It is I, Torak, Lord of The Order. I have a few things to say if all of you will allow. First of all, I would like to say that I am very happy to be back in this glorious arena. I was here once before with the Dark Dragons. A few of you might remember them. They did well, but not as well as I would've liked. I have brought The Order here with hopes of being a great and victorious team. I will introduce my warriors shortly. My next order of business is to speak on a team that has no business saying anything in this arena. I am talking about the Lords of Dusk. A manager, who has yet to name himself, comes in claiming to have victory as his goal, but only sends one warrior to fight. A warrior who was viciously defeated by the lovely Anastrianna. I have only one question to ask: Who in their right mind would desire to be allies with the Lords of Dusk? Anyway, now to meet the warriors of The Order. First is Anastrianna, the leader of my band of combatants. She is both lovely and lethal, and one warrior not to be taken lightly. The mighty Krull is another of my able warriors. Lankus may be inexperienced, but he is my most adept basher. Jasker is probably my second most dangerous fighter. Beware of him! And finally, Kozak, who will be a worthy opponent for some of you. The Order has one mission and that is to be victorious. My comrade in arms, the Expatriate of the Bleak Legion, and I are here to give good combat to many of you, and to devastate the rest. -- Torak, The Order + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #17 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + "No!" Fandil stopped suddenly in the middle of the street, rapping the butt of his staff on the paving stones. "We're going about this all wrong, Lenpro!" Lenpro pulled his brother toward the edge of the street. "You're blocking traffic," he said. "Move out of the way and then tell me what's wrong. Are you saying that we shouldn't have come to enlist Emperor Alonj, or what?" "Alonj? No, of course we have to use him, poor fellow. Legitmacy is critical. No, we're rushing about, acting in haste, without plan or even much thought. If we want to succeed and hold the Andorian League together, planning is critical." "Is your memory going? I distinctly recall that we argued, discussed, and planned all the way from Tarrgir to Fratsfa. Both of us. I was there, Fandil, and *I* remember it." "Very amusing, ha ha. I was there, too, and my memory is fine. But it doesn't include any memory of true planning beyond 'our opponents appear to have done this, we must do that to counter it'. Not real plans reaching into the future. Not much in the way of real information, either: WHO is our opponent, WHY is he or are they doing this, WHAT are they trying to achieve, and HOW can we best foil them?" "You left out when and where," Lenpro said. "WHAT are their resources, and our best resources against them? WHERE is their headquarters?" Fandil finished. He made a gesture of impatience. "You see the problem, and you know it isn't a joke, brother. All we're doing is reacting; our opponent is calling the steps of the dance." "Yes, and probably he--or they--know as well as we do that we'll have to work with Alonj. That's one of the reasons the Empress was upset. We might get a guard of gladiators for the Emperor and his wife and children; that would be a start there. But what are you proposing to do about the information shortage?" "I shall think," Fandil said. "No distractions of travel. And scry where I can; magical information gathering isn't totally reliable, but it's better than no information gathering." "I've no doubt Fern can fix you up with a private room to think in. And I will gather information on the streets," Lenpro said. He turned toward the Flower Shoppe and resumed walking. Lady Fern could. "I've just the place for you, brother," she said. "At the top of the house in the back, no one traipsing up and down a hall outside your door, you won't even hear activity from the shop down below." She called one of the girls, too many girls, Fandil thought, to show him the way. This one, a saucy piece called Charming Chenopodium or some such, okay, not Chenopodium, it had no flowers to speak of and was eaten like spinach, maybe she was an Alluring Alysum-- He jerked his thoughts back to the matter at hand. But the wretched girl was barely dressed; he supposed that garment she was almost wearing was a... shift or something; it certainly kept shifting! She opened a door at the end of a long hall and stood back. "Here you are, sir, and you'll have all the quiet you need. And then when you're ready for company, just give us a call, you know?" She pointed to a silver bell sitting on a table by the window. "Just ring the bell, and I'll hear you." With a last smile that seemed to promise many things, and she couldn't be as old as twenty!, she... shifted down the hall. Fandil shook his head and closed the door carefully behind him. Did it have a lock? Yes. He turned the lock. There were days when he simply didn't know what to make of his sister. Many days. Lenpro was glad enough to separate from Fandil for a while. He got along just fine with his brother, but there was no denying that they had different strengths. Fandil's strength was magic and careful thought. His own was decisive action, and he wanted to take some. Okay, sure, first he would gather a little information in his own way--walk the streets, linger in the bars, strike up conversations where he found them-- "You'll be going out, won't you, Lenpro?" Lady Fern said. "A good thing, I'm sure, but you aren't familiar with Fratsfa. I'll provide you with a guide, I think." She pointed to one of the girls lingering in doorways and leaning on counters around the shop. This one was a round-faced, cheerful blonde. "That one." The blonde bounced over. "Hi! I'm a Decadent Dandelion, but you can call me Dandy." She smiled up at him. "I know lots of good places to go in Fratsfa!" Fandil sat at the window and looked out over the city, sipping tea from a service he'd found ready for him. It was a dramatic view of the old place, pleasing, too, if one cared for charming melancholy. Fratsfa boasted of its ancient glories, and they had been glorious, there was no doubt of that. But they