." "Well, it's as good as a play," Hallie said, "but Lord Dankilvan wants us to get ON with things. Maybe we should try to stop him?" Raoul shook his head. "He's got to get through it, doll. But maybe we should get on with it ourselves. Jeri and I are ready to go--we didn't unpack when we got here." "Leave Berdan to follow when he calms down?" Jeri asked. "Or go back to Andor, if that's what he wants to do." Raoul shrugged. He glanced at Jeri, who jumped up and grabbed a backpack. "I'm ready," she said. As soon as Raoul and Hallie had picked up their packs, she added, "What's the matter with this Leemith place that Lord Dankilvan mentioned? He didn't seem to like them at all." Hallie led the way out the door. "I've got horses waiting for us," she said. "The Leemin, well, they're all vampires. Generally good neighbors, but still, you just don't trust a town full of vampires, do you?" + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Andorians Abroad #20 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Skaithvarn: Raoul glanced over his shoulder, but Dankilvan's mansion was already out of sight around one of the street's numerous curves. He wasn't sure Berdan had even noticed their departure yet; at least, the Fratsfan wasn't coming along behind them. He shrugged and turned forward again. As he'd told Hallie, they could do this mission without Berdan if they had to, and looked like that was the way it was going to be. He looked at the Delarquan. "Tell us more about these vampires in Leemith, doll. Are they going to be a problem to deal with? Do they attack chance travelers?" "Well...not instantly, anyway." Hallie pulled a couple of pocket-sized leather folders from a belt pouch, handing one to each gladiator. "These are passes signed by Lord Dankilvan and naming you as being on business for Istoreth. If you get a chance to show the pass, that should give you some protection. Of course, if we meet someone who's working for, oh, Sharvan or Pantiello, or even Ulm, maybe, then the passes will get us INTO trouble...." "Those being other city-states here, I take it?" "Yep. The Ulmers are probably okay, they've got some kind of trade treaty with Convincia. But if the Leemin don't want whatever it is your Peranis is selling, I bet the Sharvanese will." "These Sharvanese have Delarquan ties?" Jeri asked. "No, ISTORETH has Delarquan ties," Hallie corrected her. "Sharvan isn't a player in Trier politics. Yet. But they want to be." "And Peranis' book of names and blackmail material would give them their ticket to the party," Raoul finished. "Damn." He scowled at the crowded street and the city gate ahead of them without seeing any of it. "What's the political stance of this Leemith place?" "Mostly they just want to be left alone," Hallie answered promptly. "If they buy the list of names, it would be some lord doing it for personal profit, I would guess. Nobody's ever suggested they want to be a power in the Trier." Raoul nodded, his attention returning to his companions. "So Peranis might be able to sell it in Leemith if he's in a hurry, but he'd probably get more money, and cause more trouble for Andorian, if he takes it to Sharvan?" "Yes. That'd be how I see it." Hallie glanced at Raoul. "Whose names are on this list?" "According to Berdan, noblemen, politicians, merchants, even some arena managers--people who make a big noise in Andorian politics and the Andorian economy." "People with secrets they'd pay a lot--or do a lot--to keep hidden." "Right." "Hmm." Hallie showed her own pass at the city's gate and indicated her companions with a gesture. "They're with me." She led the way through the gate and onto the open road. "We might've asked how long ago Peranis went through," Jeri said, urging her mount up beside Hallie's. "I already did. Two days. It's one day from here to Leemith, another day to Ulm, a third to Sharvan, moving at a normal traveling pace. Peranis may already have made his deal in Leemith, if he found a purchaser there." Raoul glanced at the sky. It was midmorning, clear and crisp. Maybe eight hours of daylight left, he judged. "Let's pick up our pace a little, then, so we can make inquiries in Leemith this evening." *** ***** *** ***** *** The road hugged the coast, sometimes running along the narrow, stony beach, sometimes veering inland to cross small, steep-sided valleys, occasionally clinging to a cliff above the water. They met no one coming from the south, and were overtaken by no coming from behind them. There were no villages or inns along the road. A dense pine forest covered most of the land near the road. "You could BELIEVE in vampires in a place like this," Jeri muttered, twisting to reach the cloak tied behind her saddle. The temperature had dropped steadily all morning, and now, looking north, she saw why. A bank of clouds filled the northern sky with shades of slate and charcoal. "Of course. What's to disbelieve? I never argue with the facts, doll," Raoul said. He glanced over at her--they were riding all three abreast--and followed her gaze northward. "Damn. Any place along here where we could take shelter?" "Not that I know of," Hallie admitted, squinting at the clouds uneasily. "We might come across something, I suppose, but would YOU trust any shelter you found along here under these circumstances? Bound to be a disaster waiting to happen." "We don't have much choice," Jeri argued. "If we can find ANYTHING, a house, a ruin, a CAVE, even, I'm for it!" She kicked her horse into a better pace. "We know there's no shelter behind us, almost all the way back to Istoreth, so--" The horse seemed to share her dislike of storms and willingly shifted into a pounding gallop down the hill into the next little valley. Almost hidden among the trees was the curved stone wall of a stubby tower. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Oay, so I get to making some parting words since I am now a Lady Protector. I could list all the many people I need to thank, or I could give kudos to my several teachers. But, you know, I think I'll just give a salute to all the warriors of Fratsfa. You made me what I am--HOT! (wink) So let me give you my particulars.... -- 11(+1)-6-9-17(+2)-21-12-11 Slasher -- great damage and good endurance (on the roll) -- bonused +4 decisive--along with damage and endurance -- 2 master, an adex and 2 experts (no defense rating) -- 14-3-0 arena and 22-15-1 tournaments -- Epee/High/Very Low/Parry I will make a parting challenge at my old friends from Otto's Parts. After all, they spent the most money on me at The Flower Shoppe, so to the victor goes the spoils. Good luck to all. Hugs and kisses. Violent Violet SPY REPORT Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport. I doubt FRATSFA will ever be the same. It seems the training can make the difference, as MIDDLE WAY 8 is pushed out of top team by FLOWER GIRLS, who came from 3rd with a 3-0-0 this turn. THEY MIGHT BE ORCS stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-0 into a 3 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 2nd place. Good work, guys! And let's see, TEALIN SALI fought COLLAPSED LUNG and gained 17 points and contributed to MIDDLE WAY 8's 3-2-0. COLLAPSED LUNG has lost to TEALIN SALI, falling 15 points, while helping make OTTO'S PARTS a 0-3-0 turn. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and VIOLENT VIOLET remains FRATSFA's top warrior for another turn. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Victory Tavern uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle! He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose for good reasons. My mama told me that one. OTTO'S PARTS has cause to stand tall, as they were FRATSFA's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who avoided OTTO'S PARTS stable the most? Believe it or not, it was ASSASSIN NATION. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that HALF MAST from ASSASSIN NATION was FRATSFA's most challenged warrior this turn. The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace. Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. You gotta do what you gotta do. OTTO'S PARTS has sent SQUASH BUTT to the Dark Arena. The deed is done. Lift the ale, and toast the memory. MIDDLE WAY 8 has lost POL OLVAN to the arena in the sky, but they don't seem to be worried. What do you expect from 7-7-0? Kudos go out to ORCA this turn, for revenging THEY MIGHT BE ORCS' bloodfeud against ASSASSIN NATION's warrior HALF MAST. Well done. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude. Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the sweetest. It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy.
