The magicians stared back, in much the same mood. The one who seemed to be in charge repeated his statement of position. "We came here to summon lesser daemons to deal with certain problems in Istoreth," he said. "You appeared in response to that spell. Therefore you are the summoned daemons and must do our bidding." "And what if we can't deal with your problems?" Sedalia asked. There might be some value in passing through Istoreth--a city on the Skaithvarn Peninsula, as he recalled--in the character of magical spirits. And some risks. The chief magician scowled. "Then you are the wrong daemons and must be dismissed out of hand." His scowl deepened, and he tapped his wand on the palm of his other hand. "A task which I am prepared to undertake without delay, it that should prove... necessary." "Or any of us!" another mage added. "Summoned daemons should not be so quarrelsome," a third said. His fingers were twitching. Since he was the one standing by the altar holding the knife (the victim appeared to have been a rabbit), this was not encouraging. Sedalia was quiet for a moment, reviewing what facts he had, then nodded sharply. "It appears to me that you and we have been the victims of a daemonic prank. Just as you cast your spell, your net, as it were, into the immaterial world, my comrade and I were attempting to escape the magical bounds of the Isle of the Eye. And some mischievous daemon, seeing a way to escape the spell himself, guided us into it in his place." The senator shrugged. "You have, in a way, done us a favor. So we will, so far as we can, return that favor by attempting whatever it was you wanted the daemon to do." The mages all stared at him fixedly for several moments, then turned to their leader, consulting with glances. Behind him, Gissanniah pinched his arm. "You don't know what they might want," she said, keeping her voice low. "We aren't demons--" "Freely granted," Sedalia said, "though some might argue that politicians do fall into that category. But they weren't fishing for demons. 'Lesser daemons', minor spirits of some kind. And we are ingenious and capable. We may be able to handle whatever is afoot." "The spell specified that certain abilities believed necessary would be present, and you could not have been substituted if you did not have them," the chief mage said. "Therefore, we will allow you the attempt." He gestured toward a grove of trees farther along the shore, where a carriage could be glimpsed. "Let us be away to Istoreth and put it to the test." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #10 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Between Tarrgir and Andor: "I don't believe this!" Fandil said. "After all these years of harmony, they're just turning on their neighbors--" Lenpro held up a hand to stop his companion. "Fandil, we could debate and analyze till the cows grow wings, but it wouldn't do a bit of good. Just a post mortem: How did the old Andorian League die? What we need is to act. Keep it alive, make it stronger, a *new* Andorian League. Start thinking about that." The old mage opened his mouth, then closed it again and frowned. Finally he ndded. "You're right. Okay. Everything we've been able to find out indicates that the king is dead or vanished, no one knows exactly how, but gone for good." "Right. Somebody can investigate that later, if somebody wants to, but that's done." Lenpro glanced over his shoulder at Tarrgir, fading into the distance behind them. "Even if the king was found and returned to Andor, I don't think he'd be able to rule effectively now." "But somebody has to," Fandil said, nodding. "Not just to oversee the details of government--although somebody should keep all those bureaucrats under close watch! But--" Lenpro laughed. "I suppose 'all those bureaucrats' are watching each other very closely right now, making sure nobody gets more than their share of the power." "Maybe so, but all they can do is keep it grinding along in the same old way, and slowing down and dying in its tracks, if we could see a long view. No. We need a visible head of the government, a king or whatever, to form the pole around which the new Andorian League will crystalize." "Right," Lenpro said again. "And it should be someone whose claim to that role is beyond dispute. Andoria doesn't have *time* for internal disputes right now, not with hostile and greedy neighbors. So it has to be Emperor Alonj of Fratsfa." Fandil was silent for several minutes while their mounts negotiated a badly graded slope and a weedy ford. Then he sighed. "I see your logic. The baron of Ardivent is an elf, the head of the Aruaki Clanholds is an Aruaki. Neither would be acceptable at this time to the rest of the Andorian population, even if they wanted to take on the job. The High Thane of Convincia... isn't really up for the job, and he's old. With the defection of Aradi, a Raltuman wouldn't be trusted. So that only leaves a Fratsfan, and their ruler is human, the right age, and legitimate. But there is a persistent rumor that he's a half-wit, you know. Even if it isn't true, that will undermine the confidence of--" "Lady Fern says he's capable enough," Lenpro said. "But that's a secondary factor. He's the right man to serve as a figurehead for a new Andoria, so he's hereby elected." "Whether he wants the job or not?" "Whether or not," Lenpro said. He reined his horse to the right at a fork. "Which is why we're going to Fratsfa instead of Andor." Andor: Crystal Fireblade flicked a glance at the golem of the king, considering it and dismissing it. "It won't buy us much time," she said. "You can make it look like a king, but you can't make it act like one." "There is a rumor," Herlas said, "a whisper of a rumor among the clerks at the palace, that the golem is intended to announce its abdication in favor of some other person. Maybe not today, but soon--we aren't the only ones who know this won't work for long." "Who?" "Ah... probably Lord Korneth of Sengir." "I have never heard of this Korneth, or of Sengir," the knight said. "What do you know of him?" "Little more than you do. He is as ambitious as any man I've ever seen. Ruthless. As to his background, nothing. People who asked questions when he first appeared... disappeared." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 299): MISS TOOK of LADIES IN WAITING (Crip, mgr.) Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and I'm going to give you a spy report!. Say good-bye to OTTO'S PARTS, as they are pushed from the coveted top team spot by the ZERO stable. Coming up with a solid 1-0-0 outing, DARQUE AGES has advanced 3 places in the rankings. It looks like the guys(?) at ZERO had a good week as they went 5-0-0 to put them in 1st place. I guess steroids help! Hey everybody, watch out for TWO, who flew up 17 points in the rankings after mashing FAT LIP like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. FAT LIP was subdued by TWO and drops 16 points. Our battling duelmaster LEO has managed to hold the title, fending off RENDOR QUIL's none too subtle advances. Better luck next time, MIDDLE WAY 8. Can you believe they are paying me 10 gold to deliver this stuff? Here is other news that is of note. Did you hear that OTTO'S PARTS was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal hygiene of OTTO'S PARTS' warriors, I'm not surprised! Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch ZERO's act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from OTTO'S PARTS. Well just about everybody wants a piece of FOUR, who was this week's most challenged warrior. Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle. Well, there's the manager of the FRATSFA giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that 'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors.