were in the past, slipping farther and farther into the past. There was still good in this old land, but he had a feeling, almost a vision, of the present strength burning away to make a carnival for the heedless. There was a feverish rush after pleasures--not even Fern was immune, and other parts of Andoria pursued it as blindly as Fratsfa did. But that hid the deeper issues. He was supposed to be considering the problems the disappearance of the king presented, but he now saw that as merely one more symptom of the deeper issue: The Andorian League was a hollow shell, a shallow mask over the deep divisions between the five realms that composed it. No one, not any of the old kings-- Ha, OLD kings? The League wasn't that old, there were humans alive who had been born before it formed. Still, not even the earlier kings of the League had addressed the problems that divided the realms. Race, of course, or more properly species: human, elf, werecat. But there were cultural gulfs, as well. The Andorian League was just that, an alliance rather than a true nation. If Aradi had been part of a true nation, would it have seceded? Would it have been ALLOWED to secede? He shoved these thoughts aside. They represented a problem that needed to be addressed, but not now. Right now... he barked a laugh. Right now, he had to figure out how to patch together the League that still was, in the hopes that there would BE a future when they could try to solve the deeper issues. Should that patching job even be attemtped? He hesitated, then nodded. Yes. Even if the League didn't become a nation, its original purpose remained: to unite the people of this corner of Alastari against their enemies. And the League, all Alastari, had enemies. Had one Enemy, at least, in common. Because there was something in the north, something within the Karnhorn lands, that was building strength and would destroy all the good and simple things that made life worth living, if it wasn't stopped. "First," Lenpro said, "I just want to get a feel for the town. The moods, the factions, the general attitudes--" "Great! There are attitudes everywhere," Dandy assured him. She grabbed his hand and set off. "I'll show you!" + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #18 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Andor: Herlas enjoyed scrying. True, it wasn't totally reliable as a way to gather information, but there were compensations. To be able to direct his vision anywhere within a range of fifty or a hundred miles, to skim it above the landscape like a bird, ah! It was almost as good as flying. And one thing this government job had given him was enough money to buy the very best scrying crystals. He paused with his hand on the sphere, reminded by the word "crystal" and a sort of twinge of concern. Should he keep an eye on Crystal Fireblade? She was by way of being his partner in this, and the night was full of dangers, and he had been around Korneth long enough to have a better idea how his mind worked.... No, the lady would consider his watching her, however well-intentioned, to be prying. Best to leave that for some later discussion, or a certainty of immediate danger. He forced thought of the woman out of his mind and placed the crystal ball on its working stand, polishing it carefully to remove any fingerprints or specks of dust. Amazing how much distortion you could get from little things like that. He admired the perfect crystal for a moment, then smiled, flexed his fingers, and muttered the spell to activate it. Andor at night, seen from above. Rings of light around the palace, Korneth didn't stint on the oil for the watchlights. A few lamps along the main streets and in the courtyards of the best inns. Mostly a carpet of textured darkness threaded with the silver of moon-reflecting water. By day or night, the view from above was always breathtaking. But personal indulgence was not his concern at the present. He muttered an addendum to the spell, altering what he saw and how he saw it. Concentrations of magic, that's what he was looking for now. The view shifted to shades of gray. A gossamer ring of lavender, barely visible, marked the outer watch- spell of the palace. No spark to indicate that the golem-king was active; it must have been shut down for the night. That made sense; as long as it was active, someone had to be providing power to it. Some golems were self-powered, eating just as real people did to provide them with energy, but Herlas knew that this one was not that sophisticated. Barely good enough to do the job, and no frills at all. He felt contempt; he was no specialist in golem construction, but even he could have done a better one. Oh, well. No magicians other than himself here in Andor. That always surprised him. There had used to be other mages here. But even a magician who wasn't using his powers would show up at this range, and there was nothing. Had Korneth ordered them killed, or driven off in some way? Wouldn't that have been too obvious? No, maybe not, after all, he himself hadn't noticed their absence until he went looking for them. He shrugged, uneasy, and widened his search. There were bound to be other magicians somewhere, Fratsfa and, if he could see that far, Zensu, and probably scattered around the countryside. Of course, any of them who was paying attention would feel his scry-spell pass, but that shouldn't cause alarm, magicians did this kind of thing all the time, to keep an eye on the competition. He set his viewpoint moving in widening circles like a soaring bird. His mouth twitched in amused recollection. The first time he'd tried this, he had kept the circles tight and moved too fast; it had made him so dizzy that he'd fallen on his face. Well, he'd been young. He knew better now. The landscape opened before him like a shadowy map. Andor, the river. Straight south to start with, to the northern end of the Daggerspine Mountains. Few people lived in that rock land, but there were some, and he recalled... had there not been a Lord Montar, an independent ruler back before the formation of the Andorian League; rumor said his only son had taken up the study of magic. And the castle would still be there. Somewhere around... there? A blank spot? How odd. He should probe it more deeply-- No, he should not. At least, not now. Thirty or even twenty years ago, he would have dropped his current survey to pursue that puzzle, but he had learned a few things since then. Finish one job before starting another. He could come back to that blank spot later. Maybe it was some kind of old static defense around Montar's castle, in which case it wouldn't go away. And if it did disappear, that would tell him something in itself. Sweep through the western arc of his range--these things were generally easier if done clockwise, for some reason. Tarrgir, with a faint smudge of magic hanging over it like smoke. North, the mouth of the river, Kati-Tei, the bay. East. Forest there, dark but webbed with faint light. The forest always showed that blue-lavender web, he had never figured out why. But there were bright sparks within it. Magicians or magical creatures of some kind. He would have to focus on one and dive his viewpoint as close as possible to work out which, and it didn't matter. Whatever he was looking for, it wouldn't be in the Shewish Forest. Through the southeast quadrant, across Fratsfa and back toward the mountains. Ah! Fratsfa looked like a bed of hot coals under the spell. This must be where the magicians of Andor had gone. He narrowed his focus, trying for more detail. Many different power signatures, most of them low in energy or skill but, as he had learned the hard way, not to be ignored. When magic was involved, a strong motivation could make up for a lot. He adjusted his spell to scan them more closely. Hmm. A typical unsorted population of magicians, this. Mostly self-absorbed and not particularly good or evil. A few, even on this quick examination, made him uneasy, and when he was younger, he would have dropped everything to challenge-- But not now. Now he had work to do. A stronger signature, the strongest he could detect in Fratsfa, and one he recognized: Fandil of Ardivent. He'd never actually met the man, in fact, he had avoided doing so because of their different orientations, but he would not be mistaken in identifying him. Odd to find Fandil up here, he usually stayed closer to Ardivent. But given the circumstances and Herlas's present intentions, perhaps the old mage would make a valuable ally. Perhaps he should contact-- It was like running at top speed and going head-first into a wall. The scrying crystal shattered. Where had the barricade come from? Herlas groped for his mental balance and failed to find it, collapsing among the shards of crystal, * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 303): GOLDENEYE of BONDAGE (Spawn, mgr.) Duelmistress of all Fratsfa. (Twice) Wow! Who would have thought it when I was a little girl. I am so proud. All you new guys, please give an encouraging word to my newest little Sis, Mad Magnolia. Keep her busy at The Flower Shoppe, too. She needs the experience. (wink) I hope those of you who went to the Mailer did well and brought honor to Fratsfa. Your time will come and soon you will be up here challenging me. Just remember, On top is my favorite position. (giggle) Sizzling Sunflower Duelmaster II SPY REPORT Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for FRATSFA. LORDS OF DUSK like really fought hard to move up to 6th from 11th. Way to go! What was the name of that team who got 4-1-0 this turn for a total 14-6-2 you ask? (Sure) THE ORDER's their name, and fighting's their game! MVP award for HARSH HAWTHORN? FLOWER GIRLS' proud of her after beating SALINA REES and getting 21 points. Talk about yer big time losers! SALINA REES got smashed by HARSH HAWTHORN, and lost 18 points! This Duelmaster is like something else! SIZZLING SUNFLOWER stopped BRAIN TUMOUR dead in its tracks! Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me! AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. The warriors of THE ORDER must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't? Is there some deep dark secret why BLEAKER LEGION's been avoiding THE ORDER so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Can BLEAKER LEGION's WEAKNESS be more popular than me? She was challenged the most, but is that really the same? WEAKNESS must not be a good enough fighter to get in fair fights. She challenged KRULL. 15 is a big difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I thought WEAKNESS showed great skill and promise when she subdued KRULL. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone gets killed. Not after four more fights. Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.) Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand wash. I gotta leave. FRATSFA is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much! Yes, a private meeting is in order. But let's work up to it, you know, soft lights, music, dinner.... -- Lena Koril The Expatriate -- So long as there's no contest, I'm here. Generally I don't do contests, although obviously I am susceptible to the flattery of a direct and urgent invitation (North Fork). -- Jorja Krull -- Damn your armor, I had you! -- Slothful Jasker -- You started well and avoided many blows, but in the end it didn't matter. -- Wasted Youth Bumble -- Die already. Thanks to you I'm the lone member of the Legion without a win. -- Lone Soul Anastrianna -- Sorry about that beautiful, but you should cover those up, they make great targets. -- Hated Man Ollie Quonsham -- You can't fight on the ground like that. -- Weakness Lady Fern -- Thank you for your warm welcome. I'm always on top of the situation when dealing with the Flower Girls, even when I'm under them. *wink* -- The Expatriate Torak -- I told you, you write like a school boy. -- The Expatriate Lady Fern -- We do enjoy being on top, but something tells me that the Sizzling Sunflower enjoys being on top as much as we do. -- Torak Lady Fern -- Would it be possible to hide out at the Flower Shoppe? I didn't mean to kill the constable! -- Kozak Lone Soul -- There is much to learn and I enjoy a good education. -- Kozak Wasted Youth -- That was quite a nice workout. Maybe we could do it again sometime. -- Jasker Scribe -- I thought you were a TP. -- Lankus LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS THREE was butchered by PRINCE OF LOVE in a 1 minute bloody Dark Arena fight.
